    I think it should be regarded as something akin to a religious belief. And that’s why it shouldn’t be written into law. If it’s in law then we all have a legal obligation to go along with a set of beliefs. That is a profound imposition on our freedom of thought.

  • @SteersmanOaring
    @SteersmanOaring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Bravo - quite a thorough analysis of the problem; MP Cates has clearly packed a lot into some 7 minutes.
    But the whole concept of gender is pretty much of an ideological dog's breakfast with little to no science for any leavening. However, MP Cates may be unaware that there's at least some small amount of merit and justification in differentiating between gender itself and gender identity. As Wikipedia's articles on "Gender" and "Gender Identity" put it:
    "Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to femininity and masculinity and differentiating between them."
    "Gender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender."
    While those statements are more or less tenable, many of Wikipedia's articles having anything to do with gender exhibit the same tendency to devolve into the same incoherent twaddle that characterizes much of the "debate" over both gender and gender identity; they're hardly less "ideologically captured" than is Stonewall. Though I'm happy to see that the British government is making some effort to part company with the latter; should probably sue them for fraud.
    In any case, as both MP Cates suggests and as Wikipedia implies about gender, gender itself is little more than, at best, a synonym for personalities - of which there are billions and billions. It is simply gobsmackingly unfathomable if not profoundly idiotic for the UK Parliament to even be considering recognizing all of those myriads of different genders and gender identities. Will we name each and every one of them? Will we have separate toilets, change rooms, and sports leagues for each of them? Separate sports leagues for introverts and extroverts?
    Madness, rank insanity. The UK Parliament might just as well go whole hog and stipulate that 2+2=5, or that the tide can only come in between the hours of 3 and 5 PM, Monday to Friday, 10 to 11 AM Saturday and Sunday.

    So I was going to preface this with a note on the fact that you are a MP and because of this are likely to not have enough time to look into the actual facts of gender and sex, but as this seams to be one of your favourite talking points I can no longer excuse this, the only disclaimer I have left is that you are a Tory so it would be rather brave of me to suggest you go far out of line of the general consensus of you’re part. I would also like to say that, this is a great address specifically to your base. Starting with generally inclusionary statements, that appear very humanistic, then building to a heavy reliance on”common scenes “ and “facts”. So for the purpose for this speech I would say that it is perfect in everything but it’s contents. It is shocking how quickly this becomes problematic, your first (of many) appeals to fact is the immutable fact of biological sex. Ask anyone educated beyond high school biology, they will tell you the way that sex manifests in the body is dictated by many different systems in the body that are by and large binary, but multiple items that are binary means multiple ways of arranging them which is distinctly non binary and mutable, the way in which this ignores intersex people is just outstanding. And that is just the start of this short clip, Jesus Christ. The fetishisation of facts, in a incredibly human situation is genuinely disgusting

    • @LillyCox777
      @LillyCox777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Secondly, this waffle in the middle about gendered souls is nonsense, it’s under veil of searingly logical assumptions that attempt to erase the entire debate she is argue in g, it’s honestly confusing that she took up this much time waffling just to say, hey be nice and that and everyone can be anything they want to be, but hears some totally real reasons to be as bigoted as you already are. I’d argue this point but there is no point being made. Finally the most egregious and disgusting section, children and fear mongering. The picture this thing, paints of what is happening in your schools is just false, the deeply bigoted wording suggests, that trans people and non binary people had a choice to choose what they are and that schools and weirdos online are trying to pressure this onto, like they are converting your children to a faith is utterly ridiculous . What is the evidence, common sense of just decency for these claims, that this is a problem. The worst thing for me personally is that this scare tactic was similarly used in the erasure of gay, lesbian and bisexual people when being such a thing was more openly regarded as a choice or a toxic ideology. The over fetishisation of facts in this piece is cherry picking and the complete lack of understanding of how science specifically biology and psychology is not “facts” it’s discovery. To anyone who has read this far, does every “fact” you know make you feel comfortable with your beliefs, because they shouldn’t that would be way to coincidental for you to be right first time. And that believing in science is not believing in evidence you want to because you find that everywhere, it is believing in the scientific consensus and in the case of this. This is a great deal of consensus that sex, is not entirely link to your gender and and that neither sex and thus nor gender is binary

  • @musicandfilms9956

    It is disturbing that an elected representative such as Miriam Cates should be so ignorant and bigoted. Young trans and non-binary people are placed further at risk of harm by her words and actions. I can only suggest that, come the next general election, her voters take note of this.

    Non-Binary should be a passport option. Its for identification. If a persons apearance makes their sex visually inderterminable, then if the passport says that is how that person is, then their ID matches their presentation. Also , If a transgender man's (born female, transitioned to male, ) passport says "Female" then they are going to have trouble at border control.

      They shouldn't drag their fantasies into every area of public life. If a passport is for identification, it's not for any shallow "presentation". If a woman has trouble at border control because she's interfered with her passport, she's brought it on herself. If they can't obey society's rules, they should get out of society, instead of causing chaos.

      Talk about twisting a quote to suit a narrative! St Paul acknowledged the existence of six classes of people here, just by the fact he mentioned them. The message was to live "as one", in peace with one another, without creating divisions or squabbling. These trumped-up "gender identities" divide society, which is exactly what he advised against.

It's only recently (in even less that decade) that the far-right has decide to turn it into a wedge issue. Transphobia is the cause of division, not trans and non-binary peoples existance. Do you blame the Jews for the division in 1940s Germany, or the Nazis that stirred up hatred towards them in the way that people like Miriam Cates are stirring up hatred towoard the trans and non -binary communities.?

