Ben, I think its the opposite - lobbyists are worried that all this publicity is exposing how good they are at suppressing r2r initiatives. Sure, they use misinformation, false equivalence, and when that doesn't work, just try and rub money all over the problem until it goes away. All while hidden in plain sight.
Now, with people like Louis pushing their process and arguments into the sunlight, there's nowhere to hide. Their 'nothing to see here, move along' M.O. is broken. They are having their Emperors new clothes moment. Louis has drained a little bit of the swamp and everyone can now see who has been wading naked in the lobby.

As soon as I heard "John Deere" I perked right up! It is all over TH-cam, farmers and the agricultural repair businesses of John Deere, with John Deere refusing to release the software to diagnose for repair their equipment. This is a example of a manufacture forcing equipment owners to have over priced dealers/factory authorized repair shops who may not even be located close to the "down equipment". The same is happening within the automotive repair and electronics industries. This needs to be stopped in it's tracks! This is being strengthened by the abuse of patents which the lobbyists have gotten Congress to enact. Consumers should have the right to their choice of repair shops, or even self repair especially!

Agree. Case in point. My mother's DVR died. Panasonic told her it was 'beyond repairable', and offer to sell her a new $750 DVR.. It took me less than an hour to open it up, replace the 40c capacitor (that was under spec for the job in the first place) and close it up again. All fixed!

@@IsaacDozier1 It is at a point when they take away the dipstick so you can't maintain the fluid level in the transmission easily. You have to get under them to fill, check or top them off. If that isn't bad enough the fluid for some can be at least $25 per liter. Some will not change the fluid or even touch it even if you ask them to. They want them to be treated as disposable. I don't see how a part that is $4000 or more is disposable really!! They are all making them this way too. They make them more difficult to service so they might not get the service they need.

It's a classing case of SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation). Unfortunately, because this video was posted to the internet, if TH-cam is like "Fuck off, it was a public hearing", they may be able to file a lawsuit in a state with no anti-SLAPP laws (exactly what Bob Murray did to John Oliver, file a lawsuit in a state where no party involved lives in). Even if the pathetic excuse for a person ultimately loses the lawsuit, they still win because the defendant is still on the hook for all legal expenses they incur.
Which is why I think we need anti-SLAPP laws on a federal level, and to be far more severe in enforcement. "Huh, your complaint caused the defendant to spend 15k in legal fees, you now owe him 1.5 million out of your own pocket, if you have to sell off assets, so be it, if you go bankrupt over it, and die homeless, you won't even get an obituary in the local newspaper"

0:51 to 1:11 and 2:01 to 2:35 th-cam.com/video/toIFN8eR0ro/w-d-xo.html Planned obsolescence: Why things don't last Jun 23, 2017 In the fight against planned obsolescence, the European Parliament wants to set minimum resistance criteria for products and better inform consumers about their durability. The aim is to encourage repair and reduce waste. The good news ? 77% of consumers in the EU would rather fix broken products than buy new one. The E.U did only one thing RIGHT! They demand all manufactured products to be restorable and repairable, scalable and interfaceable, integratable and inter-connectable and adaptable to each other.
The E.U demanded also that all manufactured products must have ALL of their components available for sale to all INDEPEDENT 3rd PARTY NON-CORPORATE HARDWARE STORES AND REPAIR SHOPS and non-compliance will result in sheer reprimands.
th-cam.com/video/zdh7_PA8GZU/w-d-xo.html The Lightbulb Conspiracy - Planned Obsolescence Feb 14, 2014. Did you know that the lifetime of light bulbs have been reduced on purpose to just 1000 hours?
Or that your printer may 'break' after a predefined number of printed pages determined by an electronic counter?
Or that Apple batteries lasted only 18 months which meant that you had to throw away your iPods and buy another?
What about Dupont stockings that were strong enough to tow a car, before they went back to design a stocking that would wear out more quickly!
Have you ever heard the phrase '...They don't make them like they used to' or have you ever wondered why an item fails as soon as the warranty expires or maybe just finished making payments on your car when the mechanic tells you it's time to buy a new one as it's beyond economical repair.
They say we live in a 'thow-away' society, just look at what turns up in Ghana labelled as '2nd-hand-goods' to get around dumping regulations.
...oh, and see if you can guess how long a lightbulb in a Californian fire-station has been burning for, 1 year? ...5 years? ...10 years? ...watch and see!
This documentary from Norway now released under creative commons licensing was originally called 'The Pyramid of Waste - The lightbulb conspiracy' sheds some light (sorry!) on the designed lifespan of products.

With regards to those officials whose salary is funded by the taxpayer - don't they have a duty to represent those same taxpayers in an honest, open, and transparent manner?
The fact they do not want these discussions to be had out in the open is extremely telling and belies their motives and intentions.
Please keep the hard work up and best of luck with the new store!

Just to add a bit of clarity here, it isn't the officials that don't want these discussions to be made very public, but the lobbyists. The officials are paid wages by taxpayers, the lobbyists are paid by companies and organizations to be a representative for them at hearings like this.
What Louis was saying towards the beginning is that lobbyists also tend to be the ones that act on behalf of a company or organization in soliciting campaign funding, and then turn around and use that as a bit of leverage when they lobby for a certain opinion.

I live in Sweden, but whether or not this bill passes could affect my ability to repair my own devices. If one or more US states start enforcing right to repair, companies can choose to either not sell their products in specific areas or to start providing service manuals and parts to everyone, worldwide. The second option is what will have to happen, otherwise the public will start asking unconfortable questions when they have to cross state lines and pay cash upfront for the latest Iphone.

@@yeahokbuddy2510 yeah, except most of the "grassroots" pacs are suffering from the same issue as the lobbyists and courts where you need to grease some palms and make some promises to some shady individuals that you will pass certain laws or block other laws if they give you access to the funds, influence and reach they control
truth is totally independent and free from the swamp individuals will be drowned out in the pool of sleaze, not sure if Louis's channel would have enough of a local audience to pull it off, while he has great reach online, its spread out across the world, to make a real impact you need a hyper focused and targeted reach to the exact area your located.
and things can get messy if your trying to garner support from around the world, if you upset the establishment they have 101 laws and rules when it comes to fundraising designed to kill opposition, everything needs to go through pacs or party channels, and without access to those avenues it becomes a minefield

When things like this annoy me I try and remember part of Charlie Chaplin's speech at the end of The Great Dictator
"To those who can hear me, I say: 'Do not despair.' The
misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear
the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass..."
The internet has allowed more and more of us to become aware of the scheming and slimey injustice that hides in the shadows. And eventually they'll have nowhere left to hide, and we'll all be sick of it enough to have the kind of momentum to finally get rid of them.
