Actually, that is so totally Alaskan ingenuity!! I think most people don't realize how difficult and expensive it is to solve problems up here with the lack of supplies readily available. We HAVE to come up with ideas!! But, I love it. Makes me want to be more creative!!
So pretty! I can’t believe how cold it is there already. So neat how you source so many items that would be discarded and repurpose them. Mr. Reeve is such a gentleman and so protective of you. Love that! Reminds me of my husband.❤ You always have happy animals. You two have a blessed Thanksgiving. ❤️🙏🏻Val C
Free 99 is the best!! Here in CT there are certain areas where there are public spring areas. They're not advertised, locals know where they are. Freezers are a good idea, but if it were me I'd try a couple of buckets inside as experimental before filling them up. At least if they freeze, there's not a stinky mess to clean up. ❤
Hey Nora, its the thermal mass of all the grain in the container that slows down the freezing. The buckets eon’t take long to freeze inside an empty freezer. Maybe get an extra day out of it.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Give the animals a little extra for being such good boys and girls. Love seeing the snow and winter but glad I am not there anymore to many aches and pains at 72. Amy from MS
My Uncle in Devon used to feed his winter beef cattle w lots of spent grain - you never heard or saw such contented animals after they scarfed down a lot of spent grain along with their other feeds ☘
There's a spring near me with great tasting water. Lots of people use it. Some fill up loads of jugs and containers. Since im close by, i don't need to do a 50 or 100 gallon fill up each visit. I'd be interested to see how long your freezers will keep the feed from freezing. I was thinking of either putting something underground or buried in snowpack. The downside to burying underground is too late for this year, and a pain to keep clear to access it. Snowpack might have similar issues. Both would likely also fail to keep the contents from freezing when you get close to empty. But, even if the freezers woukd keep the contents not frozen for three days, it might save you a bit of work as you'd have to fill fewer five gallon buckets and do the freeze outside-thaw in the house thing.
That’s awesome about the spring. I think the freezer idea will definitely be like all of our other ideas, trial, and error. Ha! We’ll see how it goes. 😊
If you fill the freezers with spent grain it might bulge the sides preventing the lids from closing. I have 2 IBC totes that I store water in for emergency use. I built a box of EPS ( Expanded Polystyrene) to prevent freezing. Good luck!
You all live in God's country, so beautiful. Picture postcard of the snow covered trees. Peaceful. When someone tells me to go to my happy place, I close my eyes and all I see is your beautiful place. Snowing, snow on trees, and to hear the crunching of the snow under your feet, calming to me, HAPPY PLACE.❤❤❤❤❤❄️❄️❄️❄️☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩. Happy early Thanksgiving Day guys.🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩
Hi Guys, thanks for the ride a long. I was waiting for Reeve to fall in the spent grain containers, lol. When you go to the lodge to pick up scraps for the pigs, do you go through the bags first to see if there is any good food to keep for yourself? LOL. The waterhole is the best tasting water around that area and I used to get my water there, now I will get mine at Upper Willow Creek here in the Pass. Happy Thanksgiving.
I like the freezer idea! Let's go further with it.... Transport it in the totes, then pour the totes into the freezers. Store the freezers elevated, and add a grain chute (think of an RV waste valve) to the bottom of the freezer to fill your buckets and feed the critters. Pouring the totes may be the hardest part, but I have an idea for that too. ;) -Dusty
Good thoughts, but not feasible with the temps here. Any valve situation would freeze without it being heated or blown out. Just like the big grain chute at the brewery. And we don’t have on grid power to do anything like that. And even heating it isn’t enough for the grain silo. 2 days at -20° and the grain chute was frozen solid when we went up there 2 days ago. No idea when it will be operational again.
@@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska I'm sure we can figure out a solution for the cold. If the grain doesn't sit against the valve it would definitely help....
Will you please fly the drone around during when it snows please. Have seen good snow till I meet y'all. I love y'all and Happy Thanksgiving. As always be safe and God bless you
Adventures in getting pig food and genius idea with keeping it from freezing. Alaska is beautiful, but too cold for me. Have a blessed night and a blessed Thanksgiving!
That is awesome your state doesn't charge for that spring. My state is out of control with taxing everything. If we had a spring like that our state would tax us to put the rock slab in. Then tax us for using it. Then tax us again for people who chose to drive to the spring. Oh yeah..and one more tax so they can create a committee to study the water and the effect it is having on the purple rain doves cry beetle no one heard of until another tax was needed! 😂😂 Thank you for sharing your day with us!
Ha! oh my goodness! We’re pretty fortunate, and that the overreach seems to be much less here than in other states. Be blessed friend, and thanks for watching.
Warm truck is a way better deal. Crunchy bits left over from the last spent grains. Hot dogs.🤤 Locked out. Porchiny is getting big. Bbrrr. Warm chariot. Church hair. Correct answer. Paved driveway in the winter. Beautiful trees. She can see. White out Alaska driving. Beautiful. Scenic route. Sasquatch. Lol! I like his deals. He does it while she films. Purple grain scoop. Blow out the chute when you're done. Magic. Look ma, grain. Whoa, be safe Reeve. His nose isn't a sniffer anymore. Bad joke 🤣. You got the good muscles, Chrystal. He even opens the door. Gentleman. How much does that grain cost? Oatmeal, barley, amaranth and quinoa are good cooked together as a "porage". Shovel it on Reeve. 200 gallons a week? Smart idea with the freezers. It still might freeze up. Meat nectar 🤢 Right tool. Water place. Recalculating. I love what-a-burger. Bug spray year round. Mosquitos are the state bird. Lol. Great resource for water. Oh, water burger. Lol. Sure is pretty. Frosty chariot. Stay safe and warm my friends ☺️
Hey friend! This spent grain is free. It’s the leftovers from the brewery after they make beer with it. Purchasing regular grain for animal feed is about $30 for 50 a pound bag. Way more for no corn/no soy feed. Be blessed friend
Hey friend! This brewery us in Talkeetna. It’s mostly barley, but differed based on what is brewed. Palmer Ale House has a brewery, not sure if they give out their spent grain. Bear Paw River Brewing in wasilla used to have free spent grain, not sure if they still do though. Be blessed friend.
