    It's odd that she says 'Firefly' doesn't have any dice. Yes it does... it's called the "Aim to Misbehave" deck. When facing a test that requires you to use your current stats to pass it, a random draw from that deck of cards brings the same sort of random element as does rolling dice. More generally, it always gets me how "dice haters" have no issues with drawing their fate from a deck of cards instead.

    I appreciate the honest review. However, I will piggy back off what others have said. 1. If you don’t like dice games and would rather prefer, firefly, which is the basis of this game that seems a little odd. The designer normally is pretty open when it comes to dice but I think he was hampered when FFG told him to use X Wing Dice. Rebellion dice are much more forgiving. When I saw that the game used x wing dice I cringed. However when I saw how many chances there were for success I was excited. The designer changed the way the dice are used from X Wing. That game and legion are pretty stingy.
    2. Again if firefly takes just as long why is this a valid criticism against this particular game? Does firefly do something better that this game does not? I’m curious bc I’ve never played it.
    3. I think patrols are there to hamper players and make it more difficult to move around the board. If the game was just players moving freely around the board there wouldn’t be much of a challenge.
    4. I would figure turns would take long at first but after say two rounds the turns would go much faster. In the live stream of the game later turns went pretty quickly with 4 people.
    5. It is odd to say that the game does a great job at engine building only to later say that there is too much to remember with your character. It’s almost like you canceled out the positive there.
    Overall I want to give this game the benefit of the doubt. I have been saying for a long time that FFG needs to make a Star Wars game for casual gamers. I was worried that it would be a little crunchy with rules but it doesn’t look as complicated as say x wing or legion.

      Kira here. :) 1. We both like games with dice, myself more than Jeremy. Our comments were specific to how the dice are used in the game. I am the Firefly fan here, and both of us are huge Star Wars fans, which is why we wanted to play the game. 2. Merely saying that if I had both of these on my shelf, and was ready to play a game that took several hours, I would pick Firefly over this one simply due to what I get out of the time commitment. 3. I didn't feel they did much hampering. 4. I'll have to check that out. I can see that being the case, but still feel that with the number of items to track, the turn time could be longer than desired for me. 5. I'll let Jeremy comment on that point since he made it. --- Overall, I would play the game again, specifically with players with low AP. Thanks for your comments!

    • @kamb26
      @kamb26 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ManVsMeeple thank you for the reply. Btw I know it’s hard to do through comments but I didn’t mean anything negative toward you guys at all. You guys did a thorough overview and review of the game. Every review is going to have opinions and that’s fine. I’ve encountered games that others have liked while I have not. I really just wanted to comment and ask about firefly and point out some things that could’ve been clarified. Which you did here. Thanks.
      I also have to say if you prefer firefly then play firefly. :) I think FFG has had problems in the past with Star Wars games and dice ie they are either from one designer or there’s a confusing dice pool in the rpg. I think Corey K did the best he could with making the x wing dice as player friendly as possible with rules changes. Imo it wasn’t his call to use x wing dice. 🤷‍♂️
      To the point of the patrols, one major aspect of the game is to buy jobs/bounties/ gear to help you progress through the game. Here’s my question on that: could the game be fun if you don’t do those things? I thought you had to, which was why the patrols are on the cards. 🤷‍♂️
      Lastly I would love a Q and A with the designers on a fluid way to play the game. I could see where the having to remember items can get a little frustrating x wing and legion are the same way. My hope was that this game would shorten the amount that you had to remember. From what I’ve seen don’t players move on the board based on their cargo/ bounties/ jobs? So they would be referring to their board frequently? Idk. Overall thank you again for the conversation. It’s fun talking about this game and clarifying more stuff. I think FFG has done a horrible job in terms of marketing for this one because “officially” we’ve heard nothing in regards to the release date and previews of the mechanics of the game. I value your feedback and review because of this.
      Thanks

      I don’t think that this is a Star Wars game for casual gamers. I don’t think that’s the intention. It seems at least as heavy as Rebellion, sharing a similar number of different card type and play length.

  • @ReaganAndLincolnFan
    @ReaganAndLincolnFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This review is overly harsh, and the criticisms are super nit-picky/idiosyncratic (like the shape of the board or not remembering text on certain cards). This is my favorite board game atm, and with the announcement by Asmodee that there is more Outer Rim content on the way, I cannot recommend this game strongly enough-especially if you are a Star Wars fan.

    And downtime? The the turns are crazy fast. Move/get money/ or heal. Maybe take an actions, but often don’t take any. Then encounter something. Some turns take 15-30 seconds. This review is bizarre. I know we dont have to agree on anything, but it feels like you payed a different game. And having to reach for a component as a negative? Seriously?

    • @sephlar
      @sephlar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I don't get it. Turns are fast, even a four player game there is not that much downtime. Is this a starter game? No. But this game is head and shoulders above FireFly.

    Thanks for the review guys. It's definitely right up my alley for a game not just thematically. You mentioned Firefly but you also need to check out merchants and Marauders as an action-based Pirate game in the Caribbean that also has heavy modification to your ships. I've introduced that game to people who don't even play games and they beg for more.

    Turns really shouldn't take so long. Ideally, everyone should play these kinds of games by making fun and interesting choices and not trying to optimize every decision.
    We have a typical euro-gamer that often plays my more thematic offerings and his turns take as long as the rest of the table's turns combined as he tries to optimize everything. He doesn't even win that often as player interaction and randomness prevent the kind of perfect point generation he's going for anyway.

    • @johchadow
      @johchadow 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, I play with some people like that also, it's a shame they can't change their way of playing for different types of games. Not every game is a mathy euro. Even party games can turn into a slog with the wrong group.

