I'm the cyclist in clip 11 starting at 7:15 and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with your analysis but I think it reflects a learning point for yourself if I may. I'm glad to see that some of your viewers have it on the money too in the comments. I gave you some reflections I made in the initial email but you probably don't have that to hand when recording audio. Everything about the car's position, from a left position at the junction he joins from, selecting the lane to take the first left, and maintaining a position to take the second left predicts against him taking the right turn he did. The learning point for yourself is that the speed of cyclists is very dependant on the gradient and you need to be aware of gradient changes to predict cyclists' actions. I do not in-fact accelerate down the hill but maintain my speed by coming off the power completely and gently applying the brakes. Further, for the duration of the road I am not in the blind spot (I recall seeing the face of the driver). as he brakes for the speed hump, at which point I am not in the blind spot. Though I was suspicious of the car as it emerged from the junction, the point at which I realise the risk increases is when he continues to brake after the zebra crossing and it is at the point the he brakes hard that I enter the blind spot which is the key point of my reflection. My road position, being to the right of him is good if he turns left or continues straight and communicates to following vehicles my intention that they should not be overtaking at this point. Your comment that I have "very little road sense" is I think deeply unfair and represents a lapse in the integrity of your analysis.
Thanks a lot for first of all sending in the clip and secondly your response. I knew that you wouldn’t be overjoyed with my analysis but unfortunately it still stands. When you mention gradient in relation to predict a cyclists actions I shake my head in disbelief. Just use your brakes more! If I had a collision because I was too close to someone I wouldn’t dream of saying “I was going downhill” Too often the road cyclist has little else on their mind other than rate of travel, and too few pick their time to use speed at sensible times. You even admit in your own comment when risk was increasing, but at that same point alarm bells had been ringing in my head for a while. If you had concerns about the emerging vehicle at the start and rode how you did, it ratifies my quote of “Little road sense” I expect you to also to be less than happy with my response, but sometimes what seems to be a harsh word can teach us most. Please see my words in the way they are meant, which is to increase road safety and reduce risk for yourself and everyone who reads this. Kindest regards, Ashley.
Basically, he is saying (and thinking) that cycles are second class vehicles and should concede to cars at all times, and probably shouldn't be on the roads at all. Very poor analysis. How dare you ride so fast !!
BTW @Alan Jones did you watch the video? Perhaps you should to see how many of the clips are “Pro” cyclist. This alone makes a mockery of the words you type. This channel is all about road safety and if more roadies took my advice rather than jumping to each other’s defence all the time, less would be statistics in RTC’s. If you think before you ride as much as you do before you type, you’re in trouble.
I think a brief observation comment and a discussion later would have been better. Overloading a new driver with information - without dual controls - is irresponsible and further distracts them from the road like if they were taking part in a phone call.
@@justanotherviewer4821 Sometimes a good telling off does the trick, especially with the hazard perception, and the thinking of “what if your brakes fail” it opens the mind to other thoughts then and there and then they will use that from that second on as a reaction of “oh sh*t, yeah he’s right”
I never over or undertake on a roundabout unless there is a queue in their lane, it has saved me so many times when a car has changed lanes , and drivers don't always indicate. The father and son incident was good , the son was speeding towards the cyclist , the dad explained you can't see what might come over the hill towards you, and there was a solid white line , stating this to stay in between the lane lines.
I mean for me it just crazy , use some common sense not to jump straight to middle lane it doesnt matter there are cars or not . You never know who can come very fast from back .
Made my comment for me 🙂. It’s an appalling practice. Not even ten seconds to look and figure out what’s happening. Always gotta keep an eye out for these people joining the motorway.
I was about to comment exactly this, why can't people sit in the left lane and mirror check/blind spot. Everyone is in a hurry to get into another lane that causes an accident and then blames the other driver.
Clip 7 is one that highlights a big problem on UK roads, people fly onto roundabouts and then complain when someone pulls out in front of them without ever considering if their own speed is the problem. Had a few arguments with friends about it after they've blasted their horn at someone who clearly made the best decision that they could.
Also we need to understand that not everyone has the same ability/confidence to drive as we might have and I think that causes a lot of frustration and impatience from other drivers.
Learning to drive ??? Many instructors just teach pupils to pass the test. There is a big difference in knowing how to drive to pass your test, and how to drive on the roads "for real".
"second part of driving is to understand the psychological aspects of road users." Which is a very easy and quick lesson. They are all insane and incompetent. Stick to that and you won't go far wrong.
6:36 "There is no such thing as a perfect driver ... it's how you deal with other people's mistakes which sets you apart". A great mindset to have every time we get behind the wheel.
I suffered with really bad anger towards other drivers when they made a simple mistake or when ever I was tailgated. Eventually, my stress lead to being involved in an crash. My lesson I'm teaching myself by watching your videos, is to let things go, remind other drivers they made a mistake and carry on with my day. Your description of the events happening in these videos gives me that gentle reminder of how to react in different situations. Keep up the fantastic work Ash!!
Indeed. Yes Mr Lorry driver messed up. It happens. Maybe his sat nav was a bit slow that day. If it were me, I would have just had a shake of the head and a tut or two, and a few quiet words to myself and let the lorry in. It wouldn't have inconvenienced / endangered me any.
