  • This is our Group Reaction & Review to AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Book 3 Episode 6. With guidance from Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin's final testament, Aang and Zuko both learn about the former's childhood friendship. Sozin suggested to Roku that the Fire Nation should control the destiny of the entire world to ensure universal prosperity. As Roku was the Avatar, he knew the importance of balance between all people and vehemently disagreed. When Sozin later conquered an Earth Kingdom colony, Roku swiftly defeated him in battle and threatened to kill him if he stepped out of line again.

The crazy thing is...Azula being a firebending prodigy makes so much sense because she has both a fire lord AND an avatar as ancestors.
Because Zuko was closer to his mom(and therefore, Roku), he was influenced by her compassion/humanity. Azula was closer to her dad (and therefore, Sozin) and inherited his ferocity and deadly nature.
Shows why Zuko is always going through it emotionally and Azula seems to show no remorse.

Just bad parenting that made Azula crazy, though. Ursula and Iroh always favored Zuko and gave him all the love, while seeing Azula as a crazy monster. Only Ozai cared about Azula because of her talents, not as a daughter. Poor Azula. Someone must be there loving her and tell her what is the wrong thing.

The reason Aang didn't need the summer solstice this time to communicate with Roku is because at the first time Aang didn't know how to Connect to his past Avatar(s) so he needed the solstice but now he obviously knew how to communicate (through meditation or when He feels that Roku wants to talk with him) with his past Avatar (s)

    • @samuelpain4746

Aang actually never needed a solstice to talk to roku since both times roku went to him to tell him where and when he wanted aang to go . But Roku choose to meet aang twice at solstices either for dramatic effect or bc Roku needed the spiritual power of a solstice to show aang what he wanted to show him.

Roku came to him in a dream, but he DID use the Solstice. He talked to Roku on the Winter Solstice.....and in this episode he talked to Roku on the summer solstice. Roku TELLS HIM to go to his home island...on the day of the summer solstice.....and Aang says, "Ok, Roku." How much plainer does it need to be? We see Aang going to Roku's home island. We never see a day by day calendar of Avatar....and people just take it for granted that its the exact same 12-month, 30-day calendar our own planet has, but really all we know is that there are days, weeks, years and seasons within those years. That aside, it's an edit....the writers are counting on you to assume...with your brain...that you are going to use the dialogue they just threw at you in the previous scene and apply it...to the FOLLOWING SCENE. Therefore...Aang meditates on Roku's home island on the Summer Solstice. This is not to be confused with the day of the eclipse....completely different celestial event....but the boneheads in this video make that mistake...unsurprisingly. Solstices are sacred days....the show uses the mysticism and history of our own solstices to imply a greater connection to the Spirit World...in this fictional world. Seeing as it is a long, and storied conversation with Roku....it makes sense that he'd want Aang to be strongly connected to him....and on the Summer Solstice of all solstices...the season of fire.

    • @landonmartin1433

Gabriele is right, there is a considerable age difference between Roku and Aang when being revealed as the avatar. The sages typically reveal the identity of the avatar when they turn 16 (might be different ages depending on the nation).
Aang was told when he was 12 because the monks new ahead of time that the fire nation was a threat and they couldn't wait.

@@ajsksksks5223 Yeah 16 is the age they are normally told, but sometimes there are reasons they are told earlier or even later. Kyoshi for example was told later then 16 because they litearally thought someone else was the Avatar but then she showed signs causing some to believe it was her.
I honestly think they tell them at 16 because they are basically guaranteed to be out of their emotional teen years and are more tempered. True Aang was told early but since Nomads are traught to be calm from birth and the weight of the world on his shoulders he had enough going to keep him tempered

That's why Sozin wanted to make it easier for Roku and protect his friend as well as fire nation territory. Only at the moment when he saw that Roku wouldn't be able to survive on his own, the opportunity opened up for Sozin to follow his on goals. That is what he did. In conclusion, he cared for Roku, but he cared much more for his goals.

Finally. This is arguably my favourite episode of Avatar. The further parallels between Zuko and aang.
    Ron Perlman, voices adult Sozin.
Pretty cool they have the same birthday. Its likely Roku was born to some other noble family and when he had the same birthday as the firelord's son they became friends.
They told Roku he was avatar when he was 16. Which is the standard age to tell them
This isn't a spoiler. It's said Roku took 11 years to master all elements. Then spent a year training to master the avatar state. 12 total. We don't know if his time was spent evenly mastering the other 3 but it's implied water gave him some trouble.
I like to think Sozin did go to the island with the intention to help for real, but at that last moment he saw the opportunity and took it.

