  • This past week was the 31st anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, and to celebrate, SEGA has put out Sonic Origins, a compilation of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The first two games having been remastered back in 2013, Sonic CD got a remaster back in 2011 and Sonic 3K getting a remaster for the first time through this collection. It's no secret that I think the current state of Sonic is quite turbulent, but will Sonic Origins come out on top? Well, let's find out!

One thing that definitely sucks about this release is that it caused SEGA to delist all of the classic games on Steam so if you're new to the franchise and want to try just one of them legally, you have to buy this collection with mixed reception that nobody really has anything good to say about other than that it has cool cutscenes. That's not going to be a good look for any potential future fans.

Man, this game is seriously a “death-by-1000-cuts” situation. I love finally having an official console release of the remastered 2D Sonic games, and there’s clearly effort here unlike in SCU. But there’s so many bugs and quirks not present in the originals that it’s hard to recommend in its current state. If these problems weren’t here (and if Denuvo wasn’t a thing on PC), I’d have no trouble recommending it. If SEGA hasn’t learned by now from constantly pulling the unfinished anniversary release nonsense that killed the franchise, I don’t know if they ever will…

...Not really but this should've been WAAAAAAY better for what its meant to be. It's far too rushed and unpolished on top of being rather unambitious with its features. When they advertise "new playable characters" I think it was fair for people to assume that they were going to add either Amy and/or Metal, not just Knuckles in Sonic 1 for the first time officially (Edit: Nvm lol). Mission Mode is a cool extra but it's just that, an extra. Having the drop dash in CD is busted but fun and makes the game better. Tails A.I. is awful in Sonic 2. Menu presentation is okay but you can clearly see where corners are cut with just imported generations models no Knuckles or Amy. Not to mention the technical issues some people are having with the PC version. Overall a decent and convenient place to play the classics and mod support should be good over time but as for the console versions it's overpriced and underwhelming. I don't regret my purchase but I would not recommend this to most people before a price cut.
Sonic 3 A.I.R is still the best way to play 3&K currently if you can get it set up which is a little harder now since the Steam Version of Sonic 3 has been delisted which is utter crap when there are significant problems with the origins version.

Yuji Naka has always been the bold type to just spit facts. I remember around when Unleashed was coming out that they interviewed Yuji Naka and Takashi Izuka separately. They were both asked the question if we would get another Sonic Adventure style game. Izuka gave use the boiler play answer of "I would love to work on another Adventure game and I think those games have a special taste to them, I'll always be looking to make another in the future", while Naka just said "this is the end of the Adventure era".
This is probably a reason he keeps having troubles keeping jobs and deals with lots of HR issues. He basically seems to be completely unfiltered. Wanted to basically "take' other people's engine and then fire them. Keeps acting like he's "father of Sonic" despite the fact that Oshima should get that title instead. Keeps acting as if he's one-man show who created Sonic by himself, despite working with a team who's efforts he seems to be constantly downplaying. @CarbonRollerCaco ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@sezunemizuhana3870 Those things aren't as cut and dry as you make them sound.
-Sonic Team was already working on the game that would become Sonic Adventure around the time the X-Treme staff wanted to use the NiGHTS engine. There was obviously an interest in keeping the two games distinguishable and/or having one be the "definitive" way. And X-Treme was going to suck anyway. Good riddance.
-All we have to "prove" that Yuji Naka wanted to take anyone's engine and have them shitcanned is secondhand hearsay. "Oh, THIS guy knew Japanese, and he's TOTALLY trustworthy LOL!" But if true, maybe he was still bitter about the X-Treme affair and refused to trust anyone Sega of America had hired, and thus wanted to hit them with their own medicine-or at least threaten it-to let them know how he felt. He was known to already have enough issues with Sega to briefly leave the company after the first Sonic game was done. That sort of revenge wouldn't be the best reaction, obviously, but people can change. Or maybe someone lied in that fashion to take advantage of the X-Treme affair.
-Naka DID come up with a lot of Sonic's key traits despite not actually drawing the character himself, so, yes, he IS the "father" of Sonic. Naoto Ohshima is more the "mother" of Sonic who crafted the "body", Yasushi Yamaguchi (who was also Tails's main creator) is the "nurse" who picked out which "body" would be Sonic's, and Hirokazu Yasuhara is the "doctor" who made sure Sonic would be healthy via the first game's level design. They ALL created aspects of Sonic and deserve credit for it. Though Ohshima is a terrible general game designer as the Blinx games, Yoshi's New Island and Balan prove.
-I'd say he's less downplaying his staff's efforts and more underestimating how hard they have it and how hard games are to make in general. He once called level design a "straightforward" job when it may perhaps be THE most difficult part of making games as levels are where everything else about a game has to come together and have to suit those things. I'd say that's actually the biggest root of his anger issues, with another being how his games often communicate themselves poorly suggesting that he himself may have problems communicating his ideas to his staff and not realize it, which is unfortunate as his ideas tend to be very specific and thus can only really work in a narrow variety of forms, which may be another thing that affected Balan. You get this one… sort of.
-I'd leave Sega, too, if they were treating my "baby" like shit and wouldn't let me help anyway. And he DID feel remorseful later for not trying more. I wouldn't, though; Sega's clearly only in gaming for money and has no interest in setting aside time to have games refined. Kind of like Konami. Or EA. Or Ubisoft blah blah. Saddened, yes, but not remorseful.

