In today's ugly beauty news, we have to address the sudden re-rise of dangerous DIY sunscreen and why everyone on tiktok seems to hate using sunscreen. Coincidentally, celebrities are speaking up about their skin cancer scares, AI is now cloning influencers voices to sell you bad products and Which? have named and exposed multiple sunscreens that failed their UV protection test! - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
I think it's shocking that you are unable to do anything about people using your image and edited videos to advertise their products. Hopefully something will be done in the future to stop this.

You can. It is illegal in most places. However, it is really expensive for a regular person to do anything about it. No lawyer is going to take the case if the client can't afford to pay them, and nobody knows who the actual company/person they want to sue is.
Well established companies know not to use anyone's likeness without permission, because they know they will be sued, and they will have to pay A LOT. Also, people won't struggle finding a lawyer willing to take the case because lawyers know a big payout is guaranteed. Now, compare this to a dropshipped product that dosens if not hundreds of unrelated companies/individuals all over the world are selling online.
I wonder if because he uses a AI program himself, if he "agreed" to terms that gave company's permissions to use his likeness. It could have been tiny writing on terms of service.

I'm 64 years old, and I grew up going to the beach. Born and raised in Louisiana meant we also had fishing camps and we would be on the boat all day in direct sun. My mom would put some Coppertone on us at the beginning of the day and never reapplied. Thankfully none of us had skin cancer, knock on wood. I also rode my horses all day, almost every day. Then I grew up and read about the harmful effects of the sun. I started slathering sunscreen on and staying out of the sun as much as possible about 20 years ago and I won't go back to baking in the sun all day. I have a few sunspots and I can't believe it's not worse to tell you the truth. WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN people! It's so easy to do and it just may save your life.

I can't help to think that before we could take more onslaught from the environment because heavy metals and other costic chemicals were not surrounding us constantly.
With all the micro plastics and waste from industrial revolution onward the incident of cancer and other autoimmune illness is going to sky rocket. Some because we can diagnose it better but idk. I've just comes to terms of the probability I will have atleast 2 cancer events in my lifetime.
I'm also from Louisiana, and my parents both grew up down here never putting on sunscreen (too poor for it).
My dad had skin cancer so bad that it went down to the bone, and my mom has had many moles tested on her back.
They always made sure I wore sun screen.
diy sunscreen: go outside, find mud, imitate the animals and rub all over until cannot see skin, repeat as needed

@@spoopyvirgil4944not just sunburns either!!! I’ve gotten sun poisoning before and that was hell. Worst sunburn ever mixed with puking and being sick all night. I don’t remember the entire event but I definitely promote sunscreen for everyone who can wear it! Sadly I’m still struggling to find sunscreen I can wear because they all burn severely when I put them on. Luckily I’m rarely in the sun for extended periods and I usually sit in the shade when I’m outside.

I started wearing sunscreen religiously after a friend died from skin cancer at 27. I will always wear sunscreen for this reason.

As an Australian, almost every person I have met over the age of 70 has had skin cancer removed and these are people that just gardened outside. Some places here hit UV index of 15.9, coconut oil won’t cut it
Second this! Plus places like QLD and probably NT & WA will be above 3 on the UV index all year round, which is threshold on the index from when sunscreen and sun protection is recommended.
Agreed! It’s like just a normal part of the Aussie life to have had at least one mole removed at some point. I live in Asia now and it’s not as common to have experienced this.
Exactly this. Almost every person I know over 45 has had suspicious moles removed and/or confirmed skin cancer. A friend of mine had their second cancerous mole removed last year and they were only 27.
I feel like people don't take skin cancer as seriously as other cancers, but it's still cancer and is still unfortunately a leading cause of death in Australia.
The idiots slathering themselves in oil wouldn't last a year with our UV damage.
I was raised in Queensland, basically living on Noosa Beach in the summer. I’m 40 now and had my first precancerous mole excised six years ago, three stitches needed. It’s no joke!
I'm a Queenslander too. I HATE the feel and smell of sunscreen but I'm still wearing it. Hats, long sleaves, and sunscreen are essential. I know way too many people who've had skin cancer. We have a crazy amount of skin care clinics in my region too
I’m the PSA for sunscreen. When I go to the beach, not only do I put at least SPF 50 on every hour, I wear a hat and sit under an umbrella. Why go? I still find it relaxing and fun to sit in the sand and watch the waves. And I occasionally get in the water.