@@gixxerman69 My satnav is always slow, heck, sometimes I've left the roundabout it's now telling me to read. That's google maps through android auto on the built in dash thing. Nightmare! It's more annoying the fact it's a bloody red light!
It seems like a lot of collisions or problems could be avoided if every road user does proper checks for the current situation, and also be more calmer if others make mistakes. Even the best drivers will make mistakes sometimes. No point in getting angry about it!
Yep the MGIF (must get in front) was strong in Jarrod, as it is in a lot a motorists. The times I have been close passed whilst cycling just so the car can get to the red light 3 seconds sooner.
I don't think Jarrod was doing it on purpose, therefore it's not a must get in front incident. A lot of drivers fixate on the things that they are most scared of and see little else. This is the most likely cause of this incident.👍🏼
@@ashley_neal Fair point. To be fair, most MGIF incidents that I have witnessed are not malicious, but the result of drivers just not thinking or planning ahead. They see a cyclist and immediately think they will be travelling slowly, therefore they need to be in front of them. Almost a case target fixation it seems. On the rare occaisions that I have discussed the MGIF with them, most were unaware that they had done something silly. I did have one very baffling one though. A driver passed me (30 limit and I was doing about 20) and immediately after passing me they turned left into a side road causing me to have to brake quite sharply (a classic left hook). It was such a bad bit of driving I thought a word or two was in order. Having asked why they overtook so near to when they were going to turn, the driver simply replied that they "wanted to get past me". I explained that what they did was dangerous and pointless, but they just couldn't see it, and just kept repeating that they wanted to get past me. Oh and to ice the cake, so to speak, they couldn't resist spouting out the tired old road tax nonsense. I left it there as some people, it seems, are beyond help.
My biggest worry with cyclists "holding people up" is at least 1 person will be impatient and almost cause an accident if a bigger vehicle is in front. I will happily sit behind a cyclist for miles on end but as soon as another vehicle turns up I start over thinking.
@@Asfixiator7 The annoying thing with cyclists is that they are on very fast roads doing tractor speed. It's very easy to be doing 50 on a corner and meet a cyclist in a precarious position.
Something just gave me a laugh whilst watching this. On one of the clips when the cammer blasted their horn, someone got cut up outside my house and blasted their horn at the same time. It confused me a bit because it sounded like my phone suddenly got surround sound.
J H no one was injured thankfully, and I’m not sure what repercussions there were for the other driver. All my repairs were done through their insurance though.
3:20 I get this all the time as an HGV Driver - so many people enter roundabouts too fast and get a sudden surprise that im pulling out in front of them (because they were invisible at the time I was entering the roundabout) at a low speed and blocking their whole path. It is ridiculous
I literally just had this coming home tonight from cannock and heading onto the M6. I was at a roundabout where my immediate right is covered by a sharp corner and I can't see round it. I'm approaching at 15 in second and out of nowhere a white golf comes flying out, clearly too fast for the roundabout and I have to slam on the breaks half on the roundabout. Approach speed is as important as making sure it's safe, he would have been part blame if I'd hit him because of his idiocy thinking the roads are empty at 11pm.
2nd roundabout north of my depot is a nightmare, blind to traffic to the right until it’s 30-60m from the junction, plus a delightful lag on the pedal to gas (modern computerised sh**e) in the auto unit, you just get going & have to stop so often it reaches the point where stopping again is dangerous so you just gotta go, while matey is heavy on the horn and brakes cos They were going too fast.
5:15 It's beyond ridiculous what they'll class as a write off. It's only dented 2 doors, a quarter panel, and some very light damage on the other panels. Such a shame because it's a practically brand new car which looks very repairable. I hate car insurance companies.
If it's classed as a write off (if it exceeds a % of the value of the car) then it will be sold at auction as damaged but repairable. It won't be crushed if it is deemed repairable.
I think many people are underestimating how much of a precision instrument cars are these days with all of the sensors that are in it. It's easy to get something misaligned after such a collision.
13:55 "... this series has turned into an absolute gem ..." I totally agree with you. Although I am not a UK resident&driver (well, not a driver at all; I have an Austrian "B" DL but am using public transport here in Vienna; unemployed and low income and I finally got my own living space 2 years ago, now it's on to claiming and holding my Call Centre Agent job - I'm 40!) I really appreciate the detailed and analytic UK way of teaching traffic awareness. Your advice might be valuable and help me if I was ever to sit down in the driver's seat and operate the car & traffic around me! BIIIIIG Thanks to you, Ash!
Jared's passenger is 100% right about how he handled the situation but he isn't a "speeding boy racer" when he's doing 40-44mph in a 50mph that looks like it should be 60mph lol.
i like the jared clip his dad i think gave a perfect bollocking and explained it all to a tee, he probably felt stupid after but it was a good life lesson
fur king el if someone drives like that when learning they need to be taken off the roads completely that was completely mindless reckless and irresponsible of Jared to continue at the same rate of speed on approaching the cyclist he should of slowed in advance as his father says in the clip until he could see that the road was clear as he was also on a hill
@@JamesA1 My only issue with what the dad said is "you were speeding", the road was a 50 and according to the cam he was doing 45, even if you want to claim the GPS in the cam isnt accurate it wouldnt be so far inaccurate that 46 could be significantly over 50, maybe the car registered 52 at most there. I have this issue with my car and know for a fact my speedo is significantly off at higher speeds as when following it for 70 on the motorway im being overtaken by everything, and my dads car says hes doing 63 when following me at "70"
My favourite clip has to be the lorry driver taking the trouble - and risk - of warning other motorists. A sportsman would get an OBE for less. When an Earl gets an OBE do they become an Earlobe?
