Solo Into Bulgaria's Unknown Past 🇧🇬

- 🇧🇬 Bulgaria is a land nestled between sea and mountains on the southern border of Europe. Its location made it a target for invaders, however, although subjugated for 500 years, the Bulgarians never gave up their hope to one day be free again. Join me as we make our way towards one of the greatest examples of communist architecture as we explore the hidden ancient and communist past of this friendly nation on our way to...Buzludzha..
Lost it when you called that dude a hobbit just to go through the door and see a dwarf 😂😂 6:17
He even gestured towards Bilbo and then played it off like he was showing the camera the station architecture 💀💀

This is your first video since the passing of my little brother back on March 4th. He was 25 and self-taught fluent in Russian. We used to talk about your channel and how we wanted to go to Russia together and ride the train. I shared that at his funeral and said I’ll soon go to Russia in his honor. Thanks for inspiring me and giving me something to connect with him on.

As a bulgarian, I am literally shocked how many foreigners in the comment section like our country. Thank you all and you are always welcome! There is so much more to see! Bald is number 1.
I visited 3 times in the early 90s - I had an amazing time. Went to many places and even tough hikes over the mountains (Musala, etc). Even bought some hand-made traditional Bulgarian folk instruments from an old guy who lived in the middle of nowhere (such do I love the traditional music, and being a musician myself). And some other trad things - beautiful pottery and woved items, etc, all of which I still have to this day. Wonderful place.
Do you understand Serbian Macedonian etc?
@@peternagy-im4be Serbian kind of, there are things I don't understand, but Macedonian is not a language, it is literally Bulgarian.

Hello Mr.Bald, this video hits real close to home as I'm from Bulgaria, but I'm currently studying in the Netherlands. I wanted to say that I admire your fascination with slavic countries. Bulgaria and its people have been through hundreds of years of hardship, mainly under ottoman rule and soviet communism, but still we have upheld our values and traditions. The villages that you visited in this video are just a couple of the thousands that are currently in disrepair due to the population either aging and passing away or the youth moving to bigger cities like Sofia. I am really grateful that you are showing part of the lives of the people that live there, my grandfather is in a similar situation and it brings me joy knowing others from all around the world are getting to see this. The country is truly beautiful, if you take away the fact that it is being ravaged by corruption and political greed.
Nevertheless, thanks for showing Bulgaria to the millions who watch your channel! All the best from Montana, Bulgaria. Благодаря!

Mr. Bald getting back to roots. He couldn't restrain himself and his desire of adventurazing into new mosaics and Soviet stuff. And this episode was magical. We can fell your joyness and enthusiasm. Let's say you are really a British guy trapped in a Soviet soul.
a Soviet soul trapped in a British body! 😎💪❄
soviet cat and soviet dog
The funny part is how he tells you all (and you probably believe him because you don’t know any better 😂 ) that Russia “subsidised” Bulgaria and once the “Soviet subsidies stopped”, Bulgaria fell apart.😂😂😂
I almost peed my pants laughing because Russia never subsidised anyone but itself, it sucked them dry, all the satellite countries, pillaging them to the last penny, exploiting them and calling that “importing”😂😂😂 it took everything they had at such “prices” that it totally impoverished them all beyond belief… that’s why they look today the way you see them look… 😂😂😂
I don’t know whoever told him that Russia gave anyone anything 😂😂😂 when in fact Russia took everything from everybody, from the Baltic States and Czech Republic and Poland and then to Hungary and Romania and Bulgaria and everybody else… just took and took and took for about 45 years, it just killed and pillaged the economies of these countries forever…all those countries need 100 good years to recover from the “Russian subsidies” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This version of the Bald Guy is good enough for a standup comedian … 😂
I really missed those Soviet videos!
Uhmmm... His grandfather is actually Polish..... But he refuses to go to Poland....... Still waiting for the video "Solo trough Poland."???

That's so crazy to think you can just run into someone on the street, 90 years old, says "I remember Tsar Boris". We think of some things as so far in the past, but it is only one lifetime away.
My father passed two years ago, and he just started army training in Australia and the war ended. As a child I use to think WW2 was long time ago, but it was only 20+ years. I couldn't understand why people often talked about something that happened way back in the past.

@@torstimyle1355 it’s the country with the worst demographic crisis in the world. Majority of the young people have moved to the capital - Sofia. In the province the population is aging. Also, train transportation is pretty slow and inefficient so it’s the least preferred way to get around.

Always loved your videos, Ben. I visited lovely Bulgaria's south last summer, and now i am visiting through your journey the places i missed.
Rousse (not Rus) is not your average "provincial" town. Thanks to its location at the end of the 19the and the beginning of the 20th century it was the place where a lot of things took place for the first time in Bulgaria - first train connection was between Rousse and Varna, the first textile factory was built there, the first cinema projection took place, first printing office in Bulgaria was opened, the first steel ship in Bulgaria was built, the first private bank was established... the list goes on. Those interested can check its wiki. It was a bustling commerce and cultural centre with a lot of foreign traders living there as well. Communism is not the only thing that happened to former socialist countries, I know that's what fascinates Bold the most, but I find it a bit ridiculous how he acts all shocked and surprised when he sees that it is just a small part of their history and there's a lot more to be discovered.
rus because its part of russia
Ruse, not Rousse. Unless you're French
Rousse and Rus sound the same in English 😅

Thanks for the video!
Your country needs its bright young people to help build it back up.
My advice as an expat - if you have family you love, don't emigrate. If you're alone, it's easier. I'm from England but live in South Africa, I'd go back to England and have the last bit of family I have left - but I have a South African wife. If we went to England she would miss out on her family. By staying I miss out. Either way one of us loses. (But we're good otherwise)
Hey Bald. I know it's not as flashy but Eastern Germany has some really cool communist heritage. You could check out pretty much abandoned planning cities like Eisenhüttenstadt or so. @@Rygelfan Either way it's high art. TV presenters can't do this.
@@Rygelfan you need to keep the camera running to capture those random locals that want to interact with you , but of course you can pick your places, you don't have to film boring sites.
@@Cloxxkiif a tv network picked him up and didn’t touch the videos it would be the biggest travel show on tv. I don’t think they would get it and want a polished product
It's so great how much Bald appreciates the little things. Door handles, tiles, flag holders... Brilliant enthusiasm and attention to detail!
very enthusiastic indeed
Really missed ya videos. You'll never know how much you saved me when all seemed lost your videos helped me out of a dark place in my life. Thank you
Really enjoyed that, thank you
Thank you Benjamin for visiting Bulgaria! For the past few years I'm presenting (and translating on the fly) your adventures to my parents. They love your attitude and curiosity and how easy you are able to make friends wherever you go. Your channel is truly a window to the world for us. Take care and cheers from Plovdiv \o/
Вот отличное начало недели ! Спасибо , Бен и удачи в путешествиях
Even provincial Bulgaria looks better than some of those UK towns you went through.
Don't make him try it to see when famous commonwealth nation tempted to hide from the mess they create in their own home how they britanise the new colony of Popovo I think would be a shocking video even for Bald to maybe not find a single Bulgar In there but all Briton foreigners ruining in mess and distress looking for a cheap pint or abandoned Babushka house behind the iron curtain.
the best programme on TH-cam...top man.
