Merry Christmas to all of my TH-cam Friends! I hope that you all have an amazing time with your friends and family. I would love to hear from you all, comment down below and share where you are from; it doesn't have to be specific; state, country, etc. I would love to know where you all are watching from. Again, thank you for joining me for this adventure. On to the next. Merry Christmas! - Luke
Pay real good attention to the first tree he cut. It was locust. Very unique smell and color. And one of the best BTU producing wood around this area. I know a lot of people go for fatwood for starting fires. The Locust has a very high oil content and is just as good. There's a lot of small trees and branches along the whole length of the Parkway in always take a bag with me to pick up the small branches always have a stash of wood for starting fires in my truck. The only drawback if you do get a splinter get it out as fast as possible it hurts worse than getting an ash splinter
1979 in the chicago area, had a tent that survived through it, don't make them like they use too. I use to camp with friends from when I was 14-18, No lights, 1 4-man tent for 6 and cans of Chief boy for food! AWW The good old days!
I can tell how much you miss your bro. The time back when you are young seemed to stand still and when you reminisce about it now you realize how fast it actually passed. I hope you and your brother can get together again and camp in a snow storm like the old days. Thanks for bringing back some memories for me and sharing the tranquility of nature.
So love you sharing your experiences, Luke. I'm a retired science/environmental ed professor and I regularly had my students out on real world field trips doing authentic research on water quality, birds, forests, etc. Your comments about your childhood trips to the woods resonate with me as my parents too turned me loose. we lived in the country in IN so we didn't have the beautiful mountains but I had fun in our woods and every fall I camped out by the creek in a shelter I made from autumn cornstalks. Had my campfire and was "armed" with my Daisy bb gun. Those were the days. My friends on the farm and I would also make shelters out in the field with hay bales from the loft. Close to home but inside the shelter you felt like you were a million miles away living the life of Daniel Boone. I'm 71 now with a knee replacement so my long hikes are less frequent but I travel in my camper trailer all over the country and settle for day hikes to fly fish and like you, have a good cuppa joe in the woods. I've spent quite a bit of time in western NC and SW VA so I really identify with the turf you regularly visit. Beautiful part of the country. Anyway, thanks for all you do. Even though I've spent a life outdoors I learn something from almost every one of your videos I watch. Keep up the good work and keep having fun.
The enthusiastic attitude you posses, realistic advise and can do demonstrations are awesome. You also do it with simple, affordable gear. This is very uplifting to me. My brother and I lived outdoors when growing up and somehow survived. Those were different times and I feel sorrow for young people today who are not exposed to life away from technology and indoor boredom.
I’m 13 and last year I got a PC and phone. My parents are the same as yours. I sleep out in my field all the time building dens tarp shelters it’s just so great
I'll tell you what I grew up with parents and grandparents that instilled in me that enjoying the outdoors and camping outside was worth it no matter how you could make it happen. Less gear sometimes made me appreciate it more, but as I've been able to afford more I always just encourage people to be safe but use what you got.
T800, you're about 16 yrs old now. Are you still loving the outdoors and getting out as much as you can? You can bring your friends and get them into it also.
Oh to be young again, what an adventure! The closest I have come to something like this is the time, many years ago now, me and my then wife drove through a blizzard to a state park in southern Ohio. We had rented a cabin for the weekend and the owners were amazed that we showed up. The snow was deep enough that we could only make it half way up the driveway to the cabin. The storm finished up that night and rest of the weekend was spent hiking to the various caves and waterfalls in an amazing winter wonderland. Snow was almost knee deep, but powdery and easy to walk through. The stillness and solitude was awesome! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful adventure.
One thing I've noticed with your campsite arrangements, is why don't you ever have the secondary tarp overlap with the tent, you have it separated and this time the door of the tent is facing away from the tarp. My thoughts are so that you would have a seamless entry into the tent without having to get wet at all. If possible I would have had a larger tarp cover both the tent and the secondary one. as an added layer of protection. When we used to camp, we damn near had a circus tent covering everything, including the 3 room tent and the cooking sitting area. Maybe we're more hardcore than most regular campers.
