I recently found out that was one of the reasons why his wife left him, because he became an alcoholic. And even in witness-protection program he got busted a couple of times because of his alcohol problem and the reason why he started to drink was because of the new boring life. Tommy and Stacks were good friends, and he was truly disappointed that Stacks had to be eliminated for failing to get rid of the truck from the Lufthansa heist like he was supposed to do. Tommy even visited Stacks' grieving family after the murder to offer condolences.
I read the book Wiseguy from which the film is based. I think Jimmy Burke...Jimmy Conway in the film....was the scarier guy. Henry Hill says of him, "Jimmy was a scary guy that scared a lot of other scary guys".
The real Paulie was pretty crazy. Henry in an interview, said that he saw Paulie beat up a barmaid with a baseball bat because she threatened to go to his wife about their affair. In fact, Henry said that he lived in fear of these guys.

Everyone is talking about Casino, which is fine, but no one has mentioned a Bronx Tale. Written by Chaz Palminteri and directed by Robert De Niro. They also had major acting roles in the film. It is a great movie.
A Bronx Tale is also based on actual events. Chazz Palminteri wrote and performed it originally as a one-man play based on his childhood growing up in The Bronx. I agree with you that it's a better movie than Casino, though I still think Casino was a very good movie.
In the movie, there was a passing mention about rigging basketball. This was a big scandal, and Henry was a big part of it. ESPN did a documentary about it called "Playing for the Mob" (part of their 30 for 30 series). And because it involved Henry Hill, they had Ray Liotta come in to do the narration for it, somewhat in the same style. It makes for a good sidequel to the movie.
Don’t listen and believe everything that Henry Hill says lol. He was a compulsive liar and was in reality a small part of the mob. Michael Franzese talked about how Henry was just a foot soldier and that Henry over exaggerated his involvement with the mob.

Jimmy cut Morrie out of the heist money because Morrie had no actual standing. Morrie was just a gambler who liked hanging out with the neighborhood bad guys. Morrie wasn't a made guy; he wasn't even an associate, which means he had nobody backing him up, nobody to advocate for him, nobody who would be offended if he was harmed. In short, Jimmy cut Morrie out simply because he could.
Movie has some liberties with names and what people actually did ... The basis for character Morrie "wig man" Kessler was bookmaker Martin "Marty" Krugman (born December 30, 1919- disappeared January 4, 1979, declared legally dead in 1986) he did own a wig shop and was an associate of the Lucchese crime family . Billy Batts was member of Gambino crime family and friend of John Gotti , he was killed in a Nightclub owned by Henry Hill , 2 weeks after he insulted Tommy . Bet they got the scene to be pretty accurate , but the time span and premeditation , indicates Henry Hill is not as clean as this movie makes him look :-)
Morrie was a bookie who refused to pay protection money to Jimmy. Then Jimmy sent a couple guys to beat up an employee of Morrie's and then Morrie threatened to go to the DA and Jimmy hated and never trusted him after that.
Krugman wanted $500,000 out of the heist, so for Jimmy it was either give this guy he didn't like half a million dollars, or kill him and keep it. To a man like Jimmy that's no choice at all.
Except when my friends & I got to the theater late so it was packed! We had to sit in the front row! If I remember right it was close to a 3hr movie! My friends & I did the same thing with Titanic! I swear my neck was sore for 3 days after! Lol
You mentioned that the guy talking them into going into witness protection sounded too real. That is because he was the actual agent who dealt with the real Henry Hill. He was hired as a consultant for the movie and, when the original actor wasn’t cutting it, they offered him the role.
The "How am I funny" scene shows how most gangsters were, where they go from being good to pissed off in seconds, because one person says something they didn't like.
I also love the part where he is trying to get all of the guns/coke/money together for the deal, but he still has to focus on making the Sunday dinner. It shows you how important food is to Italian culture and families.

