Having been a Mac hater my entire life, my first Mac was a M1 Mac Mini because I was shocked at how cheap it was, and when I used it I was blown away by how absurdly good it was to the point I made the full switch to Mac as my daily driver. I wish I could have a Mac be my only computer, but the lack of games means I have to keep my Windows gaming PC. After Alexis' account I think it's clear the gaming problem of macOS is the one thing preventing mass adoption, and it would probably be a good topic for a future video with Mac Address' take on the gaming on Mac situation even though LTT already did one.
Also, give Alexis a Steam Deck.

I get what you're saying. Bur a company like apple doesn't deserve my money (in my opinion ofc) with the way they greenwash their shit. Look how good we're doing. But they started the trend of removing Headphone Jack and power adapter. Not because it's more green, no because it means more $$$ in their bank account.
As someone who sells their old phones 8 never have a spare brick laying around. Because without the brick it nerfs your resale value. Without the box it's even worse.
And their repairability is the major thing i fall over.
Self service is a joke, married parts. And no way for your local phone store to fix your damn phone. Nahh mate this is what makes me hate apple.
And on a sidenote Samsung(anti root security, and anti non official rom bull) and OnePlus (serialized/married batteries to the Mobo). Companies limit the things you can do with your phone for a longer lifetime.
Pretty sure that keeping the phones in use for a longer time reduces ewaste.
And they are actively taking that opportunity away from us all.
Because we all know the last thing to go bad in your phone is the battery /s

    • @ids1024
      @ids1024 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Gaming is a factor limiting mass adoption, but it's not the main one. I don't think it's a major consideration for most users. The main factor is still the price. It looks like the cheapest (new) MacBook on Apple's website is still $999 USD. While my impression is that a huge percentage of computer sales these days are Windows laptops or Chromebooks that cost half or a quarter that.
It's probably worth spending more to get a better computer if you can (regardless of what it is), and may pay off in terms of longevity. But that isn't necessarily what the average consumer is doing.

At the time we bought our M1 mini, we only upgrade the ram to 16GB. Half the reason we bought it was my wife needed a computer, she was perviously a mac user, and this was the peak of the pc parts price gouging epidemic of a couple years ago; so it just made sense at the time. Would buy one again in a heartbeat for her use case if we needed to. I got a M1 Pro Macbook Pro myself since i tend to be more mobile oriented for general computing and i can conveniently share it with my wife. We both also use iPhones etc.

I purchased a base model M1 Mac Mini back when it was released as replacement for my Mid 2015 15" Macbook Pro, and I would agree with what was said in the video. For everyday web-browsing, video calls, etc. it worked flawlessly and was a huge upgrade from my Macbook Pro. But recently I've been doing more creative work, specifically photo-editing with Lightroom, graphic design with Canva and some video editing with Final Cut Pro. This workflow really started to slow the M1 Mac Mini down and show the limitations of the 8 gb of RAM. I decided to start using my Macbook Pro for the same workflow, and though importing, exporting and rendering all takes a little bit longer, it has felt like the computer is waaaayyy faster because of the 16 gb of RAM and 2 gb of dedicated VRAM. Most of the videos I watched about the M-series processors when they were released said that the 8 gb of RAM would feel like 16 gb of RAM, and that was just flat out wrong! But, luckily the M2 Pro is now in the Mac Mini, and once I'm able to sell my M1, I'll be upgrading and will probably get 32 gb of RAM just to future proof myself!

