I think it's one of the few sequels that's even better. The addition of the kids is just great. And that performance of Oh Happy Day, man. And of course Lauren freaking Hill!
I've never seen this movie. I will tell you this first. I love Whoopi Goldberg. Watch the View every day I can . Just to see her and Joy . I remember seeing both of them back in the day when they did stand up. That being said, not crazy about this movie. Ghost is my favorite Whoopi movie. Sorry 😢.
What a fun reaction! My daughter was nine when this came out and she was OBSESSED. She knew the entire soundtrack and she would put on a whole show for us.
I saw this movie in the theatre as an 8 year old kid with my grandmother the next town over. We got lost on the way there and made it to the theatre just on time. I had been very scared when we were lost, but this light hearted classic made for a great time with my grandmother that I’ll never forget. When I watch this movie, I’m instantly transported back to that time.
I don't think I ever saw part one as a kid, but I distinctly remember going to see part two at the dollar theater (at age 11) haha..but this definitely feels like one of those movies my parents wouldve rented on vhs at the local video store (not blockbuster) haha
One of the subtle character growth details I love in this film is that during the second chase through the Kitchens, Whoopi is being a lot more careful and apologising to people she knocks over.
I grew up Catholic. My mom took my sister and I to see this movie when it came out. I remember there was lots of laughter in the theater. Mom later too my grandma to see this movie and my grandmother thought it was hilarious. This is a great movie! Thanks for reacting to it! Oh, one note, the Mary Wickes (Sister Mary Lazarus) was a well known television actress with many credits. Her most well known roll to people my age (I'm 40) would be her roll as the house keeper, Marie, on a television mystery series called "The Father Dowling Mysteries" staring Tom Bosley and Tracy Nelson.
She also plays another nun in both films The Trouble with Angels and Where Angels go Trouble follows, , and White Christmas, as well as a recurring role on the the original Dennis the menace TV show. And before she passed away the voice of the gargoyle Laverne in Disney's The Hunchback of Norte Dame.
@@taerdrop Mary Wickes seemed to appear on every TV show when I was growing up. I knew her best as Aunt Zelda on Sigmund & the Sea Monsters. Watched it every Sat am as a kid. Prior to Dowling, Sigmund was one of her longer running TV gigs. Also remember her from reruns of the original Mickey Mouse Club. Trivia: She was on episodes of all three of Lucy's shows - I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy.
One of my favorites! When I see it on tv I can't help but watch. I feel silly saying this but I get teary eyed by the end of the film. Glad you enjoyed it.
I loved this when it came out. Had it on VHS and later upgraded to the special edition DVD that has Sister Act 2 with it. So much fun, hoping you watch the second one too.
I've only seen this a couple of times, so imagine my surprise that Ernie was played by Max Grodenchik, who played Rom in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine tv series.
If you are doing Whoopi reactions you HAVE to do the 1986's Jumping Jack Flash. Absolute brilliant film and showcases Goldberg's comedic side to the fullest. Hardly anyone reacts to or seems to know about this little gem.
My introduction to Whoopi Goldberg was when HBO aired her one woman Broadway show in 1985. It was the first time a stand-up brought me to tears. It’s worth watching.
Really enjoyed the reaction. Thank you for that. I remember my sister's women ensemble high school chorus did a medley of the Sister Act songs. That makes this movie have even more of a place in my heart since I lost my sister three years ago.
The director of this, Emile Ardolino, had quite a career. In addition to "Sister Act," he also directed "Gypsy" with Better Midler and "Dirty Dancing." Sadly, he passed away fairly young at 50.
Mary Wickes (Sister Mary Lazarus) was in White Christmas and The Music Man. This plot reminds me of another Bing Crosby movie - Going My Way - where he plays a real priest.
Something that’s not in the IMDB info: Disney originally offered this to Bette Midler (as you read) but she turned it down after they gave her the option to do both “Hocus Pocus” and “For The Boys” which I always view as a win-win for both actors since Whoopie ended up with not just Sister Act but a the sequel that both adults and children love her for while Bette now has a children’s classic and a film that gave her another Best Actress nomination (which she should’ve won, in my opinion).
