8:31 "its staggering how many times you can get to a temporary set of lights" yes it is ashley 100% agree with you
i thought my headphone amp broke when it just cut out like that lol.
XD
It is staggering how you can get to a temporary set of lights...
😂😂😂 I was just going to write the same thing
Same here... it's usually silky smooth Ashley, but the temporary lights clip was cut short..
I had to rewind that, I thought it was a glitch on my computer.
Ain't that the truth
I'm going to say that line every time I come across some roadworks now.
Beeping someone for turning right from a right turn only lane.... That's wild.
@András Torma People apparently expect you to cause a crash just so that they can save 5 seconds of waiting behind you.
The driver behind is not in a position to see the right turn arrow painted on the road, your only supposed to pass on the left when a drivers giving a right turn signal, drivers arn't always aware its a right turn lane only because cars are on the road markings.
@@marklittler784 This person positions left early making me think they're a local or otherwise knowledgeable in the area.
You also give learners space and allow for mistakes. Not seeing the arrows you shouldn't be passing on the left, especially with a learner. They could have made a mistake and then decide to move left without indicating in an attempt to fix it on realising in the situation where it isn't a right turn lane.
There's a number of times I have beeped at a full licence holder where I wouldn't dream of doing so when it's a learner, I'm in Northern Ireland though where it's mandatory for new drivers to display 'R' plates for 'Restricted' (to 45 mph on all roads with 50+ limits) for their first year, although, they passed their test, so shouldn't exactly be hesitant anywhere.
@@markwright3161 You need to blast your horn because you've not been reassured by the learner giving a right turn signal, they shouldn't be on a main road if they don't know when to signal or how to especially when they're a learner that driver was a learnatic.
Typical shitty Peterborough drivers
Motorcycle clothing rule: don't dress for riding, dress for coming off.
Dress to slide, not to ride. 👍
he was dressed so the ambulance crew can easily see his injuries when he crashes
Don't dress for the ride, dress for the slide!
Soooo true
Another reason to wear high viz....for when you come off
Clip 11:
The learner is in a marked right-turn lane, the guy hooting at him seems incapable of realising that. :-(
I can't believe how many vehicles went through the red light at the pedestrian crossing, a bit like follow my leader.
I have no problem if it is completely clear and safe to do so. The US has turn right on red.
@@jamescaley9942 Not in the UK. Going through a red light is always an offence even if clear.
One time I was at a set of lights and mine turned green. Just as I had started going, a car went through a red light, and about 10 other cars followed them through. I was just sat their in awe that so many people didn’t notice their lights were red! I kept checking my lights so see if it was my fault, but it definitely wasn’t.
A wee bit of extra excitement for me watching the Glasgow clips. Anniesland has a notorious layout.
The electric bike was travelling at 29 kph (18mph) in what was effectively a pedestrianised shopping area - seems a bit rapid to me.
agreed, i don’t think the cyclists turning left were in the wrong here. you can’t really spot an ebike from far away and i wouldn’t be anticipating that kind of speed in such a street as a cyclist or pedestrian
Merge in turn is great. I've only seen one road near Belfast that signposted it, but it worked perfectly.
The road's now upgraded fully to four lanes or dual carriage way, but it was nice to have the sign when it used to squeeze down to two lanes.
9:32 is incredibly obnoxious.
Cammer moves to the left, accelerates unnecessarily harshly and undertakes. Do they really not expect any other car ahead of them to do the exact same thing? Is it really worthy of a beep of the horn for that?
Cammer moves at 9:34; other car moves at 9:35. That's roughly one second difference in timing, and not enough time to react. If you're going to make such quick maneuvers you should EXPECT other drivers to not realise you're there for a second or two. I could easily see myself being the driver of the car that was beeped at in this clip, and I wouldn't think I'd done anything wrong. Fortunately this has not happened to me yet, though.
Sure, if I was the cammer, I'd take the same route; but I would not be accelerating so harshly and I would be looking out for, and giving way to, (and not beeping!!) anyone who wants to do the same maneuver ahead, especially if it's only a second or two after I've moved.
3:52 the "winner" is the one that swallows their pride and backs off.
The mini is on the wrong
@@nathan9048 How do you work that one out? The corsa appears to move out to block people overtaking (because of the merge). It's something you see lorry drivers do a lot when there's a merge. If everyone just merged alternately when they get to the bollards instead of one person deciding they know whatr's best for everyone, traffic would run much more smoothly.
