30 years later this movie can still hold it's ground against any film in the genre and is still one of the best sci-fi / action films of all time.
And will forever will be. Perfection.
Aliens is better. And older. But T2 is decent. I saw both in the theater. The crowd reaction to Aliens is the most positive, frenetic response I've ever seen in a theater. People clapped and cheered at the Get away from her you bitch! Scene. But to each their own.
Also Aliens effects were all practical.

You know what sucks about that? Cameron said he wishes he can go back and change it with cgi so that the helicopter is bouncing around more. Can you believe that shit? Dude has slipped a little.
BTS: The pilot who jumped out of the helicopter is actually flying the chopper during the highway chase/shootout.
Which is why I always suck in my breath whenever I see that scene. If I'm watching an action sequence and I don't feel anxious, it's always because it was cgi and I don't FEEL the danger anymore.
During an interview with Robert Patrick the director said that in the garage scene he ran so fast that he actually caught the kid running. It took a few takes cause he almost caught him every single time.
Anyone could run faster with those cosmetically-pinned ears :)
If i remember correctly, Patrick trained in track and field events, no wonder he could run so well.
The Director's Cut of this movie expands the story, including a scene before the 3rd Act, where Sarah and John reprogram Arnold's Terminator so he can learn new things. It's helps explain why he picks up some more human characteristics towards the later part of the film, including smiling and understanding why John cries at the end.
I'm sad that more people don't recognize Arnie's weird smile as a direct imitation of John's cheeky smile. He's just being a machine and copying what another human does. He also only does it when he is facing a human directly. It's performative.
They were watching the directors cut. The t1000 glitches were only in that version

While those scenes are great (albeit unnecessary) the ending of the Director's Cut completely destroys the vibes. I'm very thankful they went with the ending they did for the theatrical.
Yeah, the scene explains that the Terminators have the capability to learn, but have that turned off before they're sent into the field - so they literally just need to flip a switch to allow Arnold to learn things. Just don't think too hard about why John didn't flip that switch before sending the Terminator back...
Fun Fact: Janelle, John's foster mother, is played by Jeannette Goldstein, the same actress who played the badass marine Private Vasquez in Aliens.

Robert patricks performance is so much more intense when you notice he doesn`t blink when shooting a gun and he doesn`t breathe when he is running so fast.
He apparently spent months perfecting both to look more like a robot.
And shoot guns with both arms

Two little details I love: In the early flashforward when we see John Connor as an adult, watch the way he moves - his head and eye movements are an echo of the Terminator's because he learned how to be tough and strong and unyielding from his machine "dad". And when the Terminator picks up the mini-gun for the first time, his smile is a deliberate imitation of John's, which you see in the next shot - the smile crawls up the side of their faces in exactly the same way. He's learning how to be human, but he's learning specifically from John. So each of them takes something from the other. :D
Wow. Didn't notice that but I did observe that adult Connor did move awkwardly in that scene always thought it was bc of just bad acting.

When Sarah shoots her way into Dyson's house and he answers her rage with "What?" - at that moment she saw herself, and realized that _she had become a Terminator._ That was the revelation that stopped her from killing him. The idea that she had become a killing machine to the point of being willing to kill someone who was fundamentally innocent of any crime was too much for her. And that proved that she was not truly mad, that her trauma had not crippled her completely, and that she could come back - at least enough to do what she had to do without succumbing to the evil she was fighting. Deep and dark, indeed.
It's cool how Samantha got to be genuinely surprised by the character twist. Not all T2 audiences are so lucky because the movie trailer gives the twist away!
I was so worried she was going to be spoiled too, that I left a comment to not read the comments and watch T2 right away! This is the first reaction I've seen where they didn't know from the trailer or pop culture osmosis. So glad to see it!

I'm amazed anyone would not know that twit, even if you've never seen the movie before. It just feels like something you'd pick up from other people after all this time.
My friend went into the theatre having avoided all the trailers, and was truly surprised by Arnold saying "get down!" to John in the mall hallway. Ever since then I've been avoiding trailers whenever possible, especially a few weeks before a movie releases.
It's so cool to see someone surprised by the Terminator antagonist/protagonist swap!
Yeah the goddamn trailer spoiled that for me when I was a kid waiting for it to release.

