I bought last year's model (but 15') with an i7 and an MX150, I wish someone would review the model with the Ryzen 7, that one must be sick, specially because of the additional graphics horsepower
Been eying this laptop for a while, I remember the older model for this had horrible battery life so this is a massive improvement, nice review! Do you have any plans to review the new HP Envy 13t that comes with an MX350? This newer model has a 65wh battery, wheras previous models had a 50wh battery, meaning the performance improvement in battery life will be really interesting.
Great review Andrew. It's a shame HP only offer one SKU here in Spain - Ryzen 5 with 8gb ram and the 300nit screen. In the UK they do the R7 with 16gb of ram but still only 300 nit screen. Nonetheless, I think I'll be getting the R7 version when I go back to the UK to see family in 2 weeks.
Hi Andrew, I was wondering whether you know how big is the difference between the integrated graphics in the Ryzen 7 4700u and the Nvidia MX350? ASUS has the UM433IQ with Ryzen 4700 and Nvidia graphics so it seems like a better deal than this. Any thoughts?
I think it was in Just Josh's video about the Asus laptop where he mentioned that Adobe programs are not optimized for AMD's graphics card, but are for Intels graphics cards. So when exporting a video in Premier Pro, he got an error on the AMD. So if you use Adobe tools, do some more research.
Really love all the new AMD ultra books that are coming to the market but why all of them only seem to have 8 gigabytes of RAM ? Are companies worried that a highly specced AMD laptop would just kill all the intel counterparts ?

The truth is, both Intel and AMD are garbage for laptop gaming, as is the concept itself - these devices were never ment for any serious processing such as modern gaming

16:9 really suuucks is really only good for video,try put this 2 in 1 in portrait and read a PDF....is ridiculous,3:2 is the way,the only good thing surfaces really have....or at least 16:10,16:9 is good only for tvs
Great review, just ordered one. I don't know why anyone would pick the more expensive Spectre X360 over this (unless they really needed TB3 or an OLED screen). And the amazing thing is that HP's Envy line is supposed to be one step below their Spectre line.
Ive use spectre 2020 with FHD option for everyday light office use. if i have to choose again I still choose spectre over envy based on the design alone. not everyone need to squeeze all the the juice on their ultrabook. I just want to ultrabooks with elegant looks which sometimes comes handy as ice breakers small talk in office meeting.
AMD is killing it - I got a Matebook with AMD 5 - 16 GB of RAM & 512 Pcie - it fly by the tasks - of course not for gaming i use It only for my work - Awesome keyboard and fast booting - Really really good for students and business pro- I travel a lot and its very impressive.
After I decided to replace my MacBook Pro with a better laptop, since I experienced NO innovation with Apple for the past 6 years, I did a very long research in order to find a good replacement product. Then I found the HP ENVY x360 RYZEN5 with a 1 TB SSD. - To make it short: After nearly two months of using the new HP, I have never been more impressed and happy working with this laptop. It has the greatest design and the best performance for that price! (I don't play games, therefore I didn't require a top processor). - I made the best purchase decision ever! All I did was kicking out the Microsoft OUTLOOK 365 software. It is the worst MS software ever, although I have worked with OUTLOOK for over 20 years without any problems! But the 365 version ist just crap! I replaced it with a much better one: MAILBIRD !! It looks and feels a bit like OUTLOOK but much better and excellent in its performance !!! I can recommend that to everyone.
Excellent presentation and technical analysis . Agree x360 Ryzen 4500U is highly competitive both price , performance. I was not sure of AMD 4500U as opposed to Intel i5, but seems AMD has now hit the bar. Top notch review as always :) Any plans to review the Ideapad S540 (AMD and 16:10 display)? The Zenbook 14 with the MX350 is interesting too but some reviews claim it throttles the CPU down to 10 watts while others claim it runs fine. It has a single shared heat pipe to cool both so I'm assuming the former is true but I hope you can review it to validate.
A C yeah, it’s a wonderful machine, I’m no expert though but comparing to the one I had previously this’s marvellous. I’ve access to some computers at work and other places as well and I think this one is great. Now I can draw some stuff at ease, I like doing cartoons and the like to tell a story and since I got this computer it’s making my life easier.

