As a survivor of Catholic school, I can tell you that the young woman is wearing the clothes of a novice, not the full habit of someone who has taken vows; think of it as a nun in training.
@@andreadeamon6419close, but not quite; Jodi Benson is both the speqking and singing voice of Ariel. Andrea Robinson (who does the singing for Mary Robert) was the singing voice of Queen Athena in one of the direct to video sequals of the Little Mermaid. They're both fabulous
Correct. If you watch The Sound Of Music (1963), Sister Maria wears a similar outfit compared to the other nuns because she's still a nun "in training."
If it's like monks, they spend a year as a novice. They vow to live the life of a nun for one year. At the end of that year they are brought in to mother Superior and asked is there a prepared to take their lifelong vows. When they take their lifelong vows they get the habit to wear. My brother was a novice Benedictine monk. But at the end of the first year he decided it wasn't for him.
Mary Wickes, who played the first choir leader, was a wonderful character actress whose career lasted more than 50 years on screen! This and its sequel are her two last performances.
100% agree with you! It's my fav comedy with Whoopi. I had it on VHS and watched so many times I could recite it from start to finish! I doubt I could now. It's been forever since I watched it.
Fun fact for you: Bette Midler, the lead actress in Hocus Pocus, was originally offered the role of Dolores in Sister Act but turned it down for her role in Hocus Pocus. Turned out to be a huge success for both actresses who got big success with these roles that both featured Kathy Najimy in a supporting role.
Also, Kathy Nijmy's line of " Come And Sing A Spell" when Whoopi goes into the choir rehearsal for first-time was a reference to her filming both this movie and "Hocus Pocus"
I think Bette turned down the role not for Hocus Pocus but For the Boys for which she won a Golden Globe but it was not nearly as financially successful as Sister Act. That is why there was ZERO chemistry between Whoopi and Harvey Keitel although she plays the comedy so well in the convent and has lots of chemistry with her cast.
My understanding is that Sister Mary Roberts is wearing the outfit of a postulant which is someone who’s in the process of becoming a nun. Another fact about her is she’s the only actress to not sing as she’s dubbed over.
I pretend the sequel doesn't exist. It's such a classic example of a rushed Hollywood sequel to an unexpected hit. Doesn't have nearly the charm of the original.
Sister Mary Lazarus, the grumpy older nun who was the original choir director, was played by the legendary Mary Wickes. Her career spanned almost 60 years, usually playing wisecracking sidekicks. She was in the movie “Who Done It” with Abbott and Costello, “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, and was the live-action reference model for Cruella De Vil in the original animated “101 Dalmatians.” Her final film role was voicing one of the gargoyles in Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” but her final on-screen role was in the 1994 version of “Little Women” starring Winona Ryder.
Loved the reaction! The nun who was dressed differently was not yet a full nun. She is a novitiate, or nun in training. When she takes her vows she will switch to wearing a full habit and look the same as the others. Her vocals are dubbed in by a different singer, but I still adore that actress and her role. Definitely watch the sequel! It is different, but still very VERY good!
People don’t realize or give the credit to Whoopi for her catalog of movies, and especially her career as a Comedian. She really could be in the Top 15 of comedians.
@@AwesomeUSMovies I watched the entire series which is something I rarely do; Maggie Smith is extroidinary and steals the show. I wonder if anyone has reacted to Downton Abbey yet? You would enjoy it.

You definitely will need to watch sister act 2 you will love it. And ask your question the sister Mary Roberts had not taken her full vows yet. I highly highly recommend you watch color purple Whoopi Goldberg's first film.
Yes, but Color Purple is far of being a funny film ! This is very far of Ghost, Sister Act, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and Jumpin' Jack Flash ! You should have tell him !
James - I have to say that this reaction is just what I needed after a long hard week. I adore this movie - and you made me giggle like crazy. The second Sister Act is also a MUST watch. If you want MORE feel good comedies please check out Nine Months, Father of the Bride 1 and 2, and Three Men and a Baby. ALL worth a watch. Cheers from Ontario, Canada! :)

I disliked her song with The Fugees "Killing Me Softly" in 1996, but I LOVED her in "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (1993) ! I loved her voice and the way she looked