As far as her acting career, Whoopi had already been nominated for an Oscar, an won Golden Globe for Best Actress for "The Color Purple" (1985). She also won both Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in "Ghost"(1990).
I was 10 when this came out, and I wore that VHS tape OUT watching this at least 3 times a week, if not more. I loved singing along to all of the songs. The second one is great too! You'll def have to give that a watch!
You and my daughter, who was 9 at the time. She watched the movie over and over and over and put on a show for us, singing every single song. She even got her older brother to dress up and sing along. Hilarious.
As someone who is not Catholic, I came to this movie for Whoopi and loved it! Since I had VERY young kids in 1992, I'm sure I saw this when it came to my local video rental store! There's a flashback for you! I'm sure I haven't seen this movie since it first came out. I seriously loved watching it with you, Shanelle! Thank you for the memory and making me want to watch it again in full!
8:11 small detail but during the chase through the kitchen, Dolores stops for a second to see if the person who fell is ok. During the first chase, she was just worried about saving herself - which was completely understandable in those circumstances. Not saying she was a bad person. Just a little detail I like
I love how you can always spot the sort of Producer-motivation to greenlight - not that it's anything hidden but, a recognition of the hook at its core being a live-out-loud sexual character being thrown into a quiet convent to stay low, yet both sides having a heartfelt character arc as a result. Also the added element of that structure being a most suitable vehicle for a particular actor's style. By the time the mid 80s came along, I feel like Hollywood had somewhat just began to get into the groove of latching onto formulas that would appeal to the broadest audiences. Films prior definitely had some structure to them but there's something relatively deliberate about the beat sheet of any given successful film starting in the 80s. That said, despite the formulas, there wasn't this rush to pump out endless amounts of content just to hold subscribers - filmmakers aimed to make their film special.
Love that you enjoyed it. I’ll have to check if you reacted to Ghost, Whoopi is phenomenal in that one. You gotta see it if not, also Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
Yesss, I _love_ this flick. Sister Mary Clarence is iconic. 🙌🏻

I watched _Sister Act_ 1 & 2 on full packed matinees back then at the cinema, I don't remember if the second film but the first one had to be opened in my nearest cinema on four auditoriums to appease the demand.
PLEEEEEEASE Shanelle, please also react to Sister Act 2. I dont understand why, but noone does! Its so sad, cause the movie is as good, in a completely different way.
One of my favorites growing up and still love it. I'm not sure if it's covered in the trivia but in the final scene if u look in the background by the door ull notice two guys in black suits wearing matching hats is Elwood and Jake from the blues brothers it was a little tribute.
This was a fun time. Good memories. I was 15 when this came out and I went with my grandma to see it. I've seen it a few times since and it's just such a nice wholesome movie. So glad you enjoyed.
I still enjoy watching this film every few years, but I was a teen when it came out, and going through a "I wanna be Catholic" phase at the time. There's something about the blend of high-church aesthetic and the music in this film, that really resonates...
18:10 Right. Because it's a repeat from the scene in the beginning. Not because through the kitchen is just the way one runs away in a mob casino, like I at this moment realize was the reason I had accepted when I watched this movie as a kid. 😆
2:24 - This girl is the same actress who plays Young Guinan in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Rascals. 4:53 - Another Star Trek connection: Vinny is played by Max Grodenchik, who played Quark's brother Rom on Deep Space 9. 9:38 - Sister Mary Lazarus is played by classic actress Mary Wickes. She's been acting since 1942 and has been playing old women at LEAST since White Christmas in 1954. We lost her in 1995 and her last role was in the posthumous release of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (her second-to-last was actually Sister Act 2). St. Paul's was my grandparent's parish. Also, the first time I saw this movie was near the end of it's theatrical run IN San Francisco.
I went to Catholic School until 9th grade, and I LOVED this movie and the sequel. am so glad you did this! I would love to see you react to First Wives Club. It is one of my favorite movies.
