Part of why it’s an underrated masterpiece is because snowflakes/Karens think that it’s objectifying/male-chauvinistic to be attracted to Jessica Rabbit even though there is a very good chance that they are probably attracted to women that are nowhere near as sexy (especially from the inside).

This movie still holds up so well after nearly 35 years. The acting is on point & so committed to making the animation seem real, the animation top notch from the entire team & we have Robert Zemeckis and Spielberg at the top of their game behind the camera and scenes. I never tire of watching this movie

the part where Judge Doom puts that helpless toon shoe in the dip traumatized me for life when I first saw this movie on video cassette! true story! (plus kudos to the late Richard Williams who worked on this film including as Director of Animation would still work on this long waiting animated film In production called "the Thief and the Cobbler"!)

So here is some facts I wanted to share for the film. Many may not have known.
-while the book the film is based on had a lot heavier layering especially having toons in the place of African Americans. There is still quite a bit of it in the film as The Ink and Paint Club is a play on the Cotton Club where African Americans could perform, but not be served and wanting to destroy toontown to make way for a freeway was what happened to african American neighborhoods to make way for freeways.
-the buying of the trolley system to make way for cloverleaf is parallel to real life when the tire and automotive industry bought the trolley system in Los Angeles in the 40’s,
-Mel Blanc the original voice of nearly every Looney Tune character reprises his roles of Tweey, Bugs, Daffy etc, but surprisingly someone else voiced Yosemite,
-the original voice of Betty Boop all the way back from the 30’s reprise her role here and most people would know May Questel better as Aunt Bethany in National Lamppon’s Christmas Vacation,
-The film’s animation director who received a special oscar for the film Richard Willlams was the voice of Droopy,
-Charles Fleischer the voice of Roger actually dressed up like his character to be more in the role,
-Bob Hoskins took mime classes to play off of things not there which is why his performance is excellent,
-When it goes over the desks you see his brother liked Betty so Eddie has a soft spot for her,
-the reason Eddie was able to do all of those acrobatics near the end of the film is it shows on the desk he and his family were once part of a circus ,
-looking back it is clear Lloyd is made to look like he is wearing a rubber mask (I still don’t know how they did that must have been a lot of makeup or something), but one interesting detail is Judge Doom’s cape always has a gust of wind blowing it back,
-Lieutenant Santino that works with Eddie and says he could have lended him money is the imperial officer in the original Star Wars film that was force chocked by Darth Vader,
-Felix the cat is at the top of the entrance to toontown as he was the first cartoon characters ever created,
-Eddie Murphy was one choice of Valiant, but he turned it down and to this day it is one of the biggest roles he regrets not taking,
-because some of the car stunts were so dangerous they had to animated Bob Hoskins in instead of him in the car,
-technically this film’s idea for a way to kill a toon does exist with the ingredients: turpentine, acitane, and benzine all found in paint thinner which would kill a toon,
-the dying laughing was not limited to the weasels as Judge Doom as he said “You remember what happened to your cousins the hyenas?”.
-it’s been thought that the toon that disguised himself as a man called Judge Doom is called Pistol Possum and the money he stole that Eddie and his brother tried to stop is how he bought the election and the revenue to buy the trolley system to make way for the freeway.

That infamous scene explains what was mentioned earlier about Toontown. If a human besides Marvin Acme gets into trouble with a Toon, they get sent to Toontown. You’d think that’d be a dream come true, if you were hanging with some Disney Characters that is. But given that the town itself is alive, it can be stated how the insane nature of it can turn you upside down, thereby making it a hell of a trip. I’m not sure what was the execution of that punishment contextually: a Pig Head gets attached onto Eddie’s head, but that placement makes it look like part of a mascot costume. I guess it was removed not simply because the whole thing was disturbing altogether, but when he removed it in the shower he used some dip which made the removal seem partially graphic.

So here's an interesting fact: In one of the graphic novels, Doom was revealed to originally be named Baron Von Rotten, a Toon who was once reliable in Hollywood due to him taking so many different shapes and forms, playing different character types. But eventually he was rendered obsolete, and I suppose he began to hate all the other Toons for putting him out of a job.

    • @sarahsims6164
      @sarahsims6164 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I heard about that, part of it was also him suffering a head injury that resulted in him thinking he actually WAS a villain instead of only playing them in cartoons.

    • @robbiewalker2831
      @robbiewalker2831 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sarahsims6164 Honestly, it doesn't seem that interesting; I can imagine that Judge Doom was once a Possom named Pistol Packin' Possom, and was likely fired because of Roger's popularity. Eddie said a Toon with a high-squeaky voice and red eyes killed his brother; also, there's one damning piece of evidence in the scene of the crime: the pistol with the long shaft. Besides, "Baron Von Rotten" has too red of an eye. Only the Possom and Judge Doom share the same eyes. Besides, saying "Baron Von Rotten is Judge Doom" is like saying "Naugus is the one inside Snively's Pod", which I'm glad Season 2 was cancelled, because those eyes belong to someone with Conjoined Eyes, not a character that has separate eyes. I know Naugus can transform himself, but I'm not sure they can pull off that excuse when, before the cliffhanger, we only saw Naugus transform into King Acorn, a character who also has separate eyes... Why did I suddenly go into a tangent about eye shape?

