“I felt like I got kicked”: Ontario man told new EV battery would cost more than $50,000

  • Simrat Sooch of Stoney Creek, Ont., was a true believer in electric vehicles, who described his first one as “very reliable.”
To trade up, he bought a pre-owned 2017 Ioniq made by Hyundai. The vehicle had already been driven 69,000 kilometres but the warranty covering the electric charging system and battery was good for 160,000 kilometres. Sooch told Global News he was confident in the purchase and figured he wouldn’t have any issues with it.
But in October, a warning light appeared on his instrument panel. He took the car to the dealer, but technicians couldn’t find a problem. Two weeks later, Sooch said the vehicle stopped charging and the Ioniq was back at the dealership. After diagnostic checks, he said technicians determined the battery needed to be replaced.
The quoted cost, including the battery, installation and taxes came to more than $50,000. “I felt like I got kicked in the privates,” Sooch said in an interview.
Global’s Sean O’Shea has the details.

I don't know were you are going to find a new transmission for $ 3,500 but I can tel you that I have a customer who has a 2019 BMW X5 that the engine fail just past the manufacture's original warranty and a replacement engine with out any acesories just the cylinder head and block was more than $ 30 000 and a other customer came in he needed new injector for his BMW 6 cylinder engine and they are $ 1,000 a each so $6,000 for all 6 plus installation and taxes engine and trasmissions on new cars now are not cheap anymore but $ 40.000 for a new battery for a 2017 ionic is way over priced he should've check for a used one .

Had an incident like this with Toyota. June 2021 rear wheel bearing gave out and could not get another one as Toyota Canada had them on "backorder" for several months as they needed to get them from their warehouse in Iowa. Living in Atlantic Canada, I called a Toyota Dealership in Brewer, Maine and they got the part from this same Iowa warehouse in less than one day. Had them mail it to me and had the part in 5 days. Informed the press of this and before they could do an interview with me, the local Atlantic dealer "found" a part and was ready to install.

I live in a very affluent area of Marin County. Two years ago, you could throw a stick in any direction, and it'd hit a Tesla. There were charging stations at every market
I watched as yet another group of those stations were being built at my local strip mall 8 months ago; eight spots taking up more prime parking spots...
It's now been 4 months since they've finished, and I've never seen more than a single EV parked there. Ever. A month ago, I drove past, and there was yellow caution tape cordoning off half of them. The tape is still up as I write this
I'm also not seeing as many Teslas on the road now, either...
Update 12/31/23: The yellow caution tape is still there, now faded and flapping in the wind. None of the spots being used.
    What a waste of money...

Moral of the story: Never accept "we cannot do anything" from a dealer. Demand the service manager, without raising your voice, or swearing. Make it very clear, that you are not satisfied and demand a resolution. If you cannot solve the issue, email head office with the invoice, work order. The problem is you get very little trade in value when warranty is about to expire or expired because potential buyers know they’re gonna be spending thousands on a new battery . It was good info from someone who had first hand knowledge. I wouldn’t buy one for many valid reasons but this is a big one . I found out auto and home insurance rates go up significantly and electricity usage does as well . They don’t tell you these thing when buying them .

I depends on battery size, and distance driven. For an average EV, driven daily, for about 36 miles a day (USA) you can expect about $1.50 to $1.80 to charge your car daily. Or a little less than $10 USD if needing a full charge. Even extrapolating a daily charge over a month that is still less than 60 dollars to "refuel" on average, average is the word I stress here. Compared to my car that takes premium only, I put in gas at least two to three times a month at 50 to 65 USD equivalent. So the cost definitely isn't much higher for a home electric bill vs keeping a ICE in operation.

i bet the dealership wanted to milk him, or worse, wilfully scare him away from electric cars.
looking at the amount of dealerships sending open latter to the White house to delay the only electric law further out.
dealerships live from the mark ups they have on the cars and the servicing of the cars during the 5 year warranty time, oil and brake replacement and all other stuff, and they charge you for them good. electric cars dont need oil , spark plug, brake pad replacement. they cant charge you for nothing.. maybe for an air-filter change.. but most cases you can do that easy if you are willing to do it. and brand wake up that their dealerships put substantial mark-ups on the cars, but now in case of electric, it is literally slows down sales numbers.