At my uni there is a lecturer called Dr Earl and me and my friends call him Earlobe precisely for this reason (although he doesn't have an OBE, but we wish he did)
first time finding this channel and at last you tube clips to educate and not gratify mistakes/ inexperience or attitude. My father taught me to drive in the late 70's and his best advice was " 50% of driving is anticipation " . Still use it now.
I can honestly say that since I have started watching your videos, I have learned to be much more patient and a much better driver. I never thought I could ever drive this calmley. Thank you so much!!
It is a great car tht was only 3 months old at the time of the accident. No change to insurance yet though, all repairs were sorted by the other persons insurance
@@thomasdavies442 was only saying as I've got the same car vw polo beats, same colour and same alloys. Hope it got sorted, lovely dub/vag car it is tbh. The amount of unexperienced drivers on road is crazy, even if you're safe, that doesn't mean others will be 😟 The polo gti+ is a spaceship
2:46 Blind spot was no excuse for that. Besides a mirror, you are also provided with a window for your convenience. 11:57 Seemed quite reasonable for that car to come out in that gap. I live in a town known for its roundabouts and you really have to take these gaps or you will be sitting there all day. 13:18 That can happen when parking on the wrong side. Someone in a van parks in front of you and blocks your visibility when you want to get out.
Lots of interesting and thought provoking clips and commentary - great selection. I think Jarrod is my favourite. Feel sorry for the Polo driver. I wonder if the young lady who lost her wing mirror knew about acceleration sense and engine braking going down that hill? I'd like also if I may to share something that happened the other day. I was out in my wife's Fiesta doing my usual trying to make safe progress within the speed limit. I had a young lad in another Fiesta behind me. He was following close and I could see from the scowl he had on him that he was getting impatient. Sure enough he went tearing past at the first marginal opportunity, cut in front and then roared off onto the dual carriageway going straight across three lanes of traffic. Instead of getting wound up I thought "driving fail" and the thought made me smile. I had to think twice though a little further up the road where I made a mistake myself. Nothing too drastic but a little lapse meant I went a bit off line and had to correct sharply enough for my daughter in the back to notice. She said "but daddy, I thought you watched Ashley Neal?" We both had to agree that I might well have made it onto driving fail myself in that instance.
Clip 6 - yeah blind spot but no excuse for not moving your head and looking imo Clip 11 - Blind spot or not the car is aware he was there, He saw him in that lane seconds earlier at the give way. The cyclist didn't accelerate both of them are on the brakes (check his levers), he knew the danger he was not going up the side of it. You can't completely stop every time a driver could do something crazy, the car turned right from the left lane without indicating (until after the turn) Cyclist slowed and left himself enough room to be able to avoid the car. Taking it to its logical extreme... If you were cycling along a major road and a car was waiting on the minor would you stop just in case the driver decided to pull out on top of you? you would have put yourself in that danger by cycling in front of him. Clip 13 - Malory could see a junction ahead but matched speed just behind a large vehicle that was turning in this would make her completely invisible to any car that would be waiting to pull out, didn't she put herself in that position like the cyclist in clip 11?
For clip 11, never assume a driver saw. "Looked but did not see" is a very common factor in collisions at junctions, perhaps the single most prevalent factor.
Clip 12; I’ve been faced with a similar bad overtake, I was driving an 18tonne truck, a cyclist coming toward me, car behind them going at quite a lick so I eased off the gas, gently braked, and the car decided against the overtake. I eased back on the gas, & the car went for it. One emergency stop, 3 write offs & one life saved. Was toward the end of the last shift of 6, with, up to then, NO harsh braking events. (Luckily we Don’t have a bonus linked to driving, but even if we did, I’d rather avoid the crash than get the bonus). Jarod’s lecture... fair review. Clip 18. Damned good advice Ashley. And yes, I would guess a good 30+% of dashcam compilation clips are roundabouts like that
Clip 15 was spot on, the passenger was right to explain the drivers failings, also too many people feel the need to get some revenge after being cut up etc on the roads and that's when things go wrong to a bigger degree at times, I don't see the need to blast the horn at someone or continue to flash the lights for the next half mile, i just smile, let them get on with their driving and continue on my way, really enjoy watching your content, keep up the god work.
You make some great points. I really dislike this culture of knowing fine well how to avoid a situation (say, seeing someone joining a motorway for example) and drivers speeding up and not adjusting their speed to allow a smooth join from the other vehicle.....and then blasting their horn! It is completely unnecessary and the more I see of dash cam footage allegedly showing ANOTHER vehicle at fault.....it is actually the dash cammer that is the bad driver.
It’s not so much the concept, more the way all ALR Smart Motorways are built following the trial build (M42). The original build and concept had refuges every 800m, and automatic camera monitoring throughout, so any issues were picked up within seconds and controls put out. AFTER the trial, to save money, refuges every 2KM, large stretches not covered with ANY camera, and few automatic cameras, so issues can have resulted in multiple collisions before controls come in.