How can a movie about murderous, time-traveling robots so easily bring me to tears? This is one of my absolute favorite movies. Great reactions!
Because of good character moments and enough internal consistency to immerse you despite the fantastic events playing out.
It's a combo almost everyone in Hollywood _thinks_ they can do, but few actually can.
Fun fact: on the early takes of the mall garage chase, Robert Patrick (T-1000) ran so fast he caught John Connor on his dirt bike.

He also holds his breath and doesn't blink during most shots, to maximize the slightly unsettling feel of the character.

Terminator Salvation is okay. Not as good as the first two, but sure as f*ck better than what came after
Meh, each to their own... with the release of Dark Fate picking up where this movie left off, the others are considered alternate timelines. I enjoy them on that basis. Dark Fate I think really sets it up for a new generation.
13:36 Linda Hamilton's acting will always be some of the best. She knows that even with all the training and skills, a Terminator appearing in front of her is still a sign that marks the "end" that is coming. Imagine how scary it was for Sarah... the machine that hunted her and killed Kyle was now back.
Also, small detail that may or may not be actually real... but it's been discussed that one reason that Sarah kept running despite her son John calling out to her was because Sarah remembers that the Terminator can mimic voices. The acting feels so convincing too.
Her acting when she goes to kill Dyson is also superb, she herself becomes a terminator in that moment and as she stalks closer to the house to finish the job is always chilling.
She deserved an Oscar just for the interview at the hospital alone. "Him, you, everybody..."
You know the director and actor is outstanding good when they make you cry for real over a machine :´)
Joe Morton, who played Dyson, had suffered a collapsed lung a few years earlier and knew EXACTLY what it felt like to be fighting for every breath, resulting in one of the most painfully realistic hyperventilation scenes ever.

That's dark to think about despite the acting it was real in both situations, movie and life itself, damn very dark yet impactful as well.
That scene is so messed up. All the SWAT guys had to do was move the clacker away and he couldn't have detonated the explosives.

Fun Fact: The man taking pictures of the T-800 after breaking through the glass is the police officer 1L-19 from the first Terminator who arrived at Tech-Noir only for the T-800 to knock him out and steal his car. Hence why he's so shocked to see him again. And Robert Patrick ran so fast he actually had to purposefully slow down or else he would easily overtake the motorbike John was on.
Actually in most of the shots (particularly those showing Edward Furlong in closeup) they have a tow pulling the bike, and what they did was have it go faster. According to Cameron, initially the crewman driving the tow said it was already quick enough to where Robert Patrick supposedly wouldn't catch Furlong but not only did RP catch up, he even tapped Eddie on the shoulder. So they sped it up even more.
Indeed RP was indeed an insane runner tho. Even a decade later in X-Files there's spots where you can tell Patrick did cut down his run speed or he would ended some eps early, lol.
Sounds a bit like how directors had to ask Bruce Lee to slow down his martial arts moves because the camera barely even caught the blur.
Its even more impressive, since Patrick wasn't breathing while he was running. He would do those incredible bursts of speed, while holding his breath, to give the impression of the T-1000 as this utterly inhuman machine, not showing any signs of being alive.

I love that Arnie plays this terrifying unstoppable killing machine in the first film, but in the sequel he is written so well that we fall in love with him and becomes a hero and father-figure. He becomes more human than the majority of human characters we meet throughout the film.

The dream Sarah has of nuclear apocalypse is one of the most intense parts of the entire Terminator franchise.

It always amazes me to realize the actress who played John Conner's foster mother is the same actress who played Private Vasquez in Aliens.
She was also in movies like Lethel Weapon 2 with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and the Titanic movie with Leonardo De Caprio as the mother of her two children when the Titanic was about to sink and that movie was directed by James Cameron, the same director who made the two Terminator movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and True Lies with Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold, including the late Bill Paxton.

