To be fair, Elden ring does have a pretty hefty delay after you press the button before a roll actually executes. This is down to the fact that the developers decided to double bind roll / sprint on the same button, which means the software code needs to work out whether you intended to roll or simply sprint. The game doesn't even start processing your button press until you release the button. The boss fights in elden rings are spectacular but the combat is worse in every way as compared to older soul games and in particular NIOH 2.
@@giglioflexCouple things: Sprint was also bound to roll in the prior titles, this does not explain the feel of a delay in elden ring. I’m not denying the existence of the delay, it does feel like it’s there, but that’s not why. I’m really here to contend with the “combat is worse in every way” statement, because it’s just odd. Having just come off a recent DS3 all bosses play through, there’s a few things I want to say on the subject. Firstly, I do appreciate DS3’s approach to combat. It’s snappy in a way that all of the other games save for Bloodborne and Sekiro lack. What really contributes to the difference in feel between DS3 and Elden Ring, I think, is the approach to hitstun. DS3 almost always allows you to escape combos (not absolutely always, but there’s usually an out provided). From both an enemy and boss design standpoint, many more enemies in elden ring, buy especially bosses, are capable of forcing more hits out of a single mistake than they probably should. That’s both a matter of attack speed and what seems to be an increased hitstun duration, but I cannot confirm the latter. But to say that the combat is worse across the board is flat out wrong. There is much more depth to Elden Ring’s combat. DS3 is refined, yes. But Elden Ring makes playing in a variety of different styles practical and entertaining in ways DS3 consistently fails to do. Case in point: playing DS3 with a shield pretty much sucks. They’re not so great at blocking damage, and the stamina loss is just too much on a consistent basis. Elden ring remedies this in a few ways, but I think the most profound have to do with offensive capabilities. One of my runs of elden ring was a stagger focused sword and board build, and I do mean board: I used a partial block wooden shield. Not everything can be blocked, and that’s a good thing. But calculated and well timed blocks can be excellent for maintaining pressure, and guard counters do substantial poise damage. Utilized correctly, shields in elden ring can be a tool for increased aggression rather than their typically passive role in prior games aside from parries. That’s only one example. Using a slower, lower dps weapon for bosses can be effective due to the poise system. Faster weapons can get in attacks mid combo much of the time, allowing for hyper aggressive playstyles. Magic is far less boring. Hitstun against enemies and the diversity of movesets, the utility of weapon skills and the customization that comes with ashes of war, they all come together to make an all around more interesting combat system than DS3, even if at times it lacks the same refinement. DS3’s greatest triumph is it’s consistency, nothing ever feels like bs. Elden Ring has its share of BS, but that goes both ways. A friend of mine ended up on a build so powerful he did 14k straight damage to Mohg and his first attempt, which outright killed him before the phase transition. That was on a first playthrough with no wiki. Elden Ring is far from perfect, but it’s anything but boring or subpar. Every weapon and ability is a tool, and they’re all used in a fairly diverse set of ways that I find incredibly enjoyable. There’s so many different ways to approach any given situation, and most of them are viable. And yeah, sometimes it does feel annoying. You’ll hit B and find yourself standing right where you started, eating 1000 damage to the face for bo discernible reason. But most of the time their still IS a reason, it’s just not as cut and dry as dark souls, where you know you just mistimed your input. Direction matters, and attacks are often a little harder to read with lots of off tempo timings. The fact that some combos trap you is for better and for worse intentional, and once you know which ones do, it’s now your fault if you let it happen again. The overall loop hasn’t changed: you die, and you learn. There’s so much more to learn in Elden Ring, and that’s why I love it. I love DS3, too, for how fair and refined combat is. You’re never ridiculously strong relative to your enemies, and they’re never overbearing (except Halflight, fuck that guy). I can’t say honestly that one is consistently better than the other in every way, because it’s just flat out not true. Elden ring absolutely does things worse than other games they’ve made, but it knocks it out of the park just as often, and to ignore it’s highs just isn’t giving the game a fair shake.