To me the corsa looks like it's trying to merge into the lane that's being cut out (can't think of the technical term)
IMO, the driver of the Mini should have accepted the fact that the Corsa driver wasn't going to let them in much sooner and just dropped in behind.
Hi Ashley. Some great clips. Thank you for featuring Canterbury on one of your clips. I know Canterbury pretty well and I use Canterbury test centre
I've done something similar to that last clip while cycling in the rain - I didn't spot the car in front stop at a pedestrian crossing and then looked down at my gears. By the time I clocked that the car had stopped, I was too close and going too fast. Both wheels locked up and I slid on the wet road into the back of the vehicle.
Ironically, it was a driving school car. The instructor was driving alone, and asked if I was ok before moving on. A lesson in anticipation was learned that day.
3:50
This is in Keighley, West Yorkshire and I was in this queue a lot. It was a big source of local debate on the community Facebook page where a lot of people were agonising over people "pushing in" and "jumping the queue". The road goes from 2 lanes to 1 about 1km away from where the roundabout is at the end and at peak time, queues were very long. People would "rush down" the outside lane to "push in" and some locals didn't like it. Some truck drivers would block the lane and stop anybody from getting ahead, some would do what is seen in this video etc. I rang several companies about their drivers blocking lanes because it is selfish and moronic to do this. The roadworks are finished now and luckily queues have decreased massively. It seems like people in our town love queueing and hate those who try to use all available road space.
Shout out to the guy submitting clips from around Glasgow! Those lights at Anniesland Cross seem to cause a lot of bother for folk..
3:19 Here in New Zealand we have lots of signs that say MERGE LIKE A ZIP whan entering a motorway or when two lanes become one.
When I was training for my motorcycle licence I was always told that if I had to look at my instruments or controls (the controls should not need looking after a while but for a learner that is not used to the layout of controls it may require a look) then it should be only a quick, split second glance and at a safe time. Always keep your main focus on the road ahead at all times.
That last clip to me seemed like he only just passed his cbt. The panic grab of the front brake and in turn locked up the front wheel causing it to slide also dont be a squid, your hand wouldnt hurt half as much if you were wearing gloves
I recently had a go at a friend's son who bought a scooter and a helmet and thought that he was done. Funnily enough what got through to him was asking how he would feel about his mum wiping his arse after his gloveless hands were messed up.
@@littlebluepanda394 road rash is probably the worse type of pain. I had a crash at 50-60mph on gravel and my gloves got torn apart but no broken bones or anything due to wearing the right gear and the thing that hit the floor first was my face XD and I have never got so close to stones before that night. It amazes me when people say its only 30mph it wont be that bad if you slide. Asphalt and skin really dont go together especially if its a hot day out 🔥
@@jeebus6675 People who say that must forget the kind of grazes you can get from falling over running in a school playground. Doubt I was running much faster than 10mph as a young kid
Looks like he was trying to turn his indicator off to me
@@jeebus6675 People should really take a close look at the road surface, before they do it involuntarily. Might feel lovely and smooth when driving/riding on it but you could grate cheese on that stuff, although it wouldn't be particularly appetising afterwards.
10:10 Feels good to hear someone say that. Really don't understand why people can't grasp that concept. I've done it plenty of times with no issues. I'll even admit I've done it when I've used bad judgement and would be blocking the roundabout if I was still trying to get off it
8:06 the electric bike is doing 20mph. Past people who are walking! And the cyclist crossing wouldn’t have expected a bike to be going that fast. I’m all for electric bikes but they need to be ridden a bit more carefully.
15mph
Middle lane hogging: show them to use the left hand lane...and look behind to see you’ve been ignored.
Merge in turn: one driver forcing their way in when there tends to be plenty of space behind.
Well for merging, I couldn't really see who was where in front, but you're supposed to do it like a zipper, one from left, one from right, left, right,...
It actually is obligatory in my country. You have to zip. Also on a roundabout when there's too much traffic, to keep it flowing from both sides.
So I kinda understand them for not wanting to lose their spot, it's wrong, don't know who's spot it was though.
They were also moving so slowly that nobody was gonna get hurt, maybe a paint scratch if they're really both persistent.