It gives me a seamless user interface, the graphics are awesome, the battery ‘life’ has been excellent I can use it for hours without charge and many more things you can do you name it and so I think it’s a great buy & maybe the latest version will be more immersive. This laptop hits the sweet spot. Good performance nice display all day battery life all in a quality light weight chassis .You can get laptops with higher performance & better screen but don't expect battery life anywhere near this.
You have 90k subscribers. It's really easy to turn on auto captions so people can read, it helps me when I want to watch videos in a quiet place. Just a tip.

Its a great device. Got the 4500u model as soon as it was showing on HP's page. Replaced the ssd with a 1tb nvme one. It ticks all boxes for me - nearly.. Its compact, excellent build quality, freesync display, good audio. Great device. Only one complaint is that they could have made the cooler and thermals better. (Also has single heatpipe). It is fine when running at 15w (temps max around 60c) but at 25w, temps reach 85c+ when on load (and this is based on ambient room temp of around 20c). Thankfully with the efficiency of renoir, you can practically get same gaming performance and better at 12-15w as to what you would on a 3500u unit at 25w

I really do not leave a review for some reason, but leave it for other users. After using it for 3 days, write it under heat. The seller only asks the HP Customer Center to inquire about the buyer's inquiries without using the product, and the answer is not correct. Windows Hello cannot be recognized. I live because of the two-in-one crab tablet mode, but when I use it as a tablet and enter the power saving mode, I have to unfold it back to the laptop and press the power button to wake up again. This is really really annoying. I want to throw a laptop. The guy who designed the product didn't even benchmark the laptops of other companies and designed them, or did they use prototypes? At least the keyboard doesn't work, the power button doesn't work, or even the power button doesn't work. I have to go back to my laptop and press the power button. I get annoyed whenever I do. The keyboard backlight stays on, or when you press a key in a dark environment, the light turns on for about 5 seconds and then turns off again. I want to hit a guy who designed this too. He doesn't know why the backlight is there. Use Samsung's light recognition automatically, so it stays on when dark. During use, it is hung occasionally, and because of apps such as jump start or beggar, it eats a lot of CPU, it cannot be removed from the program removal, and it must be removed from the app. Fever is severe, and the sound of the fan is the sound of taking off the aircraft. It's the worst laptop ever except for performance and fluid motion. Samsung, LG, Lenovo, etc. There is no charge limit function to protect the battery. I'm regretting hitting the ground why I waited for a 2700 one into 4700U and bought this product. I don't leave a review if I can, but if I use this for 3 days in tablet mode, I think I will get cancer. Bottom Line: Never buy someone to use in tablet mode. Cancer jam... I tried to break it, but I decided to endure selling it as a used one.

You know Andrew, I just bought the 15.6inch version with ryzen 7 4700u, 1TB ssd,8gb, pen and dongle for $1099.00 Canadian.. Prety good. I was tempted with the 13inch version but at 59 years of age my eyesight isn't getting any better.. I will say that it's prety heavy(comming in at 1940g.). For me, at that price, still a great deal. Ho. Btw, the memory is socketted and upgradable. 👍

Only had it for 2 days now, didn't get to try out some graphically intense games yet. But from my daily usage it performs and feels very nice. Doesn't get too hot running in HP's recommended mode. (Have the 16 GB option)
I just ordered this laptop with the 15.6 inch screen. I was tempted to order a gaming laptop, but after seeing reviews for the Ryzen 5 4500u, I figured it was not needed. I am not a serious gamer but I watched this cpu play games & it is way more than decent even without a dedicated graphics card. I got mine for $599 at Walmart online & free shipping. I did a lot of research & this was the best value that I could find. I would have liked a bit more RAM, but then the price jumps, but 8 should be fine for me.

