This game STUCK with myself and my 3 daughters... They were pretty young, so this was their "Dad's letting us watch something not for kids" moment... Over the course of like 4 weekends, I blew through this while they watched all wrapped up in blankets and snacks... It's just one of those things they always bring up when remembering cool times with dad... Only other game they have that kind EVENT memory as a family is Asura's Wrath... They got HYPED for this remaster and possible sequel...

Absolutely, this game was one of my favorites I couldn’t put it down. I sure hope a sequel is in the works and out in the next few years.
i think the reception to Control's AWE expansion *Alan Wake Expansion lol*, helped boost interest for a sequel so they started with a remaster to start. Thats my guess.

Not sure about the remake, but both the original and American Nightmare had a secret free camera mode on PC you could activate using command line '-freecamera' and pressing a thumbstick on your gamepad, so you could fly absolutely anywhere in the open world. It was very useful for making beautiful cinematic screenshots.
I believe that ACG did a walk/talk with the original release (maybe 3 years ago?) Worth watching.

I remember buying this back on 360 when it was on sale because it looked kind of cool. I didn’t expect to love the game as much as I did. For anyone who never got to play it back then, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Humorously enough, I went to d/l the original game because it was that time of the year I replay all Alan Wake content. Lo and behold, there it is, brand new AW remaster is available.
How are you liking the game?
I was going through a major 5 yr relationship break up when this game released. This game took me from reality and helped me through that bad time. Alan Wake will forever hold a spot in my heart.
Lucky to have something to escape reality then.Everyone need something in those times.

Alan Wake is one of my favorite games of all time! Good to have this morning review. I would love a American nightmare remaster. I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan, and American nightmare takes place basically in "night springs" the games version of the Twilight zone
it's a lot of fun, a remaster isn't needed (backwards compatibility patch for console users, works perfectly on Steam as is). What we need is a sequel.

I’m a TZ freak, as well.. A few weeks ago I was actually going to download the older version on my new PC but something told me to hold on.. I guess I found my survival horror fix for this Halloween..
And I said to myself this is probably releasing because they’re working on a sequel.. Right as I thought that was when the subtitle appeared on the screen hahaha

I blindly bought Alan Wake when it first came out, and I still remember that moment when I fell in love with it - end of the first Chapter, when the Roy Orbison song "In Dreams" starts playing. It's still one of my favorite Stephen King-esque supernatural phycological suspense games.
For anyone buying this who hasn't played it before - the DLC that's included is seriously a must-play inclusion!

@@kriskater Its not inclusive of all DLC the 'American Nightmare' DLC isn't included (yet..hopefully it will be, great Kasabian track throughout that one)

Same here! I remember a specific tv-ad that played "War" and that floored me. I have been a huge fan ever since. And one of my favorite scenes(no spoilers) from the game is when "Children of the Elder God" is playing :D
What's Poets of the fall? In your opinion would you get this as I have the backcompat original, got it free with Quantum Break, loved Control but I tried playing this but graphics look awful on 4k tv and found the controls clunky, from what I'm aware they've tightened them up, always a title I was interested in but never got around to it, thanks in advance from Ireland 🇮🇪🙏

This game launched back in 2010 next to RDR1 if I remember correctly. I still remember being in my teenage bedroom and playing these games back to back, loving every second of it. Those two games turned out to be such transformative experiences for me. One kindled my love for Stephen King's work and the latter made me love westerns and share both of these passions with my dad.
Rdr1 was so immersive to me as a kid. Not too many games can get me in their worlds like that, is alan wake similar in the world building and immersion?
@@Kanthide I would definitely say it is. Remedy and rockstar have even worked together on Max Payne. They are also collaborating on the new Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes. this game is also on sale right now on Xbox. Definitely a worthy title.

This is one of those reviews that has me considering getting a title that I originally had no desire, until watching this. Also, I have to say I really appreciate the new on-screen tidbits you've added too
U have to play it. Amazing Linear single player games are not the standard anymore. I miss them so much. I dont do multiplayer, so i crave these types of games.

Seeing Alan Wake in the Control DLC made me giddy like a little school girl. Lol. I love games with characters that have an inner monologue. Max Payne 3 was also incredible.
I have waited SO long to hear that there is a sequel to Alan Wake actually being made. Watching this review has got me so excited thinking about how they are going to continue the story.
American Nightmare has practically been de-canon'd (thank christ), so I imagine it'll focus on Alan attempting to escape from The Dark Place.
The two DLCs set there were my absolute favorite parts of the game. I can't wait to see what they pull off with a full game in that style.

Great review. I actually played it about a year ago when it came out for gamepass so not quite interested in playing it again that soon, but probably will do so in a couple years. Maybe when I finally decide to upgrade from my OneX to the SeriesX. God, these names are just awful.

This was one of my favorite games. I won't play the re-mastered because other than graphical enhancements, it's the same story. I do encourage those who haven't played it to do so and you'll definitely enjoy it. I'll definitely play the sequel if one is ever released.

Just watching from TH-cam on my phone, I couldn’t tell if the game looked much better. But hearing new lip syncing sounds great, and that helps me fill in the details in my head that I can’t necessarily see. Looks good!

I replayed the entire Remedy series after Control, and before AWE dropped. It's a whole other experience playing it and knowing connections that, granted probably are after-thoughts in the Remedy-verse, but still give it a series of threads weaving it all together like a tapestry of Sam Lake's insane imagination.