I'm sure this will get mentioned elsewhere in the comments by others, but Scorsese's "Casino" is the perfect movie pairing to Goodfellas. Also co-written by Nicholas Pileggi and featuring both De Niro and Pesci, as well as a few others from Goodfellas.
The thing I always found humorous is that Goodfellas is superior to like 99.99% of all movies, but the only one people ever seem to point out for some reason is Casino.
Not only is it a true story, but on the BluRay there's a commentary track with Henry Hill and the D.A. who put him in the Witness Relocation Program that is absolutely chilling.
Two neat facts The real Henry Hill stated that Joe Pesci's portrayal of Tommy was 90-95% accurate. Which is amazing, considering that Pesci looked nothing like the real Tommy, who was a tall, muscular man with a moustache and Joe pesci improvised the whole "How am I funny?" scene.
Sal Polisi also said that Pesci's portrayal was very accurate. Although, he described Tommy as more like big child who seemed like he resorted to violence whenever he felt insecure as opposed to the remorseless psychopath in Goodfellas.

Michael Franzese is a former member of the Columbo crime family and has an excellent TH-cam channel if you are interested in anything organized crime related he knew a lot of these guys and turned his life around and is a really good man now but he reviews mob movies and has stories about lots of wise guys, thanks also Donnie Brasco with Johnny Depp is excellent film about a true story of undercover cop infiltrating the mob

I saw this movie and was just obsessed with it when it first came out. I read the book “Wiseguy” and it went into more details about the some of the main characters. Both Paulie and Jimmy died in prison. Jimmy died in 1996 of cancer. Henry Hill died in 2012.
Goodfellas is one of those classics that has so many quotable lines and memorable scenes. A very intelligently constructed movie, too. My sister and me always bust out the "You think I'm a clown? Do I amuse you?" Whenever one of us does something stupid and one of us laughs at the other 😆

This was a pivotal movie in cinematic history. There had never been a movie that so truthfully delved into American Mafia life. Before it the life had been mysterious and somewhat romanticized. This movie showed people a World most at the time knew next to nothing about immersing you into all of it, the glamourous, glitzy, exciting, and familial comradery side as equally well the dark, sinister, uncaring, ruthless, cut throat side. It didn't hurt that it was done with an out of this World musical score, fantastic stylistic cinematography, pacing, and incredible actors. It changed the trajectory of filming in alot of ways. Alot of people in my age group think of movies as before Goodfellas- after Goodfellas.

The kid (waiter) that got killed in the bar later played Tony Soprano's nephew Christopher in the HBO Series "The Sopranos". Another great series modeled after the actual events of the New Jersey Mob. It won many awards.

This was my sister's first R rated movie and every now and then we go back to it and recite it word for word lmao an absolute classic this film is. Pesci's best role hands down.
I heard somewhere that the scene with Joe Pesci getting upset when Henry says he's funny, was an ad lib by Pesci. Something similar happened when he was younger, so you mentioned it to the director, and then just did it, but none of the other actors knew. They all luckily stayed in character, because that is an iconic scene.
"Marty" was an assistant director/cameraman/editor/gofer for the Woodstock film (1970). Scorsese also directed the concert film "The Last Waltz" (1978), which documented The Band's farewell concert at Winterland on Thanksgiving day 1976.
I love the way they filmed the day he got arrested. The cuts got more hectic, the music picked up, it's like the cameraman was getting hopped up along with Henry. As you just now said, they captured the feel of a falling rollercoaster when filming helicopter-day.
Here's some BTS facts: 1. The agent Henry is talking to, is the actual person that busted the real Henry. 2. The real Tommy was a huge person, about 6 something and 230+ pounds 3. Speaking of Tommy, his body was never found and his murder is still unsolved. 4. The woman who plays Tommy's mom is actually Martin Scorsese's mother, his dad was the chef in prison. 5. The "How am I funny?" Scene was actually improvised by Pesci. 6. The real Jimmy Conway is actually named Jimmy Burke and he was serving time at the time of filming. No clue why they changed it. 7. The real Henry Hill actually got kicked out of Witness protection, mostly he returned to his old habits.
Henry Hill claims that Billy Batt's crew captain at the time, John Gotti himself, killed Tommy and that it was a slow death. Take it with a grain of salt. Henry the older and drunker he got had a tendency to embellish at times. lol

When Michael got out of jail he took his wife to see the movie and when Michael saw this he quickly left the theater with his wife and he called Martin Scorsese and asked him why he was put in the movie, since from what Michael said he was part of a different crew and didn’t hang around the Gambino crew.