Haha - I so enjoy this and the sequel, and am so glad you've seen this one now! 😊 Watching this is a great way to get a smile. It's really a product of its time as far as the (on-screen) humor. Other trivia might be: As a Catholic who has also academically studied theology, the remixes 🤭 in this movie wouldn't actually pass for a Mass because during Mass the music is an extension of the communal worship, so musicians in Mass should never call attention to themselves or do something that could be construed as a performance. That being said, I've definitely jammed to "I will follow Him" during church retreats. 🎸 Unfortunately, Catholics who don't actually *practice* the faith often get the headlines or end up traumatizing people, so I'm *really* glad this movie is out there to bring light and laughter.
So i love your channel for the reactions and the perspectives from an aspiring director, but the fact that you were singing some of the songs on point made this reaction so much better!! Keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to Sister Act 2 and either Dogma (if you can find it) or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back :)
-at the famous moment the hymn break out; THE B-I-G-G-E-S-T SMILE EVER given in a reaction... with a Sicilian 'Mobster' accent and a tear in her eye. - This was AWESOME!
I remember this feeling well. No Whoopi was not doing stand-up at this time she was a full-grown actress by this point. Her stand up was in the early 80s along with doing comedy relief with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. I highly recommend you watch the second film the music is still just as fun and the introduction of some not yet famous singers
Love this movie! It’s definitely one of those classic late 80’s/early 90’s big-premise movies and Whoopi is such a star it’s timeless 🙌🏼 I watched this all the time when I was little and definitely did not catch all the adult jokes/references til I revisited 😆 story of my life!
Funny story. Back in 1992, myself and a group of friends were out on the town, looking for a movie to watch. Everyone but me wanted to go see Sister Act, so I went along very reluctantly.....yet I ended up loving the film more than the rest of my friends 😉. I still love it to this very day!
I'd love for you to watch "Sister Act 2"... it's so fun!!!....... and great news they are currently working on "Sister Act 3: Kicking The Habit" w/ Whoopie, Kathy & Wendy are back and also Jennifer Lewis who was in Deloris's act in Reno..... not sure if any of the nuns fr. the two originals are coming back ( at least those that are alive) 🥰
14:40 - Not quite: the older gospel acts (James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, etc) actually took old, established gospel hymns and put their own twist on them, which earned them the ire of baptist churches all across the U.S. and especially in the south. That's how My Guy came about. This one, My God, is the original version.
13:10 - Oh! I just remembered: this actor was in Going Ape, another suggestion for the list. It also stars Tony Danza and your "celebrity lookalike", Danny DeVito! (to anyone about to jump me for that last bit first look up "Shanelle Riccio stand up" on youtube...and then go away).
This movie was a huge success and launched the second phase of Whoopi Goldberg's movie career, which had started strong in the 80s with leading roles in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Fatal Beauty, Homer and Eddie, Ghost and The Long Walk Home. On TV, she was mostly known as the character Guinan in Star Trek TNG at the time.
I believe, at this time in her career, Whoopi had won both of her Tony's from Broadway, her Oscar for Ghost, and long since her comedy stand-up album had won an Emmy. I think this was the time in her life she was working with Billy Crystal and Robin Williams on Comic Relief.
The sequel is WELL worth the watch. 10/10 would recommend, and Kevin Smith's "Dogma" as well if you're for another comedy w/ religious (but not preachy) themes.
Such an amazing icon! I must recommend the sequel; it’s bigger, louder, and better! There’s actually a third sequel planned with the original actresses returning for the roles and joining the cast is Bette Midler and Keke Palmer as Delores’ niece. The plot we know is Delores’ niece gets involved in a shady crowd. Now she must call on her friends to hide her. 👩🏿🦱💄💋👠🎤🎼⛪️🤍🖤❤️
Glad you liked Sister Act, Shanelle! I haven't come across anyone that didn't like it, and my mom caught it just about every time it came on TV. A minor correction, though: while Whoopi started out doing stand-up and was still doing it when she shot for Sister Act, her acting career was already well in full swing by then. She had already starred in the likes of Jumping Jack Flash, The Color Purple, Sarafina!, and Ghost (which she won Best Supporting Actress from) among others, and I can vouch for the latter three being definite must-watches.
