The engine light will set when the cat is only about 95% efficient instead of 100%. That's why I've used them on my cars. If the code comes back with the spacer on, then the cat is very inefficient and needs to be replaced
Dude i had to watch 10 videos to get to your video…all I wanted to know was where it needed to be installed, before or after Cat and you are the only one that said it lol.
You are the only one that said after cat. I installed mine before cat and thought the thing was junk. I'm gonna try after the cat and see what happens. Thanks!
You're welcome. Putting it before the cat can actually make the engine run bad as it's not getting the right o2 signal to adjust air and fuel. Good luck!
I have been chasing a p0420 fault on my truck for the better part of 4 months, hoping it wasn't the catalytic converter. After replacing everything that could cause the fault, I've come to the realization that I need a new cat. But now that I know these things work, I'm just going to gut it and throw one of these in. Thanks for the help.
Don’t gut it or it won’t work. This only works if the gasses coming out are under regulations this makes it think it’s much better. If you gut it it won’t work because the system will see the number are way off
I live in NYC my cat was stolen on a public street at 1pm in traffic, and I installed an aftermarket cat which failed after a year,So I put on one piece of 02 sensor which got rid of my codes still working after 2 years,Never met a mechanic who even checked or cared,as long as your car passes emissions you get your sticker!
You can also add a gallon of lacquer thinner to half a tank of gas and drive it highway and try and goose it when ya can and it will clean your cats and fuel injectors too and get rid of that po420 code. I did this on my 02 outback 2.5, my sisters 2003 Chevy Express 3500 15 passenger van, my dad's 02 sienna, and now my 01 VW Jetta GLS 2.0 and it has worked for all of them and it really brings your engines pep in it's step back. I always change my fuel filter after doing this cause it purges all that gunk out but is not necessary but they're easy enough to do so that's my recommendation. I also did this on my 08 subie legacy GT I sold that was tuned with Cobb racing tuner and more hollowed the cat and did this to it and was before TN stopped requiring emissions but it worked perfectly and never had any codes so what you're saying def works but for anyone not wanting a hollow cat or don't want to go under their vehicle the lacquer thinner works. I learned this from Scotty kilmers mechanic channel just do a search if interested.
My situation is different and I hope this works. I live in PA and i bought a used Buick Enclave that happens to be a ULEV CA car. I get a P0420 code. Just found out all three cats were replaced. I still get the code because the cats that were installed were NOT the ULEV CA cats. So hoping that installing a spacer gets the downstream sensor out of the exhausts direct flow, gives me a better (lower) reading and tricks the ECM to think that everything is good. Because those cats are like $1000 each to replace
Mine too. I got scammed. I’m in California and I had both my cats replaced on my Lexus. Apparently they did not use CA ULEV cats, but instead used aftermarket cats which are not legal in California. And now the shop that replaced them is out of business lol so I’m screwed. Luckily I was Able to permanently register my vehicle in Montana which does not require smog, however I still want to turn off the CEL light.
Hell yeah! Even though I know its not a big deal seeing the check engine light always bothered me, and spending $800+ for new cats on a beater makes no sense, these are lifesavers.

