    Another thing Jellico did right is telling Troi that if she's a Starfleet officer, she has to wear a uniform. Marina Sirtis loved that episode for this very reason; she HATED wearing those counselor outfits, ESPECIALLY the dreaded blue dress. She said the uniform was much more comfortable to wear.

    • @bthsr7113
      @bthsr7113 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Costuming (or the people who tell costuming what to putt on camera) really did a bad job if the military adjacent uniform is more comfortable than civilian clothes.

    • @calvinbethea3369
      @calvinbethea3369 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I blame the producers. They still wanted a sexualized Troi thus the costumes. This led writers to start treating her character as such. So much potential lost. Not to mention the poor handling of her psionic abilities. They reduced her from telepathy to empathy so as not to mess up murder mysteries. Babylon 5 handled telepaths in a much more logical fashion, I wish they applied to her.

      @@bthsr7113 I believe Denise Okuda was the one to bring up a drinking game of sorts in terms of how many times we have the camera follow a female cast member as they bend down to go through a Jeffrey's tube or set up at the bottom of a ladder to watch them finish climbing down and happen to pass over their backside. Dal being an augment explains why when he was scanned at the communication outpost, there was the flag to contact star-fleet command, either because they still have the "Augment bad" mentality or because someone at star-fleet made him.

    • @Raphmatic5000

      It's only starting to fade, but most of the laws banning free augmentation are still in effect. Pretty sure StarTrek Picard mentioned this in passing during the first season, but the comment was rather vague.

    • @shanepatrick6836

      I don’t think that the the alarms were because he was an augment. Watching this vid I thought why not say “augment” when the outpost flips out. Why hide it… unless someone in Starfleet didn’t want people to know. And who has the ability to block access to Starfleet computers to their officers and so few morels that “combining some of the aliens that as a single individual gave entire ships a fight into the body of a teenager in the hopes of making a genetic super freak that would make Khan say ‘hmm, maybe genetic augmentation is a bad thing’?” Yes, this is Section 31 plot. They would have access to all these races and would have genetic scanners lock out the riff raff if they encountered him. I mean, they’d go “modest proposal” on the Irish if it was for the Federation’s own good. Playing God with godlike alien DNA is totally something they would do.

    I think that we're used to Janeway being her own boss in voyager. It makes sense to me that she acts differently as an admiral because now she has to answer to someone. It's the reason Kirk told Picard "Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there, you can make a difference." It would be great to see Janeway in this show realize that.

      More than that, though, as an admiral she carries a much greater weight of authority, which leaves her much less leeway. But as an admiral anything she does is going to be seen as Federation policy.

    I think they're purposefully showing a difference in characterization between holo-Janeway and Admiral Janeway. Holo-J represents an infallible version of Janeway. She's a "living construct" of Janeway. The perfect idea of her.
    Then you have vice-Admiral Janeway. She's real, she's human, she's imperfect. HoloJ runs the entire ship alone. VAJ needs help. They've given us the idea of Janeway and the woman behind the idea. It ties back into the theme of who people actually are vs who other people think they are.

      It's been nearly a decade since Janeway was captain of Voyager. She was around mid-to-late 30s then, and is in her mid-to-late 40s now. I don't make decisions the same way I did 10 years ago, why should she? Sean bangs on about character growth all the time, but seems to not want it in Janeway. Growth isn't linear or one-directional. It's entirely possible for an older, wiser Janeway to also be meeker and more cautious after all.

    I really liked the reveal of Esencia at the end, did NOT see that coming. I'm guessing/hoping she is part of the faction that wanted to join the federation, and not the part that wanted to destroy it, but considering there's also Drednok there, that is unlikely. It'll be interesting to see what happens once Janeway finds out she has a couple of spies onboard.
    As for the Q DNA, i'm more surprised the continuum didn't step in and do something about that. As for the 8472 DNA, well, Voyager had some of that on file, but Voyager has only been back in the Alpha quadrant for 5 or 6 years by this point, and Dal is about 18 or so.
    EDIT
    I would also like to add my own "DOWN" for the Protostar's medical systems not pointing out the fact that Dal is an augment. I mean, surely someone did a medical scan of the crew when they first came onboard. Are we supposed to beleive that neither Zero or Holo Janeway ever did a bio-scan on Dal?

    • @GarettHarnish
      @GarettHarnish ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We already know what happens when Dal is bio-scanned; he was bio-scanned on the station. You get a classified alert and that is it. My guess is the system detected Soong-like genetic modifications, but you need sufficient security clearance to get that information, which no one on the Protostar has. Or it detected the Q DNA or the species 8472 DNA or the Vidian DNA ... something to trigger a security lockdown when Dal was bio-scanned. Either way, I can't see this having come out on a Federation vessel before this episode.

    • @TheGuardianofAzarath

      @@GarettHarnish what about a simple tricorder scan? That was enough to identify the Sonar and Baku as the same race, even though one looks nothing like the other due to genetic tampering, and yes, Zero is by no means a trained medic, but a simple tricorder scan should have picked up Dal's 'DNA soup' makeup.

    • @GarettHarnish
      @GarettHarnish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGuardianofAzarath I assume a tricoder identified species because the base DNA template for each known species is in the tricoder. Dal's DNA is spliced from all over the place and it is unlikely to match any of the species templates in its records enough to match. It is entirely possible the tricoder and biobeds can pick up that there is genetic modification, if it is something it is programmed or asked to look for, but I assume it is not something it does by default. If it was, Bashir's genetic augmentation would have been noticed a lot sooner than it was in DS9. The reason why the dr in this episode might have singled him out is she might have a bioscanner on the door specifically looking for signs of augmentation because that's her thing.

There's only about 60,000 light years between the two, with the Borg in the way.