The best all round UK driving related channel on TH-cam.
8:36 what happened to the audio?
My guess is music started and got picked up and auto muted.
Thought my speakers died.
@@michaelsteffensen6844 same, but I rewinded the video 10 seconds to see
I think the likelihood is an error in the edit/export. It sounded like ash was about to make a point, then his voice was cut off along with all audio and then it moved quickly onto the next clip
The learner in the black fiesta was literally me (cut up on the roundabout), was from my older brothers dash cam , did not expect to see this 😂

Passed my test on a bike 4 days after my 17th birthday... (many many years ago :) ... Riding in tee shirts and god forbid shorts... Absolutely makes my skin crawl !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That first clip is in Canterbury in Kent, it’s where I live, and yes there are a lot of people that ride scooters in the road.
8:20
that bicycle was driving in a ''pedestrian'' zone. yes you are allowed to ride there, but not at the speed which he was going.
he was hitting 30kph on his electric bicyle, while 15 kph max is allowed in these type of zones.
so his speed was the first problem. had he not been ''speeding'' there would have been no ''suudden'' issue. becuase other people riding there dont expect anyone to drive that fast.
I'm not familiar with these roads but I did think he was going awfully fast. It was clear that the other users going in his direction were at about 15-20kmph (judging on the speeds he was at behind and overtaking other cyclists), and as you say he was doing close to 30 for most of the clip.
Re: that corsa clip. I lived in Leeds (though the clips are just outside Bradford) for 15 years before moving back NW and loads of West Yorkshire drivers are super angry and aggressive on the roads. I don't blame them. Leeds has 60s transport system with 2020s traffic levels and no investment to remedy it other than telling people to ride bicycles on roads full of furious motorists.
Clip 1. Scooters are ridden more like Skateboards. Here to stay? maybe better get used to them.
Clip 6. Compulsory merge in turn? it would clear thing's up in writing, but it's more to do with attitudes and sharing the roads, it helps to stop them getting clogged up.
Clip 11. Clearly turning right no need for a signal it should have made no difference to the cammer. No need for horn to chastise. just sad really.
Clip 18. The kia was locked on to the back of the Sainsbury van. Definitely guttered the offside front wheel. Test drive would have been more like tested to destruction if that truck had caught it.
Clip 20. Messing with knobs and buttons while Riding/driving can prove disastrous. Learn where they all are so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
Thanks for uploading. 👍
I'll be honest. As much as I understand folk don't like them, I don't see how scooters are ant different to a bike
The scooter overtook right-side across a roundabout. It's one thing factoring in new risks, but another expecting drivers to have eyes everywhere, to the point of over-vigilance. E-Bikes and scooters need to be licensed, so the riders can learn the hard way via fines and bans.
0:16 is Canterbury around St Dustans gate and that is a brutal stretch of road. I honestly dont even know why but there is always a problem on it
First few clips are in anniesland, Glasgow. Near me. Always funny to see somewhere you know. Happens at all these lights
2:12 - One other thing to note there, is that the timing between the pedestrian lights going red at the closest junction, and the lights going green at the further junction is around that which you'd normally expect for your 'own' lights, if that makes sense?
A lot of drivers take clues from pedestrian signals that they can see, I'm not saying it's right at all, because it isn't, but that may also have been a contributing factor to the light jump.
I feel that the ped lights may actively be set to change to red sooner than they 'need' to be for the very reason of people jumping the lights here? Only a hypothesis, mind!
07:00 - my driving instructor told me that when a car is already in a one-directional turning lane - such as this for turning right only - using indicators isn't required
Someone must of shat in his cornflakes that morning
I would of indicated but definitely no need to beep a learner, what a prick
Yeah, no point indicating since you literally can't do anywhere else.
I live in Sweden and I just graduated truck driving school where we were forced to take a 24 meter truck on every roundabout the we could find. It was scary at first however I completely understand how to safely navigate a roundabout under any circumstances now
I'm confused by the merge and turn one. Does the white car think it absolutely needs to squeeze in among the three vehicles to its right when there's a perfectly good space behind or is there something wrong with that space that I am not aware of?
Anybody planning to implement a Smart Motorway should take the following test. If they refuse then the scheme does not go ahead.