    Would the Game Length be so bad if you decide to shoot for 7 Fame, (or less) rather than 10?

    • @hepta2502
      @hepta2502 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The rules do state for your first game to play up to 8 fame, then it also states for an extended game to select 12 fame. I expect if you wanted a shorter game you could just less than 8 fame. Its more the question. What is the minimal fame a game could be before its potentially unbalanced. Guess once its released and people experiment we will find out.

    I appreciate the extended final thoughts/review section. I have a soft spot for adventure games as a design curiosity and challenge. A lot of compelling mechanisms for upgrading player on paper, but will have to see how the X-Wing dice and AI/board state play out in practice (as alluded to in your conclusion.)

    • @hepta2502
      @hepta2502 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m wondering if the inclusion of a dice mechanic were the dice just happen to be fully compatible (gold) x-wing dice was more a strategic decision to pull in the vast numbers of x-wing players.

    Thanks for the review. Based on the on-the-fence feel of your review, if I were to ask you "If this didn't had the Star Wars theme going for it, would you even consider recommending this as a game on its own?", then I feel your short answer would be "no". Am I right in that assumption?

  • @rooter6
    @rooter6 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Let me put it all together.
    1. So you like how game is mitigating tests on dices, but you still have problem with them, because there are dices.
    2. It's hard to see the text on cards because they don't have text on every side? Players are forced to see map/cards upside down because of position at the table? That's a shocker!
    3. You don't like lots of text on cards, but you still want a thematic game. Huh?

  • @CollectionTHX1138
    @CollectionTHX1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is helpful and pretty much is what other thoughtful reviews have said. And I can't help but think of Firefly or I mentioned this in a couple other videos a video I have of STAR TREK The Motion Picture Board Game Milton Bradley 1979. It intrigues me becasue there is a solo mode with an AI deck. Would it break the game if you adjust the points from 10 to 8 to reduce the game time? P.S. you deal with dice a lot in Firefly but it's just a single one with lots of skill modifiers.

    8:50 This is actually a big no for me. It's an opportunity for kingmaking. I always skip that rule.
    18:27 Patrols move more frequently in 3-4 player games obviously. More players = more action and chaos. :))
    Game has great potential, but downtime can kill it easily.

  • @gcn9

    So I finally got to sit down and play this game and your review is spot on. There are some aspects of the game that are fun and interesting but there are many flaws that make it a game I am uncertain will make it to the table much. Honestly it feels unfinished. There are codex cards that make you go through a series of tests and even the rule books don’t explain much about how to approach completing them. The game is clunky and the dice makes it too random. The map is ok for one player but two or more makes it awkward to navigate and you find yourself standing around the table more than sitting. I don’t hate the game but I don’t like it in this state.

    Star Wars; Firefly edition. I also don't like that in a thematic game like this revolving around space craft...that the player tokens are cardboard standees instead of actual ships. It works for games like the Arkham games just fine, but feels cheap here.

    • @bgm-1961
      @bgm-1961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nowadays, minis feel cheap. Why? They're too common, too overdone, too blase, and colorless. At least the standeess have color right out of the box.

    • @sephlar
      @sephlar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I both agree and disagree with this. For the price of this game, I feel you are getting the level one would expect for the amount of content in the game.
      However, if someone wants to "upgrade" their experience with this game by using minis and swapping out some of the cardboard, it can be done with a 3D printer. I already have my 3D printer printing stuff for this game.

      Richard Plata Naga Raja has dice. Lorenzo. Marco Polo. Grand Austria Hotel. Star Wars Rebellion. Coimbra. Mansions of Madness. Troyes. Dice Throne. Wingspan. The castles of Burgundy. All of these games have dice and use them extremely well and we love all of them. If you listened to the review I clearly mentioned this was a preference and that it was only my own choice.

    • @frizzlebarr
      @frizzlebarr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alec Holland Literally every board game review is biased. If the reviewer doesn't have fun they aren't going to say wow great game. Just find a reviewer that's more in line with your tastes.

    • @frizzlebarr
      @frizzlebarr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Alec Holland Just saying "no they aren't biased" doesn't prove your point. Tom Vassel doesn't like games where you play as demons, Rahdo doesn't like attacky games because his partner won't play them, Sam Healy doesn't like dry euro games, Zee Garcia doesn't like anything longer than 2 hours. All reviewers are biased as not everybody likes games because they are technically well designed.

      Actually no it’s not. Which is why I’m so excited. It’s a full game in a box unlike what FFG normally does. I think their review is a bit unfair toward the game since they don’t like the style. They literally said in their review that firefly takes just as long and is basically the same game and they’d rather play that. It’s not that there really anything wrong with the game it’s just that they don’t like it. I’d say give it a try and watch or read other reviews

    • @benlauson555

      I thought they said the board pieces are like puzzles and that they are open-ended - waiting for its expansion. If the board game peices are in fact open ended the expansion was already in the works before the game even came out. Regardless the game does not sound or look fun to me.

    • @meeple

      Greg Lott they moved for us as well - just were a non factor a large majority of the time. Definitely 100% played it right.

    • @sephlar
      @sephlar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a two player game... the patrols do not move much. In a 3 or 4 player game, the patrols move a lot more. The patrols also are not made so that you interact with them all the time. In the star wars universe... the average smuggler or bounty hunter is only getting entangled in space patrols on rare occasions... the entanglements during jobs (thematic) happen more often on planets. This is not a space combat oriented game... again... FFG has many other games for that.
      This game balances better as a 3 or 4 player game. If your looking for a 2 player Star Wars game, then Rebellion is better suited (but it's a bit more deep than this one).