How dare you say 'we respect you and your right to exist' and in the same breath, accuse us of screwing up children, threatening women and bringing down society. Schools talking about gender and diverse society.....heaven forbid we should talk about people and our existance! Trans/GNC/NB folk - adults and children - have always existed; we just weren't allowed to talk about it until now, we didn't knos there was a name for it, so we hated ourselves in silence. Transitioning doesn't "solve anything", as you put it, but knowing you're not broken certainly helps.

      Nobody is trying to deny your existence or dehumanize you - as far too many transactivists try to argue is the case. The question is whether, for example, transwomen actually qualify as "adult human females (produces ova)" - AKA, "women". And if they don't then it's a stretch to see how they can justify being treated as such.
      The standard biological definitions stipulate that to have a sex is to have functional gonads of either of two types. I rather doubt any transwoman - with or without a "gender recognition certificate" - has had "her" testicles replaced with functioning ovaries. Until that happens I see no justification at all for giving any credence to any claim to being actual biological females.

      @@SteersmanOaring When a cisgender woman has a total hysterectomy (removal of reproductive system inc. ovaries) for medical or personal reasons, is she still a woman? If a woman has a condition which means her ovaries do not function or produce infertile eggs is she still a woman? If a woman, like the athlete Semenya, has a naturally higher testosterone count, is she still a woman? I have working ovaries and let me tell you, calling me a woman (though legally accurate) would be discriminatory.
      Do not feel into the trap of using one 'simple' rule for a multifaceted issue, even if it is one that many live by. Gender identity is just as important as biological sex and should not be disregarded.

    • @SteersmanOaring
      @SteersmanOaring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kimberleg "... a total hysterectomy, is she still a woman?" Is she still an "adult human female (producer of ova)"? Nope.
      The standard biological definitions stipulate that to have a sex - male or female - is to be able to produce either of two types of gametes - sperm or ova. Those who can't - for whatever reason - are therefore sexless.
      You may wish to take a look at the Wikipedia article on "female" which endorses that definition. As does the Glossary of the article from the Oxford journal of Molecular Human Reproduction titled, "Gamete competition, gamete limitation, and the evolution of the two sexes" by biologists Lehtonen and Parker (FRS).
      You might also look at the Wikipedia article on Semenya which states:
      "Semenya is an intersex 'woman' [quote-unquote], assigned female at birth, with XY chromosomes and naturally elevated testosterone levels caused by the presence of internal [and non-functional] testes."
      By the standard biological definitions based on the presence of reproductive functions, on the ability to actually reproduce, "she" is neither male nor female, she is sexless because she's incapable of producing either type of gamete. No gametes, no reproduction, no sex. She probably suffers from "complete androgen insensitivity syndrome [CAIS]", another Wikipedia article you might try reading, but that doesn't grant her membership in either sex category.
      But by the "patchwork" and structure-absent-function definitions of [so-called] social sciences, Semenya would probably qualify as a male. Which is why that structure-absent-function definition is more or less totally useless for any biological applications which have to deal with literally millions of sexually-reproducing species, and billions if not trillions of males (producers of sperm) and females (producers of ova).
      But sure, "gender identity" is important, although "gender identity" and "gender" itself are little more than synonyms for personalities of which there are billions and billions; will we give names to all of them? 🙄
      However, the problem is that if you were, for example, to claim that your "gender identity" was "male" then the question is, "what do you mean by 'male'?", "what is it that makes your 'gender identity' male?". If you can't answer that, if you can't specific any objective traits that qualifies you to have a "male identity" then the term is pretty much entirely useless for almost anything. Except maybe making you feel good which really doesn't cut a lot of ice in any scientific or biological context or application. And certainly doesn't justify treating you as if you were an actual biological male - i.e., a person who produces sperm.
      Hard to imagine a more risible if not gobsmackingly incoherent and quite unscientific concept than "self-identification". "I self-identify as the Queen of England and expect to be treated as such!" 🙄 If a child of 12 says, "I self-identify as 35" then should they be allowed to drive a car, to buy alcohol and cigarettes, to vote?
      There are logical and social consequences to being members of particular categories. But if the criteria for qualifying for membership are entirely subjective then those categories are pretty much if not entirely useless. If not worse than useless.

      If you are going to try and educate (incorrectly) on sex and gender, don't use Wikipedia as a source. Try the WHO, NHS, NCBI, TransActual or Stonewall
      Are their billions of individual names for every part of our identity? Yes. There are innumerable names/terms/labels for various gender identities, as there are innumerable terms for any parts of who we are (nationality, culture, religion, profession, sporting ability, etc). Some are acceptably general, some are more specific, depending on the individial importance of specification. Some people happily identify as gay/queer/trans/non-binary, some passionately state a more specific title because it's important to them.
      Oh don't go down the Piers Morgan "I identify as a table, therefore I am" route, there's no need for that. I won't entertain you by explaining why a person cannot "identify" as 35yrs or the Queen. There are many writers and professionals who can explain gender identity to you better than I can - I would recommend M J Barker - but any 'identity' does not necessarily have physical or biological evidence, it is part of who you are as a person, an individual. It's not about agreeing, it's about respect.
      You say there are consequences to allowing people into certain categories. There are also consequences for not allowing them: in this country alone, the daily lived experiences of trans*/nonbinary people of lack of awareness, discrimination, harassment, violence, homelessness, poor medical care and suicide rates to name but a few (TransActual and Stonewall are my primary sources)
      It is called the Gender Recognition Act. All we are asking from the government is to recognise our gender. All I ask of you and anyone reading is not to fight us but accept us as valid human beings. This is not a fight of A vs B, trans rights vs women's/children's rights, last one standing wins.....these are human rights. We are fighting for the same thing. The arguments that are used against us are the same rights that were used against the gay/bi community in the 80s, the blacks before them and women before that. We look back now and realise those "fears" were unjustified. Realise it now.