She went to audition for Aliens (a Jewish woman pretending to be a Latina) thinking that it was about Illegal immigration. I have a close friend who is Latina and she thought the woman who was Vasquez was a real Latina. Cameron was so impressed he made a role for her and included her mistake as a joke in the film.
They painted her skin darker in Aliens so it is hard to see the resemblance at first.

This was an action movie with heart. James Cameron wrote & directed not only T1 & T2 but also Aliens (another action movie with heart). The man can make good sequels!

Eh, bit of an asterisk on the "wrote T1" part. Cameron claimed to have written it alone, but then he got sued by Harlan Ellison. Part of the settlement was that weird "Acknowledgement to the works of Harlan Ellison" card at the end of T1. We'll probably never know the whole story, but, comparing their other works, the whole "Terminator" concept feels a lot more like Ellison than Cameron to me.
That ending would never have been as impactful without the thumbs-up.
T2 is one of my top few favorite films of all time, and the greatest action film of all time. Thanks for reacting to it.
Imagine seeing this in 1991. It was just unreal. I also hadn't seen The Abyss yet so the liquid metal special effects were jaw dropping to me at the time.
Yes, it needs to be said, Cameron wasn’t just utilizing CGI, he was pioneering those effects. Nothing like this had been seen.
I did and i was 10 or 11 years old at that time. Damn it was cool. Later i bought it on VHS from rental store (rental casette) and watched it propably 30-50 times until i sold it to small candy store at 1996 witch also rented videos. Later i just had to buy it again as it came out as DVD. Still one of my favourite movie.
I was 10 when this came out. I was too young at the cinema. I remember the trailers and the posters clearly. I rented on VHS and watched it about 100 times in 30 years.

That look of just utter terror on her face in that short scene where she first sees Arnold's terminator walking out of that elevator, even though I've LITERALLY seen this movie probably 100 times (I wish I was joking, this is my favorite movie of all time and it never gets old), that moment still gets to me, how she went from bad-ass escaping the hospital to just sheer terror, damsel in distress from Terminator 1 in a moment.
It's such a real look of horror... like her worst fear has come true. It's like a war veteran suddenly waking up one day and being back in the war.
I saw this in the cinema when it came out. I was 13, and words can't express just how mind blowing it was at the time! Everyone was uncontrollably blubbing at the end, and it left a real permanent emotional mark. I consider it to be the perfect film.
Robert Patrick's portrayal of the T-1000 is often overlooked, but is a crucial part of the movie. Arnie was threatening in the original partially down to his sheer size, but despite the fact that he towers over Patrick it's clear that the T-1000 is a menacing villain, and the superior 'killing machine' . From the way that he runs, to the cold expression on his face, and his emotionless voice. The fact that he trained himself not to blink when firing a gun is a testament to his dedication to the role.
Robert Patrick trained for the running scenes he did and was very fast that he could keep up with the dirt bike without tiring.

I remember Patrick saying he studied the face of Eagles to get that scowl/stare just right.
Patrick legit scared me as a kid but I still loved watching this movie lol.
T2 is still my favorite action film of all time. one of my favorite films in general. A real masterpiece of cinema

Goofs in super hero outfits bashing toys together is not what i call good action. Usually just chaos cinema (look up the term).
The VFX in this one are so fascinating. Also, I'm super impressed Robert Patrick taught himself to empty magazines without blinking like that. It really adds to his performance.

Its even more impressive if you go pick up even just an empty cap gun irl and dry fire it, most people will still blink even tho its not even loud
No blinking. Impressive. The T-1000 is like the anti-Axel-Foley. Eddie Murphy blinks _so badly_ when firing guns.
Arnold Schwarzenegger taught him self to how fire weapons and load them without looking to for Terminator 2. He was able to fire the lever action shot gun and twirl it to chamber the next bullet. Arnold and Robert Patrick were able to make their actions look like they were convincing machines onscreen.
This movie really holds up well for 1991. It's stands the test of time really I remember watching this back in 91 at the theatre and thinking that this was maybe the best movie I had seen at that point in my life. Very enjoyable and the action along with the plot was great. Probably the best movie released for 1991

He did a great job. When he gets out of the squad car at the Voights house it looks as though he is scanning the whole area for threats, kind of like a cat.
Terminator 1 and 2 are amazing movies. I'm just really glad that the franchise stopped there and they didn't do something really stupid, like make a string of horrific sequels that got progressively worse and worse as they went on.
Hollywood would never do anything like that, since artistic integrity is always their top priority. That is why their movies continue to get better and better, and why they keep turning out masterpiece after masterpiece today.
There were other Terminator movies but they were just bad fan fiction.

