I just can’t understand where these people get the balls and nerve to overtake people on blind corners. Genuinely what do they think as they do it? If I can’t see a clear stretch ahead I won’t even consider it and NEVER on a corner.
Even overtaking on a straight road with loads of visibility gives me a rush.
That was some hill as well, the cyclist is already putting effort into getting up it. They don't need to also need to worry about people taking legal overtakes as well.
I had someone pass me on a blind corner while I waited until I got a clear view so I could pass a cyclist. I only had to wait a few seconds until the straight. Knob in a Micra comes into view behind me, doesn't slow, passes me and the cyclist at probably 50-60 mph. Law broken for crossing double white lines and absolutely had no view of the oncoming traffic - it's a fast road and that was why I was being just that little bit more cautious. Sadly, he got away with it and will probably do it again until the day he doesn't. The good thing is that the Micra will offer him little protection when it all finally goes tits up.
@James Stewart It was a very steep hill from the looks. The guy was doing well to get up it at any kind of pace.
The problem isn't with his positioning. If anything you want to be on the left in case any oncoming traffic was to cut the bend.
The only thing they think is "Must get in front"! They don't care about anything as long as they're ahead of the cyclist

The last clip was underrated. It's amazing how many people think learners should know everything on the spot. Swearing and shouting at them because of little mistakes or not going bang on the speed limit. They don't realise they were once learners.
you tend to find those who slag on learner drivers are themselves no better at driving or worse.

In regard to that Audi on the roundabout and the reversing cammer. I think I'm familar with that roundabout and it's a really tricky one.
The foliage is thick and the roundabout is really big. So it's quite difficult to get a mental picture of its layout. And coupled with it being near Stansted airport it's full of people who don't know it very well... myself included when I find myself down there.
But JUST GO THE WRONG WAY if your last minute realisation is going to impact another person. You can always turn around.
Good drivers sometimes miss their turns.

That's a "drive it like it's stolen" mode of driving in that clip. Overtaking at a T-junction, then going through the red light on the wrong side of the road. I really wouldn't be surprised to find out that it was, in fact, stolen. Or someone who got their driving licence from GTA games.
When I saw them pass on the right I thought they were turning right, the left turn was completely unexpected

Reckon that Beamer in the 2nd clip was stolen; the whole way it was being driven was OTT even for BMW drivers.
I had one similar last week, driving on the wrong side of double white lines on a thirty limit windy, country road.
I laughed and went just a little slower all the way.
Was thinking the same thing. I'd of reported that to the police

Every day is a learning day. I always give learners extra thought & consideration. I was there, once. They need the help to gain confidence, not knocking into the kerb to shatter confidence and set them back. My driving (IMHO) has improved over time (unlike old git driving cammer a couple of weeks back), I no longer challenge other roads users, I try to read-through the likely events, but am frequently surprised at what other road users do (or don't do). Perhaps I have the benefit of over 45 years of accumulated driving skills to help me. Every day is a learning day.
5:17 This cyclist is really weird. He wears a helmet and a bright yellow jacket so you would think he cares about his safety, but then drives on thwewrong side of the road into oncoming traffic?!
Not only that, he cycled the wrong way around the roundabout, I've cycled down that very steep hill (Penarth near Cardiff) and it's very tempting to do what he did but it's wrong as well as dangerous so I don't and he gives cyclists a bad name.
The was a paramedic car parked earlier in the clip which was handy.
Perhaps he was rubbernecking at the... was it a recovery vehicle or a paramedic?, I don't remember now. But seemed he was looking that way, until he camera car pressed the horn.
@James Stewart Maybe, but I highly doubt it. Just one car needs to come at me to realise I'm doing something wrong.
With some people there does seem to be the impression that safety equipment is sufficient protection in itself, rather than it being extra help to the main protection of taking care.