I was thinking the same thing, if It would be an issue to have it seamless I sure wish someone would give me that concept because maybe I haven’t been doing it right lol but with the dogs camping I would think that getting their feet at least a little bit dryer under the tarp before they get on the 10th would be a good idea

I think about my brother when I watch you camping , thank you , love the snow!! During the 1,000 year reign of Christ on Earth we Christians will be here with him, really looking forward to it!!! Then I can enjoy things like this , at 80 I enjoy watching the joy it gives you, thank you for sharing!!
As someone who's lived outdoors for 12.5 yrs in northwestern Montana I can tell you.that if you get a big enough rainfly tarp with multiple attachment points it's smart to throw a tarp over tents like that using paracord for a ridgeline then 2 carabiner with pressic knots off the carbiners to tension out the rainfly tarp and create a A Frame over the tent so snow and rain are shed off with the pitch. Another pointer is a backcountry avalanche shovel, MSR makes a good one and it's lite weight. Times are different, my parents would load us up on horses and we were just raised to know what was around. We always had 2 dogs with us and they were our eyes and ears at night. We always had a large caliber rifle and a pistol. Those times were priceless with my little brother. He passed 10 yrs ago. So I take my son out into the backcountry and teach him what my father taught me. It's a skillset that allows you to survive in nature and do it with a cool head. I absolutely love winter camping and I'm not discrediting that's alot of snow but a blizzard here at 8300 ft.dumps between 4 to 6 ft. It puts life into perspective when you can see the Northern Lights and just living life. Cheers mate
Your videos got me more excited & more prepper minded with camping, hiking or backpacking. It really is something else. I would love to camp again with my husband soon. It really refreshes my soul
I love your stories about your brother. I remember cold weather camping in Northern Illinois with my Boy Scout troop when I was young. Amazing how confidence building it is; I learned lessons I will never forget. I love it. Thank you for sharing!
I love your enthusiasm! Also your appreciation of your great childhood. I'm a little older but grew up the same way. Always outdoors. My area wasn't quite as rural but we had a lot of woods and open land nearby. From age 10 on, NEVER left home without knife and matches. Lots of daytime adventures and also camping. Camping in the warm weather, we just laid sleeping bags on the ground without a tent. Nothing like watching the campfire light reflect off the leaves on the trees as you fall asleep. You really brought back the feelings of being outside and free.
Watching this in early 2024. I’ve spent almost the whole Christmas ‘23 holiday (which is quite lengthy in the UK) watching/catching up on your videos; they’ve become a bit of an obsession. I observe a) how much younger you look in this one and b) the focus on bushcraft is more evident in this older vid. Luke, you’re such a nice bloke.
My first viewing of one of your videos. Wonderful job! You are so watchable, and make a clear, upbeat, informative and creative project. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Your stories of you and your brother have me thinking of the days when I would stay out all day in a snowstorm and come home only when my pants were froze solid and I was starving!😂 and as I got a bit older the camping began! Cheers buddy thanks for bringing old memories to life
I am from South Carolina, we roamed the woods around our home also, mama pretty much turned us lose! I love watching the things God made ,others say" Nature", I taught little ones in church and one of our Bible thoughts was""Think of the wonders of God". I am a 80 yr old woman that misses the outdoors, family to enjoy it with.
Such an awesome video! I am a professional picture framer and watched/listen to this while working. The part I needed to stop and really listen to was when you were in the tent at night and you can hear the snow tickling the rain fly! I love that sound and have fallen to sleep hundreds of times to that sound. My 10 years as a Boy Scout leader are wholly engrained in my being. Thank you again for that video and as others mentioned, the stories of you and your brother were touching.