"A video game where a forever baby in a hairy cocoon is captured by a blood daddy with a trident" is perhaps my favorite way I've ever heard Mohg and Miquella described. 😂😂😂
I love this explanation as it fits well with my head cannon. For me the "Lands Between" is the existence between thought and action. With each choice a player makes bringing them closer to actual movement, for better or worse. Hence why you can respawn infinitely and yet some decisions cannot be taken back once they've occurred.
I would call them more like the “Lands Between Ages”, since time still passes there, but it would be impossible to get there without taking an “Age” to do so. Which makes me wonder, how did-was it Godfrey?-and his Tarnished army leave to fight wars beyond the Lands Between? Hell, what about the Land of Reeds?? (Personally, I think the name is just a name; it probably meant something in the ancient times before Marika and the Erdtree, but thanks to the conquests of the Golden Order, that name is more of a vestigial title)
Elden Ring even includes more of this. Farum Azula was hit with such a cataclysmic amount of energy when Placidusax and Godfrey fought, that it not only shattered the city, it ripped it outside of time. Ranni's entire goal is to gather all these obnoxious gods up, and literally haul them all into deep space and keep them there, forever trapped in the black between the stars, where they can't hurt anyone else.
So, I’m no expert and I’ve never even played Elden ring, but based on your model, wouldn’t the Lands Between, in order to remain outside your light cone over time, have to either: A. Move in space over time, at the speed of light, in relation to your light cone (and presumably everyone else’s) to stay out of them B. Cease to exist at a time before you can reach them, making them literally just, not real in your time, or C. Exist in a singular place so far away from anyone’s light cone that they never intersect, presumably in infinite distance so you can’t cheat the system by making your journey a generational one. The most logical answer for a static place in space being C, wouldn’t that just make the Lands Between… like, the Lands Really Really Far Away?
I was looking for this comment and yea theoretically the light cone only stops you from getting to a point in space at a specific point in time given enough time you should be able to get to any point in space just fine I was waiting the whole video for him to mention it I'm kinda surprised he didn't
@@sailingadventurerRight, so his theory is still valid. I’m just saying when you think about it, this video could kinda be summed up by saying “they’re actually just too far away.” Not that I’d want it to be, cause I love Kyle’s vids 😁 but I’m just saying.
I don't think this video is up to Kyle's standards for a complete explanation. Given the model he illustrated (at least local enough to be a flat, static universe), any event in spacetime should be reachable from any worldline. Even if it's elsewhere in the present, my future light cone caught it at some point in the past, and my past light cone will catch it at some point in the future. *Everywhere* except yourself is "elsewhere" in the present. My computer screen is technically elsewhere in my present, it's just that I can see how it was in my past (distance/c time ago) when it left my past light cone, and I can send information that will affect it in the future (distance/c time from now), when it hits my future light cone. Any place "elsewhere" is plenty accessible, you just have to wait a bit.
Lore wise, the lands between is like the purgatory. It's somehow a place both material and immaterial, coherent and incoherent, aggregates several "notions" from all FromSoftware games without clearly showingor naming them. You shouldn't be there, but you're there.
not sure about YT vids but the 3Body books are much more accurate than this video IMO, I think Kyle is mistaken about higher dimensional space. The 4D bubbles in 3 body helped me visualise the 4th dimension, it's extremely difficult to describe but I use time to translate the object in the 4th dimension. in reality it's just visualising a 3d shadow of the 4d object "cut" into 3 dimensions. IMO if you wanted to explain Elden rings world then just imagining it's just arbitrarily distant like in this video is not very interesting. One of the ideas posited by theoretical physicists that I think meshes with this world is the idea that there are higher dimensions that aren't accessible at normal energies/scales "folded" away, moving in the "nonexistent" dimension potentially allowing you to "move" to "adjacent" "universes". Imagine our "universe" as a page in a book, right next to other universes that are inaccessible yet adjacent. penrose diagrams geometrically imply white holes that spit out the matter absorbed by black holes into a region of space that disallows communication with any region of space originally accessible around the black hole (like a second event horizon indistinguishable from the normal event horizon of a black hole). it's unprovable but fits the fantasy and reality much better than "in a galaxy far far away"
Okay, so you can’t have a 4th physical dimension anywhere but within mathematics, but the lands between exist entirely in a computer simulation powered by math, then they could be in a 4th dimension, right?
5:30 isn't the time cone diagram just the map of yourself, so doesnt it reason that any other object would have its own time cone, meaning that over time you could interact with object that are in elsewhere over enough time.
7:48 we well not hear a single word against our Lord Mogh! It has been proven that not only he was not the Moghlester but the one who got Moghlested instead.
Calling him George 'Rail Road' Martin has to be the least applicable nickname ever. He can't even keep his characters on rails, he just lets them roam however they like, forcing him to come up with questlines, locations and interesting loot on the fly. And those new characters then have their own NPC AI, that can just make them throw themselves into the path of another character, completely messing up the intended questline they were on; or have that NPC become a player character, because they're just so interesting to maneuver around.
"I am the Eschaton. I am not your god. I am descended from you, and I exist in your future. Thou shalt not violate causality within my historic light cone."
just in case you did not know this if the roll button did not work you might have spammed a little too much - the game kinda remembers your last inputs, so if you spam you will not do the action you are currently pressing but the last few you have already pressed
A lot of fantasy settings have "planes" that are at different points along some kind of 4th dimension. Authors have described them as fully overlapping, but impossible to reach or interact with by human means. Sometimes those planes are more spiritual, other times they are at different points between "complete chaos" and "complete order". I like to think of it as this 4th dimension being quantized such that space can only exist at specific points, so particles in our plane can't cross over because they don't have the energy to jump to another plane. "In between" would then refer to the infinity of points along this 4th dimension but aren't aligned with the points in which space can exist, which by my own definition, would not be able to support space.