Nope, they only made two Alien movies. And they were amazing. No sequels exist. Nope. Not a one.
(Minor disclaimer: Alien 3 isn't actually that bad as a movie. Some of the shots in it are visually incredible, especially the Director's Cut. But the narrative choices in it are.... .....well, they're just wrong. In every possible way. I won't post any spoilers incase you guys haven't watched it yet, but if you did decide to skip it you wouldn't be missing out. It'll leave a bad taste in your mouth after the high of Aliens.
Alien 4 made me hate myself for watching it.).

The scene with the security guard seeing his double was done with practical effects. The actor had a twin brother and the shot with them looking eye to eye was done in real time with the twin brothers. Very cool.....
I think one of the shots of Sarah Conner in a mirror was also done using Linda Hamilton's sister as a stand-in for her reflection.

The regular film crew refused to film the helicopter flying under the overpass because they thought the pilot would die and they didn't want to film someone's death. The pilot was fine with the stunt and James Cameron filmed it himself with the help of a driver.
And they did the stunt twice because Cameron wanted a shot from the front and one from the back of the helicopter
Yeah, the great stunt pilot Chuck Tamburrro flew the police helicopter under the bridge. He also has a cameo as the pilot who jumps out when the T1000 tells him to.

Poor Samantha. She was so used to Arnie always being the hero she wrongly assumed he would be playing the good guy in the first Terminator and now that she's gotten used to that fact they go and switch it on her.

Yep. I remember this being the first movie I cried after. I was maybe six at the time when i saw it and didn't even understand english yet. But somehow Arnold, the music etc made such an impact.

You've just had the pleasure of watching the best action science fiction movie ever made
For me it's the best movie ever made. It has everything. So intense, with so many emotions striking you every scene.
The one thing that truly pulls on my heart strings in this movie is the scene where John, Sarah, Terminator are fleeing mental hospital in the car after evading liquid terminator. Sarah motions to John for what looks like a motherly embrace but all she wanted to do is examine him for injuries. John was crestfallen. He was expecting a motherly embrace with affection. It was a gut punch for him.
The channel Cinema Therapy recently did a video on this movie. They address that scene specifically. You could do worse than watch it. I recommend pretty much everything on that channel.

@@ActionJackson1982 According to Cameron, there was almost a meter gap in total. Plenty of room for a skilled pilot.
Cameron and the stunt pilot flew the chopper under the bridge the night before they shot the stunt, just to make sure that it was possible.
This film is the perfect blend of live action/ real stunts, and CGI. More recent films, especially Genysis suffered because of wacky stunts which were entirely CGI, which take the viewers 'out of the movie', because the viewer knows that it's CGI.

One of my favourite T2 memories is when I finally watched it on the big screen (IMAX at Ontario Place), and realizing that the T-1000 was flying the chopper with a third arm, thus explaining how he was able to cock and reload his gun the whole time.

one of my favorite little details in this film that most people probably don't even notice is when the terminator opens the door to Dyson's house and a heavy piece of metal clangs to the floor. It was obviously meant to be some kind of heavy-duty security measure to re-inforce the door against break-ins, but the terminator just walked through it like it wasn't even there.
Also, the ripple that goes up the T-1000's face after he pins the terminator's arm was a glitch. It was meant to show that it had been damaged by being frozen and shattered and now it was malfunctioning. There's more in the director's cut. However, since the rest got cut, it just looks like a random bit of weirdness.
Besides a GREAT story-line, one of the many reasons why T2 is so SUCCESSFUL is the fact that James NEVER heavily relied on CGI. His team and James, perfectly blended the practical effects and CGI into the film.