I hear you around your thoughts about your mom letting you out in the woods back in the day. I started solo backpacking when I was 14, going out in every season for 1-3 weeks at a time. There aren't many moms who'd drop their kids off at the edge of a wilderness, and sweetly and honestly say "Have a good time!" I am so very thankful that I had a mom who did. Of course, I never told her about the bears, the lightning storms, the rattlesnakes or the freezing nights. But that's just being polite. :)
I don't know why your videos are re-appearing in my feed 1 year late, but I certainly don't mind it! Haven't had a good winter camp in a while, and this brought back some memories. I see a lot of people suggesting doing extra stuff like having another tarp/cover above the tent etc, and I agree with a lot of it. If I had to only use the gear that you brought, then I would try to link the entrance of the tent with the tarp, so they extend their coverage in a single dry spot. Another creative way to deal with the snow buildup on a tarp like that, is to not secure it into the ground or trees themselves, but rather suspend it from trees with floating anchors to weigh it down (use rocks or branches as weights). With no snow buildup, the branches will weigh enough to extend the tarp fully and provide nice coverage - but the more snow builds up, the more the tarp weighs and pulls on the branches. With enough snow buildup, the tarp will cave in on its own and dump most of the snow, which then resets the weight and allows the branches to pull down and stretch out the tarp yet again. I think this is a fun way to build a maintenance-free tarp setup, but it does require a bit of fiddling to get the weight anchors right, and probably a few trial and error sessions. The key is to get the weight just high enough that the tarp can be stretched out fully with no snow buildup on it, and from then on the tarp will take care of the snow buildup itself :)
I've just started upon your videos. I'm loving them especially when you talk about your memories with your brother. I'm 66 now and have so many of those memories with my two brothers. I'm the oldest daughter. We were always in the woods and building forts, camping. We couldn't imagine not being there. You have taken me back to such fond memories, thank you. Kids today have no idea what they are missing. God Bless and stay safe.
Being homeless, I watched this video from under my tarp. I can't get enough of being outside. My gear: Lowlands Wing tarp OR Advanced Bivy Husky Enjoy -26(c) Thermolite Reactor Extreme Forclaz 400 sleeping mat I put my bivy under my tarp, the goretex acts as a 'windbreaker' for me. I purposefully slighty overdid it because as a homeless man I cannot ever get inside a home to 'warm up'. I dealt with it accordingly. A bit pricey though, but worth it. I'm staying out, got no need for luxury problems 😁🙃
@@davidlamotta1994 No need for stuff like that. I wouldn't be able to pay for heating, so what's the point in having a house? I have plenty money to live of this way. Maybe stop repeating society's dogma that a house is better, it's clearly not the case.
I'm late watching this one, but one of my favorites. All I could think of on the hike out - "Man, it's a lot of work to hike ahead, set up the camera to get a shot without footprints, hike back, hike forward, back to get the camera. In knee deep snow!" If I had the power, I'd make you an honorary Canadian.
Great location, you were lucky to be able to experience all that fun as a kid. Wish we had snow like this here, would love to camp in it. That was one heck of a snow storm, but it looked like loads of fun too. I liked your shovel.
Memories are what keeps us going brother., at 8 yrs old, I was gone all day in the mountains of Norway, exploring. Still to this day ,never winter camped, at least not for 3 days or more .always wanted too, couldn't ever find a crazy friend to do it with. Love the video brother! Rock! And stay safe.
Man . I swear , you make me just a little jealous. I from the heart, thank you for the life you share with all of us. You are truly living the dream bro . Keep on keeping on . Fort Worth Texas here , yeeyee .
I have the same tent and it's a keeper, MILSPEC and all ! As for snow piling on your tent, I have always been of the opinion that even if a tent has a fly, etc., why not protect yourself, and the tent, even more ? My solution is to cover the tent with a largish tarp, in addition to what protection it already has. This may sound like overkill in the minds of some, but I don't want my precious gear to be over-stressed any more than it absolutely must. Now about that fire situation. Have you considered using the "log-cabin" type of fire that burns all night without being tended to ? The more, the longer (3-4 feet should do), and the thicker the logs, the longer the fire will last. I have seen some last for nearly 2 days. It is possible to cook on this type of fire, but I would also build a smaller cooking fire close by to the larger one; my preference. What do you think ?
LordBane Sounds like a good idea with iHeartRadio large tarp, provided one can pack it in along with all the other gear. Have used that technique myself when I was in the Army in SF. As to fires, a SIBERIAN log fire is incredible. Go to SURVIVAL-RUSSIA, run by LARS GREBNEV.🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍👍❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️🌨🌨🌨🌨
Your parents gave you the chance to be a good "free and wild," the legal kind of freedom . . . as opposed to today where too frequently "free and wild" means to do something wrong, unlawful, etc. You were blessed with good parents.