@@paulcollyer801 Honestly I think there needs to be some important changes to the law and driving culture in the UK to make them work safely also. First and foremost on that list would be implementing a law similar to Germany mandating the creation of an emergency lane upon joining stationary traffic. In effect this would mean something like lane 1 must form a queue as far to the left as possible when traffic stalls, similarly to the right for all other lanes thus creating a gap between lanes 1 and 2 for EV's. This would in effect remove the need for a dedicated hard shoulder for emergency access since the space is created dynamically when traffic stalls enough for it to be needed since ultimately this only really becomes essential when traffic stalls and queues bumper to bumper. Blue lights and exemptions are usually adequate to make progress in flowing traffic but a complete stall is another matter. Granted this still doesn't solve the issue of providing a safe space for sudden breakdowns where even limping a relatively short (
@@seraphina985, you speak wise words. Ftr, the original plan for All Lane Running Had full coverage with radar & cameras, and was very rapid in responding with lane closures, but as with so much these days, the demo kit is perfect, the production is not.
Worst part about dashcams is the cammers making mistakes and passing it off to the other driver who couldn't have known otherwise and making things worse. Glad there weren't any serious incidents here.
Technically he wasn’t even speeding though. You can see his GPS speed at the bottom of the clip and you can see the road signs that state the road has a 50mph limit. He approached the cyclist a little too fast, but never was speeding. Blithering werriting idiot in the passenger seat is more dangerous.
@@sinista.productions I mean someone who overtakes a cyclist on a blind hill is more dangerous than a moaning passenger. Sure the passenger is overreacting about his speed but his point about approaching the cyclist at speed without planning ahead is spot on.
9:08 for clip 13 is a common mistake. The driver pulling out is only seeing the car pulling in, which obscures the car behind it (the cam car). We need to be thinking about what traffic can hide. Could it hide a bike, motorcycle, or in a different scenario, a pedestrian (?).
When you are taught to drive you should be taught if you think it's not safe, don't go. If you can't be sure it's clear then, in that case don't go. Yes you might miss a gap, but you've also potentially saved a hell of a lot of insurance money.
Ashley, I have seen and been involved in many near misses on roundabouts and I would suggest that the advice should be DO NOT EVER TRY TO OVERTAKE OR UNDERTAKE on roundabouts. One should expect that people may change lanes on roundabouts, they may not be familiar with the road layout. I have seen and been involved in many near misses on roundabouts. One often sees people in cars having nearly misses trying to pass articulate trucks on roundabout where the truck trailer unavoidably drift into their adjacent lane and the car is probably in the truck drivers blind spot. One of my pet hates is where people try to pass as they are turning right when I am going straight on, on what are essentially single lane roundabouts.
7:37 i think the skoda knew what he was doing and saw the cyclist the whole way as this was a one way street he had the wrong lane to turn right, no indicator and sudden steering all to just get ahead of the cyclist. im a keen cyclist also and wouldve been just as aware but to be fair the cyclist had no idea the skoda was going to turn until.. he did.. suddenly i guess i dont know how to end that in english
The clip with the mini flying over a roundabout, I get that all the time while driving my work truck. Obviously a truck is slower at accelerating because its heavy and on roundabouts where there is no entrance onto the roundabout from my 12 oclock, people will just keep their foot down and come flying up behind me while I'm turning left. It's even worse when the view down the road from the right is restricted because of trees or a hedge and all you can see is maybe 20 feet of road at that entrance to the roundabout. But as my instructor said "if they don't stop they'll hit you and that's on them, they were not on the roundabout when you pulled out so you did nothing wrong. You give way to whats on the roundabout not whats coming up to the roundabout"
Roundabouts have to be my pet hate in the uk! People don’t understand what lane to be in, they don’t understand it’s give way to the right or traffic already on the roundabout, they can’t stay in their lane they take the race line, they fly onto the roundabout making it difficult for larger slower vehicles to safely join, they go flying past other vehicles giving that car ahead no room for an error, there’s so much more I could ramble on about 😂
And mini roundabouts, how many drivers don't even attempt to go around the circle painted on the road, even when it's an actual hump! They end up driving directly at a vehicle attempting to clear the roundabout, when had they cornered properly they would nicely tuck behind it and keep things flowing well. Same with straight-lining roundabouts, pure laziness with steering! 😠😂
Itchy Scratch totally agree and when you enter a mini roundabout with caution because you can’t see traffic to the right and they floor it at you? They don’t realise they have to give way to you already on it!
That polo shouldn't be write off, its 2 doors and a rear quarter panel as long as no structural damage underneath. With how new the car is I camt see that being written off. Both those doors only cost 2 to 300 to fix each
The Jared clip is the best in this compilation for me. Then clip 20 the view says to the car coming out of the parking space to watch what they are doing, and they are! They stopped! Some would say they were facing the wrong way, which is true, but they would probably only look over their shoulder less.