This has amazing display (I got 400 nits model), good speed and battery life of around 9 hours which is enough to keep me going during an average work day. Also, my Samsung galaxy note 10 syncs seamlessly with this machine using 'link to windows'. Great going HP!
What are you looking for? Taking notes or digital art? Note taking I would recommend the adonit note+ for $55 (cheaper alternative is the adonit pro 4 which works better in my opinion but some people don’t like the tip) and for drawing the regular adonit note for $39. Lenovo has an amazing digital pen but idk if it’ll work for an hp device
Is HP trying to pull a fast on by supplying you with a screen that has over 400nits and generally very good sRGB, while as a consumer if I try and order one with a 4500u it will have crappy 250nits displays with dismal sRGB. To be fair, nothing for $600 has a good screen but I feel we are being bait and switched by HP supplying a review test unit with a display that isn't what you get when you order as a consumer. I would love HP to comment on this.
I would just recommend everyone be really careful viewing reviews vs. viewing what you order. I had to really dig on HP's website to find what's going on with the screen. Most retailers are selling the 15" version of the Envy X360, and the 15" doesn't offer any display options. You get a crappy 250nits display with terrible sRGB. Honestly I wouldn't expect anything better for the roughly $600-650 they sell for, but just be aware if you want a better display you have to actively search for a 14" version which has 3 different screen offerings. The worst offers 300nits the best offers 1000nits(for +110). If you are only using the laptop indoors for school or business apps this probably isn't a big deal. If you are going to use it to watch movies while lying in bed and what some color accuracy you might want to consider specifically searching for a 14" version with a better display, if if you use it outside on your deck, even in the shade, you are still going to want more than 250nits.
I like your review style 👍🏽. Next laptop review, please check if they support HDR. Try out the video you play for display testing for HDR support right here on TH-cam while browsing on Microsoft Edge ( Chromium version ). If possible, give Netflix a HDR try as well. Not sure why Intel should be worried. There are 20 good intel models for 2 good AMD models for laptops. If you want anything more than FHD screen, you have to buy Intel anyway. Keep in mind that most people (and I mean technically challenged people) think any Intel processor is better than any AMD processor.

Hello I have heard of problem with HP envy x360 .Its hindge gets uprooted after a span of 2-3 years with old models of 2018 and 2019 .Does HP 2020 model has same problem with it or they resolved the problem please replay

Hi. Thank you for this interesting review. No HDMI = no external monitor connectivity? Or, is that doable through USB-C? That would require using the barrael type connector power supply rather then PD over USB-C. I am thinking to get this one for the wife to use. She is your typical average user. Mostly browsing, video playback on TH-cam occasional voice chat, all the routine stuff. I was thinking to get her there Ryzen 7 model, partly for when it comes to resell time, it would have higher resell potential. But on the other hand, I wonder if I would be better off to just get the Ryzen 5 considering her modest needs. For myself, I am more of a power user and am considering the HP Omen 15 or 17". I want discrete graphics as well. My most demand use case would be BlackMagic's Davinci Resolve for video NLE production, thus I want the more powerful machine and dGPU. I can do without thunderbolt for now because that model can handle two internal M.2 SSDs which I would upgrade to 2TB x2. Since USB4 is around the corner that will be a converence of TB and USB into one protocol so I can wait for that one in the next upgrade. If possible, can you do a review of the HP Omen 15 and/or 17" model? Acer also has some powerful considerations coming out as well as Lenovo, but would be happy to see just the HP Omen for now. I am undecided in choosing between the 11th gen i7, 16gb versus the ryzen 7 with 16gb (13.3 inch envy x360). With hardly any price difference which one is better. Kindly give your view.
I have this laptop, agree with most of the review but I strongly disagree with his assessment of the trackpad: it is bang average at best. The surface is plastic not glass, and because of this is not as smooth. It is small, although considering the size of the device there's not much they could've done there. I personally find it unenjoyable to use. Obviously much worse than macs, but also worse than razer blade's too. I take my mouse with me when I have lots of work to do. Also, there is a decent amount of electrical noise coming from under the keyboard area. In normal use you probably won't hear it, but in a super quiet room and when the laptop is running quiet you might hear it. Overall though, great laptop
Hey AMDtech, will the Ryzen 7 model overheat (thermal throttle) under heavy load and underperform the Ryzen 5 version? It’s a great price on Costco but not sure if I want it to thermal throttle and perform poorly when casually playing games and other higher intensity things.

i've seen pictures with the finger print scanner in two different locations.. i'm so confused because everything else is in exactly the same place.. i think i like the finger print scanner more in the keyboard rather than below the numpad... is there a difference between buying the laptop from walmart vrs best buy vrs HP?

Danish S. the mx is barely 10-20% but is much more power hungry basically doubles the power consumption and will run hotter.

