However, if the DAC implementation is as good as the dongle that came with my Asus Zenbook (laptop) which I use on a daily basis, it should be more than great!

I'd rather have a decent IEM or something like a HD58X instead. But the problem is that 3.5mm jacks are becoming rarer by the day & even the ones that do have it don't match up to LG!

I've started noting down the songs Joshua uses in his vids apart from the ones I already know (like Mountains or The Mole-basically Hans stuff)

man LG had soo much bloatware and useless stock apps that were soo clunky, so it's nice to have Sony looking into all the refinements we want and need. Sony seems to offer as much tech as possible in their devices so I hope their phone category BLOWS UP, and that turns to R&D. Also Sony develop technology and are market leaders in certain categories. Apple for example only make the chips from ARM, that's it. Sony would use that market share/position far better, so exciting times!

The problem with these companies is that they don't optimize the chips that they have. There are plenty of DAPs (or phones) that have the exact same chips that the LG phones had in their "quad DAC" but all of them do poorly in comparison (particularly the cheap Chinese ones). Just plastering a chip on there and just advertising that isn't good enough, it needs to have partnerships with professional companies to optimize and tune it. There are entire departments focused on this. It's what LG did for years with Meridian and Bang & Olufsen being involved in the process.

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@E. O. A little harsh I would say, basically its nothing but a lock out scheme, if you want to hear in the higher bit depth and frequency, you have to pay up, it adds nothing to the music, but it locks out the higher quality from those that do not pay up.
so it's a profit making machine, and many people love it and pay for it, because on some platforms like Tidal that is the only way to unlock the higher resolution files, it dopes not make them worse or better, it just empties your pockets.
having said that the software versions are cheap in many cases $4 and that's it, or if your device already has the MQA unlocking feature cool, and of course hackers get around it.
Unfortunately with software many companies are doing this, for instance Tesla has self driving features that are locked already on the car, you own, but will only unlock them if you pay.
Many cpu's and gpu's are actually the same as the next model up, but hardware or software disabled from running like that top model.
That is the new profit model along with renting by subscription, or buying a game, but then to get the features you want you have to pay up, so that app store game for free, can end up costing well over a hundred dollars.

I have lg v30, lgv50 and Sony Xperia 1ii. I use etymotic er4xr and er4sr. My conclusion is no fight, lg still beats Sony hands down. You can easily tell from the first 10 seconds that the lg quad dac and op amp creates a volume of air for all the details in the recording to be heard. Compared against the lg, Sony Xperia sounded very flat to me. On less than stellar earphones, Sony sound good enough but no way they can replace dedicated dacs like what the lg was able to do for me. I still keep my lg for music listening.

I just got it, it's so amazing, snappy and clean. Very classy phone. I think I will finally ditch my iPhone for this, it's so good!!
Doesn't overheat, battery is very well managed, screen is just out of this world and the form factor makes it a breeze to use (though keyboard is big so I don't miss a key!). The form factor also allows for more content when scrolling on twitter/facebook etc.
Camera is good, I don't understand the hate. You do need to understand some photography theory though, but the auto is also good enough. Everything looks natural which is why I was seeking to leave Apple, following latest iPhone releases. I'm not here to take photos of pitch dark scenes that don't even inspire me to photograph in the first place. I have proper long exposure if I wanted to get impressed. But real world, I want dark pics, as dark as my eyes can see. Look back at old pictures and see how many times you clench your teeth at badly AI modified pics of your precious memories, I hate that.

I love front facing stereo speakers. I have a Pixel 3 XL now and though it's in mint condition, sounds good and has a great screen. My battery life is waning as time goes on. Also I'm stuck with android 12, but that's not horrible.
I'd like to upgrade to the mark 3, but I hate buying used and new they're still outside my budget.
The Sony has the same screen layout like Pixel that I like. And the front facing stereo speakers truly draw me, but I paid under 3 hundred new for my 3 XL, and it has almost all the features of the sony. High resolution screen, top processor, for its time, and those speakers. So I find it hard to justify almost 700 for a 3 year old phone.

The battery life is a big turn off. That 4k 120hz kinda works against it. The screens too small for it to really matter and it absolutely kills that big battery they put in it. Plus the processor benchmarks struggle against a 700$ iphone 12? Not even the Iphone 13, like years old models of iphones it struggles to compete against. I love my 550$ dunu sa6 but the 10$ dongle works fine. Sounds almost identical to a 2000$ desktop setup when I plug in with 4.4. Maybe if you wanted to bring open backs out in public it would be a good option but I'm just struggling to see the value for iems. Though that's just my use case for casual listening at work and during transit.
Plus the reports of overheating with youtube and other casual browsing use seems concerning. Snapdragons are cool but they aren't implemented well here.
Androids still have the easy EQ advantage vs the app store though. The camera also seems like a decent reason to splurge, but the video definitely goes to apple from what I can tell.

Loved the review but for many here saying "this phone is too expensive", a good alternative is the ASUS ROG Phone 5. Compared to my old LG V40, the ASUS sounds better and has more power too. I can run my Sennheiser HD560S on it with a lot of power to spare. It makes my Argon Mk3s decent volume altho not quite high enough but hey, they`re Argons lol. I`d say my phone gets to about 85-90% of what I would consider the ideal listening volume on my Argons, I think that`s pretty impressive for a phone. And I got mine for only $650 before taxes on Ebay. It even has LDAC in it too. Currently using it with the new Song XM4 wireless earbuds.
As a phone it has some great features like the sony like not having a hole punch camera in the screen, a 144hz refresh rate, great stereo speakers for a phone, and a monster of a battery at 6,000 milliamps.
Would love to see you compare the 2 phones Josh!

I have the LG V60, which I use with the USB audiophile appSony actually for a time took their headphone jack away, but now have brung it back and are one of the only ones still to have one.
But then again when it comes to phone LG was always the one that got no respect even though they were the first all touch all screen smartphone, long before the iphone, and had bluetooth and downloadable apps, at the start that took a second iphone to do.

The main issue with Sony Xperia 3 is that Sony has conflicting interests. They have their own DAPs and for that reason, won't include the same chips or work that LG did on their phones. It is unlikely for Sony to offer the same and other companies don't bother to care about the details of audio (they will throw the DAC on there but they won't optimize it at all).
It was a good review but it's a reminder of what we lost with LG.

The only area that could use improvement, is the superuser-friendliness. When you're producing a smartphone for a pro user (a single device for pro users across different fields of pro-ism; i,e. photography, audio, video consumption, gaming.. etc.), you'd expect that rooting/superuser area to be more lenient and friendlier, than it currently is. No need to follow Samsung in that regard, be your own self as you already did with this device, Sony!

I just received the Xperia 1 Mk. IV and I don’t have much of an IE device; just some planars like the Sundara., and I’m very much underwhelmed with the Sony. My iPhone 13 with dongle can at least drive the Sundara ‘somewhat’ but the Xperia, no way. Also the onboard loudspeakers are worthless. From an audio point of view, I really don’t understand what all the hype is about…

Can you make a video about ultra budget headphones/IEMs?
I'm interested in your personal picks for those like me in third world countries.
Stay healthy and cheers from Philippines!

I've heard good things about the QKZ VK4 at 5 to 10 bucks.
To get something better you probably have to step up to the 30$ Blon bl 03

I've been a Samsung Note fanboy since note 4 (2014) But the new models don't have a 3.5 anymore 😭 and I hate dongles with grate passion! So this phone is probably my next step. But I'll wait 1 year for the price drop ;)

You wouldn't regret it. I also went from Samsung to Sony. Only thing I miss is app shortcut in lockscreen