They must go out in their car, on an existing Smart Motorway, at night, rush hour traffic, in rain, and with their family on board and simulate a breakdown. Seems fair to me.
2:30 This junction is confusing because the secondary light is placed after the pedestrian crossing, and not at the other side of the junction. Were there to be such a secondary light it would be in the same view as the far junction light, so prevent drivers being confused.
7:05 It's 50+ years since my driving lessons (10, followed by my test in Cambridge), but I still remember my instructor telling me that it was not necessary to indicate to turn right from a right turn lane. I might do so when approaching the lane so as to give inform following cars it is safe to pass on my left.
8:00ff That looks like Woerden - west of Utrecht. The Dutch expect bicycles to make sharp changes of direction like that. There is an interesting channel "Not Just Bikes" where a Canadian compares and contrasts his experience of roads in Canada and Netherlands. It is interesting to observe that Dutch cyclists observe traffic lights.
11:33 I would recommend Crowtree leathers, except they are no more. No more road-rash. Linda Baumber did the fitting, and the legs were made tight to allow for subsequent leather stretching. She got me to put them on, wriggling my legs to a snug fit. Then she pulled the jeans down, and my underpants came with them. "Ah! That usually happens!" she cried. RIP Alec Baumber - leather constructor extraordinaire.
2:30 is definitely bad road design. Depending on the car and your seat position, both correct lights can easily blocked by your roof leading you to look at the next set of lights, especially because, for some reason, there aren't additional lights at head level for the first car.
Clip 15 is Birmingham. Highgate. I have used this junction many times to turn right. Can get tight with the no.50 coming at you but generally ok. There is a big road to the left which is often used for racing. Looks like he was warming up.
Is that the Hardwick roundabout at King's Lynn? AKA Swaffham stock car raceway at certain times!
It seems that clip. 17 9:25 has a lot wrong with it, yes the bmw should be double checking their mirrors but the driver of the clip also has the mind set of space so I’m going to accelerate into it
#5 That guy is allowed to always drive in the middle lane - he's a paid-up member of the Centre Lane Owners' Group - C.L.O.G.
Woah Canterbury! That was the day I moved out. The electric scooters were a nightmare. Some students would use them in the library and have fights by throwing books at each other while flying along on scooters. Crazy!
They a few months later had the first electric scooter test in the town Canterbury, started in November 2020
Last lad is the sorta person that only wears a helmet because the have to by law.
I’ve just emailed Deliveroo about their riders and told them to Google de-gloved hand and show it to their riders who don’t wear gloves. Idiots.
You gremlins are amazing to me. What concern is it of yours if someone else doesn't want to wear safety gear you personally think is prudent.
@@WreckItRolfe That's your fault for living in an oppressive dystopia, not theirs.
By this logic then we should all be locked in cubicles and fed apportioned "healthy" gruel while being shuttled from a workstation to a sleeping station from birth till death.
That might be appealing to you but not to most.
@@jimmehjiimmeehh9748 But surely it’s common sense to want to wear something that would protect you or save your life in the event of an accident. It’s not cool to be injured. Just seems backward to not want too. It’s not the fact they don’t want to, it’s because they feel they’re being told to do it, so they’re automatically against it.
Not nice for other people to have to witness the aftermath either just because some people cannot be told.
@@sinista.productions Assuming you aren't riding in order to expose yourself to risk, which some people do, then it is common sense to want to wear something that gives you greater protection ASSUMING that it only gives you greater protection. But protective gear doesn't only protect you, it is also uncomfortable and impractical and (if you care about that kind of thing) ugly.
So if you're someone who likes to ride because you like the feeling of the wind chill on your skin you're going to lose that with a leather jacket, (for example). Or if you're riding on a hot day, wearing no protection you stay cool, wearing protection you die of heat stroke anyway, etc.
As for "it's not nice for people to have to witness the aftermath". It's not nice for me to have to deal with the... I can't even use the correct word because it'll make google eat this post... Let's say the products of failed parenting and leave it at that.
Half of life is being exposed to things you'd rather not be.
That merge in turn clip was in Keighley. I had someone being the lane police to me there because i was using the right lane, as it was empty. Luckily i was traveling at a slow enough speed to emergency stop when the pulled out, blocking the lane.
Regarding the scooter clip I probably would have had a go at him but that wouldn't help at all. What else can you do with uninsured illegal scooter riders except call the police? That would take more time than it's worth. 8:32 Is he really going to risk his licence for a few minutes?