This is me! My friends laugh at me, but I'm so pale, and having burned quite badly as a child, I vowed never to do it again
There is skin cancer and there is melanoma…my mother in law had a weird mole, she asked her doctor about it (at my request) and he said it was nothing…she later went to a dermatologist and she knew immediately it was melanoma. Removed it then and there and she went back for the biopsy. Once melanoma gets into your lymph nodes, it can be fatal in as little as six weeks. Luckily hers was not fatal and she is just fine. She isn’t a woman that spent a lot of time in the sun, either. Please wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun at the worst times of day. People saying use what our ancestors used is ridiculous…we have destroyed our natural protection in our ozone layer…the sun we have now is way stronger than the sun was even 50 years ago, let alone hundreds.
I’m so glad your mother in law is okay. My uncle passed away at 43 from melanoma, by the time he was diagnosed, it was too late and he died within 6 weeks 🥺 still miss him all the time. Wear sunscreen people! Xx

Bear fat? I'm older and the sun is much stronger now than when I was young. I get a sunburn much faster now (10 minutes) as opposed to hours before.
My thought exactly with the "use what our ancestors used", do they know what the UV index was 100 years ago, it is not the same thing, the climate has changed.

Like these people have the rights to vote and everything. Oil as sun protection seems like such bait but there are legitimately people doing this and have done for some years. It really feels like a lie to troll but over the years I have seen people online talk about using oil instead and it genuinely makes my brain hurt trying to process that these are real people with jobs and lives to live. How tf are these people functioning on a day to day basis when they think oil is a good idea to apply before the sun, it’s so crazy to me that they’re so ill-informed on thinking sun screen is harmful that they’d go out of their way to do something really irresponsible and dangerous like that. It’s wilful ignorance at this point because there’s no way these people are just naturally that stupid, they must just be unable to admit or accept the facts.

I'm fair as well and, in addition to sunscreen, I wear long-sleeved shirts and pants or skirts- linen, so I get air going through them. It helps a lot.
Same… I am ghostly white but can tan to brown at least. However I don’t try to get tan. SPF everywhere- in all bags and in car as well.
Being fair skinned myself, I find it very easy to see sunscreens work. Because if / when I don't wear sunscreen I simply get burnt. But if / when I use it, I just do not. 👌

I had skin cancer identified and removed at a skin check appointment I made after I started watching James' content. And I wore tons of sunscreen, but have spent a lifetime outside working on boats and received sun exposure theough my clothes. Wear real sunscreen everywhere!
My dad was a yacht broker so was working on the water on boats all the time. He developed skin cancer on his arm and had to have a patch removed and replaced with skin from his stomach.
I have seen someone die from skin cancer. Do not recommend. It is a painful way to go and to put your family through that...horrific.
The worst part about the DIY sunscreen are the parents making it and putting it in on their children. Those poor kids.
And it's a shame about the AI issues . Even more shame on governments not doing anything about it.
Because the AI bros are so excited about it - and because the parties pushing for heavier control on AI are usually left wing afaik, and with the amount of success the right wing parties get at the moment, controlling AI isn't political parties' biggest problem by far by now. It's all about exciting new uses for AI, no one cares about the dangers of it. There aren't even real laws regarding deepfake pornography in most places, it's a shame.
Completely agree with the ‘cover your kids’ (and yourself) up. In Australia we have a slogan that used to be ‘Slip Slop Slap’ which has now changed to ‘Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide’ which stands for: Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on some sunglasses.
My sister is currently in surgery getting skin cancer removed from her lower eye waterline. My cousin had the same surgery ten years ago.
Wear sunscreen, please! And cover your eyes. Make sure your sunglasses have the proper protective factors and aren’t just aesthetically pleasing.
Edit: RE: Sunscreens failing the independent testing. In Australia we have the most strict rules when it comes to sunscreen. Lots of popular sunscreens used overseas aren’t available here because they don’t meet our requirements. Or, if they are sold here their SPF rating is a lot lower. Something 50+ in America might only be 15 or 30 in Australia.
I also hate the “melanin will protect you from the sun rhetoric”. The sun doesn’t discriminate. I live in the skin cancer capital of the world. Suncreen is everything. They teach sun safety to children from kindergarten here haha.