Its way past Christmas time, but still enjoying this video. Wonderful, wonderful story teller you are. I would imagine your parents are very proud of the excellent job they did in raising you. I know I would certainly be. Good luck with all your endeavors and hope to see many more of your adventures!
Wow!!! You finally got that big snowfall remember this and be careful what you wish for. I haven't seen that much snow since I was a little girl in Pennsylvania.
Dude thanks for sharing these, things like this reignite my sense of adventure. I grew up with a very similar childhood experience, so I have a lot of nostalgia for this stuff as well.
I watch this one allot. I miss the mountains and the snow. I've learned quite a bit and love the scenery and if I watch it at night, I sleep very well. Thanks so much for this video(oh,&all the rest!)!
Great story and it’s obvious you had great parents . I loved and could see by the look on your face when talking about your brother how much you appreciated his company and the adventures you went on. I tell you what if the apocalypse comes I want to be with you! Thanks for sharing this. I am one who loves the snow and experiencing what nature has to offer
Loved your video, just came across your channel and subscribed. The woods were just beautiful, I love watching things like this. Have a safe and blessed year
Looooved this video. I’m watching from bed this Christmas morning from the west side of Michigan. By the Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan. Cheers! Love your channel sooo much been watching for over a year now.
Yes! My brother , neighbors and I would go out in the woods close to the house all weekend. Camping, building forts and treehouses. Coolest fort we ever made was in a huge briar patch! We spent days on our knees cutting into the middle. A common area in the middle to play cards and each of us made small room to put our sleeping bags in and camp all weekend! One of the neighbors dad bought us military rations in green cans to eat. GREAT MEMORIES!
Hi Luke...I am from St THOMAS ontario. I just loved this video! You did a great job of keeping your camp free of snow. There was so much of it!! The forest was beautiful with all that snow . I think the owl follows you when your camping, and is glad to see you! Keep up the great videos they are so fun to watch, and you make it fun and makes you feel your there with you....🌲🌲🔥☕️❤️
I am sure I'm not the first to mention this, but maybe an overnighter with your brother using the stuff you scrounged as a kid. The fun/misery index should be off the charts
Recently found you and your channel. After watch a dozen or so or your videos I have to say that I really respect what you are doing. You have a great theme, tempo and message to us all that watch.
Would love to camp like that, awesome to watch thanks for taking us with you. Great attitude. Unfortunately Switzerland is way too crowded and public camping prohibited. Enjoy your freedom!
I don't like being cold or out in the snow, but I really love watching your snow camping videos...Thanks for the great posts and bringing us on your adventures! :-)
Free Range kids that is what we are,Thank God :) No helicopter needed :) You and Camping with Steve are real great Chanels to follow.I like when you bring your wife you guys make a great team.
100% on the freedom we had as kids. I feel bad for my boys as they will not understand the freedoms we had. I remember my best friend and I at the creek getting crawdads from sun up to sun down. I've been binge watching your videos and I want to thank you for bringing us along.
Just watched this amazing episode !!! Grate job and looked like it was a ton of fun !!!! Funny how I'm living in my ice shack on 2 feet of ice and ur in a tent with 2 feet of snow !!!!!! Thanks for a great time !!!!!
Hi from New Zealand, I was raised on a dairy farm one of the boundary fences border a forest. Yea had no fancy outdoor gear just a Tarp and woolen blankets. Sometimes went camping with just the clothes we had on. Use to built tree huts, underground dig-outs setup camp in hay barns. Use to spotlight at night with air guns shoot mice, rabbits, and possums. When your young and full of energy your resilient and bulletproof to weather life is fun. I can go on and on about my childhood upbringing. I loved winter more than summer. Over NZ is an ozone hole and our summers are deadly dangerous. A lot of Kiwi's suffer from melanoma cancer as a result. Thank you for bringing back memoirs of my childhood, enjoy viewing your winter camping clips👍
I’m a bit new to ur channel Nov 2022, but viewing ur past videos and this one is so great. Love ur childhood stories. I grew up the same. Today I rarely see kids outside building forts and dragging every found junk contraption home. I grew up w/my 6 siblings camping all across the U.S., super great memories. I was the oldest. Fabulous times. Kids today truly are missing out on such free feeling healthy fun. Great video, thanks for sharing ur life.