      @CarbonRollerCaco ปีที่แล้ว +3

God bless him for it. Though he does need to have a better grip on how hard game development in general can be and how to properly communicate his ideas to devs and players alike. He probably wouldn't have so many frustrations and rage episodes if that were so, even with how shitty a lot of those companies can be. Though Artoon/Arzest is particularly "special" as Naoto Ohshima seems to have his own ego problems and bitterness toward Naka dating back to when Sonic Adventure was being made. I suspect that Yuji Uekawa being made the new main art guy so Sonic wouldn't come off as excessively cutesy left Ohshima feeling unappreciated.

Remember that he made the engine for nights into dreams himself and Sega were basically ignoring him entirely from approval. Of course in today game companies would easily over rule such a thing, but these were the days where 3D engines were basically nonexistent. I don't like this collection for a couple of reasons:
-(PC) Denuvo DRM on PC: Years later, Sega hasn't learn anything. Even if it's not 100% noticeable it really would be when it does with input lag and stutters.
-Overpriced with DLC: It speaks for itself.
-Lack of customization: May had to do with the lack of time to develop this game, but hey, they added a mission mode, alright.
-It's not totally polished: We already know why.
-Physics have change a little: Breaking some specific scripted moments, not too terrible but if you were used to play in a certain way it would make a difference.
-No lives for widescreen, no coins in classic mode.
-(PC) 3D islands require a super nvidia graphics card for no goddamn reason. Could play this on my desktop computer without problems but my laptop can barely go through the menus, the games run fine though.
-Inconsistency in design: Menus are all over the place.
Game itself is fine, but again, Sega crippled this collection by no reason.

I had to use that chance to remain professional, but explain why I associate Sega with lies and manipulation and tricking it's customers and never learning it's lessons. I suspect they'll never reach out to me again after that. I'm tired of half assed Sonic efforts, and is the only thing holding me back from being hyped for Frontiers. We've been saying time and time again "surely the finished product won't just be that, right?"
We believed that Origins was hiding more features than what was shown in the promos, even believing you could do something as simple as Sonic having his sprite version be changable for each game from that icon in the corner of his sprite on the character select. We have to make up cool features to get hyped and pray that the game is at least playable.
I'm also being cautious about frontiers, I wanted so badly to be hyped for an open-world Sonic game but it just looks so bland and unfinished - something we've been praying would be fixed for every other Sonic game and oh look it comes out exactly the same. We've even started to perform high-tier detective work and conspiracy crafting to look for excuses. Ohhh it's an earlier build according to this one guy who probably works at sega ooooh it'll probably get delayed according to this random source oohhh they just showed it off poorly because ign is evil and bad and stupid. If the fan base were to simply speak with their wallet, then Sega would be forced to try and make a good Sonic game.