Too many people don't put on enough sunscreen (it's supposed to be about 1/4 of a teaspoon, I believe) and don't seem to know that you're supposed to reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours, and after you've been sweating or swimming. Then they blame their sunburns on the sunscreen. 😥
Hmm 1/4 tsp seems small I’m usually using about a tsp. Google is not giving me a definitive answer but between 1/4 - 1 tsp on the face also would depend on the formula.

Basal cell skin cancer usually doesn’t spread but squamous cell and melanoma do spread and can kill you. Sunscreen and protective wear are so important. I’m a cancer nurse and work with patients who go through hell with metastatic skin cancer

Australia has Ozone layer over it... It's a well-known misconception, but facts Ave science have proven the ozone hole DOES NOT extend over Australia. Ozone depleting substances have resulted in a thinning of ozone above Australia of about five percent, but Australia is still protected by the ozone layer. Also, the hole in the ozone layer is a seasonal occurrence.

I'm as pale as the day is long ("beacons are lit!" levels of pale) and the mere thought of *not* wearing sunscreen is terrifying. I could never. My mom grew up in the 60s and 70s when SPF was still a "new" thing and has had a couple carcinomas removed. And my dad worked in a job where he was outside most of the year. He rarely ever wore sunscreen and now his face, head, neck, back are scarred where he's had *multiple* cancerous masses removed. Wear your damn sunscreen people! And not homemade stuff!

This was the simplest phrase I ever heard that made me not EVER want to tan again, or go out in the sun without protection… “You put oil in a pan to fry something right? Why would it be any different for your skin?” 🤯 my simple mind was blown and I can’t look at tanning oils the same. Even if they have a SPF.

A holistic approach to medicine is "characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness", and as you can imagine from that definition it is a very much recommended thing to all doctors (yes, medschools do talk about that). A "holistic" surgeon just means a surgeon who chooses a holistic approach in his practice and patients, it's not a legal title or anything.

If you look sunburnt while pedaling a "diy sunscreen" I think whoever falls for it might just deserve the hard lesson there.
I wear sunscreen on my face year round. I got into the habit a couple years ago and I just have kept it since. The key is finding a sunscreen that you like applying. I used to despise putting on the sunscreens that I had available in physical stores, because they were all shit. Hop on stylevana and get yourself a decent few bottles of sunscreen and repurchase every few months. Trust me, your skin will love you for it.
Depending on where you live the sun can be even more direct during the winter so it's definitely important year round! And when it snows and the snow reflects the UV onto your face 😵💫
Omg, yes, as an American, there are many Korean and Japanese sunscreens that are so much nicer to put on! From what I've used, it seems Korean ones tend to include more skincare ingredients and like "tone up" (essentially a small degree of white cast to make your skin look lighter), while Japanese ones seem to focus more on texture that is pleasant to wear. I could be wrong, but that's my impression.
I use Glowscreen EVERY DAY. I don’t wear foundation (just concealer) and my face/skin love it! I never had anything I loved until then! You are so right!

My mum is 73 and was of course in the generation that oiled themselves up and sat in the sun. She had basal cell carcinoma removed from her nose last year.
Which did this a few years ago and it turns out they had affiliate links for the sunscreens they stated had "passed" their testing. At the time Caroline Hirons called them out on This Morning and they issued a public apology.
Getting a mole removed isn’t always a quick and easy process. I had to book in with a plastic surgeon and I’m left with a pretty bad scar and some pain due to the location (not to mention the cost of private treatment). I have to visit a skin clinic twice a year. Thanks to my parents who didn’t believe in sunscreen and let me burn to a crisp every summer as a kid (I’m a child of the 80s!)
Got into an argument with an aesthetician who thought they knew more about skin than a dermatologist. They thought dermatologists only dealt with hair 😂 I had to educate them what the “derm” in dermatologist means lol