Any plans to review the Ideapad S540 (AMD and 16:10 display)? The Zenbook 14 with the MX350 is interesting too but some reviews claim it throttles the CPU down to 10 watts while others claim it runs fine. It has a single shared heat pipe to cool both so I'm assuming the former is true but I hope you can review it to validate.

A C yeah, it’s a wonderful machine, I’m no expert though but comparing to the one I had previously this’s marvellous. I’ve access to some computers at work and other places as well and I think this one is great.
Now I can draw some stuff at ease, I like doing cartoons and the like to tell a story and since I got this computer it’s making my life easier.

It gives me a seamless user interface, the graphics are awesome, the battery ‘life’ has been excellent I can use it for hours without charge and many more things you can do you name it and so I think it’s a great buy & maybe the latest version will be more immersive. This laptop hits the sweet spot. Good performance nice display all day battery life all in a quality light weight chassis .You can get laptops with higher performance & better screen but don't expect battery life anywhere near this.

Its a great device. Got the 4500u model as soon as it was showing on HP's page. Replaced the ssd with a 1tb nvme one. It ticks all boxes for me - nearly.. Its compact, excellent build quality, freesync display, good audio. Great device. Only one complaint is that they could have made the cooler and thermals better. (Also has single heatpipe). It is fine when running at 15w (temps max around 60c) but at 25w, temps reach 85c+ when on load (and this is based on ambient room temp of around 20c). Thankfully with the efficiency of renoir, you can practically get same gaming performance and better at 12-15w as to what you would on a 3500u unit at 25w

I live because of the two-in-one crab tablet mode, but when I use it as a tablet and enter the power saving mode, I have to unfold it back to the laptop and press the power button to wake up again.

The guy who designed the product didn't even benchmark the laptops of other companies and designed them, or did they use prototypes?
At least the keyboard doesn't work, the power button doesn't work, or even the power button doesn't work.

The keyboard backlight stays on, or when you press a key in a dark environment, the light turns on for about 5 seconds and then turns off again.
I want to hit a guy who designed this too. He doesn't know why the backlight is there.
Use Samsung's light recognition automatically, so it stays on when dark.
During use, it is hung occasionally, and because of apps such as jump start or beggar, it eats a lot of CPU, it cannot be removed from the program removal, and it must be removed from the app.
Fever is severe, and the sound of the fan is the sound of taking off the aircraft.
It's the worst laptop ever except for performance and fluid motion.
Samsung, LG, Lenovo, etc. There is no charge limit function to protect the battery.
I'm regretting hitting the ground why I waited for a 2700 one into 4700U and bought this product.

You know Andrew, I just bought the 15.6inch version with ryzen 7 4700u, 1TB ssd,8gb, pen and dongle for $1099.00 Canadian.. Prety good. I was tempted with the 13inch version but at 59 years of age my eyesight isn't getting any better.. I will say that it's prety heavy(comming in at 1940g.). For me, at that price, still a great deal. Ho. Btw, the memory is socketted and upgradable. 👍

Only had it for 2 days now, didn't get to try out some graphically intense games yet. But from my daily usage it performs and feels very nice. Doesn't get too hot running in HP's recommended mode. (Have the 16 GB option)

I just ordered this laptop with the 15.6 inch screen. I was tempted to order a gaming laptop, but after seeing reviews for the Ryzen 5 4500u, I figured it was not needed. I am not a serious gamer but I watched this cpu play games & it is way more than decent even without a dedicated graphics card. I got mine for $599 at Walmart online & free shipping. I did a lot of research & this was the best value that I could find. I would have liked a bit more RAM, but then the price jumps, but 8 should be fine for me.

I purchased it last week here in New Delhi, India for 1000 USD and am very happy I chose it over macbook air! This has amazing display (I got 400 nits model), good speed and battery life of around 9 hours which is enough to keep me going during an average work day. Also, my Samsung galaxy note 10 syncs seamlessly with this machine using 'link to windows'. Great going HP!