@wr_replayzz5937 if the cat is below efficiency enough to set a engine light, it's possible the emissions will be above a threshold for it to fail emissions. It's not a guaranteed fail
I can verify that these do indeed work. Check engine light goes off and stays off. Will this work on a car that’s fully catless? I got a 2008 ISF that has no secondary cats and no primary cats with PPE headers. The only codes I’m getting is PO136 and PO137 and that’s relating to B1S2. If these work I’m assuming I just need to put it on the primary ones?
@@rodrigob.9294 The front 02 sensor does that function. It lives in the exhaust manifold. This rear 02 sensors job is to make sure that the cat is working properly. It has no influence regarding how the engine runs.
Thanks for the video. Will this solve the related issues with cat malfunctioning or will it just keep the check engine light off? (Car shaking, trouble accelerating, etc)
QUESTION I HAVE A p0420 code as most ppl I’ve read you said rear is it rear downstream that will correct my issue and I’m assuming you only need 1 right??
Hello, I have a 2007 Toyota Avalon with a new Doorman aftermarket catalytic converter I installed about 2 years ago, I just got a P0420 code this week. So I doubt it's the converter,... In any event, I'd like to buy one of these are they universal? Thanks. BTW...just subbed
My car they recommended to do this (I'm getting a 90 degree angle) and they said to try it due to the cat being a new one (they don't make the originals anymore) but it would confuse the sensor and ECU MIL unit to think there is a problem with the cat, however doing my MOT in the UK where they do emissions checks, they stated that the cat was actually fine and the O2 sensor just couldn't understand what was happening. So I'm hoping when I do this, it fixes the issue.
I put it on my downstream 02 sensor and I’m getting a check engine light for the 02 sensor circuit not working properly any idea on what could cause this I haven’t checked the voltage but the sensor isn’t broken or damaged either
I’m having this issue with my 2013 workvan, hate having the check engine light keep popping up. Where were you able to find on of these spacers? I can’t seem to find anything on eBay or Amazon.
Does this work if you don’t have cats I have a 90 bronco that I deleted the whole emission system, including the smog I have zero cats on my exhaust system but I do have mufflers
Whatsup man, i replaced my cats but the sensor is still reading rich, maybe another fault but i have a p2099 and p2097, but its reading rich on the downstream, thinking of putting these on so i can pass the inspection, lets hope for the best
P2099 and P2097 mean that your system is running LEAN, NOT "rich", and that the ECU has commanded as far RICH as it is allowed to go, and the exhaust is STILL too lean. The spacers will do NOTHING for those codes, and WILL just make the problem worse. Fix your exhaust leaks, and that will take care of the codes. ALSO make sure that your fuel filter isn't plugged, and that you have enough fuel pressure.
Hi, I have a question I have the p0430 because my cat is dying, i heard that you have less power if this code shows up. Does the spacer also bring the power of the car back or is just the check engine light gonne