I think I've learned more from watching your videos over the last 3 months than I have in the 15 years that I've been driving. Thanks Ashley, keep the videos coming, they're all brilliant. Also, 9:19, when I come across learners and I'm directly behind them, I leave more than plenty of space between myself and them. If it's busy, I'll make attempts to follow the learner at safe distances to possibly prevent impatient drivers taking my place and getting too close. I'll follow a learner for as long as I've got time to spare, and for as long as it's not stalker-like :)
One instance in the past, I had followed a learner for a fair while, and when they entered a car park I thought I'd call it quits and get a bit of shopping at the same time. I didn't expect the instructor to be waiting by my car when I came out of the shop! He asked me if I was following them and I said yes. He asked why and so I told him the same thing I'm explaining here and I've never before seen such a unique mixture of facial expressions in one go! He looked confused, thankful, and creeped out all at the same time.
I had the best of intentions, but I think I creeped out the instructor quite a bit, and I have no idea how the learner perceived it and I was too embarrassed to ask if they were ok. Since that awkward exchange, I make a point not to follow any learner for too long that it might affect the lesson.

So you've missed your turning, or you're running late for work, or something. What I always say is: Don't turn *your* mistake into *my* problem!
On the weaving car issue, I had this on the M4 in Wiltshire one night while driving an articulated truck, bearing in mind that my speed was limited to 56mph.
I caught up with a car weaving from lane to lane, and the hard shoulder, I'd already seen a Mercedes Sprinter van take evasive action, swerving into lane 3, not something I could do for manoeuvrability reasons as much as legal reasons.
I held back and dialled 999, this person was a danger! The controller asked me if the driver looked ill, or was using a phone, or if there were other people in the car. This was at night and modern cars with head restraints obscure the seat occupants so I was unable to see a thing.
I gave our position using the marker posts on the side of the motorway then waited until a police car arrived. I flipped the cruise control off to decelerate giving the police more space then pulled into the middle lane to pass clear when the car was blue lamped and pulled onto the hard shoulder.
I still have no idea what was going on, whether it was illness, drunkenness, or selfishness is a mystery to this day. It's just as well this happened in the early hours of the morning and not when the motorway was busy.
Many years ago, long before mobile phones, I was on the A3 northbound just south of the Kingston Bypass bit at night. A slower Metro ahead of me went straight on on the long left-hander, going from lane 1 to lane 3 and along the barrier with sparks flying for a few tens of yards, then carried on in lane 3 as if nothing had happened.
Well, at least the van at 7:00 kept a good distance to the cyclist when overtaking. 0_o
Beat me to it. There were no pedestrians in the vicinity looking to cross, so the van driver didn't endanger anyway and got past the two wheeled obstruction without problem.
@@I_Evo There were 'Keep to the left' arrows on the bollards in the traffic island.
@@I_Evo and Lemstrauss Circular road signs: Circular signs give orders - they must be followed to stay within the law. Circles with a red border tell you what you must not do (e.g. take a U-turn). Blue circles usually give a positive instruction, such as ‘turn left ahead’. So the van driver must go on the side where the arrow directs him too, it is not optional and could result in a dangerous driving charge if there was to be an accident. The police if they saw you doing that could do that anyway. There is a video on You Tube of a driver doing exactly this, they went wrong side of a pedestrian refuge just like this and hit a pedestrian who was crossing. The driver did not stop and neither were they aware that they had hit someone. They were convicted of causing serious injury due to dangerous driving, I think they were sent to prison, they received a mandatory driving ban and forfeited their driving licence and were returned to the status of a learner. They also would then have been told to drive again, that they must pass an extended driving test.
@@Graham196 Are you watching the right video? There were no pedestrians and certainly no accident. Just two road users make the most of the available road space to make progess and of course giving the cyclist more than the required space they now demand.

@4:59 or you could do what a kind person did for my Nephew's father-in-Law and attempt to get them to pull over. He was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain shortly after that. As luck would have it the person that pulled him over was a registered nurse who knew the symptoms.

of the three drivers this was the safest from a cyclists POV, the previous two were far too close, typical shit urban driving, the cyclist even gesticulates with his hand because the driver of the white car is too close and the second motorist is no better.
Yeah. While it is strictly illegal to go wrong way around the bollard, that was a very safe, but maybe an unexpected overtake from the cyclist POV. I'm not saying the van did the right thing, but he truly left our cyclist enough room. Had there been anyone crossing or oncoming traffic or someone pulling out, that could have had a bad ending, but in this case there wasn't.

