Chris Houlihan is such a lucky dude his name is etched into one of the greatest videogame franchises and will basically never be forgotten.
Houlihan is a big mystery to us, especially since all efforts to track him down have failed.
Some believe he never existed, as the mentioned Nintendo Power contest required one to get quite far in the original Final Fantasy and take a picture (with a camera in late 1990/early 91) of an enemy that had a very low chance of spawning and said contest never had an announced winner whereas all the other contests would announce their winners and the magazine would even revisit them years later, even the winner of the infamous The Mask 2 contest has come forth, and yet...no Chris Houlihan.
Others believe he did exist and did win, but tragically died shortly after and Nintendo decided to quietly drop all mention of the contest out of respect, with the room in Link to the Past being the only thing left of his legacy.
And others believe it was just put in there for fun and named after a friend of one of Nintendo of America's localizers.
We'll never know for certain until someone at Nintendo comes clean.
@@trustno173 Oh wow that is quite interesting i knew how hard the contest was and that fans were never able to track him down but this is quite intriguing hopefully it is just someone who dosen't want to be internet famous.
I have looked it up before, hoping to see who Chris was, but nothing. You have interesting theories. I would love to know the truth.

Indeed, though his hotdog-obsessed cousin Error Houlihan in Cadence of Hyrule is available for players to chat with in the odd event that they manage to escape the boundaries of Hyrule and fall into the void beyond. 😋
Cadence of Hyrule: If you manage to get out of bounds you find a secret house with a guy saying "I am Error." Speaking to him again he introduces himself as "Error Houlihan".

@@EggmanlandResident Yeah, it's becoming more rare to get a good team. It was pretty steady for a few years though. I never considered that the Hero Points rewards will be eventually locked!
The Mario Mask in Majora's Mask is a great easter egg, but also a very obvious one. There's a far more subtle easter egg on the mask selection screen: The second row of masks consists of the Keaton mask (a fox), the Bremen mask (a falcon), the bunny hood, the Don Gero mask (a frog) and the mask of scents (a pig), all of which lines up perfectly with Fox McCloud, Falco, Peppy, Slippy and Dengar from Starfox 64.

I'm going to be honest and say that I hadn't even noticed the Mario mask until today..... I've only ran through the game once since it was released and probably focused on otherstuff like his creepy face, but I genuinly had to google images from the original (not 3ds/gc versions) to see that it was actually there even then.... I feel kind of ashamed to not have noticed that before.
Also in twilight princess, if you attack a coocoo, instead of having a lot of coocoos attacking you, the game lets you play as a coocoo for a short period of time as a punishment, if there are enemies nearby they gonna try to attack you as you cannot attack them back

I didn't, though I do remember accidentally angering him when I first played the game because I just wanted to get back to rescuing the kids from the monkeys and I missed his explanation of how the store worked, but I think I accidentally grabbed something when I was just wanting to leave his store or something like that, so he suddenly got angry at me and I was like, "What is this game doing?!"

You probably didnt notice or didnt play the second quest. there is also a dungeon that look likes Links hat and Ganons head.
One of my fave Easter eggs of all the zelda series is about link's awakening dungeon face shrine. The map is a picture of link's face & the waterway is tears running down link's face because he's sad about finding out that koholint island will disappear if the wind fish is awaken.
Another Easter egg in Majora’s Mask is that if you go into the different band members’ areas in Zora Hall, you hear them playing different themes from older Zelda games, often ones with a dark connotation such as the jingle that plays upon Link’s death in the original or the sub-dungeon theme from A Link to the Past.

DS island, and the DS map on mario kart were my favorite. Something about the 4th wall being broken is always so funny and amazing, like links switch shirt in botw XD

Minish Cap is by far and away my favorite 2D Zelda game. It's just pure adorable. I got a sweet Ezlo cap, and my most recent score was the Link on a mushroom Gacha figure. Supposedly a chase exclusive in Japan, and I FINALLY scored mine off a dude in Italy.. however that works.
Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks are all priceless in their nostalgia factor.

Little advice about the "salesman bird" in TP:
You can avoid any problem by paying 1 rupee (he will say you should pay the total price), and then pay another rupee (he will say "thank you for your donation")
I actually had no idea that fighting the divine beast multiple times gives you more dialogue. Now I'm, going to have to go back and play it again.
I like that dispite Breath of the Wild being absolutely chock full of references to the other Zelda titles, down to locations re-appearing or being referenced like Mekkar's island referencing the first dungeon in Zelda, or the Arbiter's grounds or the Shrine island that references links awakening. you chose to go for the extremely obscure reference that most people would probably have missed.
I wonder if the actual Chris Houlihan will ever come forward in some form. Mind you, being the internet, would there even be a way to verify it?

I didn't know about the Chris Houlihan room. That's pretty damn neat. Ill boot up ALttP just to see it for myself. I also didn't know about the map layout of the Zelda 1 second quest, the Donkey Kong homage in the linked Oracle games or the chain chomp in Four Swords. I never played any of those and probably would never have learned about them if not for this video.