CS Lewis also had a land between worlds in the last two books of his Narnia series. It was featured in "The Magician's Nephew." The Magician sent his nephew and nephew's friend to the land between worlds with one ring. Once there, they could change to another and jump in a pool and go to another world. The Witch from "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" was the last living person in a third, dying world. The nephew brought her to a new world, Narnia, as it was being created. He also brought the first line of kings from the line of Adam at that time and a bit of lamppost that would be the lamppost that the Pevencys saw when they came through the wardrobe.
“I’m not mad, I just.. I pressed roll.” Is such a mood. Pretty much sums up Elden ring before I got bloodhounds fang and blood flame blade incantation. Now it’s thee who wished they pressed roll
I always thought the lands between were called the lands between since Elden ring seems to borrow some ideas from Norse and midgard is between many of the other realms. Also tbe lands between could be a continent surrounded by fog and outside of that fog are other lands such as “land of reeds” or the “badlands”
Something about Elden Ring that interests me is the nature of death root/death blight -ie the corpse of Godwyn. It seems to spread to every part of the lands between, including crumbling Farum Azula which is a floating city. So death blight is not limited to areas connected to the ground nor is it limited to the lands between, as it can be found in the land of shadow, meaning that it can spread to other plains of existence.
The Lands Between are literally the lands between other land, across the geographical fog. There are other lands in the world, The Land of Reeds, The Highlands, The Badlands, etc. There is also the Shadow realm, which is another separate geographic location placed directly in the center of the world, the implications of a 'center' is unclear.
My issue with this is that the "elsewhere" is not just a point in space, but a point in time. You can never reach that point in both time _and_ space, but you should still be able to reach that point in time _or_ space. The expectation then is that you could, at some point in the future, get to that physical location. The Lands Between would then be a place that you could physically get to, albeit far after the events of the game (assuming the events of the game are happening "now"). Something more interesting is the idea of a physical location that _can't_ be reached, no matter how hard you try. Parts of our universe are receding from us at faster than light speeds, meaning not only can we not physically go there, but eventually we won't even be able to see them anymore. And yet, they'll still exist, and we can preserve the knowledge that they once existed even if they can no longer be seen or accessed. That said, I still think the Lands Between are some kind of afterlife. Perhaps a purgatory of sorts meant to temporarily hold souls before they proceed to their "final destination". Therefore they are between Life and Death. Destined Death is when your soul moves on to its final afterlife, while other forms of death allow the soul to remain in the Lands Between and be reborn. Also curiously, the tarnished seem to have been sent back to the lands of the living, and return to the Lands Between through death.
Yes, we can identify a fourth dimension, even a fifth, with relative ease. Graphing 3 dimensions is fairly easy with 2 dimensions, but you need to use 3 dimensions to graph 4. Step 1: acknowledge that spacetime is the medium for the graph, not the two-dimensional rotation. Step 2: acknowledge that incorporating the light cones to represent forward and backward travel in possibility is thus representative of time, conceptually. - Dimension 4: plotted trajectory within a light cone, representing history - spissitude, despite that title being contested, progression and regression. Easy to see in a 3D representation. - Dimension 5: light cone cloud, representing possibility - similitude, convergence and divergence. We'd likely need a 4D representation, but we can see its 'ghosts' in a 3D representation.
@@Brandon-bc1fz Yeah I think he's forgetting that any three dimension thing we 'graph' in a 2D space, i.e. a piece of paper, is only a projection of the shadow of that 3D object. It's *not* the 3D object, and you have less than the full amount of information about it (no, things like colouring edges doesn't count, as that's in effect invoking an extra non-space-like dimension).
@@AthAthanasius No, I'm not forgetting that. I'm just summarizing the actual application of the equations and math Kyle keeps referencing - they're not hard to understand, they're just misrepresented by popular media. I'm agreeing with the principles Kyle is putting out there, but saying that Kyle's challenge is itself a misrepresentation. The position that what I'm saying is either new or wrong is one that's just less informed, with what I summarize merely being given a spin to fit the video. It's taking the 'antitheist' route instead of the 'atheist' one.
Elsewhere still makes no sense as a LOCATION, because it's definited by your Lightcone (or rather, where you Lightcone doesn't reach), but that Lightcone is based on SpaceTIME, meaning that you just can get to a Location in your "Elsewhere" at a specific time, but you can reach that location at another time in the future (where it's within your Lightcone). So Star Wars' "A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Far Away" is already "Elsewhere", as our Lightcone can't reach that Galaxy during the time where it's happening, as it's already in the past. And if it's far enough away, then maybe the Lightcone of that Galaxy during that time doesn't include us yet, thus we couldn't know of the existence of that Galaxy yet.
The lands between could be parallel 3d spaces accessed by moving along the rolled up extra dimensions in string theory. These extra dimensions exist "between" any two points in 3d space and moving along one could take you from one 3d slice (or "Brane-World" in string theory) to another.
You should totally do an episode on Destiny paracausality and the repercussions of using these powers (like using nuclear fusion in combat) on the world around you
I was hoping we'd get more, like how the scadu world exists in the past and present (and maybe future), and how moving through different areas changes when you are.
Back to tesseract problem: Inability to stack 3D dimensions in space is only true if we agree that we live in universally 3 dimensions. However the same as we can imagine stacking 2 dimensional universes in 3 dimensions, just like pages in the book, the same can be true about 3 dimensional universes in 4 dimension above-universe. We can't imagine it, only project, but it doesn't mean it can't exist.

