The Paddy Mayne character has to be one of the strongest on screen presences i've seen in a very long time. The whole show is superb to a man. As was said back in the day "Jolly good show sir"
..."green means go, amber means accelerate, red means accelerate and honk your horn..."
A Tradition still practiced until this day. 🤣
I remember a line from The Gumball Rally: First rule of Italian driving, what is behind you does not matter .
@@longshot7601 I remember that!
While there’s a fair amount of poetic license we should just embrace that the show is entertaining and amazing
and in reality they were just as @#$% nuts
yep but there isn't much artistic licence around the fact that he was a fucking maniac . In the best possible way 🤣
@@felix1974that's the thing, he was far from a maniac.

And let the blood flow
Mayne was a giant of a man! There are no accolades that can adequately describe his extraordinary abilities & achievements. Outstanding leader. Outstanding soldier. Outstanding lawyer. Outstanding academically. Outstanding Irish International rugby player. Outstanding poet. A man driven to make the most of every day! RIP 🌺🌺🌺 At Peace.
To die in a car accident was unbelievable. From my old town. Drank in Rosses bar. Nobody bothered him. Just like he bothered nobody. Rest easy definitely was due the VC.
Allegedly he was in the closet.

I don’t think there was a better soldier then mayne
He also was a hopeless drunk who caused his own meaningless premature death. I bet if you could meet him it would be a "never meet your heroes" situation. The guy was kind of a wanker at heart. Great soldier though, thank you Paddy Mayne RIP.
Having watched 2 seasons of SAS Rogue Heroes . ..i have but one complaint. .that i now have to wait at least another year for more Lt Col Robert "Paddy" Mayne 😢😢

i’ve read the book and watched countless documentaries about paddy and the rogue hero’s and as it says at the start of the show although some of the things seem untrue the indeed are true these are real warriors and the corner stone of every special forces going today

He knew his poetry. Good man.
A few notes for the uneducated. Firstly, The Officer who rudely addressed Mayne in the Officers Mess was in wrong as he disparagingly called him a “Paddy” most insulting indeed and also went to grab him by the shirt. Mayne being himself acted in a defensive manner. The MPs made the same mistake by calling him an Irish F-k, not nice at all. Now, although he was in fact called Paddy by his colleagues, which is not uncommon for we Irish to be identified as Paddy regardless of our correct given name. His real name was Robert Blair Mayne. He was never called and would never be called Paddy in County Down or anywhere else in His home town, Ulster or Northern Ireland. Robert was Protestant and no Protestant would ever have the given name of Patrick, anymore than a Catholic would be given the name William or Billy, in Northern Ireland. To reiterate, he wore the tag Paddy proudly in the SAS, However, as a Solicitor he would be known as Robert, Bob or Bobby. Yes, his Museum in Ballyclare identifies him as Paddy Mayne. Interestingly not in his home town or even Ballymena home base of the Royal Ulster Rifles in which he served (my home town) prior to the Paras and the SAS. A very brave and courageous Soldier and proud Ulster man. Another little tidbit for you. The VC was Awarded to more Irish Servicemen (North and Republic) than any other Personnel serving in the British Army. Considering, they are all volunteers. Trust you appreciate the info. God bless all; British, American, Canadian, Israeli and NZ, Personnel and a special thank to the past and present Australian Military Personnel, who have been part of my life for the past 60 Years.
well he did call out Lt Mayne several times and by this time he was ticked off that a Jr officer was ignoring him. It was Mayne who provoked him.
for god and ulster..long live the king!
I suggest you look at his background.
Loved irish traditional music
Some of his best friends in the SAS happened to come from southern Ireland including his best friend who died
And played rugby and boxed for Ireland
@@mikedon5205 what does that have to do with the fact that he grabbed a superior officer by the nuts and threw him? 🤣🤣🤣
@@Paddymayne4738 mayne acted n a defensive manner??? That might be the single stupidest most laughable thing ever written on the internet
This was such a great show.

Great show!
I have met a Paddy Mayne in my life. It was not pleasant, but it shaped me. Thank you Paddy.
Paddy is correct when he states that having a real lover makes you think of them when fighting rather than doing the job without a shit about anyone or anything. So, screw every one of them with a smile and enjoy like it’s your last, then fight like you want more tomorrow. No commitments to anyone but yourself, NO ONE! By Order of the SAS.
Give this man the Victoria Cross.

