    comment guidelines for those unaware:
    -only discuss things that they’ve already seen, nothing upcoming. it’s fine to remind them of certain things after the fact but don’t point out specific details to note that they haven’t on their own.
    -do not confirm or deny theories that they have. they will figure it out.
    -do not explain things that the show itself will tell them later on.
    -lastly, PLEASE try not give bias opinions on upcoming events or characters. let them decide for themselves who they’ll like or dislike. even ones such as “wait until you meet!…” is toeing the line. they would have no idea who that person was if they were watching on their own right? so let’s not set expectations that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
    i know we’re all excited to see their reactions but they won’t be genuine if the guys already know what to expect. comments that break the rules have to be removed and that sucks so please be careful. thanks guys!

    In the Kyoshi Warriors episode, we see that Katara is able to bend water out of Aang’s lungs when he gets tossed by the Unagi. Then she learns healing in the Northern Water Tribe, so she has a good understanding of blood vessels and the human body as a whole. When they travel to the Swamp, Katara learns that waterbenders can control plants by bending the water within them. Then in this episode, Hama showed her how to draw water out of plants and thin air. On top of that Hama used blood bending on Katara. So all of those things combined makes it reasonable to me that Katara could pick up blood bending almost immediately, she had all of the ground work already, unlike Hama.

      @SpacepoetYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      i like to imagine they all have this sort of "sixth sense" for elements they can bend around them, like how toph uses that sense to approximate vision, katara likewise, under the full moon, would be able to "feel" all the big water sacs floating around in this forest, as well as hamas control over them. its shown that she is reasonably able to do this with herself against hamas bending, essentially bloodbending her blood into what shes thinking instead of what hama wants (i imagine this probably feels like fighting under increased gravity, since you would have to be exterting your mind, body AND bending just to maintain yourself and fight hama actively bending your blood as well, so mad props to katara + the moon) so its no big stretch to think that she could have even bloodbent hama just by reaching out her hands and panic thinking "STOP! I DESIRE EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO PREVENT THIS" and hamas blood obeyed

      Agreed, Hama had to learn from scratch (which is 100x more difficult than teaching someone) when she was decades past her prime and hasn't properly bent water in years. Like Katara she is a genius in her own right.

    • @thevoidbender
      @thevoidbender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@B0bbyLawton on top of that Katara has quite a bit of healing experience and knowledge of the human body that would help with this. She is the only healer of the group, knows enough to deliver a baby and while we only see it once she probably learned at least a little during her time in the healing hut in the Northern Tribe before she got to train under Paku.

    Also it has been confirmed that blood bending is extremely painful, especially if you fight against it. It’s every ounce of blood in your body being pulled in a direction you don’t want to go in. Fighting it would probably be like tearing your body in two different directions, and not fighting it means you get slung around by the liquids in your body. It’s horrible to think about.

      Katara had every right to feel upset! I remember watching this episode and feeling so sad for her by the end. Katara's very loving and gentle in nature so it's understandable why she wouldn't want to control someone and essentially become a monster

      @emeraldparadox1001 😧 Same here! I'm actually shocked reading people call Katara a baby. Of course she's not! She had every reason to be upset. Katara thought she found a mentor, someone who she thought she could trust, who came from her village only to find out Hama is sick, twisted and cruel. What sucked even more was that she had to use the same brutal bloodbending to save her and her friends. It's no wonder Katara banned the Bloodbending method later on.

  • @Kcdragonman
    @Kcdragonman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    You also have to think about the morality of blood bending. Hama put it well when she said it’s about forcing your will onto another person. That’s why Katara was crying. She was basically forced to do something incredibly immoral to save he friends.

    • @contentiouscritic

      Forcing your will onto someone else's body without their consent is either slavery or rape depending on how you look at it, but either way it's considered one of the ultimate immoralities.

      @Anthony Jay well yes i do agree with you but i personally feel that its more about ethics. Honestly speaking in this world a person who has killed someone faces less scrutiny and hostility than a person who has raped someone (which is possible by both imperius curse and bloodbending) ..... So yeah bending itself is quite deadly but just like our world there are some things in avatar world that are not considered ethical and humane. But then again just like our world that doesn't stop some people from doing it

    As other commenters have said, Katara's technique at 25:46 is very reminiscent of earthbending. But what is even better, is that throughout the show you can find instances where they've all borrowed techniques from each other. It's mostly blink-and-you-will-miss-it, but it's there.

    The lesson that I think is to take away from this episode is when you put people in an extreme scenario of entrapment or prison they have to find a way out, out of spite and determination. Toph was put into her cage it gave her the opportunity to discover metal bending

    • @ruinsofxerxes768
      @ruinsofxerxes768 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, but I just feel unlike with toph and metal bending, the shows didn't pay proper respect to bloodbending (and water bending in general), after this episode. BB was just used in a pretty one dimensional way.

      @@ruinsofxerxes768 That is true , as a whole it didn't get a lot of attention but if you actually think about it when katara is at the northern water tribe and she gets told to go learn some healing isn't that kind of the same as moving the blood in the body or anything else in the proper way to help circulate the blood flow and help them heal the bruising or what not

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in previous comments but I would like to. The great thing about the bending system/magic system is that it feels limitless even though it has its own rules to where it makes sense does water and blood does Earth in metal but it isn't like it's pulling it out of thin air where as some quirks or some super saiyan level just come out of nowhere just for believing it does

    If you pay attention to the fighting styles in the show, the characters interacting gives them new skills in combat. The move Katara uses to "stop" Hama redirecting her water by applying her palm is really reminiscent of earthbending -- where the bender has to confront things head-on. Part of the reason that she's so powerful as a bender is because she is learning other styles of bending and can incorporate that knowledge into her own style.

    if you look back at the clips from when Hama was blood bending Katara, they show a few shots that are strictly from Katara's perspective. she was looking straight up at Hama, which basically gave her the chance to study her pose and technique to restrain someone and pull them down. that was the exact move Katara used at the end to stop her!

    Katara learned bloodbending so much quicker than hama because hama developed it herself so she had to practice and perfect it, also she had to make sure no one was around AND that there were rats around when she had the opportunities, so she probably couldn't practice much even when there was a full moon. Katara learned it quick because she was being blood bended herself, so she got to experience it personally and she saw how hama moved while she did it. Once you've mastered waterbending, learning new waterbending techniques is a lot simpler.