Thanks for rhe update on the song of ice and fire books! I'll go looking for that fan made version instead. Martin out out a chapter like 8 years ago as a teaser and we all ate it up
I’ve always considered extra dimensions as described in pop culture that you discuss early on to be basically other worlds that occupy the same 3D coordinates but are shifted in a fourth dimension. Thus parallel worlds and a 4th dimension are identical concepts. The 4th dimension obviously wouldn’t exist within the existing 3rd ones, but it’d share a theoretical 4 dimensional axis with them
Such things are fun to think about, but they also need to explain why the forces/interactions we know about don't also propogate in the extra spatial dimenson... and if they do then why, e.g. gravity still falls off with the square of distance (remember, that applies with General Relativity, not only Newtonian Gravity), and not some other power. Thought experiments about gravity and other-numbers-of-dimensons spaces end up with gravity acting very differently.
Does this explain lovecraft? "The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Not in the spaces we know, but between them. They walk serene and primal, undimensioned and to us unseen."
Claims he "understands" . Bro had me laughing in first minute, fantastic. Great stuff, packed full of enough comedy to keep you hooked while also very thought provoking.
Contemplating a 4th dimension is like a 1 dimensional object contemplating a 2nd dimension. We can move a point or stick a line on it and the point will never know
You were SO CLOSE to actually explaining why enemies respawn and how every civilization in the LB is still huskin' around: When order was shattered, spacetime muddied and stagnated. You can time travel in Elden Ring by walking.
If Black holes distort light cones towards the singularity. Does that mean the ending where the player marries Rhanni is inevitable on a long enough time horizon since the cut scene ends in front of what looks like a black hole? The screen fades to black at the end. Is the cut scene the final event the player sees before crossing the event horizon?
As much as I enjoy the topic of light cones, I can't see how that postulates some "other realm" that someone could (not) be in. That's just the physical regions of the universe (the vast majority of it) that you simply cannot be due to the speed limit of light. That would make Elden Ring no more "in between" than Ganymede is, hardly fantastical. Unless I am quite misunderstanding the depiction of movement through space relative to the passage of time(?): Light cones represent the range of possibilities of your physical position/whatever relative to a given point of your timeline, bounded by the speed of light because that's just the fastest you could theoretically go. For any practical use, the cone angles/bounds should be adjusted relative to the subject's actual speed potential. If you cannot realistically move in any manner faster than 120 miles per hour then that should affect the light cone appropriately. (You could still have the light-speed limit shown, just as the absolute extreme theoretical possibility even though it is unrealistic by every known standard.) And I'm yet to be convinced that the past-cone is actually a cone at all. If you were to follow any different path in reverse, you instantly detach yourself from all other past influences that led to the initial point in time that you started from. After all, nothing happens in true isolation which gives similar issue as the Three Body Problem (especially because there are always far far more bodies than three influencing everything about everything).

