SLICK TRICK SS3 Broadhead Test

- This is a test of the Slick Trick SS3, 100 gr broadhead.
I'm using a Bowtech SR6 at 72# & 27" draw length and Bishop FOC King Arrows, 460 grs.

In case you're not familiar with my new test protocol, here is what I'm doing now:
1. Flight Test--1 field point & 2 broadheads out my by Bowtech SR6 at 40 yds, to see how well they group together.
2. Sharpness Test: I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention.
What are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
3. Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.
4. Penetration Test 1: one shot into a combined medium of 2/3" of rubber mat, 1/2" MDF and Clear Ballistics FBI Grade Gel. This is to roughly simulate the tissue of an animal--hide, bone and muscle/fat.
5. Penetration Test 2: one shot into layers of cardboard.
6. Durability Test: For fixed blade heads, I take up to 5 shots into .22 ga steel plate and then evaluate the damage to the head. This is a good test to see the overall durability of the blades, as well as their connection to the ferrule. For mechanical heads, I take up to 5 shots into 1/2" MDF and then evaluate the damage to the head.
7. Concrete Test. This is a zero penetration test, which is a good test of the overall structural integrity of a head.
NOTE: Of course I understand we don't hunt steel plates and concrete, but all of these tests simply provide DATA POINTS for you to use in determining which broadhead is best for your hunting purposes. A well placed shot with pretty much any broadhead will get the job done most of the time. But why not prepare for the worst and buy the best you can?
If one head can hold up to multiple shots in steel & concrete-and another cannot--all other things equal, wouldn't you want to use the head that can withstand the steel and concrete? And after taking hundreds of animals with my bow, I've seen some bone shots cause more damage to a broadhead than even a cinder block.
The goal for all of us is to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible, and select a broadhead that is as lethal as possible for our bow/arrow set up and for the animal we are hunting.
At the end of each of my broadhead tests, you will find a score sheet listing all the results of the testing, so you can compare heads based on what factors matter to you the most. I also have an overall LUSK GRADE that is an evaluation of how the head performed in all the tests combined.

Nice tutorial on how to do the sandpaper sharpening. I’ve used that technique many times as a professional woodworker especially when restoring a tool that has been abused. Be sure to put a very flat backing behind the sandpaper such as glass or flat polished granite.
Thanks Nick. In this case the backing is curved, but also very smooth; it changes the bevel angle from 60 degrees to 44.
Super impressed with this one! Especially after using the sharpener. A really tough well made broadhead for a reasonable amount of $. Now let's see the same thing in a 1 1/4'' - 1 3/8'' Lets also add a small set of cuts in the rear to attach a 3 blade insert like the Kudu Plus has its 2 blade insert. Just maybe the same 5/8'' size of the Kudu to get the additional bleeder effect.
Yep, I prefer a larger cut as well, unless I'm hunting a really big animal--like Tooth of the Arrow XL or Exodus.

Yes, similar to the Ozcut Elite 3 blade.
This may be the best you’ve tested. Between penetration and the way it held together . For the price this is a tough competitor for the price compared to some of these expensive single bevels. Wish i had held off on the aliens and got these
They are really good--one of the best. I prefer a wider cut, personally. And the Exodus performed extremely well--posting that in a few days. Also, for the price, the Deepower all steel head did very well also.
Actually interested in these as I hope to be hunting a 3 blade minimum area later in the year 😁

It might be too subjective to the weight & balance of your arrow build. Not many people shooting those Bishop arrows.

Great review! Slick Trick looks like a good broadhead. I might try this broadhead this deer season. BTW, steel products are mostly black oxide finish. Anodizing is a coating/finishing process done on aluminum products.

I've shot them in the past, but not tested them. I'd sure like to, but they won't respond to my requests to send me heads to test.
I don’t know if I’m the only one but I would like to see one more edge retention test after the cardboard penetration. These are great videos regardless though!
Thanks for the comment. I have considered that. However, it wouldn't be a fair test, because there is a significant difference in how many layers of cardboard the heads penetrate thru. Some have done as many as 65 and others 45--almost 50% difference. Those that don't penetrate thru as many layers would "retain" their edge much more than those that penetrate deeply. The penetration in MDF/Rubber Mat & Gel also vary, but no where near as much, and the difference is all in Gel, so it doesn't make a quantifiable difference in edge retention.
I used a Nicholson pipeliner file its curved did some monotech broadheads they were super sharp
Also buy the pre-season heads monotech has and save money

I think you need to quantify the accuracy during the field test by measuring the distance between the broadhead and the field tip arrows.
Naw, There’s way too much human error to make that effective. If I used a Hooter Shooter, I’d do it. But it wouldn’t be fare with my free hand shooting. I’m just seeing if they basically have the same point Of impact.

Well, in most cases yes...but wait till you see the Exodus. That's coming soon.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures with velocities over 300 fps and especially velocities over 375 fps many broadheads have less predictable flight and wind resistance. I've found the short profile helps minimize this. The Exodus works well out of my crossbows (Shoulders wont handle the compound bows anymore) at over 400 fps.