The golden Tingle statues are from the Tingle sidequests in the Wind Waker, as you probably know. These statues were pretty obscure in the original game. They are arguably even more obscure in the HD remake, because there is no in-game information that refers to them. But by the time of the remake some players already knew about them in the original game. So it's arguable in which game they were more hidden.
I have no idea why the Tuner was taken out of HD, it was perfect for singleplayer use with the gamepad.

Had no idea about Hyrule in Zelda II. I wondered why there was seemingly nothing to do in that area, figuring it was to get you to trigger more enemy encounters.
Nintendo even put out a hand drawn "world map" with Zelda II that highlighted this.

Ya know, I have to agree Minish Cap is my favorite 2D as well. It's just full of character and references. The music is amazing as well. Nostalgia at its finest in my book.
I love that the Mask Salesman's backpack also includes a mask of Golems/Putties from Kyoryuu Sentai Zyuranger/MMPR.

everytime i watch this type of video it always make me want to do a rerun of gba and nds zelda games, but 30mins later i ran out of dedication to finish them. then, the cycle continues.
1:56 I didn't know there was a simple way to do this. I like stealing things from Trill. You can do this easily by saving and quitting without facing his wrath.
Which was the exact way to get out of paying full price at the shop in Link's Awakening that is referenced here. Back then, you had to have the rupees necessary to buy the items you want, but if you saved and quit fast enough while the counter went down, the game would stop lowering your rupee total once you loaded the save state. That way, you could get the shovel or the bow and then keep most of the rupees you were supposed to pay, all without getting killed or branded a thief.

All the Zelda games for Gameboy and A Link to the past have been a major inspiration for me when making my own game, gameplay-wise. On the easteregg front too ofc!
I remember stumbling into the Chris Houlihan room through the entrance to Hyrule Castle you normally go through at the beginning of the game. Don't remember why I was going that way to begin with, only that I was dashing around with the Pegasus Boots, and it's the only time I ever saw it. Didn't know what triggered it at the time.

A new 2D Zelda would be really cool. That said, I would also like to see a remake of the Oracle games; perhaps even a remake that includes the scrapped third game.

@@Notorious_Notepad That depends on what you find easier in Zelda games: the puzzle-solving, or the action? I ask because the Oracle games focus on particular aspects of Zelda. Oracle of Ages puts strong emphasis on puzzle-solving, while Oracle of Seasons puts that same emphasis on action.
The scrapped third game was going to place emphasis on exploration.
Did I just watch a video about stuff I already know? Yes I did.

The one I'm most familiar with is in Oracle of Seasons: if you get caught blowing up the bomb boss' house, they force you to stay inside the powder keg, and once it goes up, you die followed by the game restarting.

Speaking of the paintings in ALBW, in Ravio's shop, there's a painting of a rupee, that when walked behind, gives Link one rupee.
9:28 when you go behind the mask, the music changes to a sinister song
The bird was a more obvious one for me. What’s more interesting in TP is how everyone isn’t directly named, but rather a portmanteau of prior Zelda characters. The old man who guides you to gerudo desert was Auru, obviously derived from Rauru. However, the funniest one to me is that Malon from Lon Lon Ranch’s successor is Malo, the baby faced child I imagine talking like the Brain from Pinky and the Brain who becomes an enterprising CEO out of nowhere, apparently. And is somehow able to buy the castle town store for 200 rupees when its cheapest products cost over 5,000 after you’ve paid 10 rupees to wash your shoes to enter. I’m guessing all the price gouging caused that store to fall on hard times. And they’d apparently rather sell the store outright than simply lower prices.

Knew almost all of these except I somehow never picked up on the similarity between DK arcade and Link’s Awakening, and I never got a chance to play Four Swords, so didn’t realize they’d used the chain chomp again from Awakening, that’s awesome! I remember hearing a rumor when I was a child that Zelda 2 was an extended land that was north of the map in Zelda 1. Now I know if was true.

You forgot to mention the portrait painting Easter eggs inside Hyrule castle you can see from Zelda’s courtyard in ocarina of time.
Probably too many Easter eggs to count in BoTW but you can see the shadows of loft wings when the dragons disappear into clouds!

In Majora's Mask, that isn't Elvis on the mask salesman's backpack, it's Jean Paul Belmondo. The Fairies are even named "Belle" and "Mondo" in one version
God I love Zelda. Never put it down since 2000 and I STILL learn about new Easter eggs even when I thought I knew them all (had no idea the dungeons in the first game spelled out ZELDA). Amazing
BowWow/Chain Chomps are found in Zelda games before Four Swords.. found in both Awakening and A Link to the Past and apparently according to an interview with Takashi Tezuka that while at the time when he was working on Super Mario he decided to put it in A Link to the Past first as a joke and that it was designed as an Zelda enemy before it was in Super Mario 3.
