Quick question for you Luke if you ever happen to come across this comment. How would you use, or alter... a standard 3 piece survival shovel to excel at shoveling snow if you had the time to purchase or gather parts or materials in advance of your trip... any ideas? I haven't seen any foldable snow shovel attachment accessories that are interchangeable for those things unfortunately but I would love to try something to make it work... thanks bud.

I was in the US Army and worked in the Army for 33 years before I retired 29.5 years ago. And I have to laugh every time I hear military quality or military surplus. Every time I hear that I think of the flashlights they furnished us for night duty. They were green plastic 90 degree lights. We used to joke that you turned on the flashlight and struck a match to make sure it was on. That was almost not a joke.

We camped when I was a child. The 2 families had 4 man tents, cots, camp cook stove, battery tv for the weather forecast only, and even a camping toilet. The parents cooked breakfast on the stove but all other meals were done on the fire and were usually what we caught that day fishing. We spent many a Christmas vacation at that campsite. Winter is the absolute best time to camp no matter how you camp.

The thing I noticed about the military - my husband was in the Army 23 years - is the opportunities they give people. Opportunities that in large part they'd never get in a civilian job. The Army took a hay-seed N. C. country boy and molded him into a soldier, then a man and then gave him opportunities he never dreamed were possible. From a recruit out of high school all the way through college degrees and retiring as a Major (O-4). From pickin' cotton as a summer job to designing computer programs - the Army was good to us. Blessings to your daughter and much success. ~Sherrie in South Carolina

Thanks for the respect for military community. I’m at 15 years enlisted and you’re right, it’s a difficult job, it takes a certain type of person, and there’s just a lot to serving. Anyone can do it, and it’s incredibly rewarding, but they have to be willing to adapt to the stress, hard work, culture, and tradition.

Used army surplus for outdoors, can't beat the deals. Had a canvis jungle hammick( bear burrito 6lbs) , best 6 lbs I ever carried hiking, camping. Comfortable, used for a vision quest , cut the screening out and used to, take a knapp in 35 deg winter hiking ,comfortably out of the wind for years. Will need to restring with parachute card, 500 lb rope (40 ft), cost more than the hammock.
Used a slip knot, then put hoop from tail , into main hoop , tightened main hoop down, 1 pull knot that can hold 300 lb. Handy knot works with hammocks , won't slip.
Am xmilitary , used surplus cuz, it's the only thing that worked and lasted, Had a m59 field jacket for snow storm walking when a kid, tough stuff. Had a store nearby .The mole gear finally adressed the shoulder strap issue.
May your daughter be youthful and safe, hope she visted for xmass. Still use the life skills learned in the military, don't panic just get it done, then" if you have to" take it up in the parking lot after the job is done. And it ain't cold, till the car battery freezes. A blizzard just reminds you how far the chow hall really is, why you don't wear cowboy boots in snow !!!!, 10' of snow will braek your fall from a 2nd floor window. And finally you won't get a cold for 6yrs after the military pea soup they shot in your arm. And where's my thermal mug.
Thank you, for reminding us all how quiet the woods really are.

I recently left a job, got hurt and to old, where I serviced military aircraft. I was always so impressed by those 18, 19 year old kids getting those E3 and E6’s, KC-135s ready. I wished more people could see them, as opposed to the people on the news. The main reason there are so many suicides in the military is fear of losing their security clearance if they find ask for help. It’s sad

After 20 years in the Air Force, I can tell you that Military Service is like a giant magnifying glass to personal problems. If you join as a stable, normal person the occasional difficulties we all face in life can look huge. However, if you bring emotional, mental, or physical problems into the service, they will look like Mountains. Fortunately the majority of jobs in the service are no different than their civilian counterparts you just have to do them away from home and sometimes away from family and friends.

When I was younger I traveled around the US on a motorcycle all I could..It taught me a lot about quality camping gear..In WI and in the Winter when we couldn't tour we would go to state parks that were open and winter camp in snow and the cold..We had good tents and great gear..Even at 0 degrees we were snug as bugs in a rug..I remember the cops would come around and check on us..Actually they were very thoughtful!!..Camping in challenging conditions is either something you enjoy or you don't..I get it either way!!

I was also in the Navy in weapon systems missiles. I can tell u that it is a mental game when you first go into boot camp, but if you can follow orders and pay attention you will get through it and you won't be the same person you were when u went in. Remember these rules that are drilled into you during boot camp are designed to keep you and the person next to you safe. When you hit the fleet, the way you do ur job will effect someone else if you are not paying attention. That's why it is so important to learn to follow orders during boot.

Back in High School (I'm 37) after Christmas, 2 of my buddies and I collected about 25 old Christmas trees and stuck them in my friend's front yard. There was about a foot of snow on the ground so all the trees were standing. His house looked like a tree farm. The next summer the same friends and I collected all sorts of household furniture and set it all up in his yard. We had a treadmill, an old PC, a couch, and other stuff. Good innocent fun. LOL

Young and crazy. We've all been there, Luke. We go through life's phases and learn as we go along. I have some idea of what Madison does having been the "doc" on radar sites, having military buddies who worked in top secret positions. Their jobs are extremely high stress and burn outs happened. The intelligence quota of these guys can be off the charts. Now, fast forward to April 2020 and the Covid-19 crisis. Thanks to You Tubers like you as we experience social distancing and quarantining we can almost enjoy the experience living vicariously through your adventures. This episode is one of my favorites in that it involves military surplus gear. Probably 95% of my gear is military oriented having served 23 years in the United States Air Force as an Independent Duty Medical Technician with several air rescue missions under my belt. As you ingested the contents of the MRE packages, I couldn't help recalling my experiences with them and previous K or C rations, whatever they were called. Although it was sustenance it was deplorable..my apologies to those who loved them. It got to the point I maintained a food kit in my deployment bag made up of food products I enjoyed. I like that you think outside the box and improvise. e.g. your makeshift shelter with the three tarps. While out on deployments there were many occasions that improvising made our mission more enjoyable. Keep up the great work and your camera skills are absolutely amazing, both visual and audio.