I am mexican and my natural tone is a little pale. I got burned by years of negligence by not using suncreen, as a resulst my arms are a little dark, and my forehead and some zones of my face, including my lips.
Since I got into skincare thanks to my acne, some of that has begun to go away by using benozyl peroxide for my acne, and glycolic acid for my lips, arms and hyperpigmentation on thr inside of my legs.
Is a must for me to use sunscreen for my skincare routine to work, and I use it religiously.
Even if they were safe, you know what's way easier than making an "easy DIY sunscreen?" Buying a premade sunscreen.
It's hilarious hearing about these doctors because I'm a Ph D student in a *social science* and my first impulse, if someone brought me that claim, is to **read the methods section**. Immediately. The abstract, even, will mention those kinds of caveats. These MDs are clearly reading either a summary of a summary, an AI summary, or something else.
The AI thing is super scary especially with celebrities licensing their voice and likeness to these companies. This is why i take everything on the internet with a grain of salt

Hi there! In regard to becoming an Esthetician in the U.S., it depends on what state you’re in. I’m in California and 600 hours of accredited training is required and one has to pass a state exam. In other states, anyone washing your face for you or waxing your brows can call themselves an Esthetician .
My issue with the sunscreen thing is why does every source almost available to the average consumer state that mineral sunscreens “reflect the suns rays”? If it’s not the case, why is it so wide spread and even current sources are all saying the same thing? 😩
I'm a chemist (not pharmacist), 1st in chemistry. Currently also doing a lvl5 and 7 in aesthetics. The main reason I'm doing this is because of my knowledge with the chemicals and wanting to contribute to a better industry.
Scientists need to be more careful with the information they release because they get picked up by people who have no knowledge of how the chemical processes or machines used to identify them work.
Without even looking at the study on benzoyl peroxide, I can say I'm not surprised it was detected. Even if they didn't heat it up, if they used a mass spec, I would expect a mass spec to detect benzene. Why? Because b.p has two benzene rings present in its structure. A mass spec literal ionises and fragments the structure with heat, which is how we determine the structure of a molecule. Does that mean it contains benzene? Yes, But within a chemically bonded compound. Not in its singular form, which is what is cancerous to humans.
And no one is going to store their products at a temperature the oven of a mass spec gets to, even in the hottest country.
To end on. I'm also currently a teacher and my students are always impressed by my age because of my skin quality. Why? SPF30 religiously for the past 15 years. And then they get shocked at me telling them off for not wearing any. I rarely get mad at them for academic stuff but when I catch them with a sunburn they see a different person!
My cousin developed melanoma in her 30s - her mother was all about holidays in the sun whereas her sister, my mum, was all about being pale and interesting (and we once had an absolute shouting match over my having worn sunblock for months, but working largely outside, even taking lots of breaks and staying mostly in the shade I still got a tan) and using as high a factor as was available. It’s hard to find something that doesn’t make my skin react, but but what happened to my cousin made me even more diligent than I used to be - and I’m the kind of person who uses sunblock as body lotion in summer!
PS my cousin was caught super early and made a full recovery, has had her first kid but is now a paid up member of the pale and interesting brigade

@@Username0467 depends on when and why. Personally my hair doesn’t like them, but they’re nearly unavoidable. Depends on the formula, but they are not usually necessary when we have more beneficial and environmentally “better” ingredients in 2024.
Since starting her tricho classes she has a better of an idea how hair works thankfully. I really don’t like her “not sponsored” sponsored bs haha she doesn’t often take into account individual needs and circumstances with hair so her blanket statements need a lot of clarifying- as well as the hair. Ha
I grew up in a culture where everyone is about beauty, staying young, etc. But also tanning a lot of tanning. And no sunscreen. Maybe some for children, like on their nose, cheeks and sholders. But adult women, even to this day, are trying to tan as much as possible. My mom recently had a breast cancer scare, thankfully she's ok, but she continues to tan. I really hate it
I'm naturally tanned and my mom always said we didn't need sunscreen because of it. I got burned for the first time when I was 18 now I always make sure my younger siblings and myself wear it correctly.
People with darker skin tones seem to always be told we are immune to the sun. Everyone needs it!!