Always loved this movie since it came out. My boyfriend and i went to see SA2 at the theater I wasn’t enjoying it as much as the first one but he was complaining throughout. He hadn’t seen first one and don’t remember if he really didn’t like it or it was a language thing since he wasn’t fluent in English but we walked out. Seeing the movie later by myself I enjoyed it more cause of Lauryn Hill but still preferred first one
Robert Miranda, who plays Joey here, plays a not dissimilar character in a movie I highly recommend, "Midnight Run". The character's name is...Joey. Is he the same person? Who can say?
One of the cops is played by actor Bill Nunn, he's a Spike Lee regular, my favorite role of his is in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, he played Radio Raheem.
I did not know that Raven Symoné had starred in the stage musical version! How did I not know that? Back in 2012?? Love Sister Act. Love Raven. Two great things that go great together. I have no doubt she was brilliant.
I loved this movie it came out. Being raised Catholic, it was very funny. Whoopi Goldberg was amazing, as she always is in her films. The actor I enjoyed most was Mary Wickes (in charge of the choir), a very successful movie star in her own right. She was a nun in a 1966 movie called "The Trouble With Angels" (and the 1968 sequel "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" which also takes place in a Catholic school run by nuns. I saw these movies as a kid in the 70s and as a Catholic kid in Catholic school, I thought it was hilarious. Mary Wickes was my favorite character in those movies and so when I saw her in Sister Act, it just pulled all the right heart strings. I absolutely love her. She was a very good Broadway actress and her first film role was in 1942's "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and she was excellent in that. She was also in "Now Voyager" w Bette Davis. She has a very long filmography and television career. She pops up in the most surprising roles. She was also the original Mary Poppins in the 1949 show Studio One in Hollywood.
Another funny story. When Sister Act 2 came out, I chose not to see it in the cinema, as I was fearful that it would be just a poorly made cash grab. Ended up renting it on DVD (or was it VHS tape?) a few years later, & was very pleasantly surprised by how well done it was. I almost like it more than the original.
Whoopi is obviously the star. Love her. And such a terrific supporting cast. Maggie, Kathy, Mary Wickes (Sister Mary Lazarus, the older one. Tremendous character actress from the 1940s and a decades-long career. Folks may remember her character of Emma the eavesdropping housekeeper in "White Christmas.") Wendy McKenna is my personal favorite. A: I've long had a thing for redheads; I had a crush on her even when I was 14 when it came out, and B: I identify most with her mousy, timid character finding something she loves- singing- and stepping out. Gets my feels every time, even today. I know she did not do her own singing, but she acts so sincere, and the joy on her face when she truly lets loose in song is just awesome. PS- the "young Dolores" actress they found was perfect; her big, toothy grin is absolute Whoopi Goldberg. Isis Carmen Jones played a young version of Whoopi in both this, and an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (young Guinan) in the same year.
Always loves Sister Act so much, greag reaction. Another iconic movie from 1992 is 'Death Becomes Her'. A fantasy comedy from Robert Zemeckis starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn.
During your live stream you said your hair looks ugly in this video. I love the way it looks. I haven't seen you look bad in any video, I think you always look amazing.
I remember her from mostly playing smart aleck maids and housekeepers in the sixties, but I also have seen her as a smart aleck teen in the forties. She was great.
the Actress who played the choir director is Mary Wicks . This isn't the first time she has played a nun. Back in the 60's there was 2 movies about a Catholic Girls School. in which Mary Wicks played a Nun . The Movies were called The Trouble with Angels and Where Angels Go Trouble Follows.
I didn't know you had stuff "in the vault"! Ha! Very cool! /This is an old vid so I won't say too much about the movie (other than to say I liked it but I have more affection for it now then when it initially came out). Whoopi came to prominence in the early 80s more as a performance artist/monologuist, and then as an actress in "The Color Purple".
I lived in Las Vegas and went to school at UNLV in the early 90s and I used to walk up and down Las Vegas boulevard and at the time you would see nuns and priests handing out pamphlets you would see Mormons and different religious groups handing out pamphlets on the strip right next to people handing out numbers for brothels and escorts it was a crazy scene especially when the Grateful Dead came to town then you had a whole new cast of characters, and they happen to come one year the same time as the National Finals Rodeo, so you can imagine the hodgepodge of people walking up and down Las Vegas boulevard.