I wouldn't be under the impression that a scooter would require insurance anymore then a bike. If you're a car involved in an accident you should stop and swap details, that is the law
You still have to exchange details to be legal and as much as it irks folk you as the insured have a legal obligation to disclose any accident to your insurance company, regardless of if a claim is made. So having exchanged details, at least you've got something to give them.
Equally, you may have just injured someone, again you have a legal requirement to stop.
If your talking about the scooter at the end... I can tell you he's not illegal, just wasn't paying attention, if your talking about the time stamp you made... That's not a scooter lol
I'm also confused about the last clip. What controls was the rider fiddling with . Aren't motorbikes and similar vehicles designed so that you don't need to look down at the handlebars when you are riding along. And couldn't the rider hear that the vehicle in front had stopped or paused?
Clip #11. Totally agree, a signal from the learner would have benefitted no one! It is fairly easy to anticipate that someone in a right only lane is going to turn right!
And then i saw clip #15 😂😂😂
6:07 That is an incredibly confusing junction. You could see how cars behind would have thought the video senders vehicle had parked, as you wouldn't be able to see the no stopping lines from behind that vehicle, but you would be able to see the massive amount of space. I don't think this is a big fail for the drivers, but more for whoever planned that road layout! People can't see through sheet metal!
I was a little confused myself. It wasn't until they started driving forward I could see it narrows. They obviously know that road but a lot of people don't.
While I agree the stop line is a huge distance from the crossing, it's all residential in that area with local shops on the left. The first silver car actually parked on their driveway later on down the road so they at least know the crossing is there. It's just a notorious crossing, for what ever reason people hate giving way at it or drive right up to the crossing with pedestrians on it.
You can see the crossing and lights even if you're a few cars behind, what you won't see is any pedestrians on the left, but then they should probably try and have a look rather than just passing if someones stopped there.
Also - www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.0059983,-0.7497427,89m/data=!3m1!1e3 shows the location of the crossing. As you can see theres wavy white lines immediately after the junction, meaning the only place to stop is where I did by the narrowing sign
Tad confusing because it is a give way but the junction on the left also has a give way.
I wonder if it'd have been correct to have pulled up past the junction to the zebra and waited there. There seemed to be space without blocking the junction
Don't understand why they remained stopped after giving way to the red car. Nobody else approaching, no pedestrians on the crossing they should have carried on. Don't see it as they were doing the correct thing at all. Not sure what you mean by no stopping lines. Pity there's no GPS so can't get a better view on StreetView.
@@andyalder7910 What do you mean? Theres pedestrians about to cross on the left. With that distance you either floor it to beat them or you stop right on the crossing as they cross. I'd rather hang back thanks and give them the space to cross
Clip 12
Glasgow St George's Cross, know the junction well.
Appropriate the van waiting on the wrong side was labelled Scottish tubes😄
Clip #9 is doubly impressive with how well the viewer reacted when you consider they’re watching Sky Sports at the same time.
I passed my test for the 2nd time back in 2005 so I’ve been driving for a fare while and I just wanted to say I find this to be great content and keeps me posted in information 👍
People on electric scooters riding on the roads with absolutely no road knowledge whatsoever. It's a recipe for disaster. The one guy that was hit was totally in the wrong and imo should be paying for the damage he caused to the mercedes but of course the scooter riders have no insurance so they have zero responsibility for anything they do on the roads. Yet another example of cyclists not having the foggiest idea of the rules of the road at 10:38
The electric scooter rider brought that collision on himself, by going on the wrong side of the roundabout, and overtaking a turning vehicle.
While I don't wish anyone to be hurt, I'd have been happy to see the scooter get crushed under the cars wheels.
The moped rider was looking down for the indicator button to cancel his indicator but i would never dream of riding my bike without any sort of protective gear because it bloody well hurts 🤣
First saw "Filter in Turn" signage in Jersey, Channel Isles. Seemed to work really well and most drivers understood it. It would save a lot of aggro here.
9:30 Getting furious at someone for doing the same thing you've just done.