Best series
Absolutely love it. Hurry up woth season 2
It's out and brilliant.
At the 9 min mark of this was the scene where Stirling and Randolph Churchill (son of the Prime Minister) who talked his way to a spot on the mission with the SAS. Were discussing their plan to infiltrate Benghazi to blow up some ships. The scene shows them dressing up in captured German uniforms but the memoirs of one of the SAS members who spoke italian said they painted their Jeeps to look like German staff cars but still wore British uniforms going into the city. Because in theory they thought if captured they couldn't then be hanged as suspected spies.
They did so at night so it wouldn't be to obvious when they had to be stopped by a checkpoint.
Paddy Maine, a hard drinking Ulster man, meets Bernard Montgomery, a tee total Ulsterman. Two legends, and Brookbrough three Ulstermen that played key roles Britain's victory ✌️
Be careful with him David.. Best line ever.
Love it...hard times = hard men
It was crazy to find out my best mate is related to this absolutely incredible man, only issue I have with it is that Paddy Mayne was actually 6,3
can't wait till the 1st of January...loved the first series 😊
Paddy Mayne is my mates uncle. My buddy Robert Mayne was inspired to join the army after all his uncles stories.
Sure he is!
You do know he died 70 years ago?
"Is there a French word for Initiative" haha.... Great writing, great acting and Paddy was one mental sod by all accounts.
'Is there a french word for 'initiative'?' lol
I think the French had the initiative, don't get me wrong. The Leclerc column had its first victory in the Sahara long before the creation of the SAS: Koufra March 1, 1941.
Let's stop this French bashing and dear allied friends, remember Bir-Hakeim and thank those 3,700 Frenchmen who undoubtedly saved the British army retreating to Toubrouk.
Unfortunately the accent is off. Jack apparently listened to a lot of Ian Paisley speeches but Paddy Mayne was not a country boy, he was a rugby-playing grammar school boy from a middle-class family in Belfast’s wealthier South. Various Belfast accents fit the area and class background
He was from Newtownards not Belfast, but he did go to a Grammar school, and I went to that same school in Newtownards
A reporter was given access to paddy’s room he had filled with reports on missions he carried out, one being stealing a German train, riding it into a concentration camp and rescuing a load of Jews, not sure how true this is exactly but a film could be made on this man alone.
My grandmother knew him when she was a kid. He was very good friends with her father. She said he was lovely and reasonably unassuming when sober and awful when drunk. She described him as "absolutely charming but when he was drunk my god he was awful!" She once saw him in a pub destroying the fireplace with half a dozen policemen trying to hold him down 😂. But he didn’t have that typical Northern Irish accent. He spoke more grand like allot of upper middle class protestants did at the time. His accent sounded more like the queens English with a slight Irish twang. She also told me that he was almost certainly a homosexual which was illegal back then. So no one ever brought it up with him but they all knew. She's 90 years old as still talks about him regularly.
Paddy should have been awarded 3 VC's!!
He was never going to receive a VC after mowing down a Mess full of unarmed German airmen and ground crew. It didn't sit well with higher ups- not cricket.
Wonder if the higher ups had a different view after liberating Nazi concentration camps?

This reminds me of the countless times I have had to pry the actual goal out a micromanager... Why are we doing this? What will it look like if it works?
Hope there will be a second season. Brilliant show
Season 2 just came out!
Blair Mayne came from a well to do family in North Down, he was a well educated man..... the accent used in the TV series by O'Connell is probably far removed from a North Down educated man such as Mayne.
Wonder what the outcome of an interaction between Otto Skorzeny and Paddy Mayne would've been. Considering both lived in Ireland at various points in their lives, a meeting might not be impossible. I think it would've been an interesting conversation. I believe Paddy was already deceased when Skorzeny lived there. I reckon a few similar tales would be told and beers drank
It's Commando comic put to film. Cheesy and cheerful.
If there was anyone I would have shaken by the hand and bought him a Guinness.. Paddy
Not many men stood up to Mayne, Jim Almonds did, and there was a reason for that.
Jim Almonds was boxer, reputed to be the toughest man in the regiment.
Paddy is a crazy mofo...love the character 🔥

