    Remember in the episode The Headband? The teacher and kids said that they don't dance in the fire nation.
    Yet another way to show how the fire nation went far from the original firebending essence. They erased the culture they used to have before the war

    Jeong Jeong might've taught Aang important lessons of discipline and patience but this episode I feel shows that Jeong Jeong would've been the wrong teacher for Aang because he saw fire as only bringing pain and destruction but the Sun Warriors show that it is also life. Think about where society would be right now without fire.

    • @jenso413
      @jenso413 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      and just humans in general. there’s a theory that I really believe that says that our brains started developing to the level they are now because of fire. because we started cooking our food (which no other animal does), we didn’t have to spend so much time grazing/foraging/eating since cooked food is significantly easier to eat. our brains require 20% of the calories eat, despite being just 2% of our bodyweight, and that level of energy just isn’t possible for other animals

  • @beclou9832
    @beclou9832 ปีที่แล้ว +155

    Ah yes, the Zuko field trips, love seeing Zuko slowly settling in with the Gaang, he's never really been in a group dynamic of others his age who will banter with him, the next episodes are probably my favourites though so excited for them :)

  • @oriyanbarnes
    @oriyanbarnes ปีที่แล้ว +82

    You're so right, the gaang didn't see his journey like we did.
    For them it went like this:
    The north pole he took Aang,
    Then they fought sort of with him against Azula in The Chase
    Then the next time was in the crossroads of destiny, he talked to Katara about changing but then sided with Azula and caused a loss to their team and Aang died.
    Then the most recent time they saw him was in the last episode, the western air temple.

    My favorite episode in the entire series. The way they explain what firebending’s true nature. The whole show they showed how everyone hates the Fire Nation for the things they do , while not knowing that they have been misguided and lied too about there culture for hundreds of years. For example , like how Aang went to school and the textbooks lied about what happened 100 years ago.

    Finally, WE'RE HERE!!
    This is my favorite episode for so many reasons. It is the first entire episode where we have a fully completed Gaang. Zuko was the last piece of the puzzle. On subsequent watchings, episodes prior to this, something feels missing. That something, is a fire bender in the group. We are almost at the end of the show, and THIS is the episode we learn the true nature of fire bending. Prior to this, as Jeong Jeong stated back in season one, All we are shown is that fire is pretty much just destruction, and pain. This is because of Sozin. He warped the very nature of fire as we know it. The true nature of firebending is just as amazing as any of the other elements. They are ALL equally important, and exist in perfect harmony with one another. It is a core principle of the show.
    All the elements bring life.. Water and Air obviously, Carbon and other elements from the Earth, and Fire gives the energy to do all the work.
    Water is healing and life
    Earth is stability and life
    Fire is energy and life
    Air is spirituality and life.
    I love the way we are lead to believe that Iroh was capable of such a thing as murdering a dragon, only to be surprised with the WHOLESOME fact that he lied, and all along he knew the true secrets. We finally know why Iroh is such a badass, and perfect mentor for Zuko. Prior to this episode, Iroh is the only member of the fire nation to bend using the traditional methods.

  • @oq1106
    @oq1106 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    I still have this theory that Sozen started this tradition because his own dragon turned on him after seeing him leave Roku and Fang to die. And he needed to spin having his own dragon killed.

    Great reaction Pudgey and Spartan! This episode was so instrumental in understanding firebenders and firebending. I love that Iroh lied to protect the dragons and the Sun Warriors, Aang finally conquering his fear of firebending and Zuko obtaining a new 'source' for firebending. If you recall every time before this episode Zuko had ever firebended he always grunted or shouted, and it sounded very rough, like he had said, his source of firebending was anger/rage and that drive for chasing/hunting down the Avatar. And now going forward, no more grunting/shouting/screaming, it's going to be almost 'tranquil firebending'! The amount of detail in this show down to the sounds one makes when bending is truly spectacular and unparalleled

Its extremely difficult to write a character who connects with the audience in such a way that even THEY have felt his pain, and watching him finally realize and change.... its so satisfying because he did everything he could do to actually be what he thought he should be.

    I have this theory that Azula's fire is blue because she made herself quit feeling things after her mother vanished. Her confession on the beach 100% convinced me that all this time, Azula was trying to get her mom to praise her like she praised Zuko. But it was Ozai that praised her instead. So I think that when she disappeared, Azula was GUTTED. She turned herself off, and became a weapon for her father so she could continue to have the love of her only remaining parent. I think that's when her fire went blue. And why it's so effing hot. I think it's because it's so much closer to lighting than fire with the amount of energy it packs. Iroh told Zuko lightning is sometimes called the cold-blooded fire. Requiring a perfectly calm emotional state to separate the energy to generate lightning. I can't think of a time EVER that she bent or did anything without this emotionless, calculated goal in mind: Please Father. She's FOURTEEN years old. It's just so sad by the end.

Right now its on demi-god patreon tier, and it will drop to the lower tiers through the normal schedule. For youtube, it will start dropping on here once ATLA is wrapped up. This was such a good episode about the origins of Fire Bending.
    Too bad Legend of Korra screwed it up.

      The origins of bending described in atla are are the same as korra. Bending is a martial art, not just a power

      just cause you don't understand properly it doesn't mean they "screwed it up" lol

      the way you don’t understand the difference bw being able to shoot fire willy nilly from your hands and being able to control, fight, and move in sync with the element is embarrassing. i can pick up a pencil and write words in another language, but that doesn’t mean i understand their meaning

      @@radicaldreamer927 The only original "benders" that we know of in the story have always been Dragons, Skybison, the Moon, Badgermoles, and the Lion Turtles, as they can all bend their energies inherently. Every mention of the "origin" in bending for humans in atla says "Learn". If every human could just learn to be a bender, then no one would have to be born as one. "Bending" has always been in two parts, the power and the art. The power is an inherent magical element inside some people. Katara in episode 1 can move water all she wants, but she doesn't know how to Waterbend. Actual Waterbending is a style of techniques to master in order to have refined control over water, making it an extension of your body, not just hydrokinesis. Furthermore, progression in bending has always been about gaining more knowledge, not power. Iroh said he studied Waterbenders in order to develop the technique to redirect lightning, That does not make him a Waterbender, he just Learned from their forms. The same goes for Z man; he could study bending all he wanted, it didn't make him a bender since he didn't have the power. As we see in the finale, if bending was only a thing to be learned, it couldn't just be taken away. It really isn't the show's fault that you misunderstand a fundamental aspect of it
