ive always preferred white tools, decor, and accessories as i feel like they make a room brighter and i can easily add warmth by throwing in red, oranges, and yellows in other areas of the room. i thought i was a bit crazy for wanting to paint them until i came across your videos. now i know it can be done (though i plan to hide as many black accents as i can as it ruins the whole "brighter" vibe im going for") so thanks for that!
I actually really like your explanation for the color scheme. I was thkinking "yes okay, everything white, kinda boring", but now that I know it's for "decoration" purposes, and that I see your background, it's actually nice.
Also white isn't THAT unoriginal, it's kinda rare to find some things in white, specially tools. I love black in almost everything but I have to admit it sometimes looks boring because it's the default color for a lot of things lol
@@silv448 I loved black too, but combination of white and black is top notch. Combination of white for unimbortant things and black for important, functional things. I am now making hifi speakers where the boxes will be white and only cables and speaker diaphragm will be black. In my opinion, it's a compromise between open white and beautiful but all-consuming black. Come to think of it, it would be amazing to see an entire house designed like that, and many things are made in that color combination as well.
unbelieveable man. you have such a knack for finding a different angle for things! i aspire to be like you one day - i can't even imagine how much trial and error this all took!
The reason your paint strips is because you're using 1K spray-paints, they don't stand up to wear and tear very well. What you should do is finish with clearcoat 2K paint. Its extremely durable but you need to spray with respirator protection. 1k and 2k paints are compatible, you can still prime and coat with your usual paints.
I relate to this video so much I always end up buying things from the same companies just so they look good together, this is such a good way of adding a personal touch but also cleaning up the whole workflow to make them more cohesive with everything else
I clicked on this video expecting a pretentious explanation, but you communicated your reasoning really clearly and I like your approach & philosophy for owning things.
Protip: To help reduce wear, chipping and flaking on your finished stuff, use a moly-resin gun paint like Cerakote or Dutacoat. For stuff that you can't cure with heat, use Duracoat and let it air cure; for stuff that can withstand oven temperatures (metal parts, high-temperature plastics, etc), use Cerakote (it's much more hardy). Both of these finishes, when applied properly, won't want to chip, crack or flake like normal spray finished do, though they will eventually yield very smooth wear patterns in spots that wear (though it takes a long while to wear through either finish with just friction wearing).
@@feiyinwang6169 once the parts are fully dried/cured, then it should be fine - but because of the polymer additives in the paint, you absolutely SHOULD NOT spray parts around anybody who's pregnant - so spray your parts outdoors away from wherever pregnant people are at, etc. But once the parts are fully dried and cured (could take anywhere from a week to several weeks, depending on humidity, average temperature, air pressure, etc), the parts aren't any worse for a pregnant person to handle than any other kind of painted part.
@@bigmike- Is there any other safe and cheap way that I can make things white? Better 100% safe to be kept in the same house where the pregnant woman lives.
@@feiyinwang6169 not really; all paint has solvents in it that aren't awesome for pregnant women to be around (though, again, when dry and cured, it shouldn't be an issue as the solvents evaporate out). You might just have to wait until they stop being pregnant - but that's okay, good things come to those who wait ;) On a side note, good on you for asking the right questions and making sure to do right by the people around you - you're gonna do great as a dad! :)
Being the guy who made me get a 3d printer. And my god, I've learned so much, customized so much, and now getting into modeling using Shap3r because some things I want I can't find online. Now everything in my office / gaming area is black and white because the colors just flow so comfortably for myself. Started at all white, but I had to introduce a contrast. Awesome video man, keep up the awesome work!