does anyone know the type or model of shirt paddy mayne wears most of the time? its surely a part of a british uniform...it looks very cool
Amazing is an understatement. We need more like him right now in this world. The only problem is the woke big brass. As you can see by example how Paddy himself was treated by the big brass Should have received a 2nd VC for his outstanding bravery and courage in battle. We know why of course. What give this disobedient upstart Ulster Paddy another VC, No way he doesn’t set an example befitting such recognition. The big man didn’t do it for the Medals and certainly couldn’t have cared less about what the Elite big brass thought of him. He cared only of his fellow SAS Soldiers. Service personnel in the Australian SAS and Commando having served in the Middle East only to be treated in a disgraceful manner by print TV Media such as the ABC doctoring evidence used in a court of law. Hopefully, we haven’t heard this last of this nonsense and allow it to be swept under the carpet. These Soldiers deserve nothing less than a Royal Commission into such wrong doings and the persons responsible charged and jailed accordingly. Financial compensation is befitting to these Soldiers and their Families. Proud to call every single one of them a mate.
He had plenty of problems with the brass back in his time. So do you really think 1940's army officers were 'woke'? Or is it more likely Mayne was a very unconventional person who probably wouldn’t fit easily into any line unit, regardless of time, place and ideology?
You know he fought against fascism, right? Bearing that in mind, "woke" is another buzzword because you don't want to accept that freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequence. Sounds like you're another cis het, white man blaming others for your shortcomings and intolerance.
Paddy was lucky he wasn't arrested for being a gay man during that time too and Irish to boot. That's probably why he never received the VC. Being woke is yes he can be accepted as a gay man and a soldier while being Irish in the British army
@@perolavhavik2585
The big brass appear to be jealous, envious of Paddy in many respects. While Montgomery who was Anglo Irish, had no issues and. Was the one who sent the situation recommending the VC . It’s clear that they didn’t want Paddy to be held as a good example of how one should behave as a British Officer. Fine for his men and other Officers to respect him, as they shall follow him to the end and get the job done. While Paddy was highly educated, they would likely refer to him disparagingly as that mad bog Irish lout always drunk and fighting. the language used by the MPs and the Captain in the Mess Hall is close to the bone. Hence, when the big brass at the War Office received the Citation, they all went into horror and shock. They couldn’t ignore it, but they could reduce it to another Bar. I doubt that Paddy actually gave a damn. He didn’t do it for the medals. He did it as a leader of his men, to try and get as many through alive as possible, in clouding himself.
When will the 2nd season be available on Netflix?
Jack O'Connell is a fine actor, however, Lieutenant Colonel Mayne was 6'3'' and a physically imposing man, an Irish Universities Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Rugby international (Ireland and the British Lions). Surely they could have cast someone a bit bigger than wee Jack? (5'7'')
And his accent is shite.
It would drastically reduce the pool of actors they could choose from if they had to find people of similar heights & builds to real life counterparts, most actors (& people) aren't of the tall variety as the majority skew towards the shorter end of the spectrum (only 1% of the worlds pop is 6'6"+ for example)
Imo height shouldn't be too big of a deal, as it's better to find a fantastic actor such as Mr. O'Connell is imo, who can portray & embody the person in a broad sense, rather than get lost in the little specific details. And hope the audience can allow the sacrifice of certain details for the sake of overall enjoyment & portrayal.
@@QuasiMonkey
Off the top of my head, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Eoin Macken (even looks like the man himself), James Norton, Clive Standen, all decent British or Irish actors 6 feet and over, and there are plenty more. I’m not taking anything away from O’Connell’s acting skills, (I think he’s great in ’71, Starred up etc.) but there is a big difference between 5’7’’ and 6’3’’.
@@bad_dog4648 But how many of those actors were available at the time for filming & didn't have other commitments? Easier to list some names of actors that are taller but much more complicated when it comes to the actual production of a series.
I guess I'm just trying to say an actors height in relation to portraying their real life counterpart isn't or shouldn't really be that important when compared to the bigger picture of producing and our enjoying a series. Especially when they take a lot of creative license with practically everything else & should be viewed as a broad representation of true events.
Anyway, have a pleasant day or night and I hope you also enjoy season 2 when it comes out as they recently released the trailer and I know I'm looking forward to it!
@@bad_dog4648 Jack O'Connell's accent was woeful. Liam Neeson in his younger day would have been perfect for the roll. Jamie Dornan would be good, he was born and raise about 4 miles from where Blair Mayne was born and raised.

If you search for details of this actor and the role he played in this, the search results that come up show the main complaints are of his poor performance and the diabolical representation of the real 'Paddy' His family aren't happy with the complete misrepresentation of him either, and it is that one actor that makes the whole entire 2 series so hard to watch, I watched it on planner so could FF most of the crap acting and all the boring parts.