The absolute arrogance of the truck cutting in at the last minute forcing the car to take evasive action borders on 'driving without due care'. There was ample time and a huge gap behind the car to get in for the exit, but no, he must get one more vehicle ahead. Totally pointless as he has to stop at the lights with the traffic. The car driver however as Ashley says does himself no favours by losing his temper. Far better to have complained to the company and sent your clip in to them (and the dvsa) so they could educate their driver etc. The lorry will no doubt have multiple cameras that would back up the car driver's evidence,. Unfortunately with all that horn blowing and actually trying to keep the truck out with his road position, he has lost the moral high ground. The horn means 'I am here'. The truck driver knows you are there because he has deliberately decided to carve you up, so all the anger means nothing to him. Before anyone says the truck driver may not know the area etc, the incident was at Darford and the company are based at Purfleet a few miles away. The fact the driver exited at the leftmost exit of a multi lane slip shows he knew the area. Possibly as a bulk vehicle he is doing multiple short trips in a day and is frustrated at the traffic impeding him. Not worth arguing with a truck, they know they will win.
Clip #10, I do get miffed when this happens to me, loads of space behind me but the vehicle joining my lane can't join behind me, it has to join ahead and I have to brake to get a safe separation. But the cammers reaction is so out of proportion. But Jared getting told was the fav clip.
6:00 clip at dartford I understand his frustration, it’s on my commute everyday you get that or worse. Clear road behind and they’ll cut you up to get 1 car in front, hard breaking in the live lane or even stopping in the live lane, just to get 1 or 2 cars in front. The signs start 2 miles back. They just cause tailbacks in the left lane and crashes that can easily put an hour on your commute,
I doubt the lorry did this intentionally to get in front. The cammer wouldn't even have had to break to let the lorry in. It's behaviour like the cammer showed that causes the crashes, not the lorry.
I said I understand his frustration not that he was right If you watch the clip even if the camera car had let the lorry in the lorry would have had to break and slow right down in the live lane to get across, in that instance I would have said that the lorry should have carried on to the next exit because having to do actions like that to get the exit means you’ve missed the exit
Clip #4. What would be your advice for dealing with this situation? Should you undertake the lane-hogger as the cammer and the other cars in this clip did (although I noticed the cammer moved to the far left hand lane to minimise risk)? Or should you stay behind the lane-hogger (at a safe distance of course) until they change lanes? And is a flash of the lights acceptable / helpful in this situation?
@@ashley_neal Suggesting that the undertake by the white BMW was not safe? If this happened on a two lane carriageway, it would not be possible to leave a lane gap so you always run the risk of the car you're undertaking moving left at any time. That's why I tend to stay behind anybody I catch up on the outside lane until I can overtake safely on the right.
He’s probably sent it to every other dashcam channel on TH-cam and been slagged off in the comments in every last one of them so thought he’d try here instead so he could finally find someone who agrees with him… Nope!
I think as other comments have pointed out that the criticism of the cyclist is incorrect. The road positioning and observation of the other vehicle is what is at fault in the clip, and the cyclist has not been given information they can use to anticipate the driver’s next action. The other driver should have seen where the cyclist was. It takes time to remove yourself from a vehicle’s blind spot when they have put you there. The vehicle pulling onto the roundabout from the supermarket is the opposite. An argument can be made that the vehicle waiting to exit the supermarket should anticipate vehicles driving fast across a roundabout that handles through traffic, especially where they have waited and looked for so long. It is a misjudgement of speed. The fact that the mini is speeding doesn’t change that it should still be given-way to. To criticise one of these without any criticism of the other is unfair.
I find it so baffling that people don’t look on roundabouts like @5:05 I see it daily, would’ve slowed when that other car approached the roundabout - was obvious they weren’t gonna stop. Also I always wonder how lane hogs don’t notice that everyone is padding them on the wrong side
The last one, parking into oncoming traffic, I will try my hardest if possible to park on the side of the road of which the traffic is facing to stop this from happening.
Wasn't expecting to run into a clip from somewhere I know here but that clip at 3:03 is coming out of the Morrisons car park in Wellington, Telford. That's no more than a 2-3 minute cycle from where I was living before Brexit forced me to move my business out of the UK. Strange to see somewhere so familiar though guess its a small world out there after all heh.
I liked the cyclist clip most. Especially the end bit "you cut me of there, mate", no extremely angry respons. I liked you commentary in the clip with the guy getting extremely angry at the truck the most. 90% of driving is fixing the mistakes of others. If you're not prepared to do that, don't drive.
What is the best thing to do when being tailgated by an HGV? Saw one yesterday 5ft behind a small car which had nowhere to go. Slow down gradually then accelerate away? I’d be worried about the slowing down bit. Put hazards on? It is scary.
5:02 is common practice in here :)). and worse than that is sometimes you stop on give way line for traffic inside roundabout and the drivers behind start honking and gesturing :/
3:14 I had something similar happen. Coming onto a roundabout I couldn't see onto the exit of the dual carriage way that far, but plenty enough to get out in time and speed up, which is limited to 50mph anyway, now bare in mind this roundabout is light controlled, but where I'm coming onto it isn't. There's is green. So barely any cars coming through, it's clear and I exit, when I get to the center lane, a car then becomes visible that's approaching really fast from the dual carriageway (probably speeding too) and has to lock on their wheels. Like, slow the hell down you're approaching a roundabout at stupid speeds for one, and chances of them going in the lane they're supposed to be was slim. Yet, it was somehow my fault and they blasted the horn. Actually appalling how some people use roundabouts.
I get goosebumps when I see the BMW steering wheel in the intro everytime, the music helps too..I’m hoping to get the m3 competition but maybe I’ll have to get divorced first
Two types of people watch these clips. The first watch them to see stupid drivers and laugh at their mistakes. They think they are the worlds best drivers. The second type watch them to learn how to improve their own driving and avoid getting in the same situations. These people are actually the better drivers in the end.
