The "model cheekbones post." Don't get me wrong, that was an absolutely beautiful look. But the "how to get model cheekbones," the trick was to have them already. Like, they already had very similar facial structure to the model in the photo. I cannot make my cheekbones look like that with any shape of contour.

Yup. I have pretty pronounced cheekbones, but my face doesn’t do the indent by the cheeks as far down as “model cheekbones” do so it doesn’t look right.

So while this is absolutely TRUE, I can say that coming from a Beauty Advisors' standpoint (at a well known, very popular cosmetics store... Where makeovers are done)--- I've actually found myself in a very awkward position, many times over, with respect to someone with the deepest of deep skin color coming in & asking desperately for my help with finding "a contour stick".
So here's the deal-- contouring is using a deeper, cooler toned shade than your own, to create the illusion of "shade" from, say, the cheekbones being so high that they cast a shade beneath them.
With this in mind, unfortunately those moments happened with people that just so happen to have the darkest skin shade possible, yet they want to contour-- we're not talking a deep "mocha" shade either. Quite literally black. Therein lies the issue with contour.... It isn't possible to make a shade darker than black to use as contour!!!
However, you CANNOT (and should not!) explain things this bluntly to your client, who simply just wants to do what they're seeing all over social media....
And THAT'S when you explain to them the magic of "reverse contouring", bc guess what? "Lucky you, you were naturally born with the contour already!!!" And this just so happens to be true most of the time! It's a matter of working on things a little differently-- to add to it, even though most clients aren't happy with the outcome, you cannn technically go with a LIGHTER SHADE of foundation stick, using much thinner lines than the stick offers, make your contour shapes, and blend. The lighter shade will look "ashy" (cool toned), and give that illusion. But again, this is NOT the best or well lived method.
So saying "reverse contour" gives that client the ability to achieve that look, but without the feeling of "damnit, I'm 'different' so I can't even do what I wanna do!" Seriously, ppl think this way. It's sad! So yes, simple "reverse contouring" being recommended, demonstrated/ shown seems to ALWAYS ALWAYS make those clients happy 🩷🩷🩷

That Crayola pencil thing was a trend for eyeliner a few years ago and people were claiming it was safe because the pencils are non toxic. Crayola themselves released a statement telling people NOT to do that saying “Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make lipstick, eyeliner or other make-up and strongly discourage their use in this manner. They are not designed, tested or approved for this purpose.”

I learned makeup initially after training as a fine artist for 2 decades - similar to Scott Barnes. I painted mainly portraits, so makeup was learning to work with a 3D canvas that MOVED and learning to apply pigment to get a result with different materials than oil/acrylic paints, charcoal, etc. The process of contouring, or applying shadow and light is a very old process in makeup, but the fact that people seem to keep renaming the same process with slightly different vocabulary (reverse contouring) and acting like a brand new technique has been discovered makes me giggle every time!! How many more times are we going to rechristen “contouring” and pretend like the wheel was reinvented??😂

What if I like my nose how it is? Don’t assume I want it to look thinner just because you don’t like your nose. The reverse contouring video I was like "isn't that just highlighting?" so I appreciated when you pointed out that, yes, it is just highlighting. Don't know why people love to make up these new terms for things! I guess to make them seem trendy when they're just old techniques.
Also I kind of assumed the person doing the contour with the circle bit around the cheek was trying to emphasize the fullness of their cheeks. That's what it looked like to me, and I think it is a look that is popular in some circles because it makes you look more "youthful."

People ABSOLUTELY DO make things up!! They start with a simple fact that everyone is familiar with, like “sponges absorb”. From there, they’ll make up a narrative, typically a beauty tip or “hack”. So they then think: “sponges absorb but brushes don’t seem like they do.” And voila! We get the awesome “advice”:
“Have excess foundation on your face? Use a beauty sponge to absorb excess product! Avoid brushes as they will only smear and streak the product.”