Hi Ashley, nice to see a couple of clips from my neck of the woods, firstly the van being towed who became detached is on a back road from Bolsover to Shirebrook and the final clip is on the A6175 to Chesterfield, both in Derbyshire, so you see, we also have numpties up here too 👍🏼
2:55 Ditchling beacon. Its very popular for cycles since its the highest point in East Sussex. I've cycled up it a few times myself, although I tend to any go up it at very off peak hours (6am). Although everyone who drives up it knows how popular it is with cycles and the amount of blind bends and this was very poor judgement from that motorist.
I thought that stretch of road looked familiar. Good overtake by the cammer.
@@michaelgurd7477 It wasn't a good overtake, they were too close and cut in too quickly to boot. Should have gone fully into the opposite lane. Given how much effort of cyclist so possible swaying to the side and potential for having to move out due to road defects, this wasn't an A1 overtake by any means though appreciate they waited until they had a clear view.
Not the worst but not a 'good' overtake.
I have done that climb on more than a few occasions. In general, traffic is usually going fairly slowly anyway. However, in the summer it's probably best avoided due to its popularity with cyclists. They are often not going much faster than walking pace in parts.

Tip, if you use a sat nav or your phone to navigate and take the wrong turn or miss your turn, just carry on going ahead and let it re-route you.
I know #19 well, just up the road from me. There is always problems with merging there, because you essentially have a merge from the flyover(right) , THEN a merge from the overpass (left), and then there's a scramble to get in the lane you want for the upcoming A road roundabout.

The first clip is an example of why I don't agree when they say to not worry about stalling when doing an emergency stop. What if he stalled and the incoming traffic was closer or couldn't stop? Also this is where automatics help the safety because it would downshift for him too.

Good braking on the first clip, scary one.
Debris reports are extremely frequent. It’s only once debris is confirmed by police, HETO, or CCTV is the signal changed to debris (50).
Should anyone find debris they should call 999 or 0300 123 5000, giving the marker post number that can be seen on the blue board. These board are every 500 meters and tell you the motorway, direction of travel, and where you are.
And further to that, any report we get, the speeds of 60 will go up as soon as the report comes in. The signals would be changed if it's confirmed by a trusted source that it's there. If it takes 3 minutes for a call to reach the control centre, it could be another minute before the signals get put on. Further to that, any reports to the police get sent straight to the Highways England control rooms. As always, in an emergency, ring 999.
I've started using what3words as the call operators seem to prefer it.

@@midlandsdriver9667 - that's true but if I've ever had to call the emergency services whilst driving then more often than not I'm stationery anyway. I've used the orange phone boxes at the side of the motorway to report debris too and they can get your location from that.
I'd recommend everyone to download what3words - it's a game changer!
02:54 Cyclist myself, but there's some roads I would never go on. The beauty of a bike is it's portable and can cross terrains that a car :never could. So sometimes, unless you know the route you need to take, choose a different route!
One thing I see so often - people attempting to pull out of side roads, sat with the front of their car 3-4 feet from the give way markings, craning their neck as they are another few feet further back than the front of their car, in an attempt to see if it's clear to pull out, then getting frustrated and pulling out anyway at the worst possible moment. Spacial awareness seems to be lacking in these cases, but also just driving down the road by not getting back over to the left after passing a parked car, forcing oncoming vehicles to either drive in the gutter, or stop completely.
The amount of clips you get sent of people driving on the wrong side of the road is insane... There were 2 - 3 things that were a bit difficult during my driving lessons and tests when I did them, but never did I struggle with driving on the right side of the road.
If you can't drive on the correct side after passing your test then who the hell was your examiner that passed you? Stevie Wonder?

