Replacing Our RV Toilet | Dometic 310 Toilet Review

  • Replacing our RV toilet is not a job I thought we would be doing anytime soon. Our Grand Design 28BH came with the Thetford Aqua Magic Style II. This toilet has been fine...until it wasn't! In this video we will show you why we are replacing our RV toilet and review the NEW toilet. Our toilet of choice is the Dometic 310 RV toilet. They say you can find everything on Amazon, and as we found out, that even includes a new toilet for your RV! Below are the links to the two Dometic toilets we were debating between. Hopefully, this is a job I won't need to do again anytime soon!

    A Sharkbite elbow would relieve the stress on that PEX where the manufacturer over-bent it and also add just enough to the total length. Adding a shutoff valve is also a great idea.

    Thanks for the vid. I work at Dometic - I'm currently working with a 3D artist to do some toilet feature videos. He needed a sample video of a 310 flushing to match the vortex in the animation. You just saved me a hour of setting up a dummy toilet in a warehouse so I could film the swirl. Thanks 10X!

    If you had cut the pex line and installed a shutoff valve you would have easily solved your length problem and added the extra security of having a shut off. By leaning on the toilet with your chest on the toilet and your body weight compressing the rubber seal tightening the nuts is quite easy.

    We are looking at the 320 elongated bowl. We like the bowl and rim flush design better than the 310. But I will be closely checking the dimensions now that you mentioned that it would be a tight fit.
    I picked up five 1/2” stainless steel braided supply lines with a shark bite valve on it. I installed them at the kitchen and bathroom sinks and the toilet. Sharbite valve made it easy to install and hook to the toilet. Now I can isolate the water to the sinks and toilet if there is a problem.

    We seem to have similar issues with our Grand Design! I was thinking about replacing parts on mine and "rebuilding" it but I may go ahead and replace it now. I also have an issue with the black tank valve not closing all the way. I need to check into that problem soon but for now I have a valve on the outside to close it off. Thanks for all the informative videos you put out! It really helps me as I am not as handy as you are.

      The hose going to the toilet is 1/2” pex tubing on our 28bh. If you just need a little added length to make it reach, you can add a 1/2” sharkbite shut off valve, that should extend the hose enough to reach.

    As others have pointed out, the Dometic's insides are basically a leak waiting to happen. The Thetford inside is a much better design for the seal between the bowl and the base. I could share pictures of the Dometic insides, but there's a bit of poop in there. I'm seriously thinking of replacing my Dometic 310 with a Thetford. You could also replace just the base with a toilet that has the problem you described. After a year, is your Dometic leaking? When it leaks from the seal between the bowl and the base, it will look like the floor seal might be leaking, but when you remove the toilet and tip it over, you can see a drip line coming from one of the holes in the base where water has collected between the bowl and the base. It's a horrible design in the Dometic. By the way, you clearly had an inch to spare and could have gone with the 320, but it may have the same leakage issues. Good luck!

    We have that same Thetford Style II toilet and starting to have problems with it. One thing that seems to be a closely guarded secret in the RV toilet industry is bowl depth 🤬 How would you compare the depth of the 310 to the Thetford? We actually have room for the 320 so would appreciate if you were able to find anything comparing it’s bowl depth to either the 310 or the Thetford Style II.

    • @JouppiOutdoors
      @JouppiOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bowl depth on the 310 is deeper than the Thetford. If you have room for the 320, I would recommend going with it. The 320 is very similar to a residential style bowl. It was too close to chance going with the 320 in our rig and we are happy with the 310. Thanks for watching!

    • @JouppiOutdoors
      @JouppiOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far so good! We learned you have to be careful when cleaning with a toilet brush. If you clean it with the flush valve open you can slightly dislodge the seal and the bowl won’t hold water. Dometic has a procedure to reseat the seal which was super easy. We still use a brush to clean it but do so with the flush valve closed. Other than that, no issues! Thanks for watching!