It only takes a second or two to check the blind spots before moving over. As someone who used to be on a small motorbike, please, please, take that time to check. Motorcyclists and cyclists are so vulnerable. As a driver now I am much more aware of this, as when on two wheels you have to act like everyone is out to kill you and be super prepared for silly manoeuvres because people don't take the time to check properly. Now there's more traffic on the road as lockdown eases, please stay safe out there!
13:18 My only issue with this clip besides what Ashley stated is the fact the car has to pull out to be able to see, fair enough if it had been a left hand drive but this is where hazard perception comes into play. I've had a similar instance before with a van parked on the corner of a junction and had to creep out and the guy coming towards me wasn't happy however I can't sit there all day and not go.
Yeh, cars (or worse, big vans) parked on junction corners are a pain and like you say all you can do is creep out. However when parking up yourself you can help avoid "blind" emerging by facing the right way. The 4x4 driver in the clip isn't entirely innocent for this close call.
I think I like clip 2 best - someone actually taking some personal responsibility to actively avoid an incident, whilst remaining relatively safe behind the barrier. But if he's made it that far down the carriageway, what are the CCTV operators doing - surely there is meant to be surveillance and gantry signs for blocked lanes to cover exactly this situation?
I sent this in Andy there were no warnings on any gantrys, in fact they were showing National speed limit. The guy worked for a railways company in wales, which is probably where he got his flag waving skills from he was doing a great job. This was an uphill section at Tibshelf M1 services with trucks constantly overtaking.👍
@Jon C I wasn't sure if it was a red flag (I'm a motor sport marshal, so notice that kind of thing), or orange Sainsbury's bag. I know Tibshelf well - just up the lane from me in Notts.
@@andyowens5494 I messaged the company and asked them to thank the driver for his commendable actions, they said thanks and would pass on the message. I bet he doesn't know he made it on to TH-cam. 😄
@5:00 situation is common for me (happens about 10 times in past 5 years), but as a biker, always paying attention for cars coming from left, so never crashed, and because riding a bike, i've got more "space" to escape. Still very dangerous...
I watch quite a few of these compilation videos (mostly but not all American - a lot of their mistakes happen in the UK too) but this channel, along with its driving instruction videos from Ashley is by a significant margin the best learning channel I've encountered. You'll get used to recognising the 'body language' of the confused and the stupid drivers and learn to anticipate their actions. As is stated, it is how you react to other people's mistakes that sets you apart as a driver. At least you're here, watching and learning, not imagining you already know it all. All the best with the lessons.
@@midlandsdriver9667 Wow... you've been driving for 10 years, drive for a living (i.e. driving regularly), AND you even say you work on the motorways... yet you're big enough to say you're still learning!!! I salute you! 👏👏👍👍👍
Ashley, I've had a look through your videos and I haven't seen anything which relates to it... Could you make a video detailing what to do in an accident? Such as swapping details, taking photos, etc. It'd be very handy because it's not something a lot of people think about, especially those who have never been in an accident.
No, far from it. I'm a cyclist myself but I don't treat every ride like the Tour de France!
After watching that clip, the Skoda has it's indicators on, you couldn't have slowed down and let him turn?
BTW @Alan Jones did you watch the video? Perhaps you should to see how many of the clips are “Pro” cyclist. This alone makes a mockery of the words you type. This channel is all about road safety and if more roadies took my advice rather than jumping to each other’s defence all the time, less would be statistics in RTC’s. If you think before you ride as much as you do before you type, you’re in trouble.
Get told Jared!!!
Didn't expect to see you here Jack 😂
What's Jack doing ere?
Not from your dedicated driving Channel hm?
Wtf are you doing here
Bruh, this aint your area of TH-cam lmao
The dad scolding his son was funny and the last one was probably the son on his own 😂😂😂
I think a brief observation comment and a discussion later would have been better. Overloading a new driver with information - without dual controls - is irresponsible and further distracts them from the road like if they were taking part in a phone call.
@@justanotherviewer4821 Sometimes a good telling off does the trick, especially with the hazard perception, and the thinking of “what if your brakes fail” it opens the mind to other thoughts then and there and then they will use that from that second on as a reaction of “oh sh*t, yeah he’s right”
Brings back memories of my own dad telling me off for going too fast and breaking too late!
This is the secret "How you deal with other people mistakes make the difference." lack of empathy is our problem on the road, Your are right Mr. Neal
11:36 - Why do people feel it necessary to immediately drift out to the middle lane? Really gets my goat, that.
Whenever i see 2 cars coming up a slip lane I just know the 2nd one is going to go straight into the middle lane. Muppets!
I mean for me it just crazy , use some common sense not to jump straight to middle lane it doesnt matter there are cars or not . You never know who can come very fast from back .
They do that because they are too stupid to think you cannot undertake. I wish everybody would do it for it would take a lot of time off my journey.
Learning to drive is only one part, the second part of driving is to understand the psychological aspects of road users.
Agreed. The second part is understanding that not everyone obeys the rules like they should
Also we need to understand that not everyone has the same ability/confidence to drive as we might have and I think that causes a lot of frustration and impatience from other drivers.