First, Roku's earth bending master, Sud, is the earth bender seen in the intro.
Second, when Roku says that his avatar training was "bitter work," it was a call back to the season 2 episode "Bitter Work," in which Aang began his earth bending training, and Zuko restarted his training with Iroh, during which, which he learned of the aspects of the other elements.
Third, when Sozin began the 100 Year War, he didn't have inherently bad intentions. He began the war as his way of sharing the greatness and prosperity of the Fire Nation with the world, unlike his grandson, Ozai, who seeks world domination

I know LoK says No to all of this but LoK has a entirely different spirit world and retcons things here and there. One thing in common is that the previous Avatar can roam the Spirit world as Aang goes to Tenzin and frees him but LoK doesn't explain or doesn't do anything with this.

The attack on the Fire Nation is planned to happen during a solar eclipse, not the summer solstice. Although both can occur at the same time, it’s not very common. In the show, the summer solstice and solar eclipse are on two separate days (obviously, after watching this episode lol).
So in this episode, it was the summer solstice, which just means that it’s the longest day of the year and it’s typically the start of summer… This also tells us that it’s officially summer, and remember, Sozin’s comet is coming at the END of summer. They’re timeline is getting scarily close to the comet 😬

It took Roku 12 years to do what Aang is expected to do in just under 9 months, assuming best conditions. And even then, Roku started with the element of fire fully under his belt, whereas Aang was indeed a prodigy of airbending but still developed a lot throughout the show in his airbending skills, making it apparent that Aang at the beginning wasn't exactly a full master, despite the tattoo's.
One thing to note: Aang is technically 112 years old. Katara is like 14 or 15. If Aang had lived his regular life, being healthy, causing peace, stopping the war, and die of old age, it is very realistic to expect him to die at around the age of 98. Katara could easily have become the next Avatar, seeing as she is a water bending master at her age, and practically all of it over the course of three months, since the waterbending she did prior to her adventures with Aang was pretty much as basic as it gets.
Of course Aang's age is shortened drastically by the stress endured over this summer and also the lightning shot straight into his foot and back so there's that.
Notice that Iroh has helpers even among the fire nation, the people that have him locked up as a traitor. It shows what Aang tells us. Everyone, even the fire nation, has to be treated like they're worth being given a chance.
This show is great at teaching kids lessons all the time and does so without sounding preachy. Besides Katara the female characters in this show are phenomenally written (and even Katara isn't all bad either) to the point that their gender isn't a hindrance nor a point of attention beyond a footnote. Toph is blind and that one kid from the air temple, is in a wheelchair. This show tells everyone that disabilities are no obstacle for anything. Sokka's sexism/bigotry is quickly driven into the ground by Suki's boot, and he quickly learns how to be humble, which turns him into the most likable character of them all. Together with Zuko's character arc it shows that there is truly no shame in changing who you are, how you think, etc. (I'm speakin purely about Zuko's change in attitude, not his awful decision to betray his uncle and stay loyal to the fire nation or any of his choices since. The shift in attitude from "I MUST CAPTURE THE AVATAR" to "I'm angry because I feel like I don't know the difference between right and wrong anymore" is immense). Sokka also shows that being "regular" simply means you haven't identified your own strengths yet. Sokka, the strategy master, the map reader, comic relief, the schedule checker, master of the boomerang, proficient student of martial arts (as Suki's student), thinks he's "regular".

There is so much to say about that episode...
First, never underestimate volcanos. They are deadly weapons, especially in the fire nation that build his civilisation on it. Explosive one especially, with fast cloud of hot cinder. That's how Pompei was destroyed. Sozin came to help because he knew this catastrophy won't only affect Roku's island. If the smoke block the sky for month, you won't be able to grow plants.
Second, I love how they show that everyone is capable of bad and good. When you think about it, even Ozai was a child at one point, who inherited Sozin's mission to track the avatar. So you can have mercy with everyone, 'cause anyone can change and be better.
Third, Sozin's quest also explains what happen to Katara and Sokka tribe. They had to consider the possibility that the avatar had died with the other air bender. The next one in the cycle would have water. The North tribe could hold on with its huge city and walls. But not the south. That's why Katara is the only one of her tribe to have water bending.
Fourth, it's so sweet that Toph let herself being vulnerable, needing reassurance that friendship can last. They are her first friend, and she's still a child who was secluded for most of her life because of her blindness. And I love Sokka rational logic x)
Fifht, it also shows that even Avatar can make mistake. Someone like Kyoshi would have killed a bad man and take a pice of the land with her. Roku believed in Sozin and still feel guilty for it. Long live the Avatar...

The Summer Solistics is the beginning of Summer. Avatar Roku told Aang that he needs to defeat Ozai before Summers end when the comet ☄️ is coming
Aang isn’t the youngest Avatar. They were all Avatars from birth, Aang was just told earlier (at 12 instead of 16)…
The kids went to Ember Island. That’s where the Royal Family have a beach house. Roku’s island is covered in volcano ash.

However, the Air Monks told Aang of his status when he was 12, due to the 100 year war. He was told early because he needed to train as much as he could in order to defeat the Fire Lord. This was revealed in Season 1 Episode 12: The Storm.