It seems to me that for toons in this movie laughter is much more important, if not vital. When Jessica says she married Roger because he makes her laugh, it seems to me that is a much more important reason for her to love him than it might be to some. I haven't seen in this movie since I was a kid, so I could be wrong. Either way, I think that's a good reason to love someone no matter how you look at it.

Before Chip and Dale, they were plans for a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. One is a prequel where Roger served in the army and had to rescue Jessica from the Germans during World War II. And the other is where he's adapting to a 3D enviroment. But all of them were cancelled due to creative differences between Disney and Steven Spielberg, the death of Bob Hoskins, and the company itself became a PC nightmare.

Rocky, Bullwinkle, Mr. Peabody, and Hoppity Hooper were originally gonna appear in the film as a cameo, but were removed due to Bullwinkle Studios, also known as Jay Ward Productions at the time, having no interests in letting their characters be in a Disney movie. Disney would acquire the home video rights to Rocky and Bullwinkle in the early 90s. Other characters, such as Popeye, Tom and Jerry, Little Lulu, Mighty Mouse, and a few more, were also going to appear, but were removed for the same reason. The film took place in 1947, the year Disney released their 9th animated feature film “Fun and Fancy Free”, as well as two years after WW2. Even tho Song of the South was banned in the United States after its 1986 re-issue, some of the characters from the film can be seen, such as Brer Bear and the Tar Baby. After all, Song of the South was released a year before the events of the film. Warner Bros allowed their characters in the movie as long as their characters, along with Disney’s own characters, share the same amount of screen time. This was the case with the Donald/Daffy piano duel and the Mickey/Bugs parachute gag. This is the first and, to date, the only time in the history of motion pictures where animated characters from different rival studios appear in one film together. The film was released to critical acclaim and was a box office hit. After the critical and box office success of the film, 3 Roger Rabbit shorts were produced and released in 1989, 1990, and 1993 respectively. A fourth Roger Rabbit short was planned, but was cancelled. A TV show based on the film was also planned, but was cancelled and replaced by Disney’s Bonkers. Sequels were also planned, but were cancelled due to creative differences, the passing of Bob Hoskins, and the company itself became a PC nightmare.

I bought the Blu Ray/DVD combo of this film back in 2020 when Amazon was selling it at a reasonable price. My God, was that worth it! Easily one of the greatest Live-action/animation hybrid movies ever! Lots of cartoon gags, subtle social commentary, great acting and amazing animation from a bunch of animators, all led by the late Richard Williams! Pushing his perfectionist ego aside, this was one of his greatest projects he ever had a hand in. So much fluidity and details, great use of techniques like squash and stretch, and how they are integrated into the live-action scenes... it's just wonderful! God bless Richard Williams!

I'm pretty sure this movie awakened my love for all things Noir. I was born a furry so that was already taken care of.
Oh, right, and Lena Hyena was a gag character created in MAD Magazine, designed to be irredeemably ugly and completely undesirable, while wanting love. That was the joke. Because MAD could be lushly illustrated she was more hideous there with skin blemishes and boils and hairs. Animation had to lose some details.

Since you noticed certain toons from different studios were put together side by side, I thought I'd explain why:
Their condition for letting them do so was that they had to be on screen for the exact same amount of time.
The result was scenes like the Donald/Daffy piano duel, and the mickey/bugs parachute gag.

Too bad that the prequel didn't get made after one of the last 2 shorts that were to come next before the movie can be made was supposed to be released in front of Arachnophobia. But Disney refused to let it go with it, which caused Steven Spielberg (the producer of Arachnophobia) to leave the studio to join with Jeffrey Katzenenberg to form DreamWorks. Which means we'll never get to see it in the light of day. If they allow them to let the next short released with that Horror Movie, we would've gotten to see the film and have some of the Cartoon characters that never made it to the first movie (including ones Disney couldn't get the rights with first).

I think that one clip of the native amwrican toon bullet was cut from television reruns of the movie. But, if I may add my two cents, I find it interesting how Valiant shoots a bullet at his empty wisky bottle, it's a pinacle moment in his development, and seeing as it's the native american bullet that represents it by smashing the bottle and cheering in triumph (even if the portrayal is dated) showcasing Valiant is starting to move forward from his brother's death. Not trying to justify the dated stariotypes or anything, I just feel that, compared to most depictions, this one is probably the least problamatic and at least it was utilized for a crucial moment of character development.

There was a scene where Eddie gets thrown into Toon Town by the Weasels after he returned to the club, and when he returns to the office, he finds that he's been toon-ified, so he washes it off in the shower. Jessica Rabbit had walked into the office as he was washing his pig face off. You can imagine where I'm going with this. The scene was cut. I think the reasons were because of pacing (no surprise) and the animation didn't look quite right (his whole face was supposed to be that of a cartoon pig, but his actual face looked plastered on).