Exactly
I have to admit I use to get annoyed when people did silly things on road but I learnt to rise above it no need to get angry and beep your horn constantly it just makes you mad and spoil your day, I just laugh it off now, lifes too short to be angry and I learnt the hard way, stress. Only time I beep my horn is a warning really its rare I do. I am always careful at lights and roundabouts particularly roundabouts because people often just pull up in front of you when your half way around a small roundabout so I tend to approach them and slow down even when I know its clear on my rhs. I been driving since late 70's and was taught to treat everyone as idiots and so far thats stood my in good stead. I am not a perfect driver I have on rare occasions made a mistake
I agree about the horn and anger.
Its all about having a good attitude. People make mistakes, it happens. None of us are perfect.
Personally I have to actively decide to use my horn these days. I see it as a potential distraction. If someone is already doing something stupid and I beep at them, it'll only take what small attention they apparently have away from what they're doing.
Also, it's a distraction from me who may be better trying to control the vehicle with both hands rather than using one of them to punch the steering wheel.
I just think to myself karma will get to them if they are deliberately driving in the wrong. You can also report these drivers to the police online and they are taking action on it. I'll be honest after 5 years driving now I don't get as angry now.
@@L5GUK I agree give people time also if they take a wrong turn and yes I have done that I rather drive 5 miles down the road to get back on track or go back around the roundabout to get back in right lane
Clip 3 - am i right in thinking that big stadium thing is the site of the big mass vax site for that area?
6:55 Why would the learner even need to signal to be going into that lane anyway? You can't get past them until they've entered that lane, unless cars can pass through each other now?
In olden days, folk were taught "mirror - signal - manoeuvre" so some seem to think that indicatiing is complusory.
@@derekp2674 I'm 100% sure these people also don't indicate if they're on a priority road that does a turn but stay on it. Because you've got to indicate that as well :P
Say, the priority road does a left/right hand turn, but has a 'give way road(?)' enter that road. You'd have to indicate left or right even if you're staying on the priority road. :D
The standard of driving is getting worse these days, Too many people have no patience to allow cars to merge and don't understand how merge in turn works, both lanes need to be used right up to the single lane point, (Zip merging ), Also drivers that use a particular road a lot know the signal timings and know that they are pretty safe to go even though it's illegal, Also a lack of active policing units on the roads has dropped so much in the last few years drivers know the chance of getting caught are slim now. great channel you have here Ashley, keep up the great content.
Ashley I admire your faith with regard to "merge in turn" being compulsory! I don't think making it compulsory would do any good, unless of course it were possible to enforce! If people are going to ignore something which is currently courtesy, they certainly won't pay any attention to it if it's compulsory.
I had to Google 'puffin crossing' to find out how it differs from a pelican!. And I can't think of a more ironic name that 'smart' motorway; anything but smart IMHO.
OMG @ 8:30 - and here I sit and wait patiently at temp traffic lights when on my cycle! (But I do frequently ignore 'road closed ahead' signs, but remain prepared to get off and walk my cycle past the obstruction, if necessary)
Probably a better idea to get rid of merge and turn. Have properly sized roads. We seem to make our roads even smaller. Everytime I see a tiny width road with hedges or grass verges using up valuable road space.
That comment about people not understanding roundabouts rung true with me as by me there is a roundabout where every entrence and exit has 2 lanes. Now I was in the left lane to go exit 2 left lane (straight over into the left lane), and the guy was in the right lane to go exit 1 right lane (left into right lane) not only that but not indicating. Luckily I was observant and ended up having to do e emergency stop and stalling it on a roundabout
Its not just multi lane roundabouts that people can't seem to be able to deal with, but multi lanes in general. Not a week goes by where I don't witness a near miss on my commute to work via Switch Island.
Back when I was a kid I remember my Dad wasn't happy about people cutting in line when they were merging in turn. I don't know if merge in turn didn't exist then but the road signs didn't help (even now they could use some improvement). From way back they'll say 'get in lane' and depict how far ahead a lane would close. What they neglected to say was 'use both lanes' and 'merge in turn'. I have seen 'use both lanes' recently but I wish they'd add the instruction to merge in turn because some drivers don't know that's how it should be done now.
People should queue right up to the narrowing point, then merge one for one. But with the general stupidity, lack of common factor that is unlikely ever to happen.
Great clips as always. Ashley clip #14 seems to cut out part way through?