Nail in the coffin was seeing the tweets from Stealth talking about the current state of the game and how the team had to rush. I hope you’ll consider the Capcom Fighting Collection, with the entirety of the arcade releases of the Darkstalkers franchise, the first home release of Red Earth, Cyberbots, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Super Gem Fighters Mini-Mix, and Hyper Street Fighter II. It’s a wonderful collection that showcases some of the best arcade games of Capcom from the mid-late 90s, especially franchises that have not had near enough exposure as Street Fighter and Marvel Vs Capcom. Like Sega, Capcom hasn’t always handled their games in the best way, and there are a few key issues with this collection that keep it from being perfect (no cross-platform multiplayer), but these games are so great and it’s great to have them easily accessible for the first time on modern platforms (and the first time on Steam and Nintendo platforms). Yes, the DLC is atrocious, unnecessary, and basically a scam, but who in their right mind would buy such a useless DLC for an extra $5? The DLC isn't anything cut out of the base releases, it's literally pointless extras with no real worth whatsoever. The only thing missing are just more games, which were never advertised or planned since the games announcement. Games like Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast, Knuckles' Chaotix, and all the 8 bit games like 8 bit Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, and maybe even Sonic Blast? Although the new features they added are good, like the drop dash was added in the sega ages version on switch, but besides that it was the original version, not the widescreen and better controls. Also the coins that allow you to retry special stages is a system I love because it makes sonic 2 fun to play. So it was good to see these actually in an improved version of these games. all things considered I think this collection is good, bit could've been better.

Sonic Origins seems like a functional bundle, but there are THREE major factors that make this a dealbreaker to me:
First up is the Michael Jackson music for Sonic 3, it is all absent, even the music for Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base. The replacement music just sounds really, really bad! (It's like nails on a chalkboard)
The Second factor is the lives system has been replaced with coins in the Widescreen Modes, which removes all the challenge from these games, the coins just make all of this TOO EASY!!
The Third One is Denuvo on PC, which can make the entire collection UNPLAYABLE!!!
    Sonic 1 Forever
    Sonic 2 Absolute
Sonic 3 A.I.R. (With all the MJ music along with a couple of tracks from the past Sonic games)
    Sonic CD Restored & Knuckles
Are still the definitive ways to play these titles.
Why pay 40 bucks for this collection? I don't see the point when the MJ music is absent, you can't get Game Overs in Widescreen Mode, and Denuvo.
Might get this on Nintendo Switch, but only on a DEEP discount.
I've heard about the rush job on this Collection from other reviewers. What a mess... seriously, SEGA just needs to sell the Sonic Franchise to someone who would take much better care of it.

Ever since I saw HeadCannon's Tweets, I can only conclude and further agree that SEGA is the true cause and villain of hindering Sonic and Sonic Team's success and creativity.
Not only do they further paint themselves in a negative light, but they are willing to compromise a product's quality and pressure developers with their inhumane and unjust deadlines, regardless of their own or fan developers of a franchise they love.
Ever since reading and watching articles and videos about 06, I believe that the developers aren't the cause of the game being dubbed as the "worst and infamous" Sonic game of all time, 06 is far from infamous and worst, granted it's bad, but there are some good things in the game.
And the same can be said to other Sonic Games that have been rushed or hated.
Game developers are honest and hard-working people that provide us the best and actually care for a game's quality, but game publishing companies like SEGA and Rockstar, prove how little or no regard they have to developers' work on quality and care they want to put.
And if they can't change at all, chances are, they will fail as a company for not learning and looking at the bigger picture and how their actions have consequences.