If you're a Howard Stern fan, you probably heard Henry Hill on the show back in the 90's and early 2000's. HH was a fan of Howard and came on the show at least 10 times. However, Henry was a sad drunken mess by then - he come on Howard's show slurring and cursing and barely coherent. He seemed to have a death wish by then - he left Witness Protection, and he'd taunt the people that called in to Howard who called him a rat and a snitch. He'd drunkenly laugh and tell them to come find him. HH was a wreck and it was painful to listen to him get worse every time he showed up on Howard.
Probably guilt from all the terrible things he did. To hear michael franzses tell it, he kept trying to get out of the life but couldn’t. He must have hated it at some point

I love this movie. I also have a kinda special connection to this movie, because Paulie looks, dresses and acts exactly like my late grandfather. When I watched this movie for the first time, I had to stop - because of how much Paulie reminded me of my late grandfather. So the rank structure of the Mafia is as follows: The Commission - a group composed of the bosses of the biggest families who act to settle large disputes. The Commission has not met in person in decades and its membership has shrunk considerably. Family - a hierarchy of all Mafiosi in a given area. Most families have control over a given city. NYC has the famous "Five Families" which are the most powerful in the country. A family is run by a three-man Administration: a Boss, his second in command Underboss, and an advisor called a Consigliere. Because of the Mafia's losses in recent decades often families are missing one or two of these positions or have "Acting Bosses" or "Street Bosses" when the true Boss is in prison. Some families have as few as 50 total criminals; the Five Families have hundreds, even thousands of criminals each. Crew - Families are made up of independent units called crews. Each crew is run by a Caporegime, or Captain. (Paulie was a Caporegime for the Lucchese crime family, one of New York's Five Families.) Captains control all rackets in a given area, and collect tribute from crew members, passing some along up to Administration and keeping the rest. Captains are all "made men," meaning they've taken the oath, and cannot be harmed without permission from the family Boss. The movie, "My Blue Heaven" is an unofficial sequel to Goodfellas. Nora Ephron who was married to Nicolas Pileggi wrote My Blue Heaven and the movie is a comedy about Henry Hill's experience in witness protection. Its a definite watch as it still a funny movie with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.

The general story is startlingly mostly accurate. Some other things I know are: (1) Tommy is much bigger in real life, like 6'4"-ish 250 lbs- ish (2) Tommy wasn't killed at the end for killing Billy Batts. Paulie had Tommy killed because Tommy actually R*P*D Karen when Henry was in prison. And Paulie was having an affair with Karen! And apparently it was John Gotti who pulled the trigger!! (3) The stimulus for Billy Batts being killed in the bar was more that Jimmy had taken over Billy's rackets while Batts was in jail. And they were making him good money. So instead of handing them all back, it was actually Jimmy who killed Billy Batts. R.I.P Maurice
In the movie, Batts says to Jimmy just before getting whacked, "I did my time. I got my mouths to feed. I gotta get what I gotta get." Basically, when Batts went to prison, Jimmy took over his (Batts's) enterprises. Jimmy was a greedy bastard and was not about to give Batts back his previous enterprises.
The amount of people in this film that are in The Sopranos, the greatest thing ever put to film, ever, is astounding. Christopher, Big Pussy, Paulie, Larry Barese, Dr. Melfi, Karen's Mom who plays Carmela's mom, Billy Batts, Tobin Bell, Carmine, Frank Pellegrino, Maury, Beansy, and many more. They shared 27 cast members.
I walked into a theater when this came out, completely fresh (a thing still possible back in those purer times) and had in fact not heard a new Scorsese picture was released. I left with my jaw on the floor, and the effect lasted for days. I don't know if it's his best film (I'd argue it is) but it's the one which had the most impact on me...
An incredibly brutal, and mind screwing movie. Because of the violent wild card attitude of Tommy. The way decenia old friendships and bounds mean absolutely nothing and behind the friendly smiles and gestures are predators who are either ready to kill or just a breath away of their own brutal death. It's worth digging into the life of the real Henry Hill, there's tons of interviews & documentaries of him on youtube. Great ep ! You guys absorb a lot out of movies, which is cool to see & hear. It still aggravates my that this movie didn’t win a single Oscar and that it lost Best Picture to Dances With Wolves. I mean that is a great movie but no one talks about it any more. And 30 years later Goodfellas is still one of the greatest and most influential movies ever made.

