I never really understood why before now, but I think you hit the nail on the head with why Michael Caine's Scrooge is so great. Sometimes when they have a famous celebrity playing alongside the Muppets it can just be distracting, as was the case with a lot of the actors in Muppets Most Wanted. The actor can either go too over-the-top and cartoony like Tina Fey or they could not try in the slightest like Ricky Gervais did. The genius of Caine is that he plays the part completely straight, and his performance would fit just as perfectly in an entirely human adaptation. And that's largely the reason why so many people (including me) see him as the definitive version of the character.
I always heard that "When Love is Gone" was cut from later releases because of the emotional gut punch it gave viewers. Disney execs found the song to be too depressing in the light and cheery version that they wanted. I personally think the movie loses some of it's emotional connection without the song. You really get to see Scrooge's regret at his life and all he lost. Other versions have the Ghost of Christmas Past showing Belle to Scrooge years later. In some she's married with children of her own and Scrooge really feels the pain of loss at realizing what he could have had if he had not let his pride get in the way. There is one version, when Belle leaves Scrooge and is walking away Scrooge says, "I almost went after her," and the Ghost says, "Almost carries no weight."
According to Disney the song was actually cut because the original recordings were lost. Though I personally don’t buy that. And the “Almost carries no weight” version stars George C. Scott as Scrooge. It’s my second favorite version of this film.

Then it was lost in the archives according to Brian Henson, so when it came to the DVD releases, the first DVD was basically a straight rip of the VHS version. But for the 25th anniversary, the full screen version was still the VHS copy, while the wide screen version was cleaned up, but missing the original negative of when love is gone. And then very recently, Brian Henson said the original negative was found, and that it should be on Disney+ on 12/11/22 for the 30th anniversary of the film.
The love is gone held my attention as a kid.....at ro this very day even watching the clip of it very briefly STILL almost brought me to tears, also I love this one moment during the song where it looks like Belle is looking at present day Scrooge from the side but of course seeing nothing but as a kid I always liked to think she somehow could sense him.

Then in 2005 when the movie was released on DVD, it had a Widescreen and Full-Screen option, and for some braindead reason, Disney decided to include the song in the Full-Screen version as apposed to the much nicer Widescreen version. Then when the film was released on Blu Ray in 2012, Disney cut the song entirely.
You have Jeffery Katzenberg to thank for that, and even director Brian Henson was displeased that it was taken out, which I don't think any of us would blame him for. Personally, I found it criminal that they took the song out of the picture because, according to Katzenberg, "it's too depressing". Muppet movie or not, that was the whole point of the scene: to show that Scrooge caring more about money than Belle was what led him to such a miserable state. Removing the song not only makes the scene itself incomplete and rushed, but also takes away any emtional impact it may have had to further sympathize with the character. I only hope we'll be able to see a re-mastered director's cut with the song put back in the film, and in the original 16:9 aspect ratio in the future.
The narration was far more important than you think. It rarely deviated from the book. And as Gonzo said "It's okay because it's culture." Also, Belle left Scrooge for being more on love with money than her.

This is definitely one of my must watch movies for each Christmas. I've always adored how charming it is. When I was younger, I just found amusement in the Muppets. However, now that I'm an adult, I can really appreciate the work put into this movie. The Henson crew put so much effort into making an interesting adaptation of a story done countless times. The puppetry is amazing as always, and I end up feeling emotion toward the Muppets. It's definitely my favorite Christmas Carol adaptation, and I adore it. Also, I must ask, where did you get the clip at 19:49 from?
17:45 I didn't even know those two existed until I saw Linkara's review of the zombie comic adaptation. Most versions I'd seen were for kids though, heck, even the Ducktales 2017 episode that referenced Mickey's Christmas Carol (though the events of the movie weren't canon as Scrooge hadn't learned anything and the ghosts kept haunting them to the point that he had Christmas parties with them in the past and future) didn't have them and that show was made by the same people as Gravity Falls, one of the most mature kids' shows in existence.

This is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. Unfortunately I have the DVD of the version that includes When Love Is Gone. In and of itself the song is just okay, but dear god does it bring the movie to a screeching halt. And it's completely unnecessary to the story anyway because we already learned that they broke up because of Scrooge's increasing obsession with money. If they wanted to put a song here we should have learned that information in it.

I saw this movie a few times and I love it that it became one of my favorites.
My favorite part is when Ms. Piggy was about to punch Michael Kane in the face until he mentioned the raise.
And then punched Kermit in the following film, "Muppet Treasure Island".
