shoot, when i was young, 16 to be precise, long after this song was recorded and past forgotten by most, it suit my winter persuits just fine.. the icy driving in my wooley leather coat, moon glowing in the trees and my girlfriends eyes as we sipped wicked ales, puffing on under christmas tree lights and candle in our rooms, reliving what always was as if it were new in every steaming bath fogging the window, and every flip of our long locks and sizzle of incense, accompanied by songs of people we didnt know, yet seemed all too familar, as we walked like a king and queen of old in our kingdom of magic and mayhem merry christmases
Brian references Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds which came out a few months before Brian's 20th birthday. You don't have to be on drugs to love the song, you just have to have an imagination. I think the song is about going from innocence and happiness to depression. When the night comes down, and it's dark again. Thanks for reacting to this one! Not many people know it.
@HAP3SPEAKS , Not sure if anyone has said in previous comments, but this version is actually the demo version, as they weren't happy with the final mix on the finished version and felt this mix was better, so they put this mix on the album instead
Brian May was, and probably still is the master of the unexpected, this song belongs in the previous decade, he could write inciteful songs like 'White Man', sad songs like 'All Dead, All Dead', ballads like '39', fun rock songs like 'Tie Your Mother Down' or 'Fat Bottomed Girls' and epic crowd participation songs like 'We Will Rock You', he could (and still does) make his guitar produce the sounds he wanted (whether that be a scream or a cat's meow), rock the world with an epic guitar solo or sit on a stool and play intimate music on a 12 string acoustic guitar for a quarter of a million people.
That guitar sounds in the beginning sounded magical, then Freddie’s voice ... wow 😲 drum hits along w/ the song, this early Queen’s got the power of making music all along! Awesome reaction & comments! Hap 👍🏼🎧❤️
The whole song just screams innocence - the lyrics, Freddie's crystal clear young voice, the music..You've got to the core od the song and who and what had influenced Brian the moment you started listening, impresive sharp mind, Hap (or, should I say, Ear 🙂)
They all sound so young and fresh. This was from their first album so I believe this was recorded prior to 1973. It does have a Beatles influence to it. Thank you so much for all of your reactions, they are very much appreciated.
Interesting. A Queen song I've never heard. I did get the Lucy reference right away....well I thought I did but you confirmed it. If I had randomly heard this song I would not have guessed Queen unless I was very closely listening. Even hearing it here I was questioning my ears who was singing it. Then there was a unique Freddie sound and I knew. Thank you for the introduction to a new one!
TBH, this is my first time hearing this song. How young Freddie sounded. Queen was at the experimental stage of their career, obviously. It was good, different. But this song help to evolve them to what they became. Excellent reaction, Hap!! 💜💜💜🎵👑 great song choice, Lovey M.
Hmmmm coincidence? I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately and here you are Hap!! Love this song!! Yes, Queen giving nods to the Beatle vibe!! There’s “something in the way Queen moves .. attracts me like no other …” 🥰🥰
Oh yes, the Beatles vibe is here. Brian May was very influenced by the Beatles. And you are right, many Queen songs seem to be in a time warp, like they were written in the past, and now they make perfect sense. Amazing, yeah? "Lucy was high and so was I" & "And I get afraid of losing my way" &"and it's dark again". Perfect sense, right? Great song, great reaction, Hap, Queen and you never disappoint 😎🎶
The early Queen stuff like this didn't sound like the band that everybody knows. This is the music that introduced me to Queen. And to borrow a quote from a member of another band from about the same time period "We were from the same place, listening to the same music, of course we were going to sound like the Beatles."
This is what Queen originally sounded like before they went all stadium rock in the 80's. Baroque pop rock with some prog & psychedelic mixed into the pot. Of course all musicians absorb what's around them, its called influences! 😂 I am almost 100% positive that Brian is talkiing about depression, not coming of age.
I'm afraid Brian is telling about his depressions... I just realised that as soon as 1973 he was allready troubled by them... Poor man... all these times....
It was very different to what i expected the sounds to be, but i was getting the vibe that Freddie tried to whisper to us to grab the attention. Enjoying discovering more new Queen tracks with you! Your comments are so insightful and smart! Thank you for sharing this with us Hap 👍🏼💙
Another great song!Lucy was high! Brian is 74! Happy Birthday,2 weeks Roger will be 72! Sure hope they get to tour one more time! U still havent done Machines,Roger is the voice of the robot, lol, love there early work, and Freddies voice is so innocent here, and clear
