    Great video - those 3 words - spark plug gap! Thank you.
    I have a 2008 Passat 2.0 and I was ready to sell it in 2010 while still covered under the "certified pre-owned warranty". Cylinder 1 was the most common problem I dealt with and VW fixed it 3 times under warranty. I experience higher than normal oil consummation - 1/2 - 3/4 quart between oil changes. VW told me that's normal for turbo-equipped engines. I was fed up and contacted a Lemon Law attorney and sued VW Corp. for breach of contract in the amount of 6.5K - I pocketed $4K while the attorney got his $2.5K.
    My engine light is on today, again, with the infamous P0301 code. I never thought to check the spark plug gap on such a well designed engine. On my way to the garage now. Many thanks, Charles.

      I hope that does it for you. Good luck! The oil consumption seems normal with these too. I wouldnt be concerned with it. Mine is running strong today. 204k miles.

    Have the exact same car. Problem is these engines are oil burners. Buy the spark plug + coil kit from ECS Tuning and replace them once. Everytime it starts misfiring just remove them and clean both plugs and coils with electrical cleaner. Problem solved. Been doing this for 80k miles and still solves this issue.

    You're 99% correct. Yes the plug gap is important. Especially on turbo engines. That said, it's not high velocity air blowing out the spark. Spark blowout is a bit of a misnomer. Fuel and air are actually insulators. As more fuel and air are fed into the cylinder, he density of the material inside the cylinder naturally increases. This increases the insulating effect and thus more energy is required to jump the spark plug gap.

    It is sometimes the coils. Sometimes the plugs and sometimes the crancase vent module. Easy test is to open the oil cap and observe excessive vacuum. Coils and plugs are maintenance items anyway. Cheers.

      I do have suction coming from my oil cap and dipstick, could this be that module ?

    Thanks for the video. I own a 2007 A4 Quattro and it has a 2.0T FSI engine and it’s misfiring right now. It’s done this before and I replaced coil packs and spark plugs and it was fixed or so I thought. I’ll check the spark plug gaps on mine and hopefully that’ll save me some time and money

    Large spark plug gaps cause high current demand and higher wear on coil packs until failure or poor performance. New coil packs can disguise badly gapped plugs hence the problem seems to go away and then comes back. If a coil pack fails then you must ask why before installing another one that may also fail soon. Thanks for the video.
    Essentially a tighter plug gap is required for all boosted engines vs a larger gap for normally aspirated.

    the voltage required to jump a gap increases as air pressure increases. it probably runs just fine when it's not under load, but add boost and there isn't enough voltage. at least that's what i've always heard about needing smaller gap on turbo engines.

    Thanks for the insight. I just picked up a 2006 Passat 2.0. Looks like the same engine. We're you experiencing oil loss with this problem?

    • @Supercrewchief
      @Supercrewchief  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grant Gundlach I did have oil loss but was unrelated to this problem. My oil lost was due to a faulty PCV valve.

      Grant Gundlach also, my car has nearly 200k miles on it and uses ~1 quart of oil every couple thousand miles. It has not gotten worse and is acceptable to me. Keep in mind that turbocharged engines operate under higher pressures than naturally aspirated and will have a tendency to use more oil. As far as I'm concerned that is a price for higher performance and not necessarily a concern as long as it is not getting worse. Keep in mind that the oil lost can come from several other areas in these engines aside from worn piston rings and is not necessarily a sign of poor engine health.

      reduce spark plug gap to .020" and give that a shot

    So how do you gap the spark plug? Sorry I missed the video. I have my VW Mk6 and it has alot of misfires especially when I clock past 3000 RPM