I love this explanation as it fits well with my head cannon. For me the "Lands Between" is the existence between thought and action. With each choice a player makes bringing them closer to actual movement, for better or worse. Hence why you can respawn infinitely and yet some decisions cannot be taken back once they've occurred.
My theory is its just another way to translate "midgard"
As in "middle earth"

It's a good idea, but it would imply the existence of a countably infinite set of sequels of noticeably lower quality, and we don't want that.

Pleasantly surprised to see an Elden Ring video from Kyle.
So, I’m no expert and I’ve never even played Elden ring, but based on your model, wouldn’t the Lands Between, in order to remain outside your light cone over time, have to either:
A. Move in space over time, at the speed of light, in relation to your light cone (and presumably everyone else’s) to stay out of them
B. Cease to exist at a time before you can reach them, making them literally just, not real in your time, or
I was looking for this comment and yea
theoretically the light cone only stops you from getting to a point in space at a specific point in time
given enough time you should be able to get to any point in space just fine
I was waiting the whole video for him to mention it I'm kinda surprised he didn't
Universe is expanding in an accelerated rate. Vast portions of the Universe will always remain inaccessible to us even if we travel at speed of light

The TH-cam spoilers of “The Three Body Problem” got weird with the explanation of extra dimensions.
not sure about YT vids but the 3Body books are much more accurate than this video IMO, I think Kyle is mistaken about higher dimensional space.
1:13 *Looks suspiciously at TH-cams time bar at the bottom of the video*
Okay, so you can’t have a 4th physical dimension anywhere but within mathematics, but the lands between exist entirely in a computer simulation powered by math, then they could be in a 4th dimension, right?