For a while around this time, Whoopie was getting into movies. Another good one form this time is Jumping jack Flash. These got her her spot in Star Trek: TNG.
THIS film is ICONIC!! And the sequel was even more iconic!!!!! So happy we have this!!!
I think it's one of the few sequels that's even better. The addition of the kids is just great. And that performance of Oh Happy Day, man. And of course Lauren freaking Hill!
Gotsta watch Sister Act 2. A young Jennifer Love Hewitt and Lauren Hill.
Sorry 😢.
Old school Shanelle vibes! Glad you liked it and Sister Act 2 gives the same if not better vibes.
And THAT MOMENT in Sister Act 2 will blow Shanelle away.
Please watch it please I love it so much
I like it better than the first one

Unfortunately, Catholics who don't actually *practice* the faith often get the headlines or end up traumatizing people, so I'm *really* glad this movie is out there to bring light and laughter.
Maggie Smith plays the Mother Superior nun. I first saw her in the 1981 movie Clash of the Titans. She was great as the Goddess of the sea.
Great pick!!! Please react to Sister Act 2!!! Sooo good. Lauryn Hill and Whoopi together is so good!
Please do Sister Act 2 ,the songs are wayyy better. My favorite one!!
Love this movie! It’s definitely one of those classic late 80’s/early 90’s big-premise movies and Whoopi is such a star it’s timeless 🙌🏼
I watched this all the time when I was little and definitely did not catch all the adult jokes/references til I revisited 😆 story of my life!
I really like the film especially for the music and I had no idea Carrie Fisher was involved which is really cool.
Sister act 2 is even better with all the same love.
I loved this movie so much.. I used to play the soundtrack in my office
You have to watch Sister Act 2 as well! One of the rare times a sequel is better than the original in my opinion…
The sequel "Sister Act 2" I liked even better as it centered around teens.
Until hearing your introduction, I never realized how much this had in common with The music Man
Robert Miranda, who plays Joey here, plays a not dissimilar character in a movie I highly recommend, "Midnight Run". The character's name is...Joey. Is he the same person? Who can say?
13:49 - That's a good point! One often overlooked by the esthetics of it all. But I guess that's THE point: to do it sneakily. 😉
9:13 - You can expect more of those moments. 😉
Also: love your laugh. 🥰
18:25 - Yeah, I can see that. Well, I mean, I LITERALLY just did! 🤣
The second one is just as fantastic if not better.
If you haven't watched the sequel yet you definitely should!! I still prefer the original but it's worth it for a young Lauryn Hill alone
I hadn't even thought about this movie in years, I loved it then, and I still do today. Great job and great movie.
Always loves Sister Act so much, greag reaction.
Another iconic movie from 1992 is 'Death Becomes Her'. A fantasy comedy from Robert Zemeckis starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn.
Apparently Sister Act 3 is in the the works.
During your live stream you said your hair looks ugly in this video. I love the way it looks. I haven't seen you look bad in any video, I think you always look amazing.
Wow, that's a throw back to my childhood ! I remember we recorded on VHS and watched it from time to time. It was pretty fun :)
👍👍👍👍👍👍 shanelle your family's definitely in the MOB,,, 😂😂😅😅
You should check out a career retrospective of Mary Wickes. She’s such a legend! She’s the first choir director in this movie.
I remember her from mostly playing smart aleck maids and housekeepers in the sixties, but I also have seen her as a smart aleck teen in the forties. She was great.
I am relatively young, so I mainly remember her as the smart aleck maid from the Father Dowling Mysteries.
the Actress who played the choir director is Mary Wicks . This isn't the first time she has played a nun.
Back in the 60's there was 2 movies about a Catholic Girls School. in which Mary Wicks played a Nun .
The Movies were called The Trouble with Angels and Where Angels Go Trouble Follows.
Sister Act 2
Congratulations on 50K Subs!!! This is literally the best reaction channel ever!!
Impressed that she didn't think Fontella Bass was Aretha.
For a while around this time, Whoopie was getting into movies. Another good one form this time is Jumping jack Flash. These got her her spot in Star Trek: TNG.