Yep...there are not many larger cut single piece heads...but Tooth of the Arrow XL does make one.
Love the content! I would love to see how bishop holy trinity does with your new tests...... I bought a set last season and unfortunately wasn't able to take an animal with them yet. I have not doubts about their durability but I do have concerns about the 60 degree bevel and it limiting the sharpness of the head. What are your thoughts on that?
That's a good question. a 60 degree bevel will only get "so sharp." However, that will not affect penetration at all. I did a test recently where I dulled the blades of one two blade head with a file--like super dull. And then had another of the same heads that was super sharp. In a penetration test, like I do for Penetration Test 1, the difference was less than 1/2". Edge integrity is much more of a factor in penetration than actual felt sharpness. With the Bishops, those edges just don't chatter. That being said, a sharper head will cut the tissue more effectively as it penetrates, at least in theory, which will result in cleaner cuts and greater bloodletting.
You can always use the Stay Sharp 344 on the Holy Trinity to make it even sharper than it is.

Great review. John, do you have any experience whit this big angle(60-44degree) blade broadhead in hunting? What about bloody capacity?
I have used it in hunting. It definitely makes them a lot sharper. How that translates into blood trails would depend on where you hit, more than anything. But all things equal, it should increase blood trails, but making the wound channel more difficult to clot.

Will the head still be “effective” without using the Stay Sharp? I have a standard stone and was going to sharpen 60 degrees
Yes it will...plenty effective. Just not as sharp.

Yeah, but just with a pull thru sharpener. You can also use a Stay Sharp Guide "C" sharpener, as it's designed for curved blades.
John, do you have a running score sheet for all your tests? If so, where? You refer to the score sheet in all your videos, but I can't find it!

The score sheet is posted at the end of every video...right after I post the Lusk Grade. You can always take a screen shot of those and compare them. I also posted a Summary of all the scores of heads tested in 2020 in a video at the end of December 2020, called 2020 Scoring Summary or something like that. I posted a summary of all the scores in 2021 thru March on my Facebook Page--Lusk Archery Adventures. I am in the process of creating a website that I will keep updating the scores sheets on.

I watched your review of the annihilator broadhead and compared it to this one. I think the annihilator did better on the concrete test, no damage to the tip.
I forgot the stats, but the slick trick seemed sharper, is that true?
Yes on both parts, I believe. But both did very well...and the SS1 has a larger cut.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I just bought the slick trick broadheads, I had purchased the annihilator's and killed one deer with it. Huge hole, but spotty blood trail. My guess is they need to be sharper, as you suggest.
would it do any good to spray the heads with silicone to prevent rusting and aid in penetration?
Are these available in 125 grain? If not, they should be.
Nope, at least not yet. I agree.
How long does it take to change the bevel angle?
That's a good question. To get them really sharp with the 344 Guide takes about 20 mins or so. I do it while I'm watching TV or listening to a podcast.

what would you recommend for white tail 40yards and in?
Yes, they will certainly get the job done. Personally, I prefer a larger cut for whitetail...like a good mech (Sevr is my favorite) or a larger cut fixed blade (Exodus & Tooth of the Arrow XL are two of my favorites). But any good head, like this one, will get the job done with a good shot--shot placement is 90% of the issue. These are great for lighter set ups or animals larger than deer.
I would go Sevr 1.5 or Exodus. Those heads are reliable, cut great, and Afordable. White tails are not too tough to get penetration on so focus on getting good flight, having your overall setup dialed in right and being well practiced.

Yeah, I should do that. I did many of the tests but not all of this new format. They are one of the best heads for the price on the market.
How do these compare to the annihilators?
Well, both are great heads--in flight, durability, and penetration. Personally, I prefer the larger cut of the SS3 over the Annihilator for deer sized animals. But I also really prefer a larger cut than the SS3 for deer as well...like a Tooth of the Arrow XL or Exodus, for example.
If it came in a 125 or a 150 I'd be all over that!

I just picked up a pack of these and was really underwhelmed with how dull they were (granted I know you are supposed to sharpen new broadheads out of the package) but you also should not be able to run your finger up and down the edge either.
Well, that's what happens with 60 degree bevels--30 on each side. They will only get "so" sharp. Now, it's plenty sharp enough to zip thru an animal that's for sure. But if you want them super sharp, get a Stay Sharp Guide 344, cause it changes the bevel to 44 degrees.

He did say you “absolutely should not be able to run your fingers along the edge” and to send them back so they can review and send a new sharpened set out (which I appreciated).

I did that test in the vid--did you see it? That's one of the main tests I do--Initial or Out of the Box Sharpness. The score is always listed at the end of the vid as well.

@@ishotapig I know the lower the number the better. I think it measures how much force it takes to cut through a wire. Less force = sharper blade

Yeah, I'm not a believer in some of his research, honestly. But penetration does largely depend on the medium being shot into. These tests only measure that with the two Penetration Tests I do--the rubber mat/MDF/FBI Gel and then the layered cardboard. Both of those tend to "stick" to a broadhead, so the less the surface area, the better. More liquid/lubricated mediums can be a different story. But then again, bone and hide and tendon are not very "liquid" based either.

Not going to lie I’d really like to know what would happened if you should shot a deer with it in the shoulder would it go In deep Enough to kill or would it blow through? Or would it stop dead
I think it would penetrate better than most heads. But it depends on where in the shoulder. Scapula would be a non issue, but the ball joint itself could be for sure. Largely depends on the bow/arrow set up and specs. The head should hold up and do its part.

Good comparison. I post the score sheets at the end of each vid so you can see how they compare in the same tests. I am also planning to do a new test of the Tooth of the Arrow, including the XL Solid, thru my 2021 protocol.