Learning to drive ??? Many instructors just teach pupils to pass the test. There is a big difference in knowing how to drive to pass your test, and how to drive on the roads "for real".
"second part of driving is to understand the psychological aspects of road users."
Which is a very easy and quick lesson.
They are all insane and incompetent.
Stick to that and you won't go far wrong.
I found that after a year of driving you can see the signs that someone is about to do something really stupid.
Almost like a sixth sense
You were one of those fucking idiots i hated on road
That driver getting angry at a lorry changing lanes needs to lay off the viagra
Nightmare!
It's more annoying the fact it's a bloody red light!
gixxerman69 me too, but that was bloody dangerous driving from the lorry driver especially in those conditions. However I would’ve let the idiot in.
What if it was a BMW instead of a lorry ??
Zulisian google maps on CarPlay can be absolutely piss poor at times. I’ve had it where it just flies off the road and lags for ages
It seems like a lot of collisions or problems could be avoided if every road user does proper checks for the current situation, and also be more calmer if others make mistakes. Even the best drivers will make mistakes sometimes. No point in getting angry about it!
Jarrod was so fixated on getting past the cyclist, I doubt he saw the near miss of the van in front and had one himself. Tunnel vision at its finest
Poor polo is a 69 plate too!! 😬😬 Worst nightmare!
surely with the dashcam evidence that should be resolved quickly and the other driver's insurance will pay out entirely?
New 69 polo hit. Worst nightmare getting hit in a nice new car. 😬
That was my polo, only 3 months old. It wasn’t a write off, they ended up repairing it but coz of COVID it all got delayed....
Thomas Davies I hope you weren’t too serious hurt. Do you know if there was any repercussions for the other driver ?
You and me both, mate.
The fast the road, the faster you die. Sounds like an Alan Partridge line but very true. Love it.
Sounds like a reason to go faster.
It won't be crushed if it is deemed repairable.
the pillar inbetween the doors was damaged and that means repairing a heap more. It is possible the chasis itself is bent out of shape.
From my non-expert eye, I'd guess it comes down to whether that floor/the chassis is damaged.
It got repaired wasn’t a write off and it was only 3 months old at the time of the accident
Been driving for years, but I always learn something from Ashley's videos.
I have this issue with my car and know for a fact my speedo is significantly off at higher speeds as when following it for 70 on the motorway im being overtaken by everything, and my dads car says hes doing 63 when following me at "70"
@@JamesA1, I don’t think they were learning, more newly qualified, or Dad was at fault for not coaching earlier.

Wise words.
Feel sorry for the owner of the polo beats, such a nice car.
Insurance must have went up like mad 😭
It is a great car tht was only 3 months old at the time of the accident. No change to insurance yet though, all repairs were sorted by the other persons insurance
@@thomasdavies442 was only saying as I've got the same car vw polo beats, same colour and same alloys. Hope it got sorted, lovely dub/vag car it is tbh. The amount of unexperienced drivers on road is crazy, even if you're safe, that doesn't mean others will be 😟
The polo gti+ is a spaceship
Big shout out to Jarrod's old man!
Clip 6 - yeah blind spot but no excuse for not moving your head and looking imo
Clip 11 - Blind spot or not the car is aware he was there, He saw him in that lane seconds earlier at the give way.
"How you deal with other people's mistakes which sets you apart". This is why I watch your chanel
"Some aspects of smart motorways leave a lot to be desired", that has to be the understatement of the year.
At 11:24 I tought that was a meteor for a second.
All the motoring organisations agree that So called Smart Motorways were the worst idea ever. Especially as they have caused several deaths.
I believe they are being phased out.
Glad there weren't any serious incidents here.
i like the speeding driver getting told off by his passenger for going too fast that was bloody good
Technically he wasn’t even speeding though.
I agree about clip 18 - if they're already oblivious and cutting you off you can be very sure they're going to do it again at the next opportunity.
Love your videos! Please keep doing this style. I really enjoyed it. Especially your voice over with your opinion on what went wrong. X
Thank you so much!!
Clip 15, Jarrod, be told lad, forward planning is the key 😉
9:08 for clip 13 is a common mistake. The driver pulling out is only seeing the car pulling in, which obscures the car behind it (the cam car). We need to be thinking about what traffic can hide. Could it hide a bike, motorcycle, or in a different scenario, a pedestrian (?).
Yeah, people wait for a hazard to clear, and then they feel they have the all clear to go, but really they should reassess the situation.
When you are taught to drive you should be taught if you think it's not safe, don't go.
If you can't be sure it's clear then, in that case don't go. Yes you might miss a gap, but you've also potentially saved a hell of a lot of insurance money.
That polo is such a nice car to be written off
Unbelievable! In all my driving (since 1989) I’ve had very little of this shit to deal with thankfully!
If you are approaching a single lane roundabout then stay in centre of lane and stop idiots trying to overtake.
I always go way slower when there's low sun I'm my eyes because you cant see aswell
You should also go slow if there is a low sun behind you because people won't be able to see you very well.
Most of these collisions happen a lot. Sometimes though it could get worse. So far, on my new longer trips I've not seen too much trouble.
You give way to whats on the roundabout not whats coming up to the roundabout"
i failed my hgv class 2 last week for this same reason apparently i caused the car to have to slow down :SSS

@10:47 the voice of reason for sure. Good chap!
