I’ve been following your channel for over a year. I am an experienced horse person with close to 50 years of horse ownership. I haven’t done anything with draft horses, but I know a fair amount about conditioning horses for other things. I find it absolutely amazing that you do the things with your horses without injuries. That is a testament to your conditioning program and good judgment. I will be the last one to question you on your horses working hard. Horses do best if they have a job. You go about it in a smart way. Good for you and good for your horses.

      @Veikra ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@clairestaffieri4398 You dont blanket a working horse. The horse is one of the few furred animal to sweat. Throw a blanket on youll trap the moisture plus they overheat then freeze later on after work. Blankets are for low energy activity, hanging in pasture , in very cold climate. Draft horse have less surface area per unit of mass, square cube law, meaning they physically have a better body for colder climate with less heat loss. They need to sweat. Then when you get back, you squeege the sweat off so it wont have time to cool off on their skin too much.
We have shires, with eastern canada climate. -30C and under not uncommon. They dont need blankets even in pasture. They never sleep inside either. Even Syrana, which is 15 months old (and for sale) is warm under her fur in frigid temperatures.

I've only read stories about horses working hard enough for the steam to roll off them, but I was able to see it in this video. In Arizona, it's generally too warm and dry to see anything like this. It's a beautiful area and kudos to Lady and Bill for hauling those giant logs out. True definition of "horsepower."

I forget others want to enjoy that same beauty, until the leaves change color.

I can remember as a teenager still at home working mules back in the late 50's that ,at least, one of them seamed to take pride in what he could do. We were best of friends, some what like a boy and his dog. And some could care less. Payday and sundown type of attitude. They are all different and have to be approached as such. Really like your channel.

Hi Jim and Brenda. Thank you for your videos. They are entertaining and instructive. You tell your horses, "Care-step," and they trust you that it's safe to move forward. You might stop them one step later and they know to obey. Smart, well trained and hard-working teams. Please give Lady and Bill some special treats and perhaps an extra bit of brushing on my behalf. (Wish I could do that myself but B'ham, UK, is a bit far away. My arms aren't that long!)

Peeling back the layers of the onion. Advanced thoughts of pulling with horses,, and the finer points of Teamstership.. Brenda, glad you found your phone, good job. One time I lost my phone on top of the mountain in deep snow and loaned a friends phone , went up and called the lost phone, luckily after 2 attempts I heard it ringing as the battery going low, I was lucky to find it in the deep snow.
Concluding.. so pretty, this video I will watch again as I study every word and move. Words can not express my gratitude. Back in Alaska, Wisconsin showed me beautiful colors like those of my childhood , one of the best years I remember. Logging and brushwork, the Lake house looks better now.
..Nice hitch! Love that cradle hitch.
A log trailer with big tractor wheels comes to mind.., the mud so powerful and suction.
    Warming the cabin in Alaska.
Keep up the good work, your spot on.
    Experience Humbles..
God Given ability , Proud of you.
    Thanks.

In the shot of your back trail at about 5:46 it looks like steam rising up from the mud! I know it wasn't steam but I thought, boy that's some fast pulling to get the mud to steam! And Lady is a working maniac. She lays forward into the harness and wants to go for broke. And Bill is no slacker. What a great, ambitious team. At 6:30 the steam rolling off the horses is impressive and they do need the breaks to catch breath and not get an overload of lactic acid in their muscles. And you are the very opposite of "mean" or uncaring toward your horses. You explain loads, feed, and the minutia involved in understanding when they have reached various limits in working.

You know your animals Jim and that’s what’s important. Men need breaks and so do beloved working horses. We have limits and so do they. Wisdom and experience knows those limits. Interestingly there are “rests” and “hold” spots in music, and that’s what makes a fine tune. Great video!

I think it was a good call to show the entire length of that pull, it really shows why it doesn't work to continue pulling like that, not for you or the horses. I think Jim eluded to it earlier, just because they can pull a big log up hill that far doesn't meat it is the most efficient way to get that particular job done. The explanations kept it interesting as the horses rested.

Watching the stearm come off Lady and Bill. reminds me of back when I was a Hay dealer and loading the truck I always (even in winter worked in just a "T"shirt" till I was done. and during the loading of the bales I got a good workout especially if the bales were little better tha 60 lbs I sweat like crazy and the steam wojuld vent off me just the same way. I stand for a second and I'd be in a good cloud of steam. But I agree with Jim whole heartedly knowing when to stop and rest them is critical. 300+ board feet is a good sized log. and that was a long long pull. thanks so much for sharing. ECF

Todd i agree with what you say. I have been watching Jim now for a while and i have to say i knew nothing when i started watching him do this logging with the horses. I know horses especially Jim's horses they tell him when they need to rest, Jim knows that when Lady has rested enough she starts to paw at the ground. They are almost at the landing now and i have seen this team especially pull ton literally on the stone boat, at the horse pull. they are not struggling or Jim would drop the log and leave it there after the horses catch their breath they will keep on going. This is a slow logging spot its so far away from the landing and it is muddy, which helps the log slide but when you weigh around 1200-1600 pound you can really get bogged down. I think in the coming weeks he wont use lady as much because she is with foal she is getting a size even now and its early days yet. Jim takes very great care of those horses they do exactly what he asks them to do and they know where their stall is and they stand very nicely to taking up and taking down, they get plenty of rest and they love him and do anything for him. They know what to do even before he asks them even to do it. It is nice to see someone who is working with horses and back in the day if your horse would not pull the logs out they would shoot the animal. he exercises the horses when they are on down time and then they get to hang out with each other when they are not working. i wish all people who had animals were as good to their horses as Jim is with his teams. It would be counter productive if he worked them too hard because as he says they will just give up. these horses are great i think lady is doing amazing for being with foal and this type of work will help her when it comes to giving birth months from now. He knows what he is doing and he is sharing his knowledge and his experience with us so if we decide to do something like this then we can feel confident enough to do so and he is showing us how the horses work. In my experience with horses they just want a job to do these one want to please and that is a great asset in a team of horses.

Hi Jim. My Granddad John A. Forrest taught me about Pulling up and down Hills, that its tough Work both ways. He Worked His Horses somewhat like you do with Reasonable Rest stops. He always had good Pullers. He haled Cole for the Family and cousinly for Frinds from the Top, Green Valley and Beldon Cole Mines North of Cedaredge Colorado. Horses had to help Hold the Load back going down Hill and Leen in to the Coller going up. He stops and rests as needed. It really struck Home with me when I put my Shiolder into a Rop pulling a Heavy load up Hill! and getting ran over going Down Hill!

You have changed my thinking about the working of the horses . Watching how you take your time however long it takes to rest them as the work .

Well said. I've seen too many horses ruined because people didn't know when to quit. I don't know if it's a mare thing, but my mare acts the same.

Fantastic Video! Your horses are being used exactly as they are meant to be. You are conscientious of their abilities and how best to utilize them. Thank you for using the breaks to explain the process. As with anything, doing the heaviest/hardest work first, makes everything else seem easy. You have very good horses; a pleasure to watch. Brenda, I do hope you share a picture of the steaming horses resting in the woods.

Hello Jim and Brenda, wow you are an amazing man JIm, how well you guide your team Lady and Ken, working that huge log up that hill. YOu are very smart and are aware of the horses' condition physically and mentally. That trail that you need to skid that huge log up the hill does have slimy mud. Your wisdom and intelligence and years of experience are spot on in keeping your horses safe, and sound. All of your draft horses are healthy, and it is a pleasure learning from you how to get the horses to get the job done safely.
I love all that you have taught how to work with Draft horses.