Everyone is talking about Casino, which is fine, but no one has mentioned a Bronx Tale. Written by Chaz Palminteri and directed by Robert De Niro. They also had major acting roles in the film. It is a great movie.

A Bronx Tale is also based on actual events. Chazz Palminteri wrote and performed it originally as a one-man play based on his childhood growing up in The Bronx. I agree with you that it's a better movie than Casino, though I still think Casino was a very good movie.

In the movie, there was a passing mention about rigging basketball. This was a big scandal, and Henry was a big part of it. ESPN did a documentary about it called "Playing for the Mob" (part of their 30 for 30 series). And because it involved Henry Hill, they had Ray Liotta come in to do the narration for it, somewhat in the same style. It makes for a good sidequel to the movie.

The basis for character Morrie "wig man" Kessler was bookmaker Martin "Marty" Krugman (born December 30, 1919- disappeared January 4, 1979, declared legally dead in 1986) he did own a wig shop and was an associate of the Lucchese crime family .
Billy Batts was member of Gambino crime family and friend of John Gotti , he was killed in a Nightclub owned by Henry Hill , 2 weeks after he insulted Tommy .
Bet they got the scene to be pretty accurate , but the time span and premeditation , indicates Henry Hill is not as clean as this movie makes him look :-)

Morrie was a bookie who refused to pay protection money to Jimmy. Then Jimmy sent a couple guys to beat up an employee of Morrie's and then Morrie threatened to go to the DA and Jimmy hated and never trusted him after that.
Krugman wanted $500,000 out of the heist, so for Jimmy it was either give this guy he didn't like half a million dollars, or kill him and keep it. To a man like Jimmy that's no choice at all.

You mentioned that the guy talking them into going into witness protection sounded too real. That is because he was the actual agent who dealt with the real Henry Hill. He was hired as a consultant for the movie and, when the original actor wasn’t cutting it, they offered him the role.
The "How am I funny" scene shows how most gangsters were, where they go from being good to pissed off in seconds, because one person says something they didn't like.
I also love the part where he is trying to get all of the guns/coke/money together for the deal, but he still has to focus on making the Sunday dinner. It shows you how important food is to Italian culture and families.

Not only is it a true story, but on the BluRay there's a commentary track with Henry Hill and the D.A. who put him in the Witness Relocation Program that is absolutely chilling.
Two neat facts The real Henry Hill stated that Joe Pesci's portrayal of Tommy was 90-95% accurate. Which is amazing, considering that Pesci looked nothing like the real Tommy, who was a tall, muscular man with a moustache and Joe pesci improvised the whole "How am I funny?" scene.
Sal Polisi also said that Pesci's portrayal was very accurate.
Although, he described Tommy as more like big child who seemed like he resorted to violence whenever he felt insecure as opposed to the remorseless psychopath in Goodfellas.

Michael Franzese is a former member of the Columbo crime family and has an excellent TH-cam channel if you are interested in anything organized crime related he knew a lot of these guys and turned his life around and is a really good man now but he reviews mob movies and has stories about lots of wise guys, thanks also Donnie Brasco with Johnny Depp is excellent film about a true story of undercover cop infiltrating the mob

I saw this movie and was just obsessed with it when it first came out. I read the book “Wiseguy” and it went into more details about the some of the main characters. Both Paulie and Jimmy died in prison. Jimmy died in 1996 of cancer. Henry Hill died in 2012.
This movie had such an amazing cast. Lorraine Bracco who portrayed Karen Hill went on to play Tony Soprano's psychiatrist in The Sopranos.
Goodfellas is one of those classics that has so many quotable lines and memorable scenes. A very intelligently constructed movie, too. My sister and me always bust out the "You think I'm a clown? Do I amuse you?" Whenever one of us does something stupid and one of us laughs at the other 😆

I'm 33 and a major movie buff and I just watched Goodfellas for the 1st time ever last month 🤦🏾♀️ it is now one of my favorite top 100 movies.

