Don't burn down your house. Check your stored lipo batteries

- All of us have older lipo batteries in a box or in storage around the shop. When is the last time you checked its status? My buddy Jim mentioned emailed me about checking batteries as a PSA. I also noticed TH-cam Channel @Gazza4230 mentioned the same thing in a post. Check your batteries folks.. Takes less than 30min and will save your house and you planes......
I do this frequently! Great advice
Thanks! Its a very important topic to discuss.
Awesome video and truth
Great advice.
Its a good reminder to think about those batteries more often than we should.
Good advise. Always keep that voltage checker handy.
Nice info!!! It’s good to see short info videos on all the things related to flying and not just the flying itself👍🏻🇬🇧
Glad you liked it Dave..
Thanks for the hint! I'm new to the hobby and am learning quite a bit from you.
You are welcome. Appreciate the comment.
Good advice. I'd add getting some of the chest size Sentry Fire Proof safes to keep them in...fire proof only, NOT water proof. They can contain the fire from multiple lipo's. You'd have smoke residue to clean up, but you'll still have a house. Lipo bags will not contain a fire. Still, a huge key is doing what you're talking about...don't give them a reason to fail in the first place.
I have a small safe (about the size of a dorm fridge) that is used for storage. But, bottom line is if one of these cooks off, the whole house will be filled with smoke..😬
Good tip, especially if you have alot like your collection. I checked my lipos the other day like i do from time to time but sometimes life gets in the way and things get put off. Much to my surprise i had one battery, Gens Ace 2s drag pack that was put away fully charged, puffed up like a balloon but oddly still fully charged after a year, but stored in an Ammo box with other 6s lipos ready to go off like a bomb and my house with it. This experience made me rethink my lack of concern when dealing with Lipos, a rude wake up call but still have a house.
For sure. It really makes me think of a better storage solution. I'm going to re-vamp my long term storage option with some Fireproof containers like a safe or ammo box, or Bat Safe....
@@SteffenRC I have always used an Ammo box, be sure to remove 2/3 of the lid gasket, leave a bit to keep tension on the lid but still has an air gap or you truly will have a bomb if something bad happens, Lipos have brought down full size planes. Check out videos here on how well they protect. The Bat safe is the way to go but comes at a cost, but no matter what you use nothing 100%. You need to think to not only do i need safe storage solutions for Lipos but storage solutions for where you put the Ammo box or safe.
Thanks for the tips on the ammo cans.

FYI: The Bat-Safe is also a great way to store your batteries while in proper balanced and storage mode.
Appreciate the info.. Thanks for sharing.
A good hint - Thank you. 🏴☠
Nice video!
@@JamesMcDonald-ng8ey yep. Thanks for the idea.
I'm doomed if I buy that many batteries. Thanks for the important reminder.
My collection has slowly grown over a few years.... Its a problem..😂
I have a reminder on my phone. I check all my batteries once month
smart move.
Thanks :)
Personally, when the subject is lipo battery safety, my suggestion is always store all of them separately inside three or four small and sturd barbecue grill ("never put all the eggs inside one basket"), preferably outside the house, simply because it is something designed to contain fire and extreme heat, putting them really far from anything inflammable, and thus you probably can have more time to take action if something bad happens, or if there is nobody at home, maybe the fire will be contained by de barbecue grill, not destroying all the rest of the house. The main goal is to have at home what I call "extreme anti-fire safety places", where it is possible to safely store lipo batteries and all kinds of fuel that we have to to keep and store at home - I simply deal with the lipo battery as if they would get on fire 100% of the time, because it is necessary that just one battery get on fire to destroy everything.
I live in a climate that has extreme cold and heat, so storing outside isn't practical. Scary to think about it though. I have a fireproof safe to store most of the batteries. But even that will make a smokey mess throughout the house. Thanks for sharing your comments.
Yep, if they’re good and you won’t be using them for a while, balance charge them. If they’re bad, fully discharge them and dispose of them properly. Our Lowe’s has a bin for batteries. Don’t put them in the trash.
I didn't know Lowes had a battery bin. Thats great... Thanks.
I keep my batteries in a double-walled "Durham FM Approved 1012M-50 Welded 16 Gauge Steel Fire Safety Cabinet" that I keep just inside my garage door. I paid $500 for it in 2022 and now it's $700 at Amazon. They're expensive, but it's better than losing my house.
Thats impressive... I had access to one of those type of cabinets long ago when a buddies gun shop was closing. (stored primers and powder). I passed on it.. Dang it..
@ Amazon has a Chinese copy of my cabinet for $336..