I’m 17 livin here in Indiana and this inspired me to get out there and do some real camping. I commonly go out in the woods, taking my Jeep renegade and camping with a tent right by the car, only going out when the conditions are perfect, and with many friends but this video showed me how much I’m missing with my “glamping” and so I bit the bullet and got myself a blue ridge camping hammock and a backpack and I’m gonna go trek the Hoosier national forest. I hope to have half as much fun as you have, and if I do, I consider that a success. Thanks for the inspiration

Build you a fire pit and line the bottom with stone and fill the gaps with smaller pebbles. I found the stone radiates more heat for keeping fires going and for warmth, but also much easier to restart a fire in the morning as there is a small area that remains glowing hot, just add tender.

Good Morning Luke (from a South African living in Switzerland) ..
    Great Posting .. thanks ☝😊.
Having also served (yeaaaars back 😊), I also have a fondness for Mil Surplus / Equipment. The genuine stuff will just not let one down.
Yep .. my Swiss '84 Canteen and Cup (a fairly recent purchase .. 10 years or do) and S.A. Mil Water Bottle with matching SS 'Fire Bucket' aka Canteen Cup (personal issue from the 1970's)l continue to 'do their duty' to this day 👍. I still have and use, my original issue folding Esbit Stove (1968) .. not with the EsbitTabs though (I have these as backup). 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste' (Gel Fuel) is far more common here (and much cheaper) .. available in any Supermarket (DiningTable Top 'Raclette' and Fondu Evenings are a Swiss National Sport with the Gel Fuel as heat source .. so, no problemo 😊). Burn Containers for the Gel Fuel consists of a set (3) of Glass Jar Metal Screw Tops in different sizes. Each packs into the other and together with the Esbit Stove (and Tablets therein), fits nicely into a Mil Issue Webbing Compass Pouch .. done deal 😊.
My apologies for the 'Useless Information' Ramble 😪 .. but .. 'getting outdoors' does not have to cost an arm and a leg. There is plenty affordable good quality gear on the market that can be used to get one 'out there' .. not mentioning the 'stuff' at home. With some minor mods, SS Tea and Coffee containers make for excellent Cook Pots. Just a bit of lateral thinking and basic hand tools .. lots more raw material to be sourced / 'requisitioned' (at risk sometimes 😉) and converted to Outdoor Gear.
Enough .. once again Luke, thanks from an 'Old F*rt' for bringing back some good memories and until next time ..
    Take care .. Tommy

Excellent adventure Luke. Love those distant shots of your campfire. Very creative. It’s a great feeling to be snug and warm with the wind howling outside. You captured that experience. Congrats on having so fun on your very own LWM.

just for thought. construct a wind break, stuff openings with ground material. the wind usually changes directions in the night (not in your weather forcast) will need two at angle for fire pit.

Huh, I'd honestly never heard of "forking" a house before. Nice. Now toilet papering, egging, and flour bombing I have some experience with.
Oh and if you guys love pb&j sandwiches, you *need* to make and try the grilled version. Exactly the same as you would a grilled cheese sandwich just replace the cheese with peanut butter and jelly. Life changing.. 😁
    👍👌✌

Man that TundraNator truck sounds sweet. Great video and your idea of Military Grade Tasters Nasty coffee got my attention. Lol
As for pranks, l once had a coworker that always did crazy things to my truck. We worked with a food service company and he always backed his car into a parking space. One Friday after all the ladies had left l went into the ladies room and got a full box of tampons. Opened them and dipped each one in red food coloring. Tied them under his rear bumper. Monday came and he walks up and said he would never touch my truck again. He went to Church that Sunday and walks out with his parents to find a multitude of elderly ladies at his car. Told me he about got beat to death with Bible's. Lmbo

I'm still learning about camping in the outdoors and i've been doing it since I was 12. The new technology they're coming out with compared to what I had years ago, is just astounding. I usually bring Packaged Hot Dogs/Burgers something kinda easy. I have this cool Tri-pod that sits over the camp fire, it's basically a hanging grill (Cheap one from Walmart nothing exciting) I have a Sleeping bag from years ago, still doing me justice, rated for 13F (I know there are better, this works for me though)
I have got to say, the best thing I could have ever picked up was a Life Straw. Saved my ass on many hikes when I forgot my Water Bottle.
The past couple years, i've been trying Hammocking out, trying different area's in the Adirondacks. Sometimes near the Finger Lakes. I really enjoy setting my Hammocks up over Dangerous looking spots, mainly for protection and the beauty.
Have you looked into the Spyder Hammocks? Would be amazing to see a review on one of those.

I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s.. was a teenager in the mid to late 1970s and we got into a lot of stuff but no serious trouble just a lot of fun.. everything from skitching on the back of bumpers during the winter time to get from one end of town to another.. to zip lining off a cliff.. to buzzing around town on our mini bikes being chased by the cops... Luckily my friends and I never got into serious trouble.. remember back then we had access to m80s and quarter sticks.. in various other aerial fireworks... And when we were out of fireworks we made our own out of household items. 😂..

I like your videos. I did 4 years peacetime service in the 1990s USMC. That was the LAST time I ate an MRE. MRE stands for Meal not Ready to Exit. Don't miss them, lol! At MCRD San Diego my senior drill instructor told us "Trust me you will get tired of these" Only in a dire emergency will I eat one again :)

My go to tarp shelter is the plow point with the back to the wind. And I use the firebox stove for my fire pit.
