- Halo Reach holds a secret that most players don't know about. There is a secret enemy hidden on every single Halo Reach level and this easter egg took players a while to find back in the day.

Ex Bungie employee here. Bob Miske was an early developer of Marathon and created some of the key principles and ideas behind Bungie’s personality. He would later continue into parts of Halo as an outside consultant. Bob liked to host, (often random at times) at his house with newcomers to the team. He deeply enjoyed his Weber Grill and created lots of memories around it. Bob or Born on Board enemies were installed at completely RNG dropped set points, as homage to his guidance to many at Bungie.

Bobs were always mysterious Elites, but were cool nonetheless. And it was always satisfying to be able to kill one so you can get a better look and enjoy killing these hard to kill enemies. Even the White Bobs are satisfying to kill and interesting to discuss about along with their Gold brethren.
Also because some of them duel wield plasma rifles which many Elites except for some Officer Elites don’t do in the game

I only encountered a few of them and I have to say that I found them to be one of the strangest but also coolest parts of the game for me. I thought it was interesting to see random elites like that just in different spots throughout the game. Cool Easter egg

I love that i only discovered the bob egg by accidently hitting one with a pistol shot on the first mission.
Ive played Reach since it came out but i didnt realize i always took the exact same route through each level until yesterday when i accidentally took a wrong turn on Winter Contingency and found one. How did i miss this for... what? 13 years?
After watching the video maybe im thinking of something else.. i killed an Elite Ranger or something like that and got an achievement, but i did fight an elite that i thought i killed and then when i turned back around was just gone, no body, no elite, no nothing
My thought is the "Bobs" were put into the game for story purposes. They were enemies that tracked the player, high priority targets, and were meant as a way to keep the player on their toes thinking at any moment they can be attacked by an unseen enemy. That's my thoughts at least.
Absolutely. Especially when you consider how large some of the reach levels are. I do wish their bugs were cleaned up however
They're just a homage to one Bungie employee Bob Miske as well as a homage to some older Bungie game, Marathon. Other than that, I doubt they're even canon.
Hey team Rocket, I'm only mentioning this because it didn't appear in the video, in a recent playthrough of reach on legendary I splattered a BOB in the firefight section of the package, down by the wraith spawn at the back of the map. it said in the video that the last BOB was found in a banshee during that section, thought this might be interesting to know that another one can spawn there at least on MCC. keep up the good work.

I wonder if the BOB at 12:37 still spawns, as the most recent update unintentionally removed anti air gatling guns, seraph fighters strafing and firing down and respawning dropships for humans and covenant at the facility portion of LNoS, makes the level basically empty at the doors.

My buddy and I were playing and we're trying to get the spirits and pelicans to land show up. When the didn't we just gave up and moved on. Never new it was an update issue
I wonder if the bobs are basically scouts for the covenant, as soon as they make contact with an enemy they tend to bug out. Some of their spawn locations also make sense for scouts, for example the one on new alexandria is at the edge of the city and has a good location to spot possible UNSC positions. I do know they are actually called ranger commanders but they do act like scouts in certain scenarions.

@@Espartanica true, they exist too. They are more spies though rather than scouts but i wouldnt be surprised if ossoonas were used as scouts throughout the covenant war
Edit: i double checked and they in fact were used as scouts but would sometimes be deployed with no weapons so they were not expected to engage the enemy.

I always thought they were more of a hit squad member out to kill you in particular. It’s established in the lore that your considered hyper lethal. Wouldn’t be crazy for the covenant to task a highly skilled group of elites to hunt you. Or even other Spartans.
On the final wave in the firefight segment of the Package, one of the Phantoms drops off a BOB elite.