That A2 roundabout, no one keeps in their own lane anyway. Everytime I'm on it, i get cut up 🤣
Roundabouts have to be my pet hate in the uk! People don’t understand what lane to be in, they don’t understand it’s give way to the right or traffic already on the roundabout, they can’t stay in their lane they take the race line, they fly onto the roundabout making it difficult for larger slower vehicles to safely join, they go flying past other vehicles giving that car ahead no room for an error, there’s so much more I could ramble on about 😂
Not using indicators on roundabouts is also a big issue.
gixxerman69 yeah nothing worse than giving way to someone for them to turn down the street you’ve just come from 🤦🏻♂️
And mini roundabouts, how many drivers don't even attempt to go around the circle painted on the road, even when it's an actual hump!
Round here roundabout priority is generally based on how German your car is
I loved the dad telling his son off 🤣🤣
The dressing down Jarrod got was so funny 🤣 my Dad used to give me the same ones when I was learning
That polo shouldn't be write off, its 2 doors and a rear quarter panel as long as no structural damage underneath. With how new the car is I camt see that being written off. Both those doors only cost 2 to 300 to fix each
Clip #10..when he realized he was going to be next to the lorry at the lights, he shit a brick, and went into the right hand lane
Thank you Ashley for helping me see things more clearly when driving. Please could you do a video on using slip roads
The Jared clip is the best in this compilation for me. Then clip 20 the view says to the car coming out of the parking space to watch what they are doing, and they are! They stopped! Some would say they were facing the wrong way, which is true, but they would probably only look over their shoulder less.
That lorry driver probably saved a accident from happening
12:55 who had the priority? the cam guy or the car merging from the right?
Not worth arguing with a truck, they know they will win.
don't know that the truck driver deliberately cut in, looks like a mistake to me. The camera cars reaction was dreadful.
Poor Polo..
I said I understand his frustration not that he was right
If you watch the clip even if the camera car had let the lorry in the lorry would have had to break and slow right down in the live lane to get across, in that instance I would have said that the lorry should have carried on to the next exit because having to do actions like that to get the exit means you’ve missed the exit
Cammer did what I would do 👍🏼
@@ashley_neal Thanks Ashley!
The lane grace between the 1st and 3rd lanes make this safe 👍🏼
@@ashley_neal Suggesting that the undertake by the white BMW was not safe? If this happened on a two lane carriageway, it would not be possible to leave a lane gap so you always run the risk of the car you're undertaking moving left at any time. That's why I tend to stay behind anybody I catch up on the outside lane until I can overtake safely on the right.
Cant imagine the mental state of someone sending in a clip where they're in the car honking the horn and swearing. What??
Probably 'ill expose this clip and everyone else will see what sorta idiot I have to deal with'
He’s probably sent it to every other dashcam channel on TH-cam and been slagged off in the comments in every last one of them so thought he’d try here instead so he could finally find someone who agrees with him… Nope!
I'm amazed the cyclist didn't appear look behind them once at 10:05, hearing a car come that close would be scary
Jareds dad and Ashley should have said something about overtaking over a solid white line.
Imagine if all bad drivers had someone like the Jared clip in the passenger seat. 😂
Crazy horn guy showed what a coward he was as he makes sure he's far over in the right lane and hidden by the van gotta love the car warriors
Dad and son I past my test 58 years ago and the one thing my dad told me is you never stop learning I still am
What is the best thing to do when being tailgated by an HGV? Saw one yesterday 5ft behind a small car which had nowhere to go. Slow down gradually then accelerate away? I’d be worried about the slowing down bit. Put hazards on? It is scary.
The pushbike rider in that clip was creating that situation for the benefit of his camera/himself.
5:02 is common practice in here :)). and worse than that is sometimes you stop on give way line for traffic inside roundabout and the drivers behind start honking and gesturing :/
I have at least 3 clips when someone about twice my age did this and was looking proudly in my eyes
5:12 that's a new car as well!!
At 12:22... was that Macclesfield at the Silk roundabout?
Clip 19 was locked on for both of them right?
Do people not do a simple check over the shoulder when changing lanes? Especially on a motorway when they have plenty of time to do so.
Clip 7 can relate blind spot on island 3 junctions are 30 limit and cars zoom over too fast
"but as a biker I am also an inconsiderate a$$hole who doesn't follow rules"
As a Learner, it scares me shitless watching these vids.... But I like to think I'm also learning possible situations and scenarios 🤔
Thanks so much 👍
I’ve been driving for over 10 years. I drive for a living, and I work on motorways. I’m still learning to drive.
@@PedroConejo1939 Wise words.... Thanks Pedro 👍
@@midlandsdriver9667 Wow... you've been driving for 10 years, drive for a living (i.e. driving regularly), AND you even say you work on the motorways... yet you're big enough to say you're still learning!!!
I salute you! 👏👏👍👍👍
@@midlandsdriver9667 very good mindset 👍
Ashley, I've had a look through your videos and I haven't seen anything which relates to it... Could you make a video detailing what to do in an accident? Such as swapping details, taking photos, etc. It'd be very handy because it's not something a lot of people think about, especially those who have never been in an accident.
Did the cycle have an audible warning device ie a bell ?
Clip 15 the passenger said everything for you Ashley. Lol.
