There were a number of references to classic non-Trek films in this episode. You mentioned Brando in “Apocalypse Now.” The Paramount Mountain gag is also a callback to (Denise Crosby’s famous grandfather) Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in “Road to Utopia” (Paramount Pictures, 1945). Boimler going off the mountain, screaming, is a clear nod to the famous Goofy yell from Walt Disney’s “The Art of Skiing” (1941).
Fade in was a fascinating and fun read. He goes into all the details, like how much it cost to make that cocktail reception scene because how expensive the make-up was just for an alien that was visible a few seconds. Loved it.
Krog is probably a parody of Korg from Marvel, and or a Brikar, a species first shown in the non canon novel “Worf’s first adventure,” and is believed to be the species of Rok-Tahk in Prodigy.
Pre-Watch comment: Mariner knows that Cmdr. Ransom would never allow an officer under his command to be endangered unnecessarily, Boimler has a much more limited experience with him and tends to believe ship gossip for some reason, so I suspect one of the ups will be Ransom acting like a 100% Starfleet officer. (and then chasing down Manhaver because he thinks the dude loves danger)
And Ransom gets no ups for knowing that Boimler's actual skillset is great for the mission and gets a down for giving Manhaver exactly the missions that he's implied to be asking for. Sad Face.
Captain Amasov and the U.S.S. Endeavour NCC-71805 (Nebula-class) are both survivors of the Battle of Wolf 359, where they were assigned to lead Attack Wing 9. Recall when Admiral Hanson's last words mentioned an attempt to withdraw and regroup? Hanson was killed moments later in the disastrous failure of the opening phase of the battle, leaving Captain Amasov to assume command of the fleet. The surviving ships regrouped deeper in the Wolf 359 system, where Amasov led the fleet in an experimental & risky swarm attack. While they were unable to destroy the cube, Amasov's unorthodox chaotic tactics would inspire the model for Starfleet's high-mobility skirmishing tactics in the battle with the Borg and the Dominion War several years later. It's not clear if the Endeavour escaped the battle unscathed, but it was clearly intact enough to be returned to service in time for the Klingon Civil War at the end of TNG season four, because the ship's name and matching registry number appear in Picard's tachyon detection grid fleet. In 2373, that same U.S.S. Endeavour, still captained by Amasov, participated in the Battle of Sector 001 in the opening of Star Trek: First Contact. This part of the script was snipped out in editing, leaving the sole Nebula-class starship seen in the battle unnamed, but that was probably the Endeavour, and the original script verifies Captain Amasov was present.
Wasn’t the Endeavour from another alternate universe? I’m sure there was a line from the Captain of that ship, saying they have an Admiral Millius in their universe, although he milks space whales too. I also took that to be the reason why the Captain’s wearing a TNG-era uniform and commbadge, despite being on an Intrepid Class ship. Anyway, that was a good theory about what race Krog was. But, I think the most obvious parallel is the Kronan character, Korg from various Marvel movies (they just changed the o and the r around in the name!).
Best part of the episode: Mariner knows the seating sections in a theatre. Maybe we will see her in an episode that involves acting. Boimler could mention The Conscience of the King form the Those Old Scientists era.
Being Aussie this jumped out at me… 03:26 Boimler is in the hanger and behind him is the shuttle “Kings Canyon”. Kings Canyon is a system of canyons in the Northern Territory, Australia. The location was used in “Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”.
The tiny Intrepid Class ship, Endeavor, harkens back to the DS9 episode where the shuttlecraft is shrunken in an anomaly and goes on to rescue the Defiant from the Jem'Hadar.
Honestly never saw Apocalypse Now so I missed the references. When I saw the three undercover guys with their hands bound above them, I could only think of the arena in Attack of the Clones. Billups, Ransom, Boimler = Kenobi, Skywalker, Amidala (in no particular order). As for all the theories here about Boimler and his facial hair, I quite like them. Though I get the feeling it just won't ever really grow as impressive as his alternate universe counterpart, let alone any version of Riker.
My personal take on Chet Manhaver, being recruited to do a magma away mission at the end, has me thinking that maybe for a time he enjoyed or was eager to do dangerous away missions like that to the point that he's known to just do them. And now it's just catching up to him that he can't do such or want to do such tasks anymore. But I also agree Ransom shouldn't just assume Chet will enjoy the mission.
I was curious as to whether Krog was intended to be a Brikar, the same race as Rok-Tahk from Star Trek: Prodigy (race created by Peter David for the Star Trek Starfleet Academy novellas).

Best part of the episode: Mariner knows the seating sections in a theatre. Maybe we will see her in an episode that involves acting. Boimler could mention The Conscience of the King form the Those Old Scientists era.
I figured the microscopic intrepid class ship was a throw back to the DS9 episode where they uncover a miniature universe
Wasn’t the Endeavor mentioned in the TNG episode “The Game” as one of the ships to be rendezvoused with to distribute the game?
Being Aussie this jumped out at me…
03:26 Boimler is in the hanger and behind him is the shuttle “Kings Canyon”. Kings Canyon is a system of canyons in the Northern Territory, Australia.
The location was used in “Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”.
I also thought they cosmic duchess might have been a reference to the 1994 snl sketch with picard as the captain of the pacific princess cruise ship.
The Admiral is named for the guy who helped write Apocalypse Now, John Milius. Who is a fantastic writer and director, as well
krog reminded me of korg from marvel which is also he name of a music instrument compnay that makes keyboards, synthesizers and sumplers
The tiny Intrepid Class ship, Endeavor, harkens back to the DS9 episode where the shuttlecraft is shrunken in an anomaly and goes on to rescue the Defiant from the Jem'Hadar.
Actually, it’s not a shuttlecraft, it’s a runabout, the USS Rubicon. The episode is “One Little Ship (6x14).
"THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS," he screams, then takes a drink of his daiquiri, mindful not to poke himself with the little umbrella.
Adm. Milius is named is named after John Milius who wrote the screenplay for Apocalypse Now. Milius also wrote the screenplay for Conan among others.
Another one, well done. Thank you Seán...

Sean my friend, you have never faced breaking up with the overwhelming flood of insecurity and fear. 1:18
4:45 omg! I didn't notice the title graphics either! 🤦🏻♀️
Happy halloween. Did you notice the blob eat everything except bounced off the trees
I was curious as to whether Krog was intended to be a Brikar, the same race as Rok-Tahk from Star Trek: Prodigy (race created by Peter David for the Star Trek Starfleet Academy novellas).
(John) Milius was also one of the screenwriters on Apocalypse Now
