Good Video. Perhaps in a communal effort people could stick in comments good 2nd hand refurbished suggestions at
LG V series are good for audio Quad DACs and now not longer being made so they are going cheap. The V20 is the only one with removable battery though
@@123benley That's not true. The v20 was the most recent with a removable batter but the v10 had one as well.
@@exturkconner v10 didn't have a quad dac I belive though did it? Only an amp after that they added quad dac and amp to v20 to v60 look up it's specs
@@123benley Yeah that is true. However it pretty much amounts to the same. The Ess Sabre dac amp combo in the v10 is essentially just as good a performer as the quad dac in the other units. The v20 was also tuned differently depending on the region it was purchased in. Some version were tuned by LG where others were tuned by Bang and Olefson.
V60 is sublime with HD 650s headphones using power amp and EQ. Gives most daps a run for there money 1tb SD card 256gb phone your golden
But I've also half a dozen modded ipods that are at a TV with zero red iems or a dock into my Amp so they sound great can get 24 bit 48khz digital out through 30 pin and the right dock that has its own dac built into it fed to a DAC Amp or combo avr sounds great
I also have portable amps for ipods too
LG phones are best for this. Because it can drive up to 600 ohms and has a saber deck that's a the significant step up from the one with Sony. But another option could be a new budget phone like the OnePlus n30 is 60 bucks from Metro PCS ( well technically it's 20 bucks but you have to buy $40 plan for a month). It's locked for 6 months but that's really not an issue if you're not putting a SIM card in it anyway. And it has a headphone jack, and expandable storage which as you mentioned are basically the two key features here
but i want it compact though lots of lg phones are very big. esp the flagship ones that still ahas a jack
@@jojoenathanAre the G8 or G8x too big for you?
LG G5 with the audio module sounds perfect. I found the phone for around $200, but I can't find the module
@@jojoenathan The old G6+ can maybe be found at least in the US, those should have the 32bit quad dac and wireless charging, the regular US model G6 only had a 32bit with standard dac. European models never received the quad dac G6, nor did they have wireless charging. And then newer models like the G7 thinq and G8 thinq had the famous 32bit quad dac
LG v30
I’ve been using my old iPhone 5 precisely as a dedicated audio player. Still has the headphone jack, has Bluetooth support and the battery and display are relatively easy to replace if needed (have done so already myself)
I have ipad 1 just for the sake of having it
if i’m not mistaken the iphone 5s received a significant DAC upgrade over the 5, that remained of course only until the 6s/SE. I still use my iphone SE as a dedicated music player, thanks to that headphone jack, tiny size, and 128gb of storage. 99gb is taken up with music 😅
Nice idea to use an old phone for a DAP and always better to reuse than buy new or recycle if you can.
Yep just slap on a battery case, plug in a USB-C dongle DAC-AMP (Hidizs S9 Pro, Fiio KA3, and Cayin RU6/RU7 are all very good at their respective prices) 👍
Yep this is exactly what I will be doing with my old phone, I tend to get distracted at work with my main phone, where I open Reddit and start doom scrolling or watching TH-cam, so turning an old phone with only a media player and no other distracting apps is precisely what I need.
Good video thanks!
I was recently considering the Hiby R4 but then settled with using my old Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with the Hiby app to manage my music.
The phone has 128gb storage plus the capability for 2 sd micro cards (as no sim is required). Headphone jack, Dolby atmos and a decent battery.
How does it support 2 micro sd cards?
@altaccount the phone can take two physical (sim or sd) cards. They are both added into the same slot as the tray can accommodate 2 cards side by side
@@hotcupofbeans that's so cool
I always thought that phones only came with a hybrid sim tray
Thats why I am keeping my lg g7 thinq
Old LG and Sony phones do great, one with intergrated DAC and one with DSEE HX
whats a DAC.. I have an LG aristo 2 that Im gonna use as an mp3 player, whats a good program for mp3 playback. Im 54 and kinda new to this
@@fredjones5719 DAC is short for Digital to Analog Converter, basically a dedicated processor for converting your music files (digital) to hearable sounds (analog). Usually musics would sound better with it
what do u think about zperia xz?
@wendriloliveira5345 pretty decent if you're going to use it as secondary device, but one thing to note that its battery life is not impressive
i used a samsung s7 edge with lineageos for this, but i upgraded it to a mi 10t lite for the better dac (ofc still using lineageos)
My LG V20, with 1TB card full of flacs, dsd files, and a 6400 mAh Perfine battery is my dap of choice. I'll take the Pepsi challenge against any Sony experia phones. 😂
I’m really thinking about getting a V20. How does the DAC hold up for 2024?
Where do you get the Flacs bro? I'm always trying so hard to find them but I only get them individually
@@TeitusCurrently still rocking one and its(Phenomenal) prestige, clean, tight musicality. It is a better DAC
Where did you got thebatterie haha
@@koala101100Qobuz is one of the leading high res music stores. You get a lot of format options, including FLAC.