Most cars have the same size. You can Google your car and type o2 thread pitch size for more info. Most o2s are also the same thread as standard spark plugs, so you can use a defouler instead
Should i clean the catalytic converter first before installing this spacer???
@@umeshyadav4673 don't need to, but wouldn't hurt
Will this work on a car that’s fully catless? I got a 2008 ISF that has no secondary cats and no primary cats with PPE headers. The only codes I’m getting is PO136 and PO137 and that’s relating to B1S2. If these work I’m assuming I just need to put it on the primary ones?
Hey, it's cheap enough to just try. And yes only install them on the monitored cats (and only space the sensor after the cat)
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesThanks for the fast reply I’ll try it out and hopefully it works
Just wondering if after putting the spacer on, the catalyst monitor should state “ready” if the spacer is working correct?
Yes after the monitor has completed its test, might need to drive it for several days
Does this give the computer inaccurate information that will hurt the air/fuel mixture and give you bad mileage?
No, it won't interfere with proper A/F. It goes on the rear o2 bung. Which all that does is monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles well, but if it accuses rich mixture, it wont send the information to the module to lean the mixture? Isnt it the function?
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesif I do it to the 02 sensors closer to the engine would anything bad happen
@@rodrigob.9294
The front 02 sensor does that function. It lives in the exhaust manifold.
This rear 02 sensors job is to make sure that the cat is working properly. It has no influence regarding how the engine runs.
In VW group cars with a/f sensor in the front the rear one is used also for the mixture. Other brands I do not now.
Thanks for the video. Will this solve the related issues with cat malfunctioning or will it just keep the check engine light off? (Car shaking, trouble accelerating, etc)
Just keeps the light off
QUESTION I HAVE A p0420 code as most ppl I’ve read you said rear is it rear downstream that will correct my issue and I’m assuming you only need 1 right??
Yes the rear. And 1
Hello, I have a 2007 Toyota Avalon with a new Doorman aftermarket catalytic converter I installed about 2 years ago, I just got a P0420 code this week. So I doubt it's the converter,... In any event, I'd like to buy one of these are they universal? Thanks. BTW...just subbed
Yes they are universal. Thanks for the sub
After installing should I reset the code or will the code reset itself after sufficient driving?
@@edbreyer I would clear it if you have a tool, but yeah it'll eventually clear itself
What’s the number so I can get it at a local parts store???
google it with walmart keyward, the sellers change sometimes
My car they recommended to do this (I'm getting a 90 degree angle) and they said to try it due to the cat being a new one (they don't make the originals anymore) but it would confuse the sensor and ECU MIL unit to think there is a problem with the cat, however doing my MOT in the UK where they do emissions checks, they stated that the cat was actually fine and the O2 sensor just couldn't understand what was happening. So I'm hoping when I do this, it fixes the issue.
@AnonymousCaveman if thr code is p0420 then the spacer should fix that
I put it on my downstream 02 sensor and I’m getting a check engine light for the 02 sensor circuit not working properly any idea on what could cause this I haven’t checked the voltage but the sensor isn’t broken or damaged either
The o2 may be bad. Sometimes breaking them loose and tightening can make one fail if it's about to anyway
I’m having this issue with my 2013 workvan, hate having the check engine light keep popping up. Where were you able to find on of these spacers? I can’t seem to find anything on eBay or Amazon.
I got mine on walmart.com
A couple of sparkplug foulers work too.
What thread size would I need for a Ford f150? I see many sizes but I’m not sure
M18 x 1.5 I believe
Does this work if you don’t have cats I have a 90 bronco that I deleted the whole emission system, including the smog I have zero cats on my exhaust system but I do have mufflers
Yeah it can still work. Cheap enough to try. If you get the engine light still, you can try a longer one.
Another video shows a different version of the spacers on a camaro thats missing two of its four cats.
Not sure if thats instructive or not?
What does it mean when you add this but code still pops right up ?
@anthonybaeza2215 the converter must be very inefficient, and should be replaced
after having a misfire ruin the original cat and now on aftermarket and about to do a catless these should have no trouble with either one
Do I need two of them? Or do I need just one?
one per cat
Hi, I have a question
I have the p0430 because my cat is dying, i heard that you have less power if this code shows up. Does the spacer also bring the power of the car back or is just the check engine light gonne
Hello. You do not have any reduced power with a weak cat. The only time you do is if it melts down and clogs.
Would this work on a cat delete to avoid a tune?
@@ArghhhhMose it's possible. Not guaranteed. Worth a try
I think its depwnds on what car you put them on. 02 spacers dont work on the BMW's (at least the newer one )
HELLO EMERGENCY, I have a old 1998 Volvo S90 with a rattling cat and i know the cat comb has gone bad, how can i delete my clogged catalytic with out affecting the air / fuel ratio???
You can remove the exhaust from the rear of the cat and knock loose the comb with a hammer and pry bar, then rev the engine without the exhaust to blow it out
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I can run a hollow cat with no problem?
@@SiLenT90723 yeah
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Okay sorry if im bugging lol but just to be clear, I open unbolt my exhaust if possible and hollow out my cat till theres nothing and just bolt it back on with the O2 spacer on the rear o2 correct? and leave the front o2 without spacer correct…?
@@SiLenT90723 Yes
Is it true it’s bad to run them on upstream sensors?
@Moocow444 yes, it will mess up the oxygen reading. And it won't fix the p0420
Hi there will this work on a decated exhaust system. Ave got 2 sensors do I use 2 or just on o2 sensor thanks
Hi, it may keep the light off for a while. You can stack 2 spacers. Only put them on the downstream o2.
Is that the one on exhaust manifold or under car thanks just tried but still got the light on
Hello I have Acura tl 2012. I am getting P0430 low threshold bank 2. Should I install the spacer in front sensor? Is it sensor 1 or 2 I would appreciate help thx
Sensor 2. The one behind the cat, towards the rear of the car

