      It's because they are adorable, and you can tell who is who by just making them a silhouette, sonic characters were really unique back then I think, they are so charismatic and so full of joy that i can't help but smile when i always see one of them in the art cover.

    I can't help but respond with "Really?" This "Growing Pains" era as you called it truly was a weird time when Sonic games were little more than "meh!" Sonic was really starting to lose popularity at this point and I don't remember anyone talking about this series during this era, so if anything, Sonic Adventure pulled Sonic out of a slump, and I think it gets way too much flack these days, especially when games like THESE preceded it. SA was a breath of fresh air after these!

      @FlyingDuckMan360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      +Bowmaj It is true that SA1 hasn't aged perfectly, but it was the game that won back the crowd for Sega after the commercial failure of the Saturn in the US. Sadly, the Dreamcast wasn't on the market for very long (I personally blame both the PS2 and the original Xbox for this, especially because both consoles rely way too heavily on third-party support, where as Nintendo and Sega make their own games), and Sega ended up becoming another third-party company.

Altough it was a 6th Generation Console, the Dreamcast had most of the 5th Generation games, and had little of the 6th Generation games. I was a bit upset that SEGA tired from releasing Consoles, which means later on they had to make 6th Generation SEGA games for Non-SEGA Consoles, such as Gamecube, PS2 and other.

    there's nothing in later games that recons Knuckles' Chaotix. Team Chaotix could have formed the detective agency after they met and worked together in the events of the game. also, the Metal Sonic that appears in Chaotix is stated to be a rebuilt version of Metal, called Metal Sonic Kai, so the original body of Metal Sonic could still be on Little Planet for his appearances in Sonic 4 and Mania.

      in the trailer for Sonic Mania Plus it's implied that Knuckles and Mighty already know each other, which would seem to imply the events of the Newtrogic High Zone incident did happen. either way, with a lack of any dialog it'd be hard to definitely state that a game isn't canon to the classic timeline.

      So basically, Team Sonic and Team Chaotix have no major issue working together even tho they should't know each other if knuckles chaotix was truly noncanon. Like, everyone else at least knows each other but Team chaotix would just be a random groop of random guys that happened to get into skirmishes with team rose and team dark. Also, as far as I know Team chaotix never actually relate to if they know eggman or not and I don't think they even talk regarding metal sonic. I might be wrong tho.

      Kind of missed the days when the comics were allowed to do their own thing without being handcuffed to the game’s themselves. A lot of it was bizarre but so was Transformers Marvel UK and that’s still being celebrated to this day in the fandom.
      Sega outta start acknowledging other parts of the Sonic brand beyond the 1-3K and CD well and embrace them rather than pretend they don’t exist. Hasbro has learned to do that with their flagship series by homaging and releasing figures of non-toy characters.
      That or remember the countless IP’s they have neglected and start using them again like Vectorman for example.

    I absolutely adore Vector's original design in Sonic 1's concept art and Chaotix, it perfectly fits his goofy personality. I do wish Mighty had been Team Chaotix' power character, since he was already supposed to be super tough, so Vector could keep the awkward, doofy look. Hell, keep him as one of the Chaotix but just make him the lazy one who was asleep when the team got the call for help from Eggman.

    The Saturn is an awful console when it comes to developing 3D games, which made the N64 more viable for those. It was excellent where 2D games were concerned, but the Sega American management opposed bringing over "old" games like that.
    Saturn was essentially a primitive "dual core" CPU machine, similar to Jaguar. The weird architecture made it hard to make games and was expensive, which allowed the more generic Playstation to take the crown. It should be noted that the N64 lost that generation due to using the expensive cartridge format, and the Gamecube also lost partially due to disc media that had halved capacity.
    The moral of the story: Keep your hardware simple.

    • @Carsonj13
      @Carsonj13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      3D game development on the Saturn would have been SIGNIFICANTLY smoother if Sega had simply gone with a single, faster SH-2 with integrated T&L hardware. Their thinking was that a second SH-2 would pick up the slack and handle T&L in software. The problem is, parallel processing is difficult for developers. Even today.

      You don't know what you're talking about GameCube's smaller discs were much more efficient. N64 Cartridge format may have been expensive, although it was the superior console to PlayStation in terms of power/graphics, & Cartridges greatly reduced wait time. GameCube had better hardware than PlayStation 2 & the smaller discs meant faster load times. Besides most games at that time could fit on a single GC Disc, & the few that didn't could easily just use 2 Discs. GC Discs also cost less to manufacture than Xbox/PS2 Discs. The only reasons PS2 won were it being a DVD Player & certain exclusives like Kingdom Hearts in addition to the interference of Xbox in the console war.

    • @SabinStargem
      @SabinStargem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WaterKirby1994 My history books say otherwise about the virtues of the mini-disc, aside from the faster loading.
      Anyhow, there were various reasons why Nintendo failed to really compete during the N64 and Gamecube eras, but the biggest by far was their iron-fisted negotiation tactics.
      They liked to use very draconian contracts that favored themselves at the expense of the game developers, taking little risk. While there was merit in assuring quality control, most of the measures Nintendo took were solely to exploit developers.
      That is why developers jumped ship when SEGA and Sony arrived for their defining generations. During the Gamecube era, Nintendo made a deliberate effort to not provide adequate development kits.
      They believed that by making it hard to make games for their console, only "the best" developers would stick around for their console. While the console certainly had a quality library, the lack of third party support hamstrung the platform.