It's not hard to have that line of thought when this is riding off of manias success already.
I came to terms with reality as soon as I saw what it was actually like, but even still the way this was remastered was odd. So they make entirely new cutscenes in manias style, makes sense. Yet the CD intro doesn't get this treatment? Let alone redrawn into a proper 16:9? Hell, the way origins presets itself in general doesn't really fit with what it actually is. We have these new cutscenes and a new intro but the rest of the game is pixilated genesis stuff. Between this and the selective shifting in mechanics, it's clear the developers vision was cut short so Sega can release it early as always.

I think the biggest issue with Origins is that it's not a bad *game* just a bad *collection* since Sega just took the Headcanon ports and taped them together in a somewhat presentable package. They should have left the entire collection up to them, and given them all the time they needed cause there was no need to rush this game out for Sonic's 31st birthday. It could have come out on his 32nd birthday or any day in between and there would be no difference in response (to the release date itself).

On the Switch in S3&K you have to hit x to turn Super Sonic, but the Mega Drive Crontroller buttons appear to be mappes to A, B and Y, so you can't go Super Sonic using the Mega Drive Controller on the Switch

Sonic mania iirc was a fan project turned official as well, kinda goes to show how much the fans care compared to sega .-.

Yeah, the simping for fan games is really annoying. I love fan stuff as much as the next guy, but going “😭 ChaosX is better” “😭Sega hire” “😭 Sonic is only alive because of the fans” is really annoying and toxic.

To be frank, that last quote is kinda true, if it werent for fan dedication, sonic wouldve died years ago. Hell sonic mania was basically a revival for sonic, its effectively the biggest reason sonic is still even slightly relevant (and it was mostly made... By fans...).
Honestly i really think sega shouldve just given the main devs of mania what the fans asked for (mania 2, and possibly a better collection) while they had their main teams work on the next 3D title. They pretty much proved they're incompetent compared to 3rd party developers at this point.

@@fusionwing4208 i understand that but sucking fangames off like they're the second coming of christ when they have issues themselves is just weird to me
not saying they're better, not saying sega's better
just kinda don't appreciate people throwing the devs into the spotlight and having their project feel like its overshadowing headcannon or others

Yeah I hate that fangames just get paraded around as what x game could be. (I.e. What I want it to be) especially when said games would be criticised to hell and back if they were officially.

If Sega were not so adamant on rushing their Teams with an unrealistic time frame to get big projects out, I could have imagined Origins to have had 3D Blast, Spinball, Chaotix and Mean Bean included. They could have even implemented in game pick ups like red rings to unlock said other games on secret islands scattered across the map, just so much lost potential here. Not to mention them being cheap skates and not paying the Michael Estate to get the music back for Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base, considering how big of a remaster this was supposed to be all in one.

I wish they included more Classic games (Chaotix, Spinball, 3D Blast, etc), especially considering 3 of the 4 games are free on smartphones (and 2 bucks each to not have ads in the games). If anything, I would have taken S3&K being remastered on iOS/Android like S1 and S2 were, over Origins.

I’m a new fan and Ive played through a fair amount of Origins! Completed Sonic 1, on the final boss of Sonic 2, beat S3&K and stuck in Wacky Workbench in CD lol.
It’s not perfect, but for someone who’s experiencing the classic games for the first time and that’s all I’m really looking for, it works IMO. It’s not perfect, I won’t pretend that it’s perfect or that it doesn’t have any issues, but as a newcomer to the series it’s definitely got me to fall in LOVE with the classic games!

I never understood why a celebration of classic sonic would stop at the main trillogy plus CD. They may not be the best games but even if they weren't remastered it would be so cool to see Chaotix 3D Blast Hell the Game Gear games or sonic the fighters. They aren't the best games but to celebrate Sonics history these games should have been included if they truly wanted to educate new fans on the series and let old fans re live them they should have been included.
I dont feel like asking this is too much for a triple A title it would make this game worth the $40 price tag.