Lots of great analyses here as usual - great to understand your perspective on what non-fault drivers can do to mitigate these all too common scenarios for many. The one thing I wish you’d accept is that the horn and flashing lights are not only used to warn other people of your presence. It may be their “proper” meaning, but people often use them for other well-known reasons in certain situations, and I think this is something that needs to just be embraced & accepted in everyday driving. Loads of people will always beep the horn in anger and flash to let you go or say thank you, so why pretend this is fundamentally something that needs to change?
I will never accept anything that is used for anger on the roads and increases risk.
@@ashley_neal That’s fair enough, but there’s a difference between that and not accepting the fact that other people will always exist on the roads who use these in anger, or in ways that increase risk. The existence of these people as you know is inevitable, and sadly nothing can be done to eradicate all of them from the roads. All that more rational drivers can do, is adapt their own driving to mitigate risks caused by those others - and that’s generally why I and so many others like this channel, as that is what you focus on for the most part.
What I don’t understand, is why this is any different for people who supposedly misuse the horn or lights? If you know they are clearly using it for another reason than to warn you of their presence, what’s wrong with factoring their obvious intended meaning, in to the subsequent decisions you make as a driver?
Number 18 is RIngsend in Dublin, I'm about 2km from there, that little hump is horrible for visibility

Ash's comment near the end asking if people expect learners to drive perfectly made me think. Generally if I see L plates I give them space, but in the back of my mind is that there is an instructor in there who is on the ball on their behalf, so I never expect a dangerous move from a learner. Never actually seen a learner in an instructors car do anything dangerous or very unexpected at least. I'm 63 and I thought I'd seen it all - or most of it on 2 and four wheels for the last 45 years. Must have been lucky I guess.
Not a professional instructor in that case, and no dual-controls.
The cyclist incident at 2:52 is my local hill (Beacon Hill, Ditchling, Sussex). It's a notorious 1-mile climb of 1:3 where amateur cyclists try to get up every day of the week in one go without adequate training and they cause mayhem. Drivers get very impatient because you can literally be stuck behind walking cyclists for 5 minutes on the long blind bends. My slowest time in a car is 25 minutes. (Quickest time on a bike is 8 minutes) This kind of idiocy happens multiple times every day on that hill, and yes, most people do drive to fast the way down the hill so this guy was very lucky.
Last week I saw an ambulance in the rear view, so I pulled over to let it past just in case it hit the blue lights and needed overtake (bit of a tight road). I stopped, let it go by me, but I saw an old transit right up its backside.. it continued to tailgate and many times tried to overtake the ambulance, and for nearly 2 miles the transit we over the line and had to avoid over cars coming I the opposite direction. Luckily I caught on camera and git its plate.
It had no tax either.

Always leave plenty of space. Usually give you enough time to react to whatever happens in front of you.
09:44 Another point on that video is that the van in front of the ambulance didn't stop at the amber light, knowing with the trailer it wouldn't help the vehicle behind. Think it's worth a mention :)
Most of these clips require little input from me although there's two that stand out.....
The "erratically" driven BMW may well be stolen .... even a standard Bimmer driver isn't that reckless!
As for clip 9(?) - good shout. We can never assume drunk/high, or even on the phone. A 999 call is definitely in order.

What kind of driver am I?
The sort whom frequently finds oneself saying; 'I'll do your thinking for you shall I?' as I drive to negate someone else's mistake, poor awareness or plain fat headed impatience.
While I'm sure some of the people I think this as a result of, think they're amazing for getting the coveted prize of 'one car ahead', I smile knowing I'm the better driver and far safer than they are.
Your videos often reaffirm this, and have also helped me improve through many situations. Learning still 18 years after passing my test & I believe that willingness to is probably the key.
Yes. Same here. The missus is impressed sometimes when I say “he’s going to turn off. “Or “they’re lost. “. Trying to point stuff out to her about what I look at and when to react to something. 30 odd years on bikes helps i think.

7:30 When my brother & I had occasion to tow each other like these guys, one of us would call the other's mobile and put both phones on speaker at the start of the journey (family & friends tariff, lots of free minutes). Constant communication about what we were doing next, very handy.
I actually know that junction. Both roads go to the same village/town but to different parts of it. The tower was probably thinking straight on was best, since it's a truck route. Likely wider with less twists and turns. The right road that the van tried to take is very twisty and probably not suitable to tow on, I'd imagine.

