    Chlorine triflourite is actually an IRL proposed oxidizer for rocket fuel. It is also very toxic and has a tendency for spontaneous combustion, so it makes sense it would be a restricted substance.

    I actually think the scene where Janeway wants to go into the Neutral Zone and Tysess argues she’s too emotionally invested really gave me Equinox vibes. There’s a chase, she’s too emotionally invested, she wants to take it too far, and her first officer has to rein her in.

      Yep. I was going to point out that this explains her string of over reactions. She isn't thinking straight, and gets called on it at the end of the episode as they encounter the Romulans.

    You have a misconception about a plot point: When it is said that the Dauntless "can't" modulate the shields to hide in the Neutral Zone, it doesn't mean they don't have the technology, but that doing so would violate treaty and risk a war w/ Romulus. Janeway's 1st Officer said as much.

The first time is when Murf drops down from the ceiling as they are trying to escape from their prison. And now this time. This also seemed like a nod to when Dal blew up the Enterprise-D with a careless feet-on-the-table in "Kobayashi."
      Obviously that was a (simulated) Klingon console, but same principle applies.

    One thing that annoyed me was the appearance of the Romulans. If they were close enough to the dauntless to appear in the same frame as them then they themselves have crossed so far into the Neutral Zone that they are practically across it unless the neutral zone is only a kilometer or less wide.

    • @Nalehw
      @Nalehw ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@elim_inator I always rationalised this to myself as a statement on appeasement.
      The Romulans LOVE toeing the line, and the Federation is trying to avoid war, so the Federation lets them get away with entering the Neutral Zone once... then lets them get away with it again... and then eventually it's completely normalised for the Romulans to hang out in the zone. But the reverse isn't true -- the Romulans are totally willing to use force to enforce their agreements and won't let the Federation get away with anything.
      I know it's more likely that it was just lazy/confused writers, but I thought it ended up coming across as a pretty classic dynamic for a fascist power.

    • @RAdaltonracer
      @RAdaltonracer ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nalehw I fully agree here. Time and time again this is what happens. The Federation won’t take risks, but the Romulans have no problem doing so. They have the firepower to back it up.
      The Romulans will always “head off” a Federation “attack” by crossing into the Neutral Zone, and often, as is the case here and a couple times throughout TNT, with more ships than the Federation or Klingons. With just one D’deridex Class being a match for any Starfleet or Klingon ship.

      I would say this is far more extreme. Kobayashi Maru was about possibly entering a neutral zone and provoking the enemy. In this case, the enemy not only has already violated the neutral zone themselves but also violated Federation space. The neutral zone effectively doesn’t exist at this point. Further, in known canon the previous Starfleet diplomat that was able to negotiate passage thru the Romulan neutral zone was Admiral Janeway - for the Enterprise E. Which in turn was violated by both the Remans and Romulans, so I think they owe her a bit.

    Murph sitting on the console vs Riker sitting on consoles: They're capacitive. Far as I know, Riker never sat his bare butt on a console. Riker's uniformed posterior on the console is the equivalent of trying to use your smartphone with gloves on.😆 And as for the Dauntless not being able to hide by modulating the shields, that's not what they said. They said, they can go in, but Janeway can't follow, which is true... the kids aren't Federation, even if they're in a Federation ship. Kind of like Old West bank robbers trying to get to the border so the US Marshalls couldn't follow. Janeway can't go in because it's against the law. In addition to all the times Riker sat on a console, and nothing happened, remember the TNG episode "Hero Worship"? Little Timothy believes he killed his parents, and subsequent crew, on the Vico; when he lost his balance, and his hand accidentally hit a console. Picard & Data tell him that safety systems were in place to prevent such accidents. Clearance codes would have been required to affect any systems to activate. Surely the Protostar would have the same safety protocols in place, if not even more advanced protocols. Would you have considered that a down?

  • @mademedothis424

    I mean, they gloss over it, but the implication is that Okana knows how to do the shield trick (as in the specific frequencies to use) because he smuggles in and out of the neutral zone, which they do explain more in the next episode. The Dauntless could do it if they knew the right setup, but the Protostar crew has every reason to assume they don't.

    You do feel for Jankom because we're looking at him through our lens, not Tellarites' social norms. For all we know this was the equivalent of a polite greeting between fellow Tellarites. Poor Jankom doesn't understand his own cultural etiquette at this point. I'm glad this didn't get an actual down.

    Definite "Timeless" homage with the Protostar in the ice, as well as the coats the crew are wearing. Loved the Starfleet winter-wear Admiral Janeway and the Dauntless crew have though, which I'd definitely love to have this Winter! Gotta love the moment Hologram Janeway's booted-up again and thinks the others have been away for months or years, when it's just been a few hours. Finally, your point about the new Murf firing the torpedoes, it reminds me of a couple of TNG episodes. "Hero Worship" made the point of stating that there's no way young Timothy could've dropped affected the systems on a ship by falling against a console, as Starfleet consoles need a user ID to operate. But there's also one of the episodes with Lwaxana in where she's looking at the Tactical console and is like, "Mr Woof, what does THIS button do?" and Worf's rather alarmed, jumping forward and saying, "MADAM! That is the torpedo launch initiator!" So, it's somewhat murky about whether simply leaning against a console can do anything or not.

      @@earnestbrown6524 It would be better to do that, but that`s the theme of this episode. overall the episode feels like set up they needed to get to, so they rush it. a lot of things could have been changed to make the episode smoother. for example, it would have been better if Jankom was bragging about being Talorite royalty only to get the star fleet shut him down without Jankom seeing the badge. but as the episode stands it makes Jankom seen as incompetent for not explaining the weapon and the addition of Gwyn and Dal makes the misunderstanding feel annoying to watch. alone Gwyn and Dal were ok. Gwyn was shocked about hearing about her father, and Dal was overwhelmed being in the presence of Janeway. hologram Janeway has become a mentor/mother figure for him. so those 2 make sense.

    As for Murph's bum vs Riker's: only one of the is wearing trousers. Star Fleet likely programs many variations into the bio-sensors for variations of "Is *this* a digit?", so if Cmdr Riker had sat his fuzzy face against the console rather than his bum, he likely *would* have fired a missile or worse.

I would think that the first season is going to wrap with VA Janeway ends up on the Protostar with the gang and they are searching for Chakotay and the missing crew. But that the initial story with the Diviner will be wrapped up and/or modulated into season 2.

    I think I have an explanation for the torpedo thing. They was not the first time they accidentally fired a torpedo. You have to remember they essentially jailbroke the Protostar, so normal safeties against butt-pressing are probably not functioning.
    And in defense of the modulating the shield thing, size could be an issue. A ship as small as the Protostar could escape sensors doing it while the Dauntless is too big to mask itself from sensors. If you could high any ship by doing this, it's essentially a cloak without invisibility.

    Sean, Dal can not just join Star Fleet he is not a know species from A federation planet. Janeway knows that he would need a sponsor to get into Star Fleet that is a big but, even if that is not what Dal wanted to say.