What are you looking for? Taking notes or digital art? Note taking I would recommend the adonit note+ for $55 (cheaper alternative is the adonit pro 4 which works better in my opinion but some people don’t like the tip) and for drawing the regular adonit note for $39. Lenovo has an amazing digital pen but idk if it’ll work for an hp device

Is HP trying to pull a fast on by supplying you with a screen that has over 400nits and generally very good sRGB, while as a consumer if I try and order one with a 4500u it will have crappy 250nits displays with dismal sRGB. To be fair, nothing for $600 has a good screen but I feel we are being bait and switched by HP supplying a review test unit with a display that isn't what you get when you order as a consumer. I would love HP to comment on this.
I would just recommend everyone be really careful viewing reviews vs. viewing what you order. I had to really dig on HP's website to find what's going on with the screen. Most retailers are selling the 15" version of the Envy X360, and the 15" doesn't offer any display options. You get a crappy 250nits display with terrible sRGB. Honestly I wouldn't expect anything better for the roughly $600-650 they sell for, but just be aware if you want a better display you have to actively search for a 14" version which has 3 different screen offerings. The worst offers 300nits the best offers 1000nits(for +110). If you are only using the laptop indoors for school or business apps this probably isn't a big deal. If you are going to use it to watch movies while lying in bed and what some color accuracy you might want to consider specifically searching for a 14" version with a better display, if if you use it outside on your deck, even in the shade, you are still going to want more than 250nits.

Try out the video you play for display testing for HDR support right here on TH-cam while browsing on Microsoft Edge ( Chromium version ). If possible, give Netflix a HDR try as well. Not sure why Intel should be worried. There are 20 good intel models for 2 good AMD models for laptops. If you want anything more than FHD screen, you have to buy Intel anyway. Keep in mind that most people (and I mean technically challenged people) think any Intel processor is better than any AMD processor.
We will start to see more premium AMD models. I am under embargo so I can't say more.

Does its USB c port able to run for example 2 external hard drives, external monitor, mouse, keyboard and may be an ex speaker in the same time?. Another way to my question I don't need to carry a USB c hub that need's power to run but I need to carry a very tiny USB c with mulitiple outs (HDMI, AUX, USB A ....) in may bag and to be able to run all these things through this labtop's USB c on the go. No HDMI = no external monitor connectivity? Or, is that doable through USB-C? That would require using the barrael type connector power supply rather then PD over USB-C. I am thinking to get this one for the wife to use. She is your typical average user. Mostly browsing, video playback on TH-cam occasional voice chat, all the routine stuff. I was thinking to get her there Ryzen 7 model, partly for when it comes to resell time, it would have higher resell potential. But on the other hand, I wonder if I would be better off to just get the Ryzen 5 considering her modest needs.
For myself, I am more of a power user and am considering the HP Omen 15 or 17". I want discrete graphics as well. My most demand use case would be BlackMagic's Davinci Resolve for video NLE production, thus I want the more powerful machine and dGPU. I can do without thunderbolt for now because that model can handle two internal M.2 SSDs which I would upgrade to 2TB x2. Since USB4 is around the corner that will be a converence of TB and USB into one protocol so I can wait for that one in the next upgrade. If possible, can you do a review of the HP Omen 15 and/or 17" model? Acer also has some powerful considerations coming out as well as Lenovo, but would be happy to see just the HP Omen for now. How come all the review units had Ryzen 5 and yet I can only find Ryzen 3/7 for sale in 13 inch?
I am undecided in choosing between the 11th gen i7, 16gb versus the ryzen 7 with 16gb (13.3 inch envy x360). With hardly any price difference which one is better. Kindly give your view.
I have this laptop, agree with most of the review but I strongly disagree with his assessment of the trackpad: it is bang average at best. The surface is plastic not glass, and because of this is not as smooth. It is small, although considering the size of the device there's not much they could've done there. I personally find it unenjoyable to use. Obviously much worse than macs, but also worse than razer blade's too. I take my mouse with me when I have lots of work to do. Also, there is a decent amount of electrical noise coming from under the keyboard area. In normal use you probably won't hear it, but in a super quiet room and when the laptop is running quiet you might hear it. Overall though, great laptop
Hey AMDtech, will the Ryzen 7 model overheat (thermal throttle) under heavy load and underperform the Ryzen 5 version? It’s a great price on Costco but not sure if I want it to thermal throttle and perform poorly when casually playing games and other higher intensity things.

i've seen pictures with the finger print scanner in two different locations.. i'm so confused because everything else is in exactly the same place.. i think i like the finger print scanner more in the keyboard rather than below the numpad... is there a difference between buying the laptop from walmart vrs best buy vrs HP?