Has anyone ever noticed the invisible elite in the very beginning in the campaign of reach?
Like you spawn in, you run down and you can just see him run invisible. Just enough time to take it out.
That's the datapack elite, they are not a bob though
You can also have one spawn on LNOS where the drop ship drops off covenant at the beach, so the opposite corner from where you show the one despawing into the ground. He despawns super fast too though after like 3 or 4 steps. You can kill both of them if you do an assignation as soon as they pop out of the drop pod. Or if you have a wraith and you difficultly level is low enough to take them out with a perfectly timed shot.
very cool easter egg. makes you feel like your always being watched and really gives depth to the covenant being a hyper-futuristic military society that absolutely would have spies so deep behind enemy lines

I remember seeing them around and I didnt think much of them because I was little but I sorta remember seeing them in weird spots but I just ended up always killing them. I never saw one disappear though
The ones on sword base I noticed disappeared if I was slow but none of the others.
Bobs aside, it's cool how you are still manage to feature Halo-Content that's interesting to watch.
Like with Black-Ops-Zombies, Folks like me ask themselves: "when will all Secrets and easter Eggs be unsolved?".

When I was a kid, I thought Bob was something else.
I knew of a few of the gold elites but never made that link to them being bob.
I thought Bob was a minor elite in a banshee on Tip of the Spear Checkpoint Bravo (The spire) where I emp'd a banshee and hijacked it and the blue elite I said was Bob would never attack me. He just stood around.
I’d love to see you guys do a video of getting out of all the maps on Halo 2. You have the famous stairway to heaven and all the super bounces, but there’s also a lot of obscure, lesser known ways to get out of some of those maps.
I never even realized there were hidden Elites in the Reach campaign until a few weeks ago, playing it for the first time in years on the MCC. I killed the white BOB with the dual plasma rifles on ONI Sword Base and got an achievement. I thought it was odd, and maybe just something 343 had added. Now I realize it was part of something much, much deeper

Are they actually that rare??? I swear I’ve had two in every single level I played, but maybe that’s just my childhood memories kicking in. Unfortunately I don’t have any footage to back it up, still, I’m happy to know that reach still lives on. Our spartan’s sacrifice was not in vain.
Well, they aren't that "rare", you are technically always going to run into one on every level. But weather you see it, and kill it, is the harder part

When the Halo Waypoint forums were a thing and they had a feedback thread, I had the most silly recommendation that I still think would be amazing - if BOBs were added to matchmade firefight games. Not like other enemies, as part of each wave, but giving each Reach Elite or ODST Brute or Infected Elite a 1 in 1000 chance of being a shiny Bob, with a kill offering the Seek and Destroy medal with a Spartan Point to spend.
Alas, an obscure response to a feedback thread gone to waste.

I killed a B.O.B the other day on MCC and got an achievement as and I guess I killed it too quickly because I had no idea why it was special apart from the way it looked
I didn’t even know these existed until I ran one down with a forklift during sword base and got an achievement
The first time I killed a bob, it was with me playing with my father driving the warthog on tip of the spear. He wasn't paying attention so he accidentally ran over the bob on that level, and I got the achievement
I have a question. What's up with the invisible elite on the very first level of Reach? He can be vaguely seen running away from the burning warthog at the very beginning of the level.

I remember searching for the BOBs with my brothers, we used to have so much fun trying to find them but i never knew there were this many!
That was a lot of over-exaggerated jargon for a time-gated enemy that has to be killed before it disappears.
Getting an assassination on a Bob was a huge thing
I remember the only way you could tell you killed and found a BOB was checking the old Bungie site. They were also more rare to find back then than it is now in MCC.

This randomly appears in my recommebdations after i spent yesterday nostalgically replaying ODST and Reach. Completely forgot about the BoBs until one bushwhacked me with a fuel rod. Lol.
I played with never jinx back in the day. I actually brought up the “BOB” to him. Had so much fun talking/hunting for those with him. So many memories
They seem like a call back to the game time crisis where the yellow enemies give you extra score.
I wish these things can make a comeback so we can experience it again even if some other players are new and didn't get to see it. It'll be interesting what this stuff Bungie left for us in these games.
i have a feeling bobs are maybe something more, maybe connecting to the rebellion of the covenant before it happened, special elites gathering intel to see if the human were worthy to be allied with the covenant and/or the elites, i did find one on tip of the spear just before the first AA gun, when you see 3 skirmishers to the right, along the wall theres a side ramp and on top is one BOB, ran over it once years ago, nowhere near the AA gun, but high enough to see anyone come in and out of those tunnels

I remembered the only occurrence where I believe I found a BOB. It was the first level during the driving segment, I spotted a gold Elite in the distant and found it odd that it was running away from me. So I give chase in the vehicle, attempting to ram it. I missed as it dodge roll and ran behind some rock. I turn around and suddenly it was gone. I was so confused I decided to backtrack to look for it, thinking it must have ran that direction. Obviously I never saw that Elite again. So I chalk it down to "maybe the game glitched and cause it to despawn."
That one memory always stuck with me whenever mentioning that level.

