    I had a wheel repaired by Simon which was cracked and had 2 minor dents in. The wheel came back from repair with the crack still slightly visible and with the inner rim out of round and the outer edge still bent. I think he tried his best but does not have the equipment needed to get a wheel round and spinning true.

    • @simonsd1
      @simonsd1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kristopher Gainey Hi, Thank you. Without looking it up (it's many years since I did all the temperature stuff). I would start at around 180*c, See if it starts to move. Gradually increase and try again, Max. would probably be around 250*c . NO MORE as you will start to change the structure. It should still take a fair effort to move the ali with the rubber mallet. Good luck ! Cautiously at first and take it slowly. If you get it too hot then it will start to crystalize and crack.

    for bends on the outside area, i'm assuming a paint job is in order for every single job? How much does a whole wheel paint job as well as a small dent fix cost? Also would choosing a different color than the current rim color cost more? What if you have to paint the whole rim anyway?

    • @simonsd1

    Thermal Treatment

    During the several hour long thermal treatment, the material
    properties of the subsequently produced wheel are precisely set. The
    thermal treatment of the casting blanks particularly enables the
    reinforcement of the aluminum alloy being used. It consists of three
    phases. Step one: solution annealing. This is done in compliance with
    DIN 1706 at temperatures of 480 to 550 degrees centigrade, depending on
    the alloy. It involves selecting a temperature at which a sufficient
    amount of the alloy elements are dissolved into a solid solution, to
    enable the strength of the alloy to increase. In the second step,
    quenching, the blanks are shock-cooled down to a temperature of approx.
    70 degrees centigrade and are dormant in the third step, artificial
    aging, to achieve the desired strength values. This process requires
    absolute precision. If, for example, the specified maximum temperature
    for solution annealing is exceeded, the blanks become unusable for
    further processing and must be melted down again.

    • @simonsd1
      @simonsd1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Ali needs warming before working it as it can be brittle. Sometimes you can get away with it cold but not normally on cast as it has Been formed in the hot state.if you are not sure leave it to a shop. If the rim has been bent then it will normally break the seal on the rim , hence the leak. Hope this helps.

    Is this sort of work doable on magnesium wheels?

    • @cristianursu6504
      @cristianursu6504 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fiat x19 Magnesium wheels usually crack when trying to fix them, this is what happened to mine.... if a magnesium wheel gets bent there is a small chance to make it look as new, sadly, but how did you bend your wheel? Magnesium wheels are lighter and harder to bend than other alloy wheels.

    • @paynebabes123
      @paynebabes123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cristi Ursu I've asked around a few places and they all say the same thing. They crack or split when trying to do anything to them. Its not that bad but its almost too much to use wheel weights to stop any vibration through the steering wheel. I guess they are just old. They are Cromodoras so they are from the 70's.

    • @simonsd1
      @simonsd1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    •What kind of table is that because it surprised me to see it withstand the heat?
    •Is that a particular torch you are using?

      +Innocentjr Nwafor Hi,
      First it is a rubber mallet.

    If it were hard it would have been brittle and bits and pieces would have broken off with this kind of dent which proves that is it quite ductile. I guess it is meant to be that way so that in case of an accident pieces if it don't go flying off. It being ductile I don't see why it could not be "straightened" that is brought back into its original shape or as close as possible. I would do a dye penetrant test though after the repair just to ensure there is no crack.

    Absolutely wrong. Ruined the heat treatment of the wheel localy, thus reducing its UTS. A bent wheel has experienced micro cracking, and is therefore very prone to fatigue failure.

    • @simonsd1
      @simonsd1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      robert webb Totally wrong. Know your metal before commenting, Alloys are not heat treated just cast and many full of rubbish in the mix. Fatigue failure, maybe on something that is being push or pulled. Low running rotation!!! Maybe not. Bent rim's are usually compressed and bow out some where else on the rim. Maybe experiment first eh?

    for normal driving, this wheel should be fine! but don't think you can do this to a supercar wheel and drive safely at 150+. looks can be deceiving when it comes to strength, and reliability of metals once they've been impacted. People do this to scooter wheels all the time with no issues...but those are scooters, not 4k lbs of car missile.

      +Cameron Thompson Where are they hammers, bit of a random comment. Yes hitting two hammers together would be silly.

    this wheel will never work again don't repair that trash trow it away, bending this kind of damage with heat will change the alloy property and any small bump will bent it again

    No way in hell that rim would balance.. Sure it will appear almost back to shape. A flat table and a torch will not be true, and will not be 100%.

    This guys ignorance is outstanding !!! Wheels from BBS are able to withstand many times the loads set out in
    European ECE standards with a unique range of quality and design
    features. We lay the foundation for this technology before series
    production. Using FEM analysis and computer simulations, wheel
    properties are determined and optimised during the design stage.
    Prototypes have to demonstrate their quality on laboratory test benches
    under extreme conditions. During series production, an effective quality
    assurance system guarantees that each wheel is of first-rate quality.
    We have received certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001 for
    effective quality management and ISO TS 16949, the international quality
    standard for the automotive industry. And to prove that environmental
    protection and resource conservation play an important role at BBS, the
    company has been awarded the ISO 14001 certificate for environmental
    management.

      robert webb Well thank you for the criticism. I don't remember slating bbs wheels at any point, but maybe I was wrong.
      I myself would agree that BBS wheels are very good and have never had to work on one in 30 years. Oh no, I have it was off a racing car and was a right mess. sorted it out for the customer though and he was very happy not to have to fork out for a new one.
      The wheels that generally need welding are BMW and jaguar. BMW are way too hard and jaguar's are just made of rubbish and way too soft.
      I don't think that their testing are anywhere near as vigorous as stated by yourself. Not all wheel manufactures standards are as high as yours.
      We offer a service and the video is here for help to those that may want to have a go themselves, as many countries do not have a local workshop and appreciate advise.
      Please keep your slating for those that are slating you.
      Thank you for watching though. 😎