It's impressive the value proposition they offer, but the restrictions placed upon MacOS and its' inability to do what I want (e.g. Use external graphics cards for rendering out 3D scenes in path tracers, generally play recreational games, poor by contrast management of multiple monitors), holds it back substantially. It isn't intuitive to me, and I find a lot of the design decisions hurt my ability to just... Work.
Whilst Windows isn't great in a lot of aspects, it is a lot more flexible for me, and the freedom to install it on any hardware I want is good enough, whilst Linux is a little too... Needy with my time to make things work. I like my devices to actually feel like they're mine. If I want to use them unconventionally, I should be able to do that. Apple feels like that one car company that sends cease and desist letters if you paint the car a different colour.
It's also for that reason that I'll be moving away from the Ipad Pro next time I upgrade, whilst the pencil is nice, there are plenty of android options, and whilst they may not be quite as aesthetically pleasing, I know the pens work just as well, whilst also having a lot more options for my use-cases, including easily using them like a Cintiq if I so please. I'm a graphic design student and I did buy the cheap m2 mac mini. I'm using it for 10 days and I can say it was a good decision. First of all, I have money left to buy pretty good peripherals. I bought a pretty good qhd 27-inch Dell monitor. I also bought a good mechanical keyboard and a good mouse. Even when I collect all of them in the country I live in, it comes to two-thirds of the price of an m2 macbook air. Yes, it's weird not being able to carry it but using a big monitor is amazingly good. Using a screen larger than 4 times the Air's screen changed my whole workflow. The second great thing is speed. Apps and windows open so fast that it feels so natural. I can easily do all my graphic design work. Yes, 16 gb ram would be better, but even if I'm working on a very large file, I haven't seen any problems other than half-second stutters from time to time. It certainly does not prevent me from doing my work. As someone who plays a lot of games, I can say that if the game is on macos, you can play it quite well. I use cloud gaming for most games, but you can definitely play games like Civilization or Tomb Raider at 1440p full settings. Of course, it is not without problems, but I found the solution for all of them. First of all, the number of ports is not enough. I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse and the USB a ports are already full. But I knew this so I chose a monitor with a USB hub. Another problem is the lack of a webcam and microphone. As a cheap solution, I can use my phone as a webcam. Unfortunately, I can only use the microphone with a headset connected. Another problem is the 256 GB SSD. While it's enough for programs and a few games, it's not enough for my photos, backups, and work files. I am using a cheap 1 TB external hard drive as a solution. This little computer can do just about anything I want. Two more of my friends from school bought it and they loved it too. I definitely recommend this computer. Especially at this price.

Terrific video and explanations of the tradeoffs with new Macs. For me, the combination of M1/M2's memory combo drawbacks, lack of upgradability, and 64-bit-only apps with 10.15 Catalina and above really limit my ability to use modern Macs. I have a 2018 Mini with 10.14 Mojave and that works great for any non-gaming tasks like uni work and . But, since a huge chunk of my PC use is in games, I have a dedicated Win11 rig which is far better for that.
The 2011 iMac was the peak of Apple computers for me, an amazing 1440p display for the time (still holds up great today), every spec being upgradable (or multiplied in the case of storage drives) and very repairable, great BootCamp support, and terrific for gaming. I used it as my sole computer for games until 2019 when the GPU went kaput after 7 years of heavy use. A new GPU solved it, and it still works like new. I do think it is very competitive at the price but in the same way that consoles are competitive. They take a loss/less profit on the hardware because they know you will be buying more of their products in the future. In the longer term this can easily result in spending multiple top tier PC's worth on hardware and peripherals that aren't anywhere close to the price to performance than with the subsidized first unit you bought, if anything you will spend a lot more money for less performance in most workloads.

It makes me sad that the “less than 3% of Steam users” being on Mac is the deterrent being used to justify not developing for them. Mac users make up fewer Steam users because they’re underserved. The percentage would be much higher if studios actually put in the effort for them.