PS Robert, my father was an art teacher & a very prolific artist himself. He would get quite irate that my teen beauty magazines would never use art terms or teach makeup using applicable theories. He was a great teacher and extremely smart in his hands-on ways of teaching kids proper art theory. He also had a very severe reading/spelling disability, and loved that the "legit educational" side of TH-cam made it possible for other brainiac creatives who can't spell to become professional authorities in the arts. He passed awhile ago after a good long life, and your channel often does remind me of him. You aren't as blunt about it, lol, but you very much teach like he did, and he really loved when people in the more commercial creative fields spoke like the legit artists that they are - and showed the connection between art education & professional success in many areas.

I have an art background in oil painting and watercolor (painting people mostly) and this is a peeve of mine too!
The orange corrector can cancel green, but not as well as a red would. Girl couldn't even say "purple areas" or "dark circles" just "bruising". Like, bruises can be blue, green, yellow, red, but dark undereyes aren't bruises 😮‍💨.
But most importantly, those amounts of color corrector are ridiculous🤦‍♀️🙄. The amount of foundation and concealer needed to cover that shit would leave a horrible, cakey mess once you set it...

That reminds me of something. I've used a beauty blender just a few times because every time I tried it, it left my foundation looking bad and kinda patchy, very uneven on the surface. But I've used a brush for years and I've never had any trouble with it, everything always looks very smooth. I think it might partly be because my foundations are always matte, they dry out quicker... But a brush seems so much easier to use and clean, it's more convenient overall, in my opinion. I really don't get why so many people don't like them.

Robert all colored pencils are non toxic. About 13 years ago I got into trouble with the law and ended up in prison and the only thing I could afford off commissary were colored pencils I used then not only for coloring but for makeup too. They work well for lipstick and eyeshadow. And to this day if I don't have the color of eyeshadow or lipstick I want to use for the day I still use colored pencils. But I will say that if anyone wants to use this hack it's best to use warm water to soften the pencils. Cold water takes way longer to soften them.

Not so ... many coloured pencils cobtain toxic ingredients, such as lead, cobalt and other things. These ttypes of ingredients aren't typically found in childrens pencils (depending on where they're sold) but artist supplies definitely do still have toxic stuff.

@@jaycreswell7008 well I only ment kids colored pencils like Crayola or RoseArt because that is all I use or that is available on commissary in a women's prison in Iowa

i have scars on my face from a dog attack. beauty blenders just don't work. I have a little oval shaped foundation brush i use to apply my foundation. (peeps with scars, colourblend pretty fresh foundation is amazing on scars) then i use a fluffier brush just to lightly go over it all in soft circles.
    it works.

I know highlight is the reverse of contour but for some reason, when she shows that, it was really a lightbulb moment for me. See, i think my confusion stems from the word "highlight" and i always think of shimmery, traditional highlights but i never actually realized highlight can also be just really light powder. Don't laugh, i'm new to makeup and am just learning. This is kind of what Johnny Ross was talking about when he said that there's lots of people who don't really know/understand terms that people who know a lot about makeup take for granted everyone knows 🙂

its okay, we were all beginers at once. Dont be ashamed to learn new things and give them a first try. I really took a long time to understand basic stuff when i started too (i was afraid of eye shadow and eye liner) so it took me a while to understand and try it

I have this burst capillary on my cheekbone and literally no makeup sticks to it - green colour corrector doesn’t make a difference at all☹️ I wonder if it’s cause it’s one small bright red spot (on very pale skin) as oppsed to a red area? Anyone have any tips?🙏🏻

    • @lillachrissay5564

Maybe you could try smth like a good eyeshadow-primer on this part of your skin to see if that would make products stick to it? (if indeed the eyeshadow-primer itself will stay on).

Hi Robert! 🥰 Would you please do a tutorial on how to blend blush? I honestly can't find one on TH-cam, all the tutorials are about blush placement--but never about how to apply it or blend it properly (what type of brush to use, what motions to make, what pressure to use, the difference in blending powder vs. cream blush, etc.)! My blush always looks patchy (no matter the brand of brush or blush), and I really hate that because it's my favorite type of makeup!