Calling him George 'Rail Road' Martin has to be the least applicable nickname ever.
He can't even keep his characters on rails, he just lets them roam however they like, forcing him to come up with questlines, locations and interesting loot on the fly. And those new characters then have their own NPC AI, that can just make them throw themselves into the path of another character, completely messing up the intended questline they were on; or have that NPC become a player character, because they're just so interesting to maneuver around.

Okay I definitely need an episode expanding on that "time travel at sublight speeds" thing.
AcTuAlLy, the forever baby made the blood daddy with the trident capture him from his caccoon so the forever baby could because a sort of ghostish thing to travel to his dad-mom's country and the blood daddy with the trident could be killed and his corpse be turned into the meat puppet for the forever baby's brother-consort questionably consenting soul to inhabit and obliterate you with.

You are brilliant kyle, from the idea of the video, to explanation and the funny aspect of it, brilliant!
The chaos of this episode 😂 I love it! Thanks for all the creativity and fun!
If you look in the distance it does seem like the lands between are surrounded
It's so cool that the representation of the finite limit of what we are capable of doing with the time we exist is the shape of an hourglass.
You know it's gonna be a good episode when you're confused after 30 seconds.
I think its just that the concept of death itself has been corrupted because of breaking the ring
"Parallel universes, another concept that so far only exists in complicated equations"
And Mario 64
4:25 RIP Kyle. He talked about one of Roko's creatures a while back and it sealed his fate
Has anyone noticed that "lands between" is just another name for middle earth

Dude, your thumbnails man, they keep getting better and better!
dude you were amazing in furiosa
Ah yeah dude in the TH-cam comments got it all figured out 4th dimension confirmed. Get real lmao.
That thumbnail goes fuckin hard! Nice job

That is actually a pretty good theory on where the land of shadows is located since it’s inaccessible by normal travel in space-time.

You just tricked the player base into learning. XD
Loved the new ending style, making yourself small and you patrons big was classy. Also cool to see Kevins walking around in the background.
My light cones are currently equipped to my choice of assorted space waifus and husbandos.
3:35 nah Kyle's spitting with this one

Claims he "understands" . Bro had me laughing in first minute, fantastic. Great stuff, packed full of enough comedy to keep you hooked while also very thought provoking.
Contemplating a 4th dimension is like a 1 dimensional object contemplating a 2nd dimension. We can move a point or stick a line on it and the point will never know
You were SO CLOSE to actually explaining why enemies respawn and how every civilization in the LB is still huskin' around: When order was shattered, spacetime muddied and stagnated. You can time travel in Elden Ring by walking.
You can time travel in real life by walking, too. Just in one direction, at regular speed. Unless you do cocaine.
Light cone boundary = w-axis??
As much as I enjoy the topic of light cones, I can't see how that postulates some "other realm" that someone could (not) be in. That's just the physical regions of the universe (the vast majority of it) that you simply cannot be due to the speed limit of light. That would make Elden Ring no more "in between" than Ganymede is, hardly fantastical.
Unless I am quite misunderstanding the depiction of movement through space relative to the passage of time(?):
Light cones represent the range of possibilities of your physical position/whatever relative to a given point of your timeline, bounded by the speed of light because that's just the fastest you could theoretically go. For any practical use, the cone angles/bounds should be adjusted relative to the subject's actual speed potential. If you cannot realistically move in any manner faster than 120 miles per hour then that should affect the light cone appropriately. (You could still have the light-speed limit shown, just as the absolute extreme theoretical possibility even though it is unrealistic by every known standard.)
And I'm yet to be convinced that the past-cone is actually a cone at all. If you were to follow any different path in reverse, you instantly detach yourself from all other past influences that led to the initial point in time that you started from. After all, nothing happens in true isolation which gives similar issue as the Three Body Problem (especially because there are always far far more bodies than three influencing everything about everything).