This was a pivotal movie in cinematic history. There had never been a movie that so truthfully delved into American Mafia life. Before it the life had been mysterious and somewhat romanticized. This movie showed people a World most at the time knew next to nothing about immersing you into all of it, the glamourous, glitzy, exciting, and familial comradery side as equally well the dark, sinister, uncaring, ruthless, cut throat side. It didn't hurt that it was done with an out of this World musical score, fantastic stylistic cinematography, pacing, and incredible actors. It changed the trajectory of filming in alot of ways. Alot of people in my age group think of movies as before Goodfellas- after Goodfellas.

Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but lost 7 to the western epic Dances With Wolves. Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor.

I heard somewhere that the scene with Joe Pesci getting upset when Henry says he's funny, was an ad lib by Pesci. Something similar happened when he was younger, so you mentioned it to the director, and then just did it, but none of the other actors knew. They all luckily stayed in character, because that is an iconic scene.
"Marty" was an assistant director/cameraman/editor/gofer for the Woodstock film (1970). Scorsese also directed the concert film "The Last Waltz" (1978), which documented The Band's farewell concert at Winterland on Thanksgiving day 1976.

I love the way they filmed the day he got arrested. The cuts got more hectic, the music picked up, it's like the cameraman was getting hopped up along with Henry. As you just now said, they captured the feel of a falling rollercoaster when filming helicopter-day.

This is the greatest mob story ever told. No prequels or sequels, just a standalone film that details one story. Imo, Scorsese’s best film 💯.

When Michael got out of jail he took his wife to see the movie and when Michael saw this he quickly left the theater with his wife and he called Martin Scorsese and asked him why he was put in the movie, since from what Michael said he was part of a different crew and didn’t hang around the Gambino crew.

If you're a Howard Stern fan, you probably heard Henry Hill on the show back in the 90's and early 2000's. HH was a fan of Howard and came on the show at least 10 times. However, Henry was a sad drunken mess by then - he come on Howard's show slurring and cursing and barely coherent. He seemed to have a death wish by then - he left Witness Protection, and he'd taunt the people that called in to Howard who called him a rat and a snitch. He'd drunkenly laugh and tell them to come find him. HH was a wreck and it was painful to listen to him get worse every time he showed up on Howard.
I remember one time 'Spider's' sister called the Howard Stern show to talk to Henry Hill about the location of Spiders body. Henry didn't know.
Probably guilt from all the terrible things he did. To hear michael franzses tell it, he kept trying to get out of the life but couldn’t. He must have hated it at some point

I love this movie. I also have a kinda special connection to this movie, because Paulie looks, dresses and acts exactly like my late grandfather. When I watched this movie for the first time, I had to stop - because of how much Paulie reminded me of my late grandfather. But I've since then watched the movie many times and it has become one of my favorite movies.
So the rank structure of the Mafia is as follows:
The Commission - a group composed of the bosses of the biggest families who act to settle large disputes. The Commission has not met in person in decades and its membership has shrunk considerably.
Family - a hierarchy of all Mafiosi in a given area. Most families have control over a given city. NYC has the famous "Five Families" which are the most powerful in the country. A family is run by a three-man Administration: a Boss, his second in command Underboss, and an advisor called a Consigliere. Because of the Mafia's losses in recent decades often families are missing one or two of these positions or have "Acting Bosses" or "Street Bosses" when the true Boss is in prison. Some families have as few as 50 total criminals; the Five Families have hundreds, even thousands of criminals each.
Crew - Families are made up of independent units called crews. Each crew is run by a Caporegime, or Captain. (Paulie was a Caporegime for the Lucchese crime family, one of New York's Five Families.) Captains control all rackets in a given area, and collect tribute from crew members, passing some along up to Administration and keeping the rest. Captains are all "made men," meaning they've taken the oath, and cannot be harmed without permission from the family Boss. Crews are made up of two kinds of criminals: a small group of Soldiers (made men) and a much larger group of Associates, who are simply any criminals working with and operating under a particular crew. It used to be a rule that you had to be "100 percent Sicilian" to become made, but this was never fully enforced - even Al Capone failed this standard, his family was from Naples. Nowadays the standard seems to be that all someone needs is an Italian last name and to not be obviously biracial. Henry and Jimmy were both Irish and could never move past Associate; Tommy was Italian but still just an Associate, since families kept made members to a minimum and only rarely "opened the books" to swear in new blood.