5:25 great to hear the f1 commentary
All I heard was
🅱️ottas
Clips 3 and 4 I believe were genuine mistakes by both the van and car drivers, not concentrating and just didn't see their appropriate lights on red!
Which is exactly why I ALWAYS check all other traffic has stopped at a junction and not crossing their red lights when going through a green traffic light!
NEVER assume just because your light is green, that it is safe to cross.
There are many reasons a vehicle could go through a red light, including emergency vehicles, a genuine mistake, a rogue vehicle being chased by police, a drunk driver or someone just distracted!
We've all been at a junction and seen an example like clip no 4 where their light change might be staggered or the junction is just not clearly designed, if you're local and use that junction everyday, you'll understand these little quirks better but someone from out of town might not realise!
Always be aware of this, one little nugget I took from my driving instructor, who was a police instructor.😎👍
With regards the learner car signal, had I been behind I would have wondered whether it was in the wrong lane to go straight on or if it was in the correct land without the signal. So yes, I would have been a little put off. Though I agree there was no need for swearing and beeping angrily. Just a "someone forgot to signal or is a little distracted" situation.
8:44, there were two fails in that clip : the red car coming from the left whizzing past the intersection as the cammer's lights were switching to green? Don't tell me you didn't see that one Ashley :-)
You need to have a go at your mate John, as clip 19 is cut short. He was clearly going to cut that roundabout. Naughty, naughty.
Not by much.😊 Its a fair cop. Nobody's perfect.
Brilliant advice all the way through but even more so the last one for motorcyclists. Any chance you can do a video on motorcycle riding advice from your point of view?
Clip 3, I think it's a combination of not looking far enough ahead and then at the point they would have looked to see the lights they were looking in their mirror for making the lane change. Maybe they're unfamiliar with the area and more focused on getting to their destination than concentrating on whether or not they're reaching another set of lights. They could have been looking at the sign they pass at 1:56 then switched to looking in their mirror when they didn't want to go towards the M8 and completely missed the lights.
Scary situation, a lot of unfortunate timing, fortunately no more serious incident resulted, avoidable with 'advanced' training, but I think a standard of driving that could relatively easily pass the current test, with the exception of running the light obviously. Taking the red light out of the picture, (and assume they were finding their way) they read the sign correctly, made the change of direction with the info correctly, checked their mirror, indicated, moved across, continued to drive at an appropriate speed. The indicator cancelled a bit early, but other than that it wasn't bad driving, again, excluding running the red.
I've accidentally done the same as clip 4 (Anniesland Cross in Glasgow)
I sometimes get caught out too, but thankfully I have my instructor with me. I dread the day I have to navigate anniesland cross on my own. So easy to take the wrong turn. Especially if you follow signs for city centre and you almost go into the oncoming traffic bit.
Even the same location?
@@tanyapavlova4758 that almost caught me out one night too. They really should put a 'keep left' arrow on that island 😐
Clip #2 happened to me on a A road doing 50mph in a learner car only it was a big 18 wheeler, lucky for me I had watched a few of these type of dash cam videos on TH-cam to make me aware of what can and could happen. Scary you bet ya,but staying calm and composed is the best way
Clip 17 got a laugh here!!! I think some footage of you in the wife’s car needed 😂
10:51 for thumbnail Crash 🤣🤣👍👍
He's living the true supermoto life, skipping the lights xD
Clip 18# Maybe not enough arrows on the roundabout, clear well positioned signs mean less accidents, that right turn arrow on the road was well worn down.
"People don't look left properly when doing left turns".
I used to drive buses, and one route went past a sports centre/swimming baths. Every day there were cars parked opposite the entrance to that sports centres car park. Passing these parked cars required moving into the oncoming lane when it was clear, only to have some muppet emerge from the car park without looking and drive head on against a bus...
That first clip is in Canterbury in Kent. Here the council has introduced electric scooters as legal and you rent them while you use them sort of thing. So these ones should be insured and everything correct
Don't they usually have some kind of visible branding etc in that case? These could be privately owned ones with no insurance etc.
They have them in liverpool now , bright orange to distinguish them . It's a joke that hired ones are legal but private ones aren't .
I watched the first one 3 times then it suddenly dawned on me where it was, I thought so!! Use that round about on a weekly basis!
The learner turning right without a signal , there was a dedicated right turn lane ,so no signal req`d?