Yeah, I was the hospital; didn’t get discharged until almost a week later on the 20th. So all 12 year old me could do was look through the contents of my $150 Legendary edition that I’d worked that summer to pre order and afford all by myself.
I swear there was a bob on exodus that you had to sprint to after you get off the falcon. Or maybe it was that you had to shoot him from the falcon but he was fast and at a hard angle to shoot?
New Alexandria and Exodus have no regular Bobs, only bansee Bobs

i never looked into this so i always assumed that it was a bugged elite that the devs never fixed. I didnt have internet access back then so its crazy to hear about this years later and finding out that there is more to it instead of it being a bug
Weren't the BOBs also a reference to the BOBs in the Marathon series, particularly the level with imposter BOBs
Fun fact, on tip of the spear there is another B.O.B at the second AA gun (not the one on the cliff at the first)
However Bungie messed up his spawning code and he loads before terrain unless you perform a specific glitch which loads the terrain first before he spawns.
This made me a little sad - I miss those days. Great times!
Once I was playing on heroic and was struggling, and came across 2 ultras and one BoB which I mistook for another ultra and I assassinated him before finding out, very interesting. It was a while Zealot.

Wait, when I first played Reach I found a white armour elite with an explosive weapon. I fought against the elite but escaped. I didn't put to many tough in that, believing he was a mini boss. But I remember that the second lap I was weirded because he didn't appear... But I didn't remember it anymore.

I remember the first time I met a Bob.
I was playing Co-op with my best friend on Winter-Contingency and as we made our way to the objective to save some Soldiers, we split up to cover more ground. As we did, I saw this odd orange coloured Sangheili running on the road toward the cliff's edge.
As I chased after it, I told my friend what I had saw so he came to group up with me to see it for his self. But before he got to me, the orange Sangheili vanished into thin air before I could take him down.
My friend thought I was going nuts, saying things like "When was the last time you went outside?" or "You must of imagined it." Then a few days later he met one himself and was all like "YOU WERE RIGHT, BOB DOES EXIST!!"
We came up with a theory that there's only one Bob and that he's some sort of time jumper. It never went any further than that XD
On the map where your underground fighting the covenant in the back of the map near one of the turrets I remember finding a golden elite and he had a fuel rod cannon. I didn’t know there was one in the banshee

Man I love how in tune bungie is with the community and they show that appreciation in their halo games, too bad it’s all over.
I have played halo reach for 13 years, and I have never found a Bob elite, maybe it’s because I play on easy all the time, but I’m not really sure! what makes this even more shocking is this is my most played halo game, and this was the halo game that I got the halo 2 master chief armor with a score of 11717 by crossing a map! I even put it as my main TH-cam picture!
I find it hard to believe you never found a Goldy after all these years (that's what we , the beta testers and veterans of Reach called it before it was called a Bob).
If you only played on easy/normal then that's the reason you never found a Goldy, they could only be found on legendary.
In all my play throughs I never encountered one on easy, it's only on legendary.
I pre-ordered legendary edition, beta tested, played at launch, solo legendary campaign (numerous times) and played multiplayer til I got to Field Marshal rank close to Noble (I spent most of my time In campaign, firefight and forge).
Still got the original game, legendary package as well as blue and red flames and turn it on every now and then just for the background screen to remember when HALO was still good.
Got it on MCC as well but it's not the same and don't play it as much I did back on the originals (even though ive had POS MCC since 2014 and have half of MCC achievements).
I do miss the good days of Reach and Halo in general, but good things don't last forever.
My advice go play it on legendary, with Iwhbyd skull on, start up the first mission (because easiest Goldy to find), once off pelican run fast and shoot at the invisible Goldy (he'll spawn on the right by the emu's,then he'll try to run into building if you aren't fast enough then he'll despawn) , time your shots with the pistol and AR until you eventually kill him ,then look at his data pad to get achievement.
Side not if you take your AR and zoom on his face helmet (once he's dead), you can see parts of his jaws, the liquid and such.