My father in law died from skin cancer. He was paper white, but stayed in the spanish sun all sommer long. He never wore sunscreen. His doctor said he was surprised that he made it without cancer his first 60 years.
I remember (years ago) when Roger Ebert's wife cried when a company recreated his voice (after an illness that prevented him from speaking anymore) and they talked about how they had to process hours of video footage of his voice and all the effort it took, and all James had to do was read a paragraph and got something that was better than all that. LOL that is crazy.
My family is very suseptible to skin cancer. I remember grandaddy losing part of his ear and nose. Dad had a part on his arm that was his drivers side of his body. I get to see my aunts and uncles when they come in for their skin checks. Please wear a sun screen. I truly appreciate you James.
As a paper-pale white person who can't tan even if I wanted to, sunscreen does work because when I accidentally miss a little spot on my back and go out in the sun it BURNS and the areas I applied sunscreen doesnt

worked in an nhs pathology lab for a year and omg it truly terrified me how many BCC and SCC specimens we would get in on a DAILY basis. i live in a very small city and we got in literally hundreds a day across all age ranges, please please get checked and wear sunscreen!! i know in the uk espescially we so bad for going out in the sun and burning. that 1/2 cancer statistic is terrifying but true, luckily tho most of the time it is these early stage very treatable skin cancers.

I am not white, I am Latina and tanned very easily but even with my type of skin I am very protective, and if I am going to sit under the sun, I don’t wear anything less than spf65 but only for like 20 minutes(I don’t go beyond that or even I will get sunburned).
@kindseyvaughn8667 I have the same skintone and also rarely burn mostly because I put on sunscreen and cover up.

Hmm, if you were in a sunnier environment than usual, for longer than usual, maybe you needed to apply more frequently? And maybe a higher spf for that situation? Clothing with upf and a hat might be good, too. Idk, just throwing some suggestions out there.
Artificial intelligence is scary to me. Maybe I'm old (58 years old) and to use it to disseminate false content is worrisome to me. I prefer REAL James!!!

As a child growing up in south america in the 90's let me tell you the ozone hole was a massive concern of mine and they made it enough of a big deal for me to avoid the sun as much as possible.
My dad got skin cancer on his head twice (I don't know if it BCC or SCC.) because he never wore a hat and spends a TON of time outdoors taking care of the farm. He started going bald in his 20s back in the 70s, and besides some toupees for formal events and a cowboy hat when out riding horses, if he was working outside there would be nothing on his chrome dome. He said it was too hot to wear. I remember there being an absolutely ancient bottle of sunscreen in the bathroom cupboard -- SFP 7, for tanning (do they even make suncreen that low anymore?) . I think I remember him using it once. Just on his arms. He's now learned his lesson at age 70. 😅
As someone who spend their youth in the tropics, in a family that didn't believe in sunscreen, I'm a walking PSA. I've had multiple scares. It's really scary how anti science some people are. I've had to explain to multiple colleagues why I carry sunscreen around and re apply so often. My own family has tried to explain to me that I'm too pale and should enjoy the sun more (I do enjoy the sun, just with the proper precautions). My grandma has had a ton of procedures to remove skin cancer, and so has my mom. Neither of them have managed to link their incessant outdoor activities (without a single precaution, because otherwise they won't tan) with the state of their skin. It's honestly kind of scary how stubborn people can be about stuff they don't want to be true.
The way you use the AI voice tech is what it should be used for. Small, private, personal use to fill in gaps to make life easier. But James, please be very careful-there is a very high chance that your voice has been sold/is being used without your knowledge. Please double check the T&Cs, and know that even if they haven’t snuck something in there, they’re probably still doing it.
Also with the sunscreens: Bondi Sands is an Australian brand. We have the strictest regulations about sun protection in the world. While they might be selling different formulas in different countries, it’s really unlikely. That makes me seriously question the study.
I'm on anti rejection medication after transplant surgery and it does make me more sensitive to UV and UVB rays. Everyone should be wearing sunscreen everyday and get checked out by dermatologists. So sick of coconut oil being used as "sunscreen" not a thing.