The movie, "My Blue Heaven" is an unofficial sequel to Goodfellas. Nora Ephron who was married to Nicolas Pileggi wrote My Blue Heaven and the movie is a comedy about Henry Hill's experience in witness protection. Its a definite watch as it still a funny movie with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.

The narration comes almost completely from the book. As an aside in 1990, I was dating a guy, a film projectionist,I He had transfered this to VHS well before it was released. He gave me a hit of acid before we settled in. Best cinema experience of my life.
Henry hill actually left witness protection and lived for quite awhile. He has a bad drug problem, I believe that was related to his passing

The general story is startlingly mostly accurate. Some other things I know are:
(1) Tommy is much bigger in real life, like 6'4"-ish 250 lbs- ish
(2) Tommy wasn't killed at the end for killing Billy Batts. Paulie had Tommy killed because Tommy actually R*P*D Karen when Henry was in prison. And Paulie was having an affair with Karen! And apparently it was John Gotti who pulled the trigger!!
(3) The stimulus for Billy Batts being killed in the bar was more that Jimmy had taken over Billy's rackets while Batts was in jail. And they were making him good money. So instead of handing them all back, it was actually Jimmy who killed Billy Batts.

Jimmy was as powerful as some of the Capos who were made men. He killed two made men without any repercussions.
In the movie, Batts says to Jimmy just before getting whacked, "I did my time. I got my mouths to feed. I gotta get what I gotta get." Basically, when Batts went to prison, Jimmy took over his (Batts's) enterprises. Jimmy was a greedy bastard and was not about to give Batts back his previous enterprises.
The amount of people in this film that are in The Sopranos, the greatest thing ever put to film, ever, is astounding. I walked into a theater when this came out, completely fresh (a thing still possible back in those purer times) and had in fact not heard a new Scorsese picture was released. I left with my jaw on the floor, and the effect lasted for days. I don't know if it's his best film (I'd argue it is) but it's the one which had the most impact on me...
The day Henry got busted was exactly 2 weeks before I was born.
Interesting fact "the funny guy" scene was unscripted and improvised so the shocked look on everyone's face is legit 🤣

And it's interesting how the audience builds sympathy for these characters, even though they were total assholes.
Fun fact: the Lucchese crime family actually stoped looking for Henry Hill after this movie because of how good the film was

When I saw this I never knew it was based on a true story! I mean it's amazing and brilliant from start to finish.

An incredibly brutal, and mind screwing movie. Because of the violent wild card attitude of Tommy. The way decenia old friendships and bounds mean absolutely nothing and behind the friendly smiles and gestures are predators who are either ready to kill or just a breath away of their own brutal death.
It's worth digging into the life of the real Henry Hill, there's tons of interviews & documentaries of him on youtube. Great ep ! You guys absorb a lot out of movies, which is cool to see & hear. Cheers !
It still aggravates my that this movie didn’t win a single Oscar and that it lost Best Picture to Dances With Wolves.
I mean that is a great movie but no one talks about it any more. And 30 years later Goodfellas is still one of the greatest and most influential movies ever made.
Joe Pesci won an oscar for best supporting actor portraying Tommy in this movie.

It's a masterpiece. Great reactions! Make sure to watch "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull", both by Scorsese with Di Nero, both masterpieces.
I second these! Both are iconic but the acting in Raging Bull is pure perfection.
his name actually is henry hill. he dropped out of witness protection because he couldnt stay away from drugs and im pretty sure he spent more time in jail. i think he worked directly with the author of 'wiseguys'