This video was SO GOOD - and - SO LONG (Loved it) - I felt like I was there with you!! The longer video was Excellent Sir - I hope to see many more like this.
Luke, just subscribed to your channel. I always watch your camping/hiking adventures and enjoy it a lot! And, WOW! You had a pretty good snow storm right there, over a foot of snow! That is a great adventure for sure. Please keep it up and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Love the look on your face throughout this video, you look like a kid Christmas morning lol great video funny how a snow storm can be fun into our adult years
Just watched your video for the firs time. Loved it. I love being in the outdoors dead smack in the middle of no where. I haven't done any winter time camping but can't wait to do it. Keep up the great videos
I’m am 67 year old woman and I remember being outside all the time hated having to go in at night. We lived next to our cousins and would sleep outside in yard with a blanket. We were so blessed weren’t we.Do kids nowadays even know about sleeping under the stars? I hope at least some of them do.What a great life.😊
I am so jealous right now. How in the world do you guys find the land to do outings like this. Here in the South everything is privately owned - and you dare not trespass for fear of being shot. I don't care how far out you go. I would absolutely love to have an experience like this!
Very impressed ..I liked the upbeat style you have..and it was really informative..and for a long video it was still interesting! you're like a backpacking survivor man..lol a great big hello from Gull lake Alberta Canada! Well done !
Same here! I loved camping out and hanging out in the woods. My friend and I talk about this all the time. The kids now really were sheltered and have no idea about the outdoors or being self reliant. I try to impart this to my son as much as I can because then he knows he can survive no matter what. Thanks, man! Great content! PS: I love Smokey and the Bandit! We definitely have a better sense of humor than the snowflakes and cancel culture that want to completely remove history because it makes them feel bad? History shows our mistakes. Without it you repeat those mistakes. History repeats itself.
Merry Christmas to all of my TH-cam Friends!
I hope that you all have an amazing time with your friends and family.

TheOutdoorGearReview merry Christmas. Why not have a 2nd tarp with a high pitch over top your tent?
Anyone else still loving this in 2023? Thanks so much for sharing all this with us Luke!
I tend to like these older ones more than the new ones. More stories and less pure gear talk😅

Thank you. I haven't seen a snowy forest in over 20 yrs. It's still as beautiful as I've remembered. ❤
My gear:
Lowlands Wing tarp
OR Advanced Bivy
Husky Enjoy -26(c)
Thermolite Reactor Extreme
Forclaz 400 sleeping mat
I put my bivy under my tarp, the goretex acts as a 'windbreaker' for me. I purposefully slighty overdid it because as a homeless man I cannot ever get inside a home to 'warm up'. I dealt with it accordingly. A bit pricey though, but worth it. I'm staying out, got no need for luxury problems 😁🙃
Hey man, stay warm and safe out there. Wish you the best this winter.
@@Mixima101 Thank you.
Where are you staying. Like in some forest or in the city
Organised but free bivouac zones in rural/forest areas.
Maybe he used a drone?
Smokey and the Bandit! I love that movie! My brothers and I can quote Sheriff Buford T. Justice all day!
You should go get your brother and go camping together before it's too late
That same thought crossed my mind too.
love this video, probably watched 3-4 times
It was a real pleasure going on your adventure with you. You make it look so easy. Thanks for sharing your journey
Great narration and personality! I felt like I was right there. Brings back lots of my own camping memories. Keep up the outstanding work.
How FUN!! You were right; this was an awesome idea👍 Thanks for sharing your experience. Absolutely beautiful

I thank it's an awesome idea I'm with you.i liked you comment 👍thanks.
It's not a bad I dead if it sumer time or wht ever but in that snow it a lot it would Sumter the fire in a heart beat
Your childhood has made you the Man you are now. You LIVED for sure! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. Best wishes from England.
Wow!!! You finally got that big snowfall remember this and be careful what you wish for. I haven't seen that much snow since I was a little girl in Pennsylvania.
An absolutely terrific adventures experience .I love to watch it.