Glad it’s not just me that sees numpties many times on our roads, I must have been driving too many years (23yrs) , I sometimes press horn when absolutely necessary but try to sit back let them get on with it and take a deep breath and think good grief what are they doing 🙈
9:37 lol!!! 😂😂
2:30 notice how close to the stop line they inch toward. Probably put the closer lights out of their view and then when they saw the distant lights go to green their conditioning kicked in. Driving on autopilot.
My worst experience was being tailgated by a motorcycle and then overtaken on passenger side by the bike going up and around on the pavement, there were pedestrians walking in both directions fairly close by too.
making merge in turn compulsory makes sense to people like you and I, but in reality, driving on the left when not overtaking IS compulsory but we see many flouting the rule. Much like people not using both lanes before the merge, it's incredible how many people don't use both lanes
Recognized that first clip as Canterbury. They were council-sponsored those scooters and a scourge for the few years they existed until the council realised the whole thing was a bad idea.
If the scooter had followed the car AROUND the roundabout rather than over it, there wouldn’t have been a problem…
Clip one is also why (although, frustratingly not illegal, as I think it should be) it's ill advised to u-turn at a mini roundabout. There is, however, a rule that says that all vehicles must go around, and not over, the central markings. Unless you're in an oversized vehicle and you can't, which means you shouldn't.
So, basically, if you can't clear the mini roundabout without going over the central markings, you can't u-turn. Which, let's be honest, at a proper mini-mini roundabout is pretty much all vehicles. So, it isn't nominally illegal, but most of the time it practically is.
Ironically, this means that the scooters would be able to perform a u-turn at that roundabout, if they were allowed on the road in the first place.
Ironically after watching this in my lunchbreak I smashed my forklift into another one which was parked. Careless looney tune that I am.
if you have the clip send it in jk
One thing that amazes me is that we can have multiple sets of traffic lights that generate total confusion as to what they apply to.
In the case of lights that control the nearest junction it is incumbent on the road designers to make traffic lights visible from the driving seat. Too many times, when at the front of the queue they are not visible from even the driving seat of 'normal' cars without contorting forwards or sideways, they're OK for following drivers but not the one at the front. All it needs is a small set at eye level on the traffic light post as they have sur le continent.
Where traffic fights control various turning priorities the set of lights should have arrows on the red and amber lights and not just on the green. There is no reason why this could not be implemented and would make the traffic flow much clearer.
clip at 10:17 is at a roundabout close to a uni and its oh so problematic when its a very very simple round about
I believe merge in turn is compulsory in Jersey
That first clip is in Canterbury, I'm sure I almost had an accident with those lads the other day crossing the road near a junction without looking. Luckily I assumed they were going to do it and slowed right down before hand.
Just a note on the electric scooters. I recently attended the wake of an old mate who had one and came off in town and head butted a wall. He was in a coma and on life support for week after that it was turned off because of brain death. He was not wearing any protective gear whatsoever. He should have known better he was 56 years old. Bikers mantra should always be. ATGATT ( All the gear all the time ) Even when it is hot. Drive and ride safe everyone.
Ashley I've said about a trillion times, the only way to sort out the merge in turn is to put signpost stating you MUST Merge in Turn.
Some roadworks in my town were recently signed with merge in turn signs , but still a big queue formed down one lane . I got beeped for going down the empty lane until I got to the taper to merge .
I don't agree with your comments on the 'Dutch bicycle clip'. There is a problem with electric cycles in that quite a large speed differential has been created between pedal power and electric motors. Just like at sea I think it would be safer to adopt the maxim 'power gives way to sail'. (and in the Netherlands ' bikes give way to pedestrians)
That last clip...
I've been riding motorcycles longer than I've been driving cars.
Its amazing how many people I see whizzing around on scooters in shorts and t-shirt.
I get that it's an easy vehicle to hop on and go (they are called twist-and-go, perhaps wrongly) but 30mph is still 30mph regardless of whether you're on a bicycle, a moped or motorcycle. Road rash doesn't care.
@Biking Bazil it was an example. Road rash doesn't care what you happened to fall off.
I ride bicycles, wear lycra and fly down hills over 40mph too. But that's the risk assessment you take.
There is no reason not to wear proper protective kit on a motorcycle or moped except laziness. Modern tech and materials resolve the heat and comfort issues of old.
