    I wholeheartedly believe that Unfinished Business is one of the best expansions I have ever added to a board game! The second best expansion just so happens to be Rise of the Empire which is an expansion for another Star Wars game called Rebellion.
    This expansion, however, is the most substantial and effective content I have ever added to a game! Great review! So many epic moments to be had with this game.

    I really enjoy what a star wars 'flavored' experience this game gives you. Rescuing wookiees, delivering a rebel traitor to the imperial patrol , achieving a goal to turn your ship into a more notorious 'named' version of that ship, hunting down a bounty. And there are great emergent moments as you alluded to towards the end, like when someone finds your bounty and takes them on as a crew. Now you have to decide whether to chase after that player or give up the bounty for an easier target.
    My gripes are the game length (usually 3+ hrs) and that the game can end can feel quite abrupt (the ambitions help that part though). But for me I don't really care whether I win or not -- it always delivers a fun star-wars-y, almost rpg-like experience and that's a win in my book.

    You mentioned the dice are like the ones from X-Wing... in fact, they are identical to the attack dice from X-Wing. I even added some of the attack dice to my Outer Rim game, so we always were sure to have enough dice... and to not have to pass them around the table as much. Yeah, they aren't the same color, but that's OK. The expansion did include more of the gold dice, so that was nice, at least. :-)

    If an alien species arrived at Earth and asked me "Can you show us what a 'modern board game' is?", I'd show them Outer Rim + UB. It may not be the best bg ever, nor the most sophisticated one, but IMO it summarizes the experience of what I look into a bg: a bit of strategy, a bit of luck, a bit of exploration, some combat, tons of cards, some dices, randomizable map, a cool theme and the possibility to play solo, competitive or even co-op. It's similar to Fallout board game with all 3 expansions, but more well thought.
    I really hope FF delivers at least one more expansion with more characters and ships, more of every card type, more map tiles (2 or 3 more) and 3 new mechanics: lightspeed (pay X credits and double the movement in your turn), random events (new optional deck, some affects a single planet, others the whole galaxy, others only the top player, others all the players) and traits (new optional deck to customize your character). This way the game would be fit to play endless, I guess.
    Anyway, as it is now it's already awesome, mandatory for fans of both board games in general and SW with the money to expend on it!

    You've convinced me to give this a go. Been looking for a fun solo board game and Star Wars makes it a no brainer.

    I've always been a big fan of Mage Knight and I've been looking for another one of those 'Solo Adventures Played Together" type of game. So I definitely think I'm gonna grab one of these up or see if there's a mod for it on TTS.

    This is my favorite Star Wars game, by far. I hope to see more content for it. People have noted that the Mandelorian doesn't fit in this game due to the time line. Maybe a new Mandelorian edition would solve that!

      @yamel91 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fantasy flight have already said they won't add Mando.

  • @srpad

    It's funny that you prefer it at more players. Most people, in their reviews don't like the down time.. All our games have been at two. My wife and I both enjoy this game but for me, I play it almost like an RPG because I really like Star Wars. My wife doesn't really care about Star Wars but likes the card and dice mechanics so it works for us both. The Ambitions really helped the game. With out the expansion the end was often an anti climatic "Oh that was ten fame, I win I guess". Ambitions give the game that grand finale it was lacking. As far as the Mandalorian, my understanding is they didn't include those characters because the game is set in the early days of the Empire (between Episodes 3 and 4) and the Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire (between 6 and 7). But it's their game, they could have changed that in the expansion if they wanted to I suppose.

    • @KabukiKid
      @KabukiKid ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen others complain about the downtime between turns too. I never felt it, personally... but that may be because I tend to get all invested in everyone else's turn, so I don't feel bored waiting for it to get back to me... I tend to have fun even on their turns. I guess it can be argued that Outer Rim with three players is maybe the sweet spot, since that ads player-interaction without being too long between turns.

    • @Ariranhaa
      @Ariranhaa ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess they didn't add Mandalorian just because it was planned before the series. There are characters that although were alive by the time of eps 3 and 4, were seen only in other movies/series, like Maz and Krrsantan. Anyway, this would be a cool excuse for another expansion, wouldn't it? Something like "Profitable times", set after ep 6 with new characters, worlds etc.

    Xia Drift System, is similar. I prefer SWOR for its setup and length, but Xia has more to it in size, and variety, but same gameplay feel with more depth. I againmprefer Outer Rim, but anyone looing for alternative may wish to,look there too if want more Ship management and cargo handling.

    I've played Solo base game and 4 player expansion. I didn't like the negotiations. It also seemed a slow burn. Wish there was a way to get assistants earlier. It also seemed to take way too long. This coming from a huge Star Wars fan who liked Rebellion.

  • @KabukiKid
    @KabukiKid ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I loved the Firefly game, but yeah, this game tops it... and that expansion just adds that extra variety to keep this one going for a lot longer. I hope they put out even MORE for it, but I am sort of doubting that. I wish they would put out maybe a promo for the Mandalorian or something. I ended up going to the BGG files section and printing up a fan-made Mandalorian and Razor Crest. C'mon, I had to have that! :-D

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grog3514 To be TLDR: It's much more consistent on what it delivers. I also enjoyed Firefly quite a bit... but it was hit or miss... sometimes it was 90 minutes. Sometimes five hours. And, it missed a bit of the player interaction that's in Outer Rim. Some of the expansions for Firefly did fix the combat side with the Reapers etc... though.

      @@DriveThruReview blue sun made the reavers much more interesting and opened up the map. But pirates and bounty hunters really made the game special. Every turn, new bounties are announced to the table and they are usually in peoples crew. Always makes people nervous around others. It also added new ships like one specifically for bounty hunting. We always play with the different ships since the hunter can't really do cargo missions so they always hunt other players.

      They are going to make more expansions. If you have the game you will notice there's still cards missing from the databank deck.

    Great overview. I haven't had the chance to play with the expansion and looks like it would really help improve that game. I've played the base game a few times and found it to be an improved version of runebound 2nd edition, which is a good thing. Overall though, we found the game a bit long in the tooth and ultimately anti-climatic, and also found that the initial fun star wars tropes/themes wore off after the first time you experienced them.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya the expansion really helps there, specifically the Ambitions that give kind of an "alternate" take on your character.

    I think this takes place before the original trilogy, not sure how old Din Djarin is by that point, but yeah, some characters we see from Mando (The Armorer? She can always have one way-following crewmember when she stops at certain worlds, maybe? Greef Karga!). I wouldn't mind original characters either, but it seems they get a lot of mileage out of imagining familiar characters in these situations. Great to see you finally get to try this, was curious how you'd receive it. What would you say Firefly lacks in comparison? Could it be modded or is the SW theme just so evocative given all of the material?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Outer Rim is just more consistent. Firefly (which I enjoy) is kind of a mixed bag.

      In all seriousness, thank you for the great video. We're blessed with an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great Star Wars stuff on the tabletop and I'm resisting every urge to pick up all the boxed expansions for Imperial Assault as we speak, for fear that they'll go out of print like Descent 2e expansions did.

    I wanted to love this game. Played it over and over and it just fell flat for me and for all those I played with. It's too long and the a couple bad dice rolls kills this game. Never played with the expansion because the game got repetitive as we all began seeing the same cards etc. For the investment of time I would rather play Rebellion.

    • @Ariranhaa
      @Ariranhaa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The expansion set ambitions (what mitigate the luck factor in the long run) and almost double the cards (which adds replayability). It solves both of your problems with the base game, maybe you should give it another try!