Love the video! Tips when painting with aerosol's, try to cover the entire item in each layer completely first before moving to the next coat. I noticed you sprayed the measuring tape with the clear coat before moving to the back side with primer. Most likely there are clear coat particles floating around and reaching the surface before you sprayed the primer on the back and this will keep the primer from sticking and cause paint peeling. Also, any primer added once flipped over will be on top of the clear coat on the edged of the tape measure and flake off like onion layers, eventually peeling the entire piece. Reccommended 1.) coat entire item with primer, front and back (multiple coats) 2.) Spray with paint color, front and back (multiple coats) 3.) Use a small brush or q-tip to get into small cracks or places that the spray wont get to 4.) Spray entire item with clear coat once front and back are completely covered with white paint. If you follow these steps, you wont get the onion like layers that eventually peel and each layer will lock itself in with the top clear coat locking everything down. -Cheers!
These all look brilliant. like, it *screams* moon mission to me, and i love it. its so clean, but after it begins to break down and it has those cracks in the paint? absolutely divine levels of story telling.
I am honestly surprised you are making a video on this. I was expecting it to just be a joke that circulates your channel in mystery. However I am super satisfied with your answer, thank you for explaining
You're an inspiration as always, Scott. You were the first person to show me 3d printing to make printer parts and opened my mind to modding/customizing tools and appliances. I continue to be greatful for your passion and creative attitude in the maker space :)
I can't believe I enjoyed the ad part of you video just as much as the actual content. I feel like the companies you choose as sponsors always make sense for your channel so it doesn't feel abrasive or repellant. Is that good? Haha. Love your content. Can't wait for the next one.
Man, I've seen some of your vids and i really love everything about them. Sound, music, video, tool designing, ideas, setup... EVERYTHING. You deserve more subs
Just came across your channel. It is cool and refreshing to see things with production value put into them. Lots of channels just have someone sitting behind a desk waffling for 10 minutes these days, so I was happy to find videos with an emphasis on quality control. Subbed.
Finally! I've been waiting for this for almost 200 days - ever since I saw the upgrades for the white Ender 3. I fully support the described philosophy. Tools and things should work for the benefit of the owner, rather than promoting a brand or distracting attention.
I love this channel and the obvious work you put into the videos. One thing I would say though (and I didn't come up with this) is that if you only have principles up to the point where they become inconvenient, what you have are preferences.
There’s also the fact that it builds your own branding, now every time I see a thumbnail with all white everything 9/10 its one of your videos. It allows you to get pretty thumbnails that don’t just look like everyone else’s “toss everything neatly on a table and take a photo” thumbnail that is insanely common.
Thank you Scott for this video! I remember leaving a comment on a video of yours asking how do you customize your tools and this answers it perfectly. Was just expecting a reply, but a video is way better haha. Have a great day and thank you for your content!
GOD bless you Scott Yu-Jan for taking the time and sharing it with us. I truly enjoy watching your videos and listening to you reason and purpose it throws us into a creativity mind set. Thanks
Hey Scott! I have a tip for you when using paint. You can use a can of 2K Automotive Clear coat. It's stronger, doesn't peel as quick as regular clear coat, and it doesn't orange peel as much. The only downside to using it is when you activate the can's mixture, you have 24 - 48 hours to use it before it fully hardens. Thank you for making your content! I've already watched every previous video you released!
your videos have been coming up a lot in my algorithm, but this is the first one i've ever watched. mostly because i thought the all-white look was just you being pretentious, based on your thumbnails. i've now learned it's so much deep than that; that your values around simplicity and shitty corporate art design align pretty closely with mine. great content, thanks!
I'm a 3d printing enthusiast, but your cinematography would make me watch anything you upload. As a Prusa fanboy, I'd love to see a series on an all white Mk4!

right, everything is purposeful and not pretentious.

Every time you release a video, I am blown away. There's no words. On editing alone, they need to come up with some sort of award for you to win.

the cinematography and editing are on such high level... I'm impressed!
It all seems very cool, I understand the reasons, but what about warranty?
The nature of his channel makes me think that he's probably more inclined to repair his tools himself.
Painting the outside of things doesn't generally void warranty. The date stickers might even help with that
The quality and effort you put in telling a story is a masterpiece, GREAT JOB!
i took so much away from that last bit about wanting your things to act as a blank sheet of paper :) love the video :)))
Didn't even take my eyes off the video, not even one second. I'm very impressed with what you're put out every time.