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SabinStargem There were hundreds of 3rd Party games on GameCube. From what I understood Sony was much more of a pain to work with than Nintendo ever was. PS2 was the weakest hardware & the most unorthodox of the 4 Gen 6 Consoles. They pulled really dirty deals threatening publishers that they would never be able to make a game for any future Sony System if they refused to make tons of games for PS2.
      Nintendo really mellowed out by the days of GameCube, although still insisted on getting quality products. Sony was becoming an unstoppable force & their tactics of bullying 3rd Parties was quite effective. Most of them didn't want to risk upsetting what was believed to be the most powerful gaming company. Sony is still a pain to work with to this day with their iron fisted approach.
      Microsoft & Game Journalists from The States were the real reason GameCube didn't get the sales it deserved. Xbox was different being an almost entirely 3rd Party Developer Console. Game Journalists were quick to back the 1st Big Console that wasn't Japanese at all. They glorified all these shooters & attacked Nintendo calling GameCube a kids console. Even though there were quite a few Mature games on GameCube, those jabs at Nintendo's 6th Gen Console stuck. That's probably why Nintendo changed direction & went to casuals with Wii.

    I think from all your videos this one I disagree the most, especially about Sonic 3D.
    Sonic 3D is called “Sonic 3D flickies' island” outside US for a good reason, this is a crossover with the arcade game flicky, for some reason a lot of people forgets about this and things it’s weird that Sonic has to collect birds on the levels. Sonic 3D is a nice exploration game, not all game of this franchise needs to be fast, especially a spin-off.
    I love the exploration and the level design, never had trouble with the controls, actually I think they are really good, some platforming can be a problem, especially in rusty ruins but this design is clearly made for this sections to skippable with a single jump, this section are not good but they are a small portion of great game.
    This is a isometric game, trying to destroy an enemy by jumping is a bad idea, that’s why the spin is there, there was just few seconds of gameplay on this video and that was already enough to give me that same sensation of watching some playing sonic without rolling.
    At this point I recommend everybody to try the director’s cut, is not official but it was made by Jon Burton himself and that is what really counts for me. Not only a lot of extras was added like super sonic and time attack without Flickies but also some gameplay changes too: The controls changed a little, the collision on some platforms were changed too, you can only crab a chaos emerald per zone, giving more reason to explore the later level and etc.
    Even of without the director’s cut Sonic 3D flickies' island still is a enjoyable and fun exploration game, that I recommend to everybody.

      Heck, I love that game. Levels were easy, but keeping 50 rings to the end was an alright challenge, and the bonus stages were awesome.
      I mean, look at Mania. Also ridiculously easy, and getting more than 1 ring was usually pointless. I'd take Chaotix over Mania any day.
      Sonic 3D was pretty alright. Love the special stages in that one.

    I hate break it to you all but many of the problems that Sonic as series had can be traced back to before this era to the Golden age. It's a combination of company politics and issues with tight deadlines on top of it all was the civil war between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. Sonic didn't really sell too well in Japan with Sonic 2 only selling a paltry 180,000 copies there; Sonic wasn't really on Sega of Japan's radar until the Saturn started failing. Emblematic of the issues of politics and tight deadlines is the Splitting of Sonic 3 into two games. The reason Sonic 3 was split into two games was because it had to come out in February 1994 to coincide with a McDonald's Happy Meal promotion, no joke. Then there was the development mess that was Sonic Extreme which ended up being a nightmare to work one primarily due to having a Holiday 1996 release date and constant demands for changes from Sega of Japan; the lead devs working on the game ended falling ill in part due to this.

    My favorite things that came out of this era were Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters. On the topic of Sonic R I think its a great example of just how much a great soundtrack can improve the gameplay experience of a game since while I agree the game has rather difficult controls, though I find turning while not stopped to be fairly easy if you use the turn/drift buttons (cant recall what the game actually calls them), I think its a rather fun and short game and the method of unlocking characters and stages to be pretty cool and unique, however I do wish the game was longer and had more content and as I stands I don't think it was worth the price of a new game back in the day for what you got, but as someone who got a cheap copy for the PC a few years after its release back in the day it was a good game to me. On a side note I preferred playing as Knuckles or Metal Knuckles myself.

      Once you learn the controls and maps, it's not a bad game, but it's very short, with only 5 maps, it just doesn't have enough content to justify a full sale price, today I'd probably spend $15 maybe $20 on it, but I'm generous with it because I adore it, I think for the average person, $5 is seriously all it would be worth.

    I have some decent memories of Sonic3d Blast... It was my only new game for the time so I had to like it. I found some of the boss fights fun when you mastered the isometric views which takes playing it a while to get uaed to the jank. I beat it but I still remember playing Boogerman inatead of 3d Blast as Boogerman was more fun.
    And I did like Sonic the Fighters.
    Edit : Your Sonic R review is the most comprehensive I've heard. Is that good or bad ?

    In the GameCube version of Sonic R on the Gems Collection, holding down the L and R shoulder buttons while running can cause the player character to lean, allowing you to turn corners easier. L for leaning left and R for leaning right, respectively. So you don't have to turn the control stick left or right. Just hold up and use L and R.

      That's a thing in the Saturn version as well.