For $30 bucks its worth another go or two. Alan Wake is a excellent game. There is no reason however that American Nightmare shouldn't of been released with this.
If you see the game physically on consoles... you might want to consider buying it asap. I am seeing the physical copies practically vanish.
Recently beat this on pc max settings before remaster announced. This is definitely a hard pass, was hoping for a remake. Disappointing.

I always thought Remedy games had excellent texture work. Even Max Payne 2, 18 years later @ max settings still looks pretty good.

I love this game but I just don't see the improvements of the remaster besides some textures, am I the only one?
I always took the vacation spot to be brilliant. Where better to take a horror writer that's lost his muse than to a creepy as hell hole on the road town? A horror writer isn't likely to get that kind of inspiration from a bright and happy beach paradise.
Just ordered and downloaded this masterpiece last night. Can't wait to go and play it later on my PS5!!

What I don't understand is what is in this "remaster" that makes the PC version any better than the original? It looks pretty much the same as I remember it.
At any rate it's nice that a bunch of people who never played the original will play this, though I feel like American Nightmare should have been included with it.
One would hope they improved the keyboard and mouse controls. Especially when I was driving it was evident this game was designed with controllers in mind. I just played it for the first time 6 months ago and in spite of my control gripes, the story still holds up and the game has stayed in my memory more than most.

Character models and some higher quality textures but otherwise yea it's pretty much the same. The remaster is mainly aimed at consoles, on pc it didn't really need one.
@Fishy Vagina I mean for consoles a resolution upgrade makes it worth it since it was a 360 game and it was literally unavailable on playstation, but for pc I'd agree the og is fine.

Playing this for the first time and damn. Alan Wake tops Control in every aspect.
Story wise certainly..gameplay wise I would say Control is definitely better. But both have that Remedy feel to them, that kind of special wierdness from the writing and world design that sets them apart from other games in the market

I got the Remastered version on PS5. I can tell you that it looks graphically up to par with PS4 games and controls like a PS3 game. I wish they'd overhaul the controls and add more options because it really needed this and didn't get it. It's a good experience to play through for a newcomer to Remedy games but for those who played the original, I don't think this will be a necessary buy.
Technicality: Alan is wearing what we call a sport coat.
A more rough’n’tumble kind of jacket that is most easily identified by its large wool stitch, leather elbow pads and sometimes includes a padded leather patch over the right collarbone for rifle stocks.

I'm thoroughly enjoying playing this again. One new feature I've noticed is that there are QR Codes hidden in the game. There's one in Alan's apartment for example. Scanning it takes you to a hidden TH-cam video with more lore to learn! I've only found the one code, but as my video was numbered "2" I'm guessing there will be more!

I tried the original when it came out ..I gave up after a couple of hours. Clunky, repetitive and not in the least bit scary. If you're the type of person who loved Silent Hill 2, Project Zero, ICO etc then give this a miss

HELP! Am I crazy? I'm just not impressed by remasters of things these days. I'll include The Uncharted Collection and Batman The Animated Series blu-ray in my long list of examples.
All of these remasters seeing to make thing "easier" to see. Everything is brighter, which kills some of the tone and mood. I don't care if the originals were "meant to be brighter" or not. Darker is how we first saw them and first loved them. Batman The Animated series is a dark, dimly lit show. Along comes the blu-ray and brightens everything up. Same for this Alan Wake remaster. I'm all for sharper textures and detail but I'm not for the 15/20% increase in brightness that seems to come with all of these remasters.
While watching this comparison, I am finding the original game to look better in a number of ways, especially in the darkest scenes. Something has been taken away from the game with this new version. And changing Alan's face wasn't even necessary. I wish people would focus on making these remasters look better, and not on making them "easier to see."

Ok, Alan Wake is one of those actual gaming treasures that they’ve remastered. I got it for free from purchasing Quantum Break and love it. I missed it years ago. Trust me, it’s fun, easy to get into and cheap. Must buy. Also, get Quantum Break for like $20 (good game) to get Alan Wake with all its DLC for the free, lol.

I love this game! That was THE game that I really missed from the couple of months I had a XB360. Being a Playstation gamer always, I thought I would never enjoy it. Also, it reminds me of a time and people I enjoyed it with. Family/friends/girlfriend. Good memories! Oh and the soundtrack I still listen to regularly!!!
Is it the best game in history? No. But I really like and I've never forgotten it's mood and ambience!

Yep deffo time to get and replay this atmospheric title. Alan Wake was the reason I went and got an Xbox 360 in the first place. The only game that over took Halo as a reason to buy a box!! Lol
Incidentally, Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots was the reason I got the PS 3 Slim!! Can't just buy a box, you need a decent reason to get it.
So Alan Wake is gonna return to haunt my dreams for a little while again.....yay!!
You don't need the remastered if you have a decent Computer. The remastered is better for console owners. I have the original game on computer since 2011. I bought the remastered to compare. Remastered is missing SSAO, Godrays, and a few other advanced graphics settings for the terrian. They don't look much different. I prefer the original. You can use nvidia image sharpening around .60 and it helps. This game and Max Payne 3 have withstood the test of time on PC
At 4:37 you show the System 2 spec: 1080ti...and below mention DLSS Quality Ultra, but 1080ti doesn't have DLSS support only 2000 and 3000 series. Is it a typo?