I hate that I bitch about this so often but this is the reason whenever somone asks why I dont like 343 games. The simple answer is it’s not the early 2000s anymore and they’re not bungie.

Idk if most locations of bob were found but I know where another bob spawns on Tip of the Spear. When you encounter the first anti air battery, there will be one that spawns on the left in the cliff that looks like a ramp for your warthog.
Fun fact, that level also has a different, very infamous BOB, community name: BOB 28
This BOB does not spawn _under normal conditions,_ requiring glitches or modding to spawn in, if it forcefully spawned (in its proper location), it spawns at the second AA gun, right near the cliff
Why didn't it normally spawn, well, good question and as far as I know, nobody ever found out why, possibly it was a bug that it wasn't spawning, maybe it just had the most ridiculous spawn conditions (aka, not the usual trigger-based ones) but to my knowledge, back at that time, people tried PRACTICALLY everything
I’ve killed all the bob elites in every mission and it gave me plenty of points yes but that’s it. So I can confirm there is not only 7 in any way.

I’ve only ever killed 3 of these elites, I’ve killed the white one on sword base, the gold one on winter contingency and the gold one on the sniper mission of the game
I’ve also noticed that the white ones act differently from the golden ones
I remember hunting these down to get the vidmaster challenge, though they were known as gold elites to us.
There is another bob on exodus, below the pickup pelican the part with all the focus riffles on the large stairs leading up to the pelican. As you cross between the buildings a banshee boosts past over head. There is a rocket launcher on the second floor before you cross the bridge if you act fast you can use the rockets to blow it up

The very first mission in reach I encountered one of those. I tried to kill it numerous times but could never get a headshot after getting its shields down. Sucks I couldn't pull it off to this day.
Sword Base is the only Bob I can remember
I once killed a elite similar to Bob, one of those white elites. They hated Field Marshall armour, and had dual Plasma rifles.

This elites were the most strange to me, they only spawned at legendary difficulty(at least for me, they never spawned with lower difficulties and no skulls active), they had a timer in order to found them (however you find them or not which was way too tight) otherwise they despawn, and killing them always dropped a strange PDA. There used to be a rare rumor that you needed to use a special armor (the arm support with a blue pda on it) in order to "save the data they dropped". I only found like 4 or 7 that spawn invisible with the golden space armor, the hardest to find was the level with the falcon because how wide open the level was.
Something that i hated is that MCC screwed them and made them 10 times harder to spawn.
The PDA elite at the start of Halo reach is not a BOB, it's just a cloaked elite

if its in reach master chief edition, at the oni sword base, in the courtyard, after the base defenses are activated. i would come through the gate and fight off the group on the ramp, but every now an again there would be an elite dress in all white armor, he would be dual wielding plasma rifles. this elite would be very good at dodging incoming fire and thrown grenades while returning very accurate fire. as soon as the cannon fodder is eliminated he will continue to use cover and harass the player until you move about halfway up the ramp. if he sees you coming he will turn tail and run to the courtyard and off to the left. if you do not manage to kill him in time he will simply disappear when he gets to the center of the courtyard.
I wish we got the BOB armor for our Avatars...

Fun fact BOB Elites are canon. Gold Rangers are Ranger Commanders. And many of the others are shipmasters like the white General and Field Marshal.
Well the white elite are meant to be the iconic golden BOB but because of a model issue the elite became full white with randomised armour

There was another guy who went by the name of Lord Friendship who had a guide detailing every Bob location and spawn point in Reach's campaign, leading to a total of 49 Bobs in the whole game. But it looks as if the channel got deleted.

You'd be able to tell if you killed a non-bansee bob (on classic reach) in the post-game carnage report, the thing you look at, is "Elite Light Vehicle"

BOB-s are not implamented in MCC Reach? I never noticed weird elites there, asides from the fleat mashal at the end and the datapad carrier at the start, or the random loadout elietes in the firefight game modes.
Also I never seen chalenges with BOB menioned, only secret finding, or later, moa statue hunting.
They’re there. Just bought the MCC for steam, ran one down with a forklift on sword base thinking it was a regular elite.
