Man, I feel that taxi driver, that's probably the best he could show of the place, since they barely have electricity. Loved that he invited you as guests to his home, that's such a nice hospitality and maybe he also felt a bit guilty on the poor tour. Cheers to him

It's summer garden resting area after agricultural work to take a break at peak heat hour usually between 1:00 p.m to 6 p.m. This people produce most of their own food due to remote location and conflicted border. The An2 is a very safe plane. Still used for crop spraying in former Soviet states. I saw one last year here in Romania, flying along the river spraying against mosquitoes. I'm a former pilot, and one of the fascinating things about the An2 is it doesn't have a published stall speed - no matter how much you pull back and try to make it, it will not stall. Just floats down to earth at about 40 knots. Soft landing and no drama! I must try and fly one soon.

    • @gary_neilson1896

  • @TerryMahoney

th AN-2 is literally one of the safest planes ever made. It cannot stall. If the pilot tries to stall it which would make it sort of fall out of the sky, the engineering of that plane will make it drift gently to the ground. Amazing piece of aviation history. My father grew up in a very small town in east Texas in conditions that were almost certainly more primitive and impoverished than what you see in this video. Despite his humble beginnings, he did very well for himself in life, and he was able to indulge his love for travel when he retired. He always liked to engage the local people wherever he went and was especially interested in their traditional methods of living as he said it reminded him of his own experiences when he was a child. The photo albums from his overseas vacations with my mother are full of pictures of him in some small village or along a road somewhere talking to a craftsman or farmer, asking them about their work and life. It sounds like he would of enjoyed joining Bald in that living room with the Taxi Driver / Tourist Gide’s family, dropping lumps of sugar in rose scented tea and finding out about the geopolitics of water stream annexations. Some places, just on appearances mind you, are so attractive that they give the illusion of peace and tranquility. Sox, and judging by the people we met there, seems like one of those places. I’d love Bald to take a trip through rural Japan, as I think his insights would be very illuminating. Thanks for sharing with us who your father was, as he sounds like he was a really nice guy. Best. ( I should add, that I wrote my response above in no way in competition with any other commenters - whose own responses I haven’t read - nor your own, as I genuinely found it touching that you shared a personal moment with which to contextualise Bald’s small journey for us, and that’s what had touched me and from the same place from which I chose to make my own response; in the small and simple kindnesses of others. The word Sokh comes from "Sogdia", which was the name of the people living in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan before the Turks lived there. The people in Sokh are Tajiks because the Sogdians were Persian, unlike most of the Turkic inhabitants of modern Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Alexander the Great's wife Roxana was the daughter of a Sogdian noble. The Sogdians were the greatest traders of the Silk Road, and the Sogdian language was its lingua franca all the way to the Byzantine Empire.
In the 8th century, a Sogdian general named An Lushan revolted in China, causing one of its worst civil wars in history - the An Lushan rebellion. It is believed that up to 2/3rds of the population may have died in the war, and as a result, the Chinese instituted a policy of Sogdian genocide once they regained power. All Sogdians in China were killed. This, coupled with the Turkic and Muslim conquests of Central Asia led to the decline and ultimate extinction of the Sogdian people, and now all that is left are places they once named.

In Germany they have (previously) been used as charter to smaller islands such as Sylt, Helgoland, etc. They are more reliable and robust than similar sized and similar aged Cessnas. AN-2's where made in two countries, in The Soviet and by polish Mielec. I believe the AN-2P in the video is actually not a soviet build, but rather a polish build - judging by the number of passengers. The polish build had a few extra seats fitted compared to the soviet.

It's loud, it's shaky (if you fly into a turbulence, you'll feel like going over potholes at a high speed), it's smelly... but it's definetly a great experience. Unfortunately, less and less of these are flying in my home country (due to EU regulations and stuff), but whenever I see one coming in at rooftop levels, or only hear the characteristic roar of the Shvetsov radial engine, I still get goosebumps.

Not even that unloaded or lightly loaded. Because it lands so slow it only needs a very short runway (by passenger aircraft standards) and they have been known to take off in less than 100m in ideal conditions.

I trust an AN-2 with more than my life. Amazing airplanes, and incredibly simple. The take-off and landing speeds can be so slow, that they are still sought after bush planes and used in remote areas. The AN-2 actually has NO registered/published 'stall speed'. Pilots can handle these things, fully in control, at a mere speed of 35mph with a good headwind.
Better yet, if the engine completely fails, you can pull the control column all the way back, and keep the wings level. At one point the plane will have a forward speed of a mere 25mph, paired with a 'parachute-like drop speed' vertically. You'll definitely crush the landing gear, but you will live!

@@mikkei3532 it's designed as a crop duster, utility, and agricultural airplane. Accidentally they also made it a STOL airplane (short take off/landing). In extremely hot weather, air gets thinner. It's not so much the temperature or humidity, but air density that's the problem. And it mostly impacts smaller airplanes. The amount of lift that is created in "thin air" is a lot lower than normal, so your take off and landing speeds (and distances) become way longer. Something this airplane wasn't designed for.

Shohimardon comes from Persian words Shah=King, Mardan= Men or simply King of Men. These areas before they were soviet territories they belonged to greater Iranian cultural sphere. Even suffix "ISTAN" is Persian word for state. All ex-soviet republics are called in the same fashion.

thank you for the information. I paused the video when the women in the airport were Tajik to look up their language. It is a Persian language as you probably know! Seems it is a part of the world where the Turk influenced world meets the Persian influenced world. But I don't know much about this area what you wrote fits with what I have read. Sokh enclave is Tajik so they would be Persian family I assume?

Not all, just the ones in the old Persian sphere of influence.

My extreme fear of flying may keep me out of this adventure, although apparently that AN2 is a very reliable craft. Thank you and Alina for another docu, Alina is so nice, the perfect travel companion, willing to put up with whatever and always has a funny thing to say. Looking forward for another adventure