Whats the correct fitment for honda accord 2008? I saw these on Ebay but not sure of the size, so i cannot buy it as i dont know the size lol.. please help.
Most O2 sensors are the same thread size in my experience
@BigBensCarsAndCycles thank you, not really sure if my accord fits; M18X1.50 says from the item description. Its 45mm, help me please
I tried one of these sensor spacers . It didn't work.
I clean my sensor with gasoline ones per year and I do not remember when last time it pop up again. My mileage 170,000 miles
If i have an 02 sensor code because the 02 sensor isnt working is it safe to install this instead of replacing the 02 sensor or will the computer not get the right reading of oxygen it needs to send to the engine?
Hi, this isn't designed to aid in fixing o2 sensors, it's designed for inefficient catalytic converters
I have a 2014 1500 chevy silverado. I have no cat, just a y pipe. I replaced o2 sensors because I kept getting codes for it. Once I replaced them I got a P0430 code. Mind you I also have a k&n cold air intake on it. I was recommended these 02 spacers but I'm not sure what to do.
The rear o2 spacers should help get rid of your P0430
Not if the cat is completely GONE they wont....
My downstream 02 sensor voltage is not oscillating and it shows p420 ! So if I fix a spacer will remove the code ?
Yes it should
I purchased the same one and installed it. On a test drive now. we'll see if the light goes off.
I've heard these are super hit or miss
Hi, good luck. If your light comes back, the cat is definitely very inefficient. These work, but to a certain threshold.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles lol well there are no cats. So it may not work. Haven't had cats for the last 60k+
@epicraptorman gotcha. If the light comes back, you can try stacking 2 spacers, or install a resistor in the signal circuit

Any will work. Walmart.com has them. They're all pretty much the same
will they work if i have a bad sensor?
No
i have seen the screens break on them? have you noticed this happen on yours
I haven't yet.
Can people from California report in the comments if this worked for them or not recently and on newer vehicle's? We can get some stats going and also if the smog tech guy is physically checking under the vehicle for these, thank you
Works perfectly, if the smog shop looks under the car then remove it right before you go get the smog it’ll still pass because the smog monitors are completed, Gotta take it off right around the corner from the smog shop though lol
If they work in Maine, they WILL work in Cali. You people are not THAT special there...
I mean, I KNOW you guys can get cancer from certain chemicals that the rest of us in the 49 other states can NOT, but an O2 spacer not working in Cali? NO...

Google it, it's on walmart.com, sellers change all the time. It'll be a search result. Or get defoulers on amazon
So I don’t have a catalytic converter I was getting code P0054 and P0060 so I put the same spacers on the downstream sensors and I haven’t got a check engine light but I still keep getting the same codes. Only once instead of twice, so I was getting P0054 twice and P0060 twice is that normal
thats a heater resistance code, internal failure of the rear o2 sensor. Need to replace the sensor
How would they know you did this if they only plug up to obd2 port?
Exhaust "sniffer"
After installation, the p0420 code will not show up on the obd2 scanner right ????
You'll have to clear the code and drive it until the monitor completes. If the code doesn't come back, you're good. If it does, then your cat is VERY inefficient
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I will update you after clearing it
Do these help with a jerking motion from bad cats?
No. Sorry

Hello , i had the code P0420 i put a spacer and now i got a code P013A , i have a Ford Fusion 2016 , should i change the sensor as well ? And way to make it work ?
Can someone help me with it pls ?
@FranciscoGonzalez-ou4jv your car may have a downstream trim. Putting the o2 spacer on may have fixed the p0420, but caused that new code. Time for a catalyst

So if I cut my cat out and replace it with pipe I put this where the 02 after the cat is?
Yeah after the cat
@@BigBensCarsAndCycleswhat about the front o2 wheere would you plug that in if the thread was on the cat itself?
so its only for downstream not for upstream?
Correct
do you need a spacer on both cats or just driver side
You need 1 spacer on each cat that's setting a code. P0420 would be the bank 1 cat, bank 2 sets p0430. I'd you're unsure, put one on both
What if your cat is not bad, just aftermarket exhaust causing the light? You should get away with emissions testing as long as it is working correctly right?
If the emissions are within a certain limit it should be fine
gonna be doing one of these on my girlfriends car. We've replaced the cat and both sensors and still throwing that code at us so I hope this sorts it. Probably won't =D
Was it a new oem cat or aftermarket? If oem, there may be something else causing it, like a stuck open purge valve or vacuum leak
I used that same exact defouler on my Hyundai accent and it only keeps the CEL away like 2 percent of the time :(
If the cat is very worn it won't work
I have straight pipes. No cats. Will these work? My truck is stuttering really bad
Eventually, the catalytic converter clogged up, and if that happens, exhaust gases can be pushed back up into the engine.
Will it still work on a straight pipe? (Cat delete)
It should. The engine light may come on at times. You could wire in a resistor instead. I'd look that up too.
Will a spacer before the cat cause a issue?
Yeah that can set a check engine light and cause the engine to not run correctly. And it won't do anything to get rid of your cat code