This movie was meant to be the end of the story there wasn't any plan for a third movie. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton didn't come back to do the third movie because the story had been finished here. So given that this franchise has multiple timelines just think of the later movies as being alternate realities.
Except salvation. Salvation was a good movie with an absolute shit ending that completely ruined it. But it was the sequel that every terminator fan wanted, no time travel just the rise of john connor and the machines learning from their mistakes, just not executed properly. But it does go by this timeline. Salvation shouldve just ended the way the ps2 game ended, with reese chasing the t800 through the time displacement machine, completing the loop.
Terminator 3 should have been the war with the machines and how John rose to be the leader of mankind.

I like to consider Universal Studio's 'Terminator 2 3D: Race Across Time ' as the true sequel to the first two movies.
Amazing the Movie was made over 30 years ago and the CGI still incredible even now.
That orange glow you see when Arnie emerges was a compound that reacted when you shawn light directly onto it. I always thought the special effects dept. heated the crap out of it with a flame before shooting. LOL.
Interesting fact: When they first shot the T-1000 chasing J Connor on the bike he actually caught up to him pretty easily.
The actor who Plays Dyson was in a car crash and one of his lungs collapsed. When you see and hear him hyperventilating as such, that was him recreating his experience. Dark, huh?

The deleted scene when they reset the T-800's switch should have been left in; it's only 5 minutes and massive character development with Sarah finally trusting John for once.

True that, when I was a kid I lived in a rough home environment with horrible drug addict parents at the time. I forgive them now but at the time we had T2 on VHS and I watched it all the time throughout the years. I think I still tear up every single time I watch this movie's ending because in a lot of ways Arnold's character was like a hero father figure in my eyes. A few years ago I bought the Director's cut on Amazon and watch it occasionally even though I've seen the movies probably hundreds of times as a kid. The director's cut adds allot of context and depth even for the 10 or so extra minutes of cut scenes from the theatrical cut.
I think its a good scene but in reality, the movie doesnt need it to be great

I'm actually very glad that you guys watched the theatrical cut first. One thing to keep in mind is that James Cameron doesn't call the longer edition a Director's Cut. It's an extended edition. But he considers what he released in theaters as his director's cut. There are some movies that 100% are better in all ways in their director's cut version (e.g. Kingdom of Heaven is a notable one). But often times, a longer cut isn't necessarily the better version. For instance, the Extended Edition Lord of the Rings movies are fun movies for super fans on rewatch, but if I show those films to a new viewer, I always show them the theatrical cut first, it just flows better. Same with T2. The Extended Edition has a lot of cool scenes in a vacuum, but as a film, it doesn't flow as well.

The first Terminator was actually one of the first 2 movies I've ever watched. I was 6 years old as well, and I watched it with my parents. The other one was Jaws. I didn't even understand the concept of films, I thought it was what really happened LMAO I was super young, give me some slack.
I was 11 when this was in the theater. I still remember that day 😃
First one was more violent and scary. I was always scared of the eyeless terminator as a kid until i saw T2 and then I always loved arnold from that point haha.

Cameron is a master of using FX in a way that will forever look good. (with Terminator there was only so much he could do with 6 million dollars) The CGI in T2 was revolutionary, but the liquid metal terminator was relatively easy to render compared to something like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park so that's why Cameron used it. Most of the other FX were done practically, and often not even with miniatures. The Cyberdyne Systems building explosion, for example... that was an actual office building that they really blew up with real explosives. They really did drive a semi-truck off a bridge, and they really did fly a helicopter under a freeway overpass. That stuff is all real. In the director's cut there is one REALLY impressive scene they unfortunately had to cut out where Sarah and John cut into the T-800's head to flip a switch on his CPU and allow him to learn - they pull off that shot using Linda Hamilton's real-life twin sister standing on the other side of a fake mirror. Seamless.
THIRTY TWO years old! Being blown away about this movie now is like us being blown away in 1990 by a movie from 1958! Movies from the 80's are STILL grabbing audiences!!! Go Gen X!!!