This is actually a awesome song. Reflecting back of their adolescence. But yet hadn't found their place in the real world & no idea of what was yet to come from this legendary band. Your reaction was really insightful but they always are when it comes to Queen.♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️
Thanks for reacting to this one! I hadn't really payed attention to this until recently but when I did I found how much I love it - Freddie's voice and the harmonies are something, as usual.
You can sense a lot of influence from other groups in their early songs. The guitar riff in 'Doing alright" sort of has a flavor reminiscent of 'The grateful dead", "father to son" has a black sabbath vibe, etc. These early songs and live performances just show that of course, they were going to be something truly unique, but alongside Freddie's vocals, it also demonstrates what a deep and intriguing poet Brian is and the renaissance man he was blossoming into.
It sounds like Brian experienced depression right after his teenage years and not in his adulthood. Possibly, depression has been around him most of his life. That's when the night comes down for depressive people like me. But Bri has fought against it and talks quite freely about it. That's the reason why his fans love him so much. He has become a model because he has shown that depression and even suicidal thoughts can be overcome. Hail Bri and thanks on behalf of those who feel they've been saved and brought back to the light by you 💥💥💥
Spot on. I never thought about the lyrics to this until I learned it on guitar, then realised it is totally about depression! It's a great song, beautiful chords and that riff! I believe the acoustic guitar is played by John, but I could be wrong (my memory is not great anymore!).
I enjoyed this new Queen song, to me.. 🔥 I appreciate your reaction to it. It was at 2:26 that I heard the Queen sound.🎼💕 You can definitely hear some other influences. I enjoyed the laid back sound. Love the factoids you cite, in giving the song even more depth of meaning. ❤🎶 Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕
Hap, I subscribed today. Over 200 Queen reactions!!!!, how could I not. I've been listening to your reactions forever (in Queen awareness time) and have enjoyed them a lot. I'm an old lady (think 2 years younger than Freddie would be), and have thought of how much I'd love to meet you and give you a hug because I feel a connection to you as a Queen fan. Thanks for bringing so many great reactions to us, I appreciate your insights and enthusiasm as you listen. Some people have criticised you for interrupting and talking too much. Pay them no mind. This is your reaction and we want to hear what you think, and feel. If they want to listen uninterrupted they can go directly to a video of their choice and listen like the rest of us do when we want that. But I see reactions as places for fans to share their thoughts and love of the music. Thanks for what you bring to the table!! I am not familiar with this song but liked it a lot. I loved how Freddie made "dazzling" a three syllable word. My dictionary says two, but what do they know. I've always said Freddie could put more into one word than anybody else and this is further proof--daz-zle-ing. He made the word truly dazzle!!
This is actually the De Lane Lea studios (near Wembley) version that was recorded in approx` October 1971 and then later transplanted onto the debut album that was released in July 1973.

Coming of age in a world of teenage angst and confusion is the theme of that song. Adjusting your perfect inner world and expectations to the real world.

Queen were the first pop group to play in South Africa after the Apartheid back in the 1980’s and Crystal Palace were the first football team to play there as well.

I completely agree with you that this song has a very psychedelic Rock sound to it, and I would say appears a lot more dated than their other songs. Brian May said that when the band was first making their music, The Beetles were the Bible. This song mimics their sound a bit, which isn't surprising considering that the lyric literally reference Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
First album and they had a conflict with Trident studios in London where they recorded it. Trident Studios had a signature drum sound, the method in which drums were recorded. Sort of dead pan sound. They were after the big ambient room sound in their drums.
They started Queen when they were in college/University so they were teenagers or early 20s. The band was called Smile before Freddie Joined

You should have listened to modern times rock n' roll too. It's short and comes right after this song in the album.
Early Queen so ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Gives a shout out to Beatles. Lucy in the sky

Brian always fought with depression and still does. Yes. Coming of age and losing your idealism.
The song is about drugs because of the music scene back in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Prog Rock era.
Are you going to react to the Queen the greatest hits series they're doing here on youtube?? Or maybe you already watch those haha
