    This instructional video will teach us how to apply primer to a fiberglass car or a Chevy Corvette. Polyester Primer is the key component to doing it yourself on this custom car restoration project!
    We use Evercoat Feather Fill G2 as our Base Primer to seal in all the fiberglass and major body work that was performed to this muscle car 1969 Corvette Stingray.

    Pete, I’m very pleased to see that you have corrected yourself regarding the use of gel coat on Corvettes. There were only two years that gel coat was ever used by the factory in the production of Corvettes, 1953 and 1954, when panels were hand laid. Starting with 1955, panels were press molded and gel coat was no longer used.

    I might try that G2 stuff on the next car I paint ('65 Econoline Truck). I tried the U-POL stuff that you have, I thought it was a little tough to sand. It's good enough though, and a great price. As far as budget primers, I liked the Shermin Williams Acme1 2K High Build. It's $40 more expensive but I liked it. Also, the Acme1 clearcoat is my go to clear coat from now on. I just use cheap Restoration Shop Low Voc base coat and haven't had any problems. I don't know where to get normal basecoat that isn't low voc and will ship to CA.

    Great video Pete! I had no idea about this type of primer and the acetone. A lot of guys use razor blades to strip the paint off. Not sure about this, seems like you can gouge the car doing that. I have a 1970 so no gelcoat like you said. In any event, a lot of work for sure compared to a regular steel body car.

    • @povertygarage705
      @povertygarage705 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will definitely have lots of little scratches and gouges in the factory primer/sealer from using a razor blade to strip the paint, but you also end up with a very imperfect gouged up and sloppy surface if you use ordinary paint stripper as well. There's always a lot of body work after stripping one of these cars.

    Can Nason acrylic primer reduced with lacquer thinner be used under acrylic enamel single stage on corvettes? Or will it seep into the fiberglass substrate and bubble the topcoat paint later on? I use it all the time on steel cars and Never have an issue. I have only painted 2 Corvettes, and on 1 I did get a couple bubbles/blisters, just not sure if it was because of the Lacquer thinner in the primer. And on that one I non chemically stripped it down. I currently own 3 Corvette convertibles a 1975, 1987 and a 2002 that all need paint. On my 02 I have some of the fiberglass around the edge of the doors starting to show. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    Hi Pete! Long time viewer! Been watching your videos for years. I have a question... I have a 1957 Corvette that is in need of restoration. I am sure you must be familiar with what happens to this old fiberglass over the years. It develops what is called spider cracks over the entire fiberglass body, but especially pronounced in the corners of openings. In these locations the cracks can be fairly wide, relatively speaking. Can you tell me how to proceed with addressing this problem and dealing with these spider cracks? Thanks!

    • @markd4838
      @markd4838 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I doubt Pete will get back to you as he has not responded to any of my questions... But then I know he's busy working for a living... I too am restoring a C1 and have similar spider cracks in certain areas... I first use a die grinder with pointed tip to get to bottom of the crack (through the gel coat)... If only a minor crack in the gel coat I fill it with a fiberglass reinforced body filler such as Bondo Glass or Dyna Glass... In the corner openings I actually sand the entire spider cracked area down to the fiberglass and create a flat area which I fill with small pieces of fiberglass mat and resin... Then sand it down and finish off the area with body filler... Pete uses a paste he makes by putting cut pieces of mat into the resin that would work for medium to large sized cracks....This inexpensive 3/8 in. Belt Air Sander from Harbor Freight has proved very useful for this process... www.harborfreight.com/38-in-belt-air-sander-60627.html ... Also make sure you seal these areas at some point during your priming process.... Hope this helps... Cheers... Mark

    Man you have to use a respirator with acetone just protecting your skin is not enough your doing a large area unless you have tons of ventilation which it does not look like you have, preferably a full face one so the vapors cannot enter your eyes also to make sure you have the proper cartridge or cartridges I believe its the yellow one for acids and solvents the green is ammonia and pink is dust but make sure to check. Better safe then possibly ending up like your friends.

    "The Department of Health and Human Services and the International Agency for
    Research on Cancer have not classified acetone for carcinogenic effects. The EPA has determined that acetone is not classifiable as to its human carcinogenicity." = it is not known to cause cancer in humans - hence highly unlikely the person died from brain cancer caused from exposure to acetone (it also occurs naturally in our bodies) - BUT - always better to be safe than sorry and always wear gloves with any chemical used in the automotive industry. Me - I wear gloves for everything - paint - filler - thinners - etc - as mentioned - better to be safe than sorry. Sometimes with high viscosity products, I store the can upside down. And if stored the right way up and if there is a thick layer at the bottom of the can - I first use a slicing motion with the thin edge of the stirring stick before then finally using the wide side of the stick to get a uniform mix.