in clip 19 it looked as though the honda in lane 2 was trying to force a gap between the VW and the other car in front. I think the honda could have slowed down a bit more and gone behind when they could see that the VW wasn't going to let them in.
They definitely could have, the driver could have let them in aswell tho... They signalled early enough.
The VW is another space-closer. It's unnecessary to floor it as soon as you see an indicator.
Yeah for that clip, I think both drivers could have done a better job. Either of them could have dropped back a little and there’d have been no problem
It's really easy to predict too, you speed up, hoping they'll make a gap for you, but if they're an asshole, closing the gap in front, guess what? They just created a gap behind them...
1:58 Random obstacles in the road and hazards are why it's a good idea to drive with Waze on, even if you're not using it to navigate anywhere.
Unfortunately, the van taking the wrong side of the bollard overtaking a cyclist is very common. Also had a boy racer overtake me like that on my driving test going round a bollard, on a blind bend. Next to a park.
There is a video where a woman driving carelessly is being followed, the cammer and passenger forecasting the accident she is very likely to have.
They didn't expect however, she would drive the wrong side of a traffic island, knocking down an old man in the process.
We are all learners. It's just that those with L plates need that extra room and consideration. Every journey starts with a single step.

@@CplBurdenR they so do!! Mixing speed with impatience just makes it a horrible piece of road! Everyone has to get ahead then slam their brakes as they get to the speed camera! I try and avoid if I can!!
7:19 Probably a Viofo camera. They beep 3 times if you hit the save button once for some reason if you have the audio for button presses activated.
So glad you pointed out the motorway display screen with the debris in the road, what bugs me is the times when you are struggling to see where you are going because of fog then you have to take you eyes off the road later on to read the display to read ‘caution fog’

5.56 I’m not sure about modern engines but when old diesel lorries slow right down to crawling pace to turn at sharp bends the engines become inefficient and some of the fuel can pass through Un-burnt so it comes out of the exhaust and coats the road normally at small roundabouts, this is 0k until it rains and you then have an ice rink.

07:00. Motorbikes are constantly doing this in London. They constantly go around the bollards and even sometimes traffic lights, when there is standing traffic. Also. I really don't understand why so many mistreat learner drivers. It makes no sense. I mean, we all were learners at one stage, and all would've made mistakes during our driving lessons. Do these people not remember how it felt to be nervous whilst learning to drive?

7:17, I've learnt the hard way that people change their mind after committing to an exit, fortunately I had a dash cam, not sure though that the cam car should've reversed back to take his/her exit though.
I was driving on a duel carriage way the other day with a roundabout up a head, the car in front of me wanted to move from lane 1 to lane 2 so she could turn right at the upcoming roundabout, she signalled but there was 2 cars next to her and neither of them wanted to slow down to let her change lanes. I dropped back in anticipation of her slowing down to pull out behind the cars but instead she just sat there going the same speed as them with her signal going the whole time, until it was almost too late to get into that lane before we were at the roundabout. She then slammed on hard to change lanes. Good job left I bus length between us.

That's happened to me loads of times one guy on the left as flashed me the guy coming up on the right doesn't so I've still got to a stand at the junction and then the guy on the left get impatient with me and decides to drive of shaking his head
2:00 It has just been reported by the truck on the hard shoulder, and they probably can't pinpoint their precise location, so the control centre would just put a warning up between two points. Most likely the gantries further back also have the warning at that point.

7:00 Ill admit ive never done that in a car, but on my motorcycle, hundreds of times. So long as there is no oncoming traffic, i dont see the problem.
Technically it’s against the law as you are ignoring the ‘keep left’ sign on the bollard. Not very safe for pedestrians wanting to cross and not expecting traffic to approach from that direction.

a car once tried to overtake my father while he was on a bicycle, same scenario as at 6:57, just that the car driver punctured his tire and most likely broke the axle on the impact of the centre island, as we call it.
6:55 tbh I'm way happier with the van driver than I am with the other two. That's a pass that definitely won't kill the cyclist. There's no emerging road on that side, he can see the junction to the left, and it's a straight road so he can se he's got space for it. Good overtake.

in clip 3, we can say the problem is solved for our cammer, but its certainly not over for everyone else on the road! just hope that guy does not kill anyone before he learns to be a better road-user, or leaves the road....
I often comment on other dash cam videos, that 5% less throttle and 100% more courteous driving would mean all these DashCam Channels would have no footage to show!