This is the third case involving Hyundai and an EV battery replacement rip-off I've come across online. I would definitely avoid any Hyundai vehicles. • @wendymartin6479
      @wendymartin6479 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

It is normal with EV cars. Jaguar has decided to shut down their EV manufacturing line because after the first round of buyers realised the hidden costs and inconvenience, they didn't want to purchase a second one. This had a knock-on effect because new consumers didn't want to buy one either. Porsche and Volkswagen are having similiar issues and many Porsche dealerships won't take your used Porsche EV because there are too many and no one wants to purchase them. There are also not enough qualified mechanics to work on them, and finally the cost of charging the vehicles. Not only does it take a lot of time out of your schedule but the costs of charging may become problematic in future - you won't be in a position to complain about it. Lastly it loses around 10-25% of its resale value annually, so after 3 years dealerships may not offer you anything depending on the model. I find the insurance to be quite high and they don't really fix them once they have been in an accident because of the batteries - remember your EV vehicle may an auxiliary battery as well. You as the consumer will be the loser in the end.

Most are with clean running engines. Only VW diesels in older cars smells terrible. :) My younger relative drives Honda Accord from 2004. Emissions tax is around 200 Euro ... per year and insurance per year is about the same. His even younger sister purchased similar age Audi A3 as first car. EV... In Belgium they not allowing of company lease for employers if car is not EV. Even if lease cost is taken from gross salary, the lease cost of EV is so significant, any normal range EV is at least 500 EU per month for lease as benefit company provides. It could take up to 1/4 of net salary for EV lease in Belgium. The only two "cheap" EV here are one from Peugeot, with real range of only 200 km or made in China Dacia EV, which has only one star on safety rating and tiny range as well. And if you have to charge while on route and fast, they say it costs as much as fuel refill (1.5 Euro per L at least). From my experience here in Belgium as newcomer, we are forced by EU policies to buy old, used gas engine cars. Not very expensive new EV and not economical used with diesels. Passenger car with diesel engine emissions tax is about 1.5K Euro per year now in Belgium. But people are still using even them, because EV cots is an arm and leg and nobody is confident with repair costs of used EV. Used EVs are sold here for oddly low prices comparing to EV age. This is exactly what car people have been trying to warn the public about. Batteries are so expensive that it often will result in the vehicle being scraped instead of repaired. This is still a problem with the newest ev and makes these vehicles completely impractical for people unless they can afford to buy new and dump it on a poor unsuspecting individual shortly before any warranty is gone. This is going to result in a large environmental impact as vehicles life expectancy drops from 30yr or more down to around 10yr as the battery dies.

Not really. There is nothing about that battery worth $50K. The full replacement right now for a Tesla is $23K (CAD) and dropping. Expect more price reductions as more battery production comes on line in the next couple of years. On top of that newer models on better EVs have better battery chemistries and thermal management systems that extend the life of the battery by a lot.
On top of that there are places you an get the battery repaired with something like a 1% to 2% range loss.

The initial quoted price was $5k. They agreed to do it for $2,5k and provided a rental car for the entire repair process (2 weeks) -- even though the car was out of warranty and was around 10 years old. Sometimes a manufacturing issue is so egregious it does not even meet the manufacturer's expectations. @@lindacalderon6417: Yes, I was being facetious. Anyone who’s studied even basic physics knows there are energy losses at every step of the process. So if you burn a fossil fuel to turn turbines to create electricity and then ship it through cables and transformers to a charging station, then into the battery to run the car motor, you’re far better off to just burn a fossil fuel directly in the car. Electric cars are a bad idea just like they were in the 1920s. Realistically a fool’s paradise…which of course is why they’re so popular in political circles.

Having taken the dealership training for chrysler's EV program a few years ago, EV battery refurbishing is too much of a liability for the dealership. Even When removing the battery pack on a Fiat 500e, if a single drop of coolant gets into the battery pack, the manufacturer can deny the covering warranty on the battery pack. Knowing the facts about dealing with warranty just makes it so much harder to buy a new car not just EV's. Dealerships will get warranty claims denied all the time. If you actually read your owner's manual it will tell you about maintaining warranty.

Quoting someone such an absurd cost for replacement of a part that is many times more than the resale value of the car even after replacement of such part, is basically telling the consumer to go F themselves and scrap a perfectly good car.