Always love the look of fresh snow and the sound when walking through it.
Awesome adventure Luke! Lots of work! Love it👍👍

Dude thanks for sharing these, things like this reignite my sense of adventure. I grew up with a very similar childhood experience, so I have a lot of nostalgia for this stuff as well.
It's May, 2020 while I'm looking at this happy video...very enjoyable.
I watch this one allot. I miss the mountains and the snow. I've learned quite a bit and love the scenery and if I watch it at night, I sleep very well. Thanks so much for this video(oh,&all the rest!)!
As someone who grew up in north Pa winter camping is something i have always wanted to do
I though I was the only one that looked forward to snow storms!
Amazing scenery, thanks for sharing your escapade with us👍
Great story and it’s obvious you had great parents .
Have a safe and blessed year
I don't camp, but I love your videos and your up-beat attitude. Merry Christmas and may you and yours have a blessed New Year. Stay safe.

That would be really cool and i am sure they would have fun.
Recently found you and your channel. After watch a dozen or so or your videos I have to say that I really respect what you are doing. You have a great theme, tempo and message to us all that watch.
me too...! 👍☺️👍
loved the "old" days... go out, have fun, be back by dark. at 55 I greatly miss those days
Merry Christmas Luke and the fam! Hope you have a wonderful rest of the year!
Great video! I always learn something about the outdoors when I watch your videos.
One of my most favorite video's.

"I can't talk, my mouth is frozen" lololol! 🤣 Great video man, keep them coming! ❄️🏞️🔥☕
Very cook video. I like how you talk about your memories with your brother. I would like to experience what you did with my brothers
Thank you so much for going out in this storm and sharing it with us!! I pray that we'll have similar storms this winter!!!!!
Luke, One if the best videos I’ve watched. Awesome content and great music. So much fun.
The view of the daylight rising in the forest with all this snow is simply beautiful!
It makes me want to try winter camping. Thank you for this video
Enjoying nature, snow and independency; how beautiful life can be. I totally understand your point! Cheers from Spain
Just watched this amazing episode !!! Grate job and looked like it was a ton of fun !!!! Funny how I'm living in my ice shack on 2 feet of ice and ur in a tent with 2 feet of snow !!!!!! Thanks for a great time !!!!!
One of my favourite of your uploads Luke! That snow looked absolutely bloody amazing. I wish we had snow like that here in Australia.
Hi from New Zealand,
I was raised on a dairy farm one of the boundary fences border a forest.
This video just popped up, thought I’d give it a go
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great filming
Will have to do some catch up now
Thank you 🌈
Seasons greetings from Perth Western Australia, hope you and your family have a terrific 2019.🖖
Excellent video bro. I love your energy and passion. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot
This video was SO GOOD - and - SO LONG (Loved it) - I felt like I was there with you!!
The longer video was Excellent Sir - I hope to see many more like this.
This was an awesome camp! Thanks so much for sharing your stories and showing us your camp!
I hope at least some of them do.What a great life.😊
Beautiful Winter Wonderland! Love the snow....it's always been Magical to me as well as quiet & gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Luke.
I am so jealous right now. How in the world do you guys find the land to do outings like this. Here in the South everything is privately owned - and you dare not trespass for fear of being shot. I don't care how far out you go. I would absolutely love to have an experience like this!
Merry Christmas Luke :) Wesołych Świąt ;) from Poland ;) great video and nice adventure :)
Very impressed ..I liked the upbeat style you have..and it was really informative..and for a long video it was still interesting! you're like a backpacking survivor man..lol a great big hello from Gull lake Alberta Canada! Well done !
Had a great time watching this ! I like your ''lazy fuel tabs'', sometimes convenience is very welcome. Good stuff !!
Been working through your videos and they’re very relaxing for when I’m trying to fall asleep at night.
Just found your videos, watched 3 so far and really enjoyed them. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories.
Really enjoying this in the middle of June, sweating my boys off haha. Cheers Buddy!!
Best gear reviews out there! Thanks for the awesome content. Keep up the great work 😁👍
Just an absolutely amazing adventure! I'm to the point in my life where I hate summer and prefer winter!
Can't get enough snow!!!!
