    The Janeway hug was the first time Dal felt real to me. That was very much the act of a stressed teenager who'd just been reassured that everything is going to work out fine.

    The writing for me is the best. I kept wanting them to up the maturity level a bit because each of these Prodigy episodes would make amazing Adult Trek.

    Please more Ups and Downs for Prodigy. The Ups and Downs are my main reasons for subscribing second to the top 10 videos. Prodigy was rough at first but by now has cemented itself into a real trek block of love for myself as well as other. It’s a kids show that isn’t just for kids show. Honestly I like it better then one of the other main running shows we have out there.

    Prodigy and Lower Decks are my two favorite Star Treks on right now. I was skeptical about Prodigy at first, and I tried watching it with my young son. Turns out he didn't like it that much, but I came to love it. Growing up, Voyager was my favorite ST, so seeing Janeway and Chakotay back is super cool. Plus the new characters have grown on me as well, and Gwyn has a interesting back story and mystery to her.
    Sean, I hope you keep making these ups and downs for Prodigy. I'll keep watching them.

      Note that Michael Giacchino composed the title themes of ST: Prodigy and Star Trek, Kelvin edition and also did the music for Star Trek (2009) and ST: Into Darkness. Nami Melumad did the music for this episode of Prodigy (Giacchino's son Mick was a "temp music editor" for this Prodigy episode).

    15:20 this hasn't always been the case. In Star Trek (2009) when the Narada first arrives and a crew member is being blown into space the sound cuts out and shows the phasers firing at the Narada.

    • @GSBarlev
      @GSBarlev 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Furthermore, space being _depicted_ as having sound doesn't mean the _characters experience_ sound in space. Ronald D. Moore was up-front about this in his _Battlestar Galactica:_ they *actually tried* a version with no sound, but it just didn't work, so they consider it more of a form of artistic license, similar to the false colors you see on _pretty much every_ astronomical image (where so many of the coolest phenomena don't show up in the visible spectra).

      In collage a coworker described to me how Star Trek (old Trek anyway) exists all the way on the audio end of the spectrum on how the plot of the story is driven forward by audio- such that one could follow the plot w/o visuals. And he said Mission Impossible was on the visual end-such that one could follow the plot of those by just watching it w/o sound at all.
      Also, I think lots of blind people like Star Trek because a major character, Geordi, is supposedly blind and he funtions w exceptional competency.

    The line that really got to me between Dal and HoloJaneway was right before the one you mentioned -- paraphrasing:
    Dal: They'll see right through me
    Janeway: Then let them, they'll see who you truly are
    Something about *that* line just got to me and made me like Dal that much more. The entire scene cut through the adolescent tough exterior he puts up, as he's trying to figure out how to put his true self out there to someone he's never met before for possibly the first time in his life.

    • @theblackwidower
      @theblackwidower ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @fmitchell238a
      @fmitchell238a ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theblackwidower Still, it *is* a "stolen" ship with a missing crew, and we only have their word -- and the hologram's spotty memories -- on how they came by it. (And that's leaving aside the virus on the ship that travels along communications channels, which may introduce some bias ...)

    • @theblackwidower
      @theblackwidower ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fmitchell238a Yeah, but they quickly tried returning it to the original owners. (I'm ignoring the whole issue with the living construct because they didn't know about it yet.) That alone proves they are not bad actors in this situation. That should be enough to gain enough trust so Starfleet believes them when they say they didn't steal the ship from the original crew.
      Besides, you really think Starfleet would just presume a bunch of kids managed to successfully overpower a crew of highly-trained Starfleet officers? I doubt it.

      That "notify starfleet alert" for Dal (more likely his species or something about him) is very Omega Directive-like.
      I think that he's either part of a [usuall] very hostile and dangerous species (he even could be 8479 in disguise - potentially with memory loss) or he is [heavily] genetically altered or engineered.

    I like Star Trek Prodigy quite a bit. I think I like it more than Discovery. So, I am glad to have Ups & Downs for this series.
    I have been watching a few animated series lately. I notice in all of them that the primary models of humans range somewhere from "a bit awkward" (Prodigy) to "pretty bad" (Clone Wars). But in all cases, the background scenes are always better. Some of the backgrounds of Lower Decks are just fabulous. But the backgrounds of Prodigy are easily the best. The background scenes of this episode are just stunning. The relay station blowing itself apart was just great.

    Barnus abandoning the "crew" of the Protostar to die on the station to me explains why he's manning a relay station on the fringes of Federation space: He's not even close to the best of Starfleet. He's an example of the worst: Warm and welcoming when there's no challenge or danger, but the moment something goes wrong he turns coward and acts to save himself with no regard for others.

    I will say Prodigy started off rough, which is to be expected since it is meant to introduce Trek to a new generation but. I feel like this backhalf is gonna be bonkers. I'm surprised Sean didn't make note of how Dahl's race, whatever it is set off MEGA ALERTS about contact Starfleet.

    I am not sure if you noticed the rank on the Starfleet Officer? He had both provisional and official rank pips. My wife and I came up with a theory (also based on his attitude at the end where he abandons the kids) that he was sent to this outpost/relay station as a form of punishment and temporarily demoted to cadet (is a single black pip [in this case provisional] cadet?) plus his normal pips which if I recall is Lieutenant JG? I also had thought that you missed the Easter Egg of the whales and ST4 but you did mention it... Well done on a great episode.

    • @Bursar01
      @Bursar01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that, but didn't pick up on what it was. I disagree with the "down" Sean gave the episode for his abandoning the kids. As you say, he's been sent to a far-flung relay station, on his own, quite possibly as a for m of punishment; CR-721 might not quite be Starbase 80, but as postings go, it's apparently not far off it. He's scruffy, in a dirty uniform. He might be a Starfleet officer, but he's clearly not a good Starfleet officer. Add in the fact that the kids have just turned up in a ship that has planted malware in the station, causing it to shoot itself to pieces, and I think his behaviour is perfectly in character for Barniss Frex.

    Honestly the little part where the station starts to rip itself apart has to be the best haunted house story i've seen in star trek so far, the way it is handled really felt actually very threatening. I give Barnus a little more credit, he's been alone for a very long time, his sanity isn't the best.

    I am enjoying prodigy but more importantly my 3yo and 8yo sons love it keep playing the episodes over and over, its a gateway trek as now they have watched a few eps of voyager and a few selected lower decks episodes, can see why the officer was stationed there he wasn't up to starbase 80 standards. wonder if the protostar ends up saving Janeway from the diviner at the end of the series

  • @kevinkarmann1239
    @kevinkarmann1239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I give an up to the video because it is great seeing Prodigy Up and Downs. Keep it up! However… the reference to how whales will breathe when separated from water must get a down. Whales are mammals and, at least on Earth, they breathe oxygen. Now, it is true that they are space/alien whales (which I guess is an oxymoron in the Trek universe as all whales are alien per Voyage Hone). Plus, being out of water is unhealthy for whales for other reasons (beached whales do die), but I felt compelled to point this out.
    Anyway, keep up the good work!

  • @evilkoolade

    My theory about sound in space has always been humans and most beings have problems with actual silence (I know I do and any time you see actual silent space it seams wrong and unfinished) so to help with this com badges and view screens synthetically ADD sound to fill it in and make it feel more right.