People really need to stop volunteering to train AI if they don't want it having the ability to mislead people. If you are offering up the information, you have no one else to blame. Even when you clone things or ask for goofy images you are contributing to the issue by adding to it's bank. Don't want companies using it or stealing intellectual properties and cutting jobs, than stop supporting them if they use AI in those ways.
I live in Germany and here an article stated that the Garnier sunscreen and the lidl one did not pass the testing
I finished my beauty therapy course about 2 years ago and I'm in the UK. We did get taught a lot about anatomy and physiology ect, but I wouldn't say we were taught enough to be able to comment on sun screens and their efficacy. We were taught to point clients in the direction of GP's ect. I don't know how much they get taught in the US though xx
Sunscreen is so important. I live in Australia and have an extremely pale skin tone from my Irish family background and even though I live and die by the slip, slop, slap, seek, slide rules; I have still developed sun damage moles on my hands (those f*ckers are the hardest thing to protect in the heat) and face that need to be checked by a derm a few times a year. I share my skin tone with my 70yo dad and his whole face and body are riddled with scars of cancer removal.
I currently have a splinter in my foot that we can’t get out so thanks very much for this video! I always enjoy watching them! :D

Skin cancer runs in my family so I’ve (thankfully) made sure my skin is protected and healthy my whole life. It sucks other people in my family had to go through it but it made me very cautious about making sure I’m sun safe and I’m thankful for that.
Any "professional" with the term "natural" or "holistic" in their name is an immediate red flag. Keep walking.
I work with a skin cancer surgeon. Although skin cancer can be hereditary, wearing your sunscreen can definitely help. Wearing sunscreen is like wearing a seatbelt in a car accident. Most of our patients are boomers because sunscreen was not a thing back in their day. But Melanoma can be life threatening. No lie.

Omg no!! Coconut oil used to be the biggest fad in my late teens, like everyone was mad about its benefits topically and by consuming it. I had really dry skin at the time (the dry Australian climate will do that to you) and I lathered my body up in coconut oil but didn’t put any sunscreen on. I’m telling you now, I was basically deep fried! No matter what other ingredients you put in there, if you’ve just quickly mixed up some oils in your kitchen, those oils will burn you alive.
Bondi Sands is the only sunscreen that I love using, it just fits my lifestyle and skin type so much. I spent more than 3 years searching for the perfect sunscreen. I really DONT want to stop using it.

1. Use of someone else's original video or audio in an unauthorised manner (e.g. in unapproved ads) is usually copyright infringement.
2. Use of AI-generated content to sound like an influencer endorsing a product they have not endorsed would still violate consumer laws. Over here it would be misleading or deceptive conduct.

James if you want to know what estheticians learn in school I teach esthetics and have full access to my students coursework (obviously haha) and I can tell you that the information is updated very frequently and it’s up to date but sadly there’s no regulations that force us to update our actual knowledge to keep our licenses. It’s encouraged to take a class a year, but most Esti’s don’t and are very stubborn and stuck in their ways. Plus many estheticians have severe egos and refuse to learn new things, it’s very sad.
if theres one thing i tell my students, its to always keep growing and learning because this industry changes daily.

We cooked in the sun, but the sun was definitely not as ferocious as it is now. I've looked after my skin for years and use spf 50 on my face every day without fail. I have the best DIY sun screen. I live in AZ so I should know. Stay inside, if your outside wear sunscreen clothing. No bare skin at all. I have Lupus and I break out in hives from the sun. I rarely go into the sun, I have a very large patio cover in my back yard so .I do get outside safely. I actually get a light tan from sitting outside under a cover and the sun never touching my skin.

As an esthetician I just wanna say sunscreen isn't just about preserving "beauty" or "youth" but SUNSCREEN CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE
where i live we get uv ratings above 11. once it hits like 9 we have to go on inclement weather and keep the children inside at school! it's so dangerous! i wear sunscreen year round and do my best to do it every day, regardless of even if im going outside that day. i had a job where i was working outside a lot and even in the extreme heat i'd wear long sleeves. it's worth it to me to protect my skin
