No worries about axe glancing off the log and into my leg. Your soup looked delicious. I’m not wild about cooked carrots either, but the vibrant color of yours looked intriguing. • @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska
      @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hey friend, that would definitely work on some thing that was going to sit there for a while. But all the snow and ice pack is too heavy to just be able to pick up the tarp and have a sluff off. We end up having to shovel ice off a tarp and that just destroys the tarp. At 40 bucks a pop it’s not worth it. We have bought many many tarps in our day. Ha! Ideally will have a building for it to be under cover in. But we just have lots of priorities right now and that can’t be at the top of the list. It will be someday just not today. 😊

      Thank you for being so thoughtful in your comment and understanding that our life is as full as it can be right now. Ha! Even though there’s a lot more that needs to be done. Shoveling ice and snow off of vehicles is part of daily life for every Alaskan. Unless you have a garage. Mr. Reeve and I have lived here our entire lives, and we’re not afraid of a little bit of snow. Ha! It’s almost easier to not have a shed for the side-by-side and the vehicles, because the snow will still land on top of the shed or the carport, or whatever we decide to build. And we have to climb up there to get the snow off too. Unfortunately, the snow doesn’t melt here over the winter like it does other places. The rain we got this time was definitely a fluke. It’s -5° today. But it’s bright and beautiful out. Again, I really appreciate your conscientiousness. So very very kind of you to understand the complexity of our lives. 💕💕

That's a big tree to bring down, good job! I've been looking around here at which trees need to be dealt with because Arkansas is notorious for ice storms. We would be stuck back here until we could cut a path out. We're prepared just incase. I like sage in soups also, I thought I was the only one. I bet that was delicious. Hey beautiful! They are Maremmas. Juniper is actually 1/16. Great Pyrenees the Maremma breed is very similar to the great Pyrenees except that they have a little bit smaller body size and they tend to stay home more than the great Pyrenees. The people that we got Juniper from breed a tiny bit of great Pyrenees into their dogs, so that they are more bulked up for the winter temperatures. Our Maremma
      girls can comfortably handle -20° As you can see, Juniper is not afraid of the snow. Ha! I do put radishes in soups and stews. I usually just freeze them in vacuum, sealed bags and take them out when I need extra filler and soup. Lots of love for you my sweet friend.

      Hey Mick, that was a smoking deal! We do have a full size plow rig too. 😊 F-250 with an 8 foot plow, just a huge pain to put on and off the truck. Wish we’d had purchased another brand. But we gotta get our moneys worth out of it, before getting a different one. We started out here with just the truck plow, but learned quickly that we need lots of different tools for so much snow management. You really have to have giant snow dumps when only using the plow. We found that we get too boxed in using the plow along on the long narrow driveway with nowhere for the plowed snow to go. We leave it on the truck, even though it’s very cumbersome, but we need to weld the light bar on it. The lights were the first thing to go on the junky plow. Way too much money for so many problems with that plow. Be blessed friend.

    Wellll.... THAT was a lot of hard work in this video! I'm pooped! Soooo many great moments that I'm not sure where to start! Daisy & her trip to the salad bar, that crazy lumberjack showing off his skills, that wood splitter footage makes me want one & we dont have a woodstove OR a fireplace! 🥴 Juniper & her antics including the slippery floor in the side by side... I thought for a minute she was gonna go in one side & right out the other!
    Just an all around fun video. Oh yeah... the soup. Yummm, but why no tomato stuff with caribou? I've never had it so I'm curious. Is it just your preference or does caribou just not go with tomato base? Inquiring minds need to know!
    You guys worked hard enough that I think I need a nap!!😂😂❤❤

      Juniper was so well behaved. The whole time, I was worried she wasn’t going to stay in the side by side. No reason not use tomato with caribou. I just had originally thought to do a chicken Italian tomato soup. But a beef type soup sounded way better for the for the day we were having. 😊💕

      We really should have gone for the whole cab, live and learn. Ha! Far too expensive for us now though. We have plans to weld a roof structure that can handle the snow load but, alas, maybe next year. Until we can get it all enclosed the snow will still drift in there. We live on the base of a mountain so the snow comes from all direction like Forrest Gump rain. Ha! Thanks for watching friend. 😊

      Hey friend, we thought the same thing the first year. But the snow comes down so heavy, and so deep that the tarp just gets buried in the snow too. And then we have to shovel it out and the tarp just gets destroyed. We spent a lot of money on tarps at 40 bucks a pop ha! Someday we’ll have a structure for it, but this year it was really important to get the animals a structure. Maybe in the next year or so. Until then will keep shoveling. We’re pretty used to it. We shovel our trucks off every time. It snows too. Be blessed and have a great week

    Heat gun or hair dryer to melt things. If $1200 for a starter, it would be cheaper getting a cab for it.

    • @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska
      @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Great thought on the heat gun/hair dryer, but we live offgrid on a tiny solar system. A hair dryer pulls as much power as a microwave. Yikes right?! so in order to use a heat gun or a hairdryer, we’d have to run the generator. You’re right, the roof definitely would’ve been cheaper than the starter. Ha! Have a blessed week friend.

      Hey friend, the tarp will still have shoveled off and the shovels destroy the tarps. At $40 a pop its not worth it. Everyday it snows here in Alaska, we shovel off vehicles. Just showing everyone daily life. Ideally we’ll build a structure to house the side by side, but we’re just not there yet. 😊

    What's the deal with all the beetle kill Trees. Why is nobody trying to prevent it?

    • @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska
      @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      6 years ago they came through like locusts snd laid eggs in the trees. The hatching larva ate the cambium layer of the trees, essentially the vascular system. It was a statewide epidemic. Everyone tried stop it, but the damage was done. Some trees recovered, and trees less than 4” in diameter were not affected. The beetles traveled across the state until they finally died out. Now we have lots of dead standing trees that need to come down.

In order to run a hairdryer, we have to get the generator running. Ha! Fun bonus fact: we also got rid of our electric coffee pot will be moved off grid.