Great video. Thanks for your input. It is indeed a good way to give another use to discarded cellphones.
i have zenfone8 with me as spare phone.thinking of get rid of it.suprisingly this phone has great codec and great built in equalizer comes with 3.5mm jack great dap coupled with Tidal.going to be great media player plus it has small footprint
Using my old Galaxy S10e for this. Coupled with a Hiby USB C DAC ans IEMs.
To simplify the interface and remove the temptation of apps wanting attention, I'm using Productivity Launcher. My flac files plus streaming services... It's a good option.
I just bought the moondrop chu 2, I was wondering if they're a good match for the S10e, I already have a Galaxy A31 with a headphone jack but the S10e has a better 3.5 mm audio out
A bit overkill but I'm using a unihertz Tank 3 for a DAP, because it runs android 14. And it has a month long battery life on standby.
Thanks for the inspiration. I bought a AT&T locked Samsung Galaxy A70 and I'm from Spain where they don't use this kind of frequencies. It has outdated firmware from 2022, it has 3.5mm jack which supports my in ear monitors and a MicroSD slot. I don't plan on using a SIM or E-SIM card with it but I plan to use it in my Mercedes W201 with a Kenwood stereo unit with aftermarket speakers and since I have options to either use it with the jack or bluetooth, I'm planning on using the captain jack in order to play music in higher quality.
I paid like 20€ for this phone and it's like brand new except for the only scatches being inside the walls of the USB C port.
I'm using a vivo y21l as my offline music player *back when vivo is about camera AND MUSIC * and definitely a great change with it's own music player 👌 ❤
Kept my Moto g7 power for the FM radio if I want the radio on at work with my cheap in ear headphones. Sacrilege while discussing high quality audio I know.
but practical
An old phone plus a cheap amp like the $80 Fosi sk01 with tone controls is a great combo
Will be switching to a new s25. Can i use my s22+ as a DAP?
Excellent. Right now Im using a new budget or mid range Oppo. I dont like headphones and connect to a Fosi amp and then to passive budget good old Samsung speakers.
I literally bought a lot of 2 LG v20's a week or two ago JUST for the cheapo, yet awesome, DACs in em 🍻 ..figured that removable battery will go a long way in longevity. Sorry fiio devices, but that's the hill you'll die on 🤷
Especially if you can grab some perfine batteries they go up to 1000mah
@@123benley you mean 10 000 mah
the new fiio jm21 drains battery like crazy
@@casull2041 damn 🫣 seems like I made a dandy choice then 💪 ..thanks for letting me know!
What is the app you use for offline music?
"I want to get an used Galaxy S10e and use it as a DAP, both for the convenience of having a high-quality 3.5mm jack and USB-C. However, there's an issue with Android where it simply downsamples the audio to 48kHz. Even though I'm not very demanding with audio, I would like to use the maximum quality that the phone provides. Is it a good option to use the S10e as a DAP? Or is there a way to bypass this Android limitation?
Thanks for the tip!
I've been using Galaxy S9 for the same purpose. Just wanted to know your opinion if it makes a noticible difference to switch to LG V30 or Xperia.
Thanks.
im watching this on newly bought xperia 10 vi, which still have both the sd slot and headphone jack...
so does anybody know what to do with android 7 asus ?
And, don't forget to use one of player apps that makes your phone look like a cassette player Walkman :)
Does an s10e serve to this purpose?
I bought a LG V40 one year ago and I'm thinking of installing a custom ROM (Lineage OS). Will the Quad DAC still work if I do this?
Most likely not, since Lineage was explicitly created without considering working with a dedicated DAC. Therefore, if you want your V40 to retain acceptable functionality as an audio player, it's best to leave it with the official ROM.
@nonenothing5009 Appreciate the reply. I guess this phone will be stuck at Android 10 then. Haha
I've a V30 and a V50. On both of the running Lineageos. On both the Quad Dac is working flawlessly. Go for it!
Any other phones you recommend here in the uk?
They can push more resistance through the headphone port, huh? Haha
Ahhh what I meant was they can push power to headphones with more resistance
Just to clarify, the flux capacitors that feed the electro-audio conversion drivers have a lot of Ohms….beam me up Scott ;)
I use old phones for this very reason and as a remote control for spotify connect on my streamers the one thing I would say is most phones don't have a very good dac on board, so purchasing a desktop dac/amp makes a huge improvement available through amazon from about £50 upwards for a fiio e10 or a fiio k7 £190 brings your audio experience to a whole new level I'm now the owner of over 20 amps! But seriously, I'd advise anyone to try this route for serious audio quality for their desktop
Still have my 6s plus
i have s10e is this good for iem?
Well I'm kinda looking for this exact same thing but I want to control the music from another device. Basically using the old phone as an audio receiver.
Anyone know how to do that in an easier way. Without many third-party apps and such.