Yeah there's very few movies nowadays i've enjoyed. The most recent ones are john wick 3 and 1917. Those two are worth watching.
@@gohanangered9650 John Wick 3 is a great action flick, but John Wick 1 is a better film. 1917 was great too. Beautiful film. Cinemetography was fine by Roger Deakons. He also did the cinemetography on Blade Runner 2049. And it's one of the few modern sequels that I think is an absolute masterpiece.

someone recently pointed out to me that the actress playing John's stepmom, played Vasquez in Aliens, and the Irish mother with her two sons in Titanic as it sank.
Actually she was John Connor's foster mother and yes she was in the movie Titanic, which was also directed by James Cameron as the Irish mom with her two kids and was in the Lethel Weapon 2 with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

I was there. I was 9 at the time. It was a packed house and everyone totally jumped out of their skin when the endoskeleton stepped on the skull
His foster mom is not only Vasquez in Aliens, she's also in James Cameron's Titanic. She plays the mom in third class who tells her children a bedtime story as the boat sinks since most people in third class were locked in and couldn't get to lifeboats.
The sequels couldn't measure up to this. Terminator 1 and 2 remain the finest of the Era, and measure up very well even today
For me, it has always been the story that was the most interresting thing about these movies. The self-fulfilling timetravel thing. I also love the level and number of practical effects in the second one. Obviously there is a lot of cgi, but the practical effects are impressive.
Actually not as much as you might think. About half of the T-1000 stuff was practical and virtually all of the stunts were real. And the few fully CGI scenes were intercut with real (or miniature) stuff in order to help sell the CGI. Like the nitrogen truck is real, CGI, and a miniature at various times during its entry to the steel mill.
I believe there are only like 11 minutes of CGI on screen. They used GGI for what they couldn't accomplish with practical. The way it should be done IMO.
@@zachf4877 absolutly agree. CGI should be a help, not the main thing in a movie.
This CGI is the hardest for me to identify because the seams *can* be smooth. The liquid metal doesn't have the finely detailed edge that even human skin does. The main problem with the CGI is that the liquid metal texture is a slightly different color than the metal when it's solid and the lighting is slightly off.
10 year old me says this is the best action movie of all time. I still love watching this after all these years. The special effects STILL hold up.

Side note. I remember seeing this not long after it came out. The special effects were ground breaking. This quite literally, was like nothing ever seen before. Still holds up well today. Easily my fave sci fi movie of all time.
A million awesome things about T2, but one of my favourite facts is that Linda Hamilton actually picked both locks to get out if her cell.
Apparently Billy Idol was cast for the other Terminator but got injured just before shooting.
You can't EVER top Robert Patrick as the T1000. The guy's a legend.
In the director's cut there is a scene where John removes an inhibitor in the terminator's brain that prevents it from learning. This scene, and the corresponding scenes where John is trying to teach him to be more human, all contribute to a more impactful ending.
When the T-101 says, "I know now why you cry" he's not saying he understands it logically, he's saying he too wishes he could cry because he feels the emotion.

The other interesting minor storyline in the director's cut is the couple of instances of "error" in the T-1000 system after being frozen and thawed.
In the director's cut this "added footage evidence" adds to the leverage of how the team was able to defeat it in the end.

I don't necessarily think the deleted scenes make for a more impactful ending. I think all those notes hit perfectly in the theatrical. The scene where Arnold tries to smile makes me cringe, reminds me of Genesis, so happy it was cut.
Respect your opinion but I think the theatrical does cover the needed ground.
This movie is so ahead of its time.
Also, the ending of Terminator 3 really rounds out the entire story and gave me the chills, in a good way. You can be done after that one.

Robert Patrick (the actor who played the T-1000) actually was fast enough to catch John Connor. He had trained intensely to be able to sprint after that motorcycle while holding his breath since a robot wouldn't need to breathe.
He also trained to fire a pistol with the opposite hand since a machine would be able to fire one regardless of which hand they were holding the gun with.