I am a master's student, and I need to do the assignment (a lot of writing), Zoom meetings, and do some data science things related to machine learning. Still, it blows my mind when I do training compared to my friend's beefy desktop. With the same script and data set, I could do it in seconds while he in minutes. My MacBook pro is not the new one. It is only MBP 14 m1 pro, and I do not regret buying it. Especially with an external monitor (a must if you like to do something on a desktop) or NVME with a thunderbolt case if you like video editing and don't have enough internal SSD.

i have a macbook pro m1 16 inch that I use for most work tasks since it's 16gigs of ram. I have a macbook air m2 that's a base model that I use for when I travel for work and most other things. My macbook pro almost always stays docked at my desk in my home office, but is nice that if I can't work in my office I can take it and still have the same power from somewhere else with a fairly large screen. The air base model has worked great for me for spreadsheets, word docs, web browser, email, etc. I haven't seen any significant performance issues for what I use it for and it's much more portable than my heavier bigger macbook pro. OneDrive auto unloads files from my local machine I haven't used in awhile, which keeps my storage managed even at the smaller 256 hard drive. The Air also handles using Playstation remote play pretty well when paired with a backbone controller as long as my internet connection is good where I'm trying to connect home from to play while I'm traveling.

I got the M1 base model.
For every day tasks, i.e. browsing, emails, its great. I even use it for learning Python.
The only thing one has to watch out for with the base model is to stay away from swap memory. So close your tabs/windows/apps once you dont need them anymore. And this device should last for a long time :)

Alexis using the macbook for playing PTCGO is such a vibe, she gets it lol I love this approach to the apple ecosystem cause I do feel it could help get a better sense of who the audience of these devices are for. I'm in the same boat, I want to play Resident Evil Village but I'm the same way.

My 10 year old Macbook Pro had 16 GB of ram and 512 GB of storage. I am shocked how that's not even the baseline standard of brand new desktop machines. The 8 GB/256 GB base hasn't moved in so long.

I use a Mac Mini M1 for work as a headless CI&CD agent. It builds, tests, signs and submits the apps we develop to both apple's and android's stores. It's cheap and reliable.

Just got this computer about a month ago. Pushed it to its outer limits with iTunes, Safari (watching LTT), War Thunder open in a small window ... it was fine, you could fry an egg on the logo, but fine. I removed two 4in fans from an old laptop cooling stand thingy and rested them on top.

Sadly, The way Macs are being marketed and made, it's not suppose to be for gaming. Only for creating/production stuff. So no matter what, you either have to get a gaming console or PC to balance it but at that point, may as well just get a beefed up PC that can do both.

The even crazier thing is that this is currently ALREADY $50 off on Amazon. $549 for this performance is just an absolute no brainer.
I have a PC gaming setup at my desk and bought one at that price simply to have a second machine there to use Mac only apps I like to use on my MacBook Pro.

I bought the M1 Mac Mini (16GB, 512GB) just when it launched 2020 because a I needed a new computer so badly - I was not based and had no expectations to it. My main tasks were/are basic Office stuff like: Word, Excel, E-mail, browsing the web (often with multiple tabs open) and light photo/video editing and using Apple Music. After a while (in early 2021) I upgraded to a Benq 4K monitor and Bose computer speakers. All I can say, after 2,5 years I‘m still in love with this machine. It never let me down, still is blazing fast, power consumption is ridiculously low (yeah, that‘s also what counts nowadays). The M2 might be just an evolutionary update, but I think it makes everything a bit better. All I can say: Don‘t buy below 16GB RAM and 1TB of memory in 2023 and you will be happy for years when having my kind of work load and need a reliable computer.

I've had an M1 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM for over a year now. No hiccups as long I keep plenty for room free on the internal SSD for memory swapping. But I HATE the seconds I have to wait for the Mac to spin up external hard drives, even if I want to save to the internal drive

Where did you guys find Alexis because her final thoughts at the end were so well thought out. I'm not sure most "average" users would have that awareness. She is absolutely right and I see so many friends/family who never listen to her sage words. You have to know what you're going to use the machine for and what you're hoping to achieve. So many people buy ridiculously overpowered and expensive machines for the standard enough tasks they want to do. And the other side of the scale is even worse, people who want to game but buy something underpowered because it's cheap. A lot of less tech-literate people are scared and intimidated when buying a machine and never ask for help in understanding their needs for whatever reason, maybe they're afraid to look stupid to people they know, and then take advice from a salesperson which may not always have their best interest at heart.