You can use dlna software for that, I used to do that for movie and TV series streaming to my tv using pc media and controlling it through my phone, but technically, you can also do that with music and using phones only, if you want. Bubbleupnp was the app I usually used for that, it works for local network, and even though I never tried to set it up for that, it probably can also run through the internet as well. If it doesn't work you can try using a multimedia server and client software which is what I currently use. Like kodi or jellyfin, at least jellyfin can stream your content through the web if set up correctly, kodi probably can as well, I'm not sure, never used it for that,I only used it for local network streaming. All of the softwares mentioned are free.
I have xperia 1 iii and ROG 5s, all i can say is 3.5mm headphone jack doesnt sound amazing compared to ROG 5s which have saber dac
What is exactly phone is that
No discernable difference in blutooth. Bluetooth is the way to go. Many videos on this.
I tried to use my old phones, but they seem to be very slow, get very hot fast and restart nonstop - which makes them kinda unusable
5:23 what are those 2 apps to the right of spotify
Aimp and plex
Mm, I legit was like do i mod my iPod or do I shove a micro sd card in my old motorola droid razr? I miss using it so much. Super thin, long battery, aux jack!
Sony smartphones are still good for music people
Good video
I think this video is outdated since Android new versions stopped resampling? Right?
I sold my iPod 5 for 85 bucks and repurposed my old Pocophone as a dap - better sound quality, flac support and plexamp support for free.
Oh and installed lineageOS on it.
Get a POCO F5. It's got a new processor and HiRes certified, sounds better than Dongle DACs.
or use spotify but great video
IDK man, but if you want to enjoy quality sound on a smartphone, you need a USB-C DAC anyway... So missing a 3.5mm jack is no issue here....
Not if it's an LG G or V series as they have quite good integrated DACs
@@cjit26 i said most, not all, most phone dac suck, or sw manipulate the music
Nah dac is useless. Jack audio > dac
I have an old Honor X8 that I use as DAP. Honestly can't tell the difference between my FiiO USB C DAC and the 3.5mm jack on the phone itself.
However, I can hear the difference if I use my IEM on my quite recent Lenovo laptop's 3.5mm jack versus the fiio dac. The fiio sounds much louder and "fuller".
@@freemasonry666the audio comes from the built-in DAC before going to the headphone jack. External DACs can be tiny for phones.
thanks to apple removing headpone jack
Why limit yourself to a single DAC? I prefer not having a built in headphone jack with its tiny amp and DAC and using any combination of my choice.
I have a pixel 7a. Rubbish
A LG v60 LG v20 just awaiting a 10.000mah battery for my LGv20 both LG have 1tb SD cards quad DACs.
I feel I'm winning in life lol as I also have multiple 5.5ipods and 7th gen iPods with iflash quads and 2200mah batteries .
IEMs and HD650s that work on all of what I've listed bar the pixel 7a. Unless I go dongle DAC
0:53 That's the point and their function, ya dingus. This smartphone trend needs to die, fast. There's no good reason we've adopted this "Jack of all trades, master of none" mentality with smartphones. They can do so much but literally don't excel in 1 single thing better than their dedicated counterpart (Example: I have a Sony Xperia 1 and a Sony a6400 - if I want to take photos, I'll pick up my a6400. Why use the Xperia for an inferior result?)
We need to start going back to support machines/devices that are Masters of One, not a mediocre jack of all trades - but it's soOoOo cooooool because the screen is touchyyy. Touch screens are a 2005 gimmick that needs to die 5 years ago tbh.
Push more Ohms.....
PLP
I have a redmi note 8 phone. It is nothing crazy but has a headphone jack. If i wanted to buy a new phone today, its mostly do not have a headphone jack. Much heavier and bigger than my phone, therefore inconvenient. Thicker than a brick.I need to buy a new adapter if I want to buy a compact one. Their camera bezels are huge, looks like an abomination. Has no sense of proportion. Unnecessarily expensive. It feels like phones from 5 years ago is more advanced than phones of today.
Where to download hi res music for free
soulseek, nicotine+
Fiildo.apk.....Enjoy
Soulseek is my fav desktop
I'd mention, connsider getting at least a dongle dac for better audio quality on an old phone. Regular 3.5 jacks on most phones are sucky
Or just buy a dac?
A lot of incorrect information in this video.
apple dongle works just fine 🤷♀️ yall doin too much 🤣
The Apple dongle contains a Cirrus Logic DAC. People who know way more than me about audio equipment say it’s a very good piece of hardware.
"Old phones make AMAZING...." This is just so stupid. Old = better now?? Why don't we just keep going even older, further in the past, and take it full circle and just stick to HiRes DAPs (aka MP3 players).
IMO, new phones are not necessarily better. Manufacturers have been scamming us for several years now, most new phones are mostly cost reduced versions of previous models. The actual audio chips probably haven’t improved in over 10 years! Unless you’re trying to game or really need the latest camera, old phones are probably even better.

audiophile don't know if viper4android is exist
With an old phone (not too old) you dont need to spend much and have dedicated player. Just the right software (like poweramp) and the flac files. He didnt say old phones were better than new phones.
Only downside is that security patches are gone for older devices
use a custom rom
Does it really matters for this usage tho? Especially if you just use it as an offline DAP playing local files
